Because English isn't my native language i use both American and British English. I hope everyone understands me?? Hahahahh
Mladja TH same 💀
when england made the language? get it? england=English. its pure logic
In malaysia,everyone does that 😂😂😂
Every asian country maybe use both 🤣
Don’t worry we can still understand you.
*whispers* We use 'elevator' in England sometimes, though. Par exemple, 'Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator' by Roald Dahl.
Charlie and the great glass lift(lol
Kae i love that you live in england/are talking about england but wrote ‘par exemple’ which is french 😂
do you lift bro ? no I'm elevator
I hate how this made me laugh so much
:D
Lol
It would be so interesting to compare Australian, American and British..
Because us aussies mix american and british together while creating our own terms :"]
For example in the video:
1. cupcake
2. fairy floss
3. a year is divided into two semesters and within those semesters there are two terms each- in total 2 semesters and 4 terms.
4. line and queue is alternated
5. icy poles
6. runners tbh
7. elevator
8. theres the ground floor then first floor
9. SOCCAR. football is another sport we created altogether.. thats similar to american football but less violent.
10. we have a lot but um. lately.. thats LIT. "this party is LIT."
11. apartment
Hope you found this interesting ahah
ah icy poles, i call them ice blocks!
The Americanisation of Australian English is quite recent. Most 40+ year old Anglo-Australians speak mostly similar to British English.
I'm a 51 year old Aussie and I agree with this comment... apart from 6. In WA we call Runners 'Sandshoes' probably because we are Sandgropers...well at least that's what I call them. Also Flats have been flats for many years, just recently people have started calling them apartments. I do remember when cupcakes were called fairy cakes as well. But now I call them cupcakes too
So I basically abide by mostly British, but my father was actually American and he used totally different words to me.
+D'Yandra Forrester An eraser is just an eraser while a condom is a rubber
I speak American English, but British English makes more sense to me.
same
and then I heard
"fairy" cake
and that
safe = cool AHAHA wtf
+Jarisuuu 富查理殊 so I'm still more to the american english
although i do like the brittish accent
+Jarisuuu 富查理殊 no, you don't like the British accent, you like the southern English accent which a small minority speak. The UK isn't huge but you can drive for about 20 minutes and find a new accent... remember the UK is far more densely populated compared to like America.
As a northerner I can tell you I sound not one it like this southern softy.
This is a fun video but I've NEVER heard anyone say fairycake. Loads of people say cupcake in England too omg
the only fairycakes i know of is the 12 pack one that you could get from asda or tesco
never heard anyone say cupcake. where do you live?
+jake pains I live in london haha everyone says cupcake around me
+Samsam Ali yo just read that cupcakes and fairycakes are different things in UK but the same thing in America hence the confusion when we were chatting about differences to each other^^
I think fairy cake is an old term for them because we used to use it a lot up north when I was younger but everyone says cupcake now
Okay I live in England so I'm going to share my opinion on some of this. :D
1. We say "cupcake" in my area specifically. You can also say "Fairy cake" but we mainly use this phrase to refer to the small and plain sponge cakes. The ones with the icing and such on are referred to as "cupcakes" here!
2. To be fair I say both "line" and "queue", depends on how I feel that particular day.
3. Again I say both "elevator" and "lift".
4. I still don't understand the "first floor" "ground floor" thing because different places use different terms. So I'm always like "You mean first floor as in the bottom or the second floor?" It can get very confusing. xD
5. Never heard of "safe" being used in that way before... Maybe it's just where I come from though. xP
Also another idea would be the word "chips". "Chips" in England is in reference to what is called "Fries" in America. And if I'm correct "Chips" in America is "Crisps" in England!
wow thanks!
Really? In Australia, we call them both "Chips" haha. Well, at least *I* do.
i think jake was right about most of the english things (minus fairy cakes, id say thats more what kids would say when baking) but it you think about it, we watch so many american films and tv shows that we are just used to american english as well as british english lol
♣ Kelly ♣ can i just add, for point 4, i've seen hotels with ground and lower ground floor o.O
I heard that rubber in British English means eraser but in America it means condom, is this true?
Why do two English-speaking people speak Korean😂?
Because we live, love, and work out of Korea.

etc
education we followed British but influence by US hahaha
That's right
but mostly we use british rightt
I'm Malaysian too, but I'm raised in an American English environment. Sometimes though, "British English" slips out from my mouth because of my school's influence. I use American English at school, although they teach "British English" to other students
Same for Singapore

+Serenaloves ckcy of course not lmao mixing the 2 up is fine as long as you're able to explain certain words some americans/brits/etc dont understand

This just made me realise that us, Singaporeans, use both American and British English. But Singlish the best la.
No argument there! XD
same as Malaysia,totally agree
IKR!!!! was thinking the same too! #singlish best lah hahaha XD
Singlish is the best😂 no other languages can beat it one
Ikr?! I realised that we use both! But Singlish is da bomb!!!
this video seriously helped me so much! I've been living in England for over four months now yet I didn't realise how many American words I use instead of the British ones :O
Amira2907 bri ish
we use both term and semester in Aus :)) and I think Australian English is like in between of British and American haha
well I know in my school, one school year would have two semesters, and each semester would have two terms. so....
Its same in Canada too
Same in Indonesia. we use british words like lift and queue but also american words for semester
+M.R. Yan lol same

