  • Today I show you where and how to start cleaning up from smoke damage.
I left the house with a pot of chicken on the stove and returned home 2 house later to ashes. Hopefully we can get the smell out of our house but it's a lot of work!

I can tell by your expression that this just has defeated you. Praise God that you are all okay and your house is still standing. No one blames you Jennifer. It was simply a slip of the mind. Nothing more. Please don't let it get you down. I wish nothing more, than to be your neighbor right now. I'd be there on my hands and knees scrubbing right along with the two of you. I bet all of your watchers feel the same way. Take each day as it comes, try not to over do it and soon it will be behind you. xoxo

Use your crockpot to simmer it on low. Not much of a chance it going dry as fast. Hope it cleans up for you. Sometimes mishaps happen and we have to do a job we’ve put off. Makes it more worthwhile when done.

I did the very same thing about 30 yrs ago, Jennifer. Let me start by saying, "It isn't the end of the world even though you probably feel that way about now." Our insurance covered replacing the cabinet above the stove and the counter top, but the cleaning we did ourselves. We rented carpet cleaners and did a lot of scrubbing. Now that many years have passed it doesn't seem bad at all, but at the time I shed quite a few tears and felt very guilty! Life goes on, hugs to both of you.

Was coming to leave the same suggestion...I had a small kitchen fire and had to have the duct system cleaned as well, because it was affected since the heater was running and contaminated the whole system so it kept blowing smoke stink when it came on. Also- if you haven't already- change your filter and keep checking it and change as needed :)

When I was 19, my husband and I were newly married and living in our first apartment on base in Illinois (he was in the Navy, we're from CA, so far away from home). We loved, and still do, going to the movies! Well, I had a large pot of chicken rapidly boiling when we "left" to catch a movie. As we were watching the movie, about 1/3 of the way along, I suddenly remembered that I didn't turn off that pot! We drove back immediately, and thank goodness it was still boiling. It must have had a lot of water in it with the lid on. I was so scared on that ride home that the whole apartment complex could have burned down, remember I was only 19, so I thought the worst! Anyways, my husband was not mad at all, he was disappointed about missing the movie. 😂
Now, I'm 45, and over the years have left something alone in the kitchen, while at home. One time, I fell asleep waking up to the smoke alarm. I have gotten better, but it still happens to all of us. I do however, never leave the house without checking the stove, never leaving it on. We are all human, not perfect.
We have a 16 yr old and 12 year old daughters, and we teach them about safety in the kitchen. Basically, they are not allowed to use the stove top if we leave on an errand. 😂
I just want you to know how much I enjoy your videos on everything! I admire your dedication in making the videos, they are fun to watch, I learn so much! You're so sweet!💗 Happy cleaning!
    Merry Christmas!
Ps. What a wonderful husband you have to help you clean, had to mention his efforts too.😊👌

When you’ve finished cleaning invest in a thermal fogging...I’m over facilities management for college dorms I’ve seen floods and fires (food, electrical, and personal use smoking tobacco and other )... the thermal fogging and order seal paint are the only things that work....it’s like heating up oranges and cloves but to the max...fog the whole home but test the scent(before committing to the whole house) perhaps in your garage

What an unfortunate accident! It would be difficult at any time, but right now you would far rather be working on producing the wonderful smells of Christmas than cleaning up the odor of smoke! Bless you and Grandpa, you are such very hard workers! Your kitchen just shines! To double check that the odor is completely eradicated, leave your house for a few hours and when you return you will immediately be able to tell if any odor remains. If you stay in the house, your nose can become 'blind' to the odor, but anyone walking in would notice it.

Jennifer that is a huge undertaking!! You are on the right track though..time to repaint and re decorate .. add essential oils in the filters any citrus will do and it helps. As far as anything with fabric such as carpet and couches I’m afraid you’ll have to replace as it will always linger. Curtains you can wash and again add some citrus essential oils in the washing in will help..
This never happened to me but what did happen was a SEPTIC BACK UP!!!OMGGGG I could have died from that stench. It was mid July and we were away for five days because our house was on the market for sale. Our agent noticed it and called us to come home ASAP..so you can imagine what we came home to. We had to literally remove 5ft off the ground of drywall and we had to redo our whole basement. 5 months later the smell finally left..
I feel your pain girl, don’t over do it though as it is back breaking work. Go as far as you can and hire a company to do the rest. Best of luck 💕💕

I definitely feel for you both. But thankfully no one was hurt. On a bright note, what a score to find that Black Jack gum! That is my FAVORITE gum Jennifer!!! I LOVE licorice.

I can’t believe you took the time to record the clean up. I’m sure setting up cameras adds time and stress. Thank you for taking the time to explain the steps. I hope I never need this information, but I’m sure someone will benefit.

I did the exact same thing once. I left chicken on the stove and went out for hours. I came home to smoke so thick you couldn’t see through it. The smell does eventually leave. Be encouraged, cleaning and time will do the trick.
In spite of that that says otherwise, MERRY CHRISTMAS .

PS. I’m sure Chad has already thought of this but don’t forget to change the filter on your furnace.

I was wondering what you cooked too much over. Thanks, it was chicken. We left the other day to pick our daughter up from bowling practice and left my electric stove on low to boiling potatoes in one pot and simmer chicken stock in another for homemade chicken noodles (Your Recipe) 😋 and thought about your smoke filled house the whole time!!! Came back and everything was ok and dinner turned out GREAT!!
However,. I love what you did to your kitchen! Not the same age as you but I understand the hard work!!!! We are just about done with the construction of our new kitchen and I have to unpack All of our boxes and put everything away!! Along with cleaning items and cabinets of the dust!!!! Love you guys and you have a special person to help you!!!

I did the same thing with candle wax .. lots of smoke but no other damage. And fortunately very little smell, even that went away. Quickly But a flat mop with simple green and magic eraser is good too.

What a beautiful home! I'm so glad you decided to clean it yourself. It's great that you can do it yourself, also. You have done a better job than anyone else would do. Plus, you can go through and get rid of things you don't need or want anymore. I'm so sorry you have to go through this, though. Blessings! New subscriber.

Take one day at a tim, Jennifer and Chad. Get up each new morning and accomplish what you can. Rest when necessary. This, too, shall pass. A few months from now, you will probably be able to laugh about the unfortunate incident. Keep on keeping on!

I can't say thank you enough for doing this video I keep finding all these restoration videos long story short my mom lives with us my dad's on hospice she put a purple sweet potato in the microwave for 20 minutes spray it with oil and it smoked the whole house fire department came we weren't home she didn't remember she put it in the microwave so they axed the ceiling everywhere trying to find where the fire was coming from and later discovered a burnt log in the microwave so now my house smells like campfighter/burnt sweet potato and of course we are low-income thus the reason parents living with us and so Trying to figure this one out and we live in my mother-in-law's home because she remarried so I feel responsible for my parents and what they're doing to this house

Oh my goodness! You two are working so hard. I wish I lived in your town because I would love to help! But instead I’m sending prayers for strength, patience and comfort. Your house will be so perfect when you are finished. I love the look of your cabinets. They just shine. I’m so very sorry you have to go through this, but when you are finished you will have one of the cleanest, most organized homes around. I certainly need to start on mine! God Bless you both and give you continued strength.
