      Sorry about your ceiling. It is a common mistake people make if they have never had to deal with smoke damage before. You may have to apply a good paint sealer like Kilz over any stains that the water caused. If you feather the sealer in lightly around the edges of the spot you may not have to seal the whole ceiling. Good Luck hope it goes well.

      Happy to help. You were smart to research first. It is a common mistake to apply wet solutions first

    Question: If the soot has not been cleaned for over a year, does that an effect on the cleaning procedure?

      If you are dealing with flat paint it may or may not give you a problem. Over a long period of time the walls may have been exposed to dampness or moisture in the air. This can happen if the windows were open on a wet day. In kitchens, steam from cooking, bathroom steam from showers. Start with a dry chemical sponge on flat paint surfaces, if it wipes clean you should be OK. Hope this helps. Larry

    But what if the smoke is much heavier and was wet from fire hoses? Plain dry sponges or water doesn't work. Some kind of chemical is needed - what would you suggest?

      Hi, how did you get on fixing your smoke damage?

      @@adzlee8897 Still working on it. I played with the solutions, and they work, but I need to get a contractor to tear out the drywall and insulation which cannot be salvaged.

      My friends place was smokey and under decorated before he set fire to his furniture. Now after two more years of not fixing the smoke damage his son's renovating. I've tried wet chemicals, it does partially do the job, not good enough. I'm thinking dry clean, seal & re-plaster, or even re-boarding now.

    Will this work on cigarette smoke?

  • @tomslick2058
    @tomslick2058 3 роки тому

    Yeah the sponge won't work well on semi gloss.

      Yeah the smoke sponge is for flat painted surface, some fabrics or porous surfaces. Since I now know you are working with semi-gloss walls. Mix in a bucket with warm water, about 2-3 table spoons of dawn dish soap with baking soda, stir well. Using a sponge (car sponge works well) clean a small section at a time, drying as you go. Do not over wet , drywall and water don't like each other that's why you dry (this will help remove the smell). After use gloves and goggles, open windows and spray with vinegar . Depending how long the cigarette smoke has been on the wall, there may be some staining. Cover with Kilz stain blocker paint, recommend the water base for inside (less odor). Then paint wall with paint, recommend staying with semi-gloss. Good Luck

    Something tells me tge flat paint was a lot cheaper or rental properties. Yeah?

    • @watermitigationadvice4385
      @watermitigationadvice4385  Рік тому

      When choosing paint, flat paint is cheaper to use but while mark easily and not clean well.
      Semi- gloss and gloss paint cost more to use, however depending on the quality of paint purchased it will last a lot longer and clean better. Under normal use Semi-Gloss and Gloss paint can last for years. Cleaning with harsh chemicals can affect the life span.
      Hope this helps

      @@watermitigationadvice4385 it's really helpful Larry. Invaluable. I guess I was being sarcastic - because they used cheap paint, I've f'd it, now I'm stressed they'll throw me out - when it's logical ppl burn candles in their house, and if you use better quality materials, you won't get ppl damaging your stuff. You can't expect thibgs to last if they're cheap - I guess.