Discutir candy floss e cotton candy é tipo biscoito e bolacha no br
HueHueHue
kkkkkkk vdd...É bolacha u.u
UHISAUHFIUSHGUI BERROO
Hatsuharu Sohma cookie, biscuit, and scone
I'm from Malaysia but I find both British and American English actually applies here. it is said that Malaysia follows British English but the American English terms are quite popular here too 🙋
I've heard people here in the u.s. use both queue and line but line is more frequently used.
Ajumma Nobody uses QUE like that in America as in standing in que for the ride at Disneyland. Nobody says that shit, lol. We would use it like the next song in a playlist or next song in the cue.
Your friend is so funny! I enjoyed this video so much, and learned so much and LAUGHED so much! 😂😂😂
I really like hearing Jake talking in English, he's handsome !

I was confused that for a long long time. Now I was refreshed! Thanks Dave!!! Really love this series, I can learn English much more:)
u forgot the most shocking one. Pants. Pants in american english is the usual long pants but pants in english is underwear, we say trousers instead of pants. i had to learn the hard way... And also chips. chips in english is crisp and we actually call french fries chips.... im still confused to this day

when you're canadian and most of these terms are just interchangeable 😂
As you know, Hong Kong was a British colony. However, English words that we use nowadays are more and more American. For example, "elevator" is as popular as "lift". For "flats", I call them "apartments" almost 100%.
I know original english is british 😂 but whenever i have english lesson, always using US english ver. 😂
how can i never knw this channel existt it SOOOOOo GREATTTTTTTTT i luv ur chnel so muchh

I like this. I studied in Hong Kong, suppose we learn British English but I don't know why some of them are American. Though watching this was quite confused, it is fun and I can learn more. Hope to have part 2.

Hey do you have any bloopers ? I'd love to see a whole compilation cause theyre the funniest :D I also love seeing you and jake together you need to record more videos together :Dx
Thank you Dave. You are so fun. One thing I would like to point out. Actually, the word "term" is used in US, too. Usually if a school has semester system, they prefer to using semester but if a school has quarter system, then they use the word "term." In particular, In California and Illinois, many schools choose quarter system, so the word, term, is mostly used.
Great video Dave! Love your videos about comparing languages!!!!💜💜💜
There's also different spellings too.
I'm British and when we spell mum we spell it "mum" most of the time.
And in America it's mostly spelt "mom".
In England we mostly spell neighbour "neighbour".
And in America it's mostly spelt "neighbor".
Dave, I found your channel 1 hour ago and now I'm madly in love... ♥
Term is used in American English.
For instance, WPI has 6 terms, and 3 semesters, two terms during fall, two during spring, and two during summer
i have a British coworker and for the first while i worked with her she would always tell me to take out the bins. i would look at her funny. then she points to the garbage. lol
Malaysian use both/either one of the US or UK English XD
Cupcake - US
Cotton candy - US
Semester - US (but we say "mid-term exam" as well LOL
Line up & Queue up - BOTH
Ice lolly - UK
Sneakers - US
Elevator & Lift (usually we say "lift" but the signboard wrote "elevator"
Ground floor - UK
Football - UK
Safe - US
Flat - BOTH
i'm so glad you're still friends from hello stranger
In New Zealand we mostly use British English but not always, I guess, 'cos I've never heard 'Fairy Cake'. We say 'Semester'. Although maybe only at university? I don't remember using 'term', ever, but I definitely remember saying 'semester' at uni, but not at college. (Just btw, 'College' is a synonym of 'High School'. My high school was called 'Avondale College.) 'Line' or 'queue' are used equally. We don't say 'ice bar' or 'ice lolly' or 'popsicle' we say 'ice block'. I guess we say 'sneakers'? I don't think I've ever heard 'trainers'. I think I'd call them sports shoes or running shoes, but, I guess I'm not a shoe person. 'Elevator' vs 'lift', too, can go either way.
Also, as an example, at Auckland University (when I was there), the library had a G floor, but about thirty meters away there was a small walkway that connected two buildings, and it had an elevator that started on the first floor.
'Flat' or 'apartment' are also pretty interchangeable, now, but I guess 'flat' is preferred?
I've NEVER heard anyone say "fairy cake"
That's funny 😂😂
I love how he says' "it's delightful". Where is Britain is he from? I haven't heard anyone speak with that accent before.
this was really funny! i was actually having a pretty bad day and this literally made me laugh out loud and it was a great mood booster. thanks :)
In Malaysia, mostly we speaks american english but in writing, teachers encouranged the students to used bristish english. so basically we write in us , speak in uk
I learnt British English at school, but was exposed more to American programmesas I grew up. It was hellishly confusing, but then I didn't care so much about the differences anymore. So, I ended up mixing them together, except for spelling.
i got my english mixed between US and UK but i cant differentiate which is US and UK. but now thanks Dave for sharing. i got so many informations . Thumbs up!
Jake looks adorable when he said fairy cakes. With his pink shirt. LOL
I think in Malaysia... We use all the words from America and British english .. Like they said flat is an apartment ..we also say flat as a surface.. In English education we use British english more than american..but when we were outside .. We use america english.. It up to you to speak america english or british english..
Correct me if I have mistake in my english..BTW we don't use word fairy cake in Malaysia ..we use cupcake most..
