Ya, “mine golly ms Molly”!!! I will NEVER NEVER appreciate what it takes, not only to compose such music, but for the human mind to “DIGEST” & play this music! One has to “read” each & every note on the page, then “DIGEST” it in his head, then practice it so it becomes “second nature”, so it can come out his fingers the way the composer wanted it to!!! After ALL THAT WORK, memorizing comes easy, as it flows out his fingers, without much thought!! “Cruise control”! I don’t know of anything more amazing that the human mind has accomplished than seeing what you’ve just seen here with Mr. Boris. It’s a “SINGULAR EFFORT”, unlike a brain surgeon, where TEAMWORK is necessary to perform a complex operation! Yes, to me, the playing of this music is more amazing than brain surgery! I sit here STUNED! “Hallalujah I’m a bum”!
This is EXTREMELY emotional playing. I am shocked that some people say he's all about 'technique', meaning accuracy and speed. I'd say it's clear he doesn't care at all about that - there are quite a few smudges here and there. This isn't nearly as pristine a performance as can be found on the internet. But does it really matter? The music is deeply emotional, it's alive, it speaks and it touches. It's not hysterical, or over-suffering; if you want that, search elsewhere. Smashing performance!
Some people complain that Berezovsky is all technique and no heart but I don't know, to me I do feel the emotion, maybe it's not the emotion others would be looking for in a piece like this but it's there nonetheless. To my ears at least. I think the fact that he's stoic makes him seem less invested when you watch him play. I like him a lot. But of course we're all entitled to our opinions.
Like liszt, he doesn't indulge in meritricious gestures. His movement at the keyboard is purposeful but effortless. The er Knutton arises from the music. If the audience want amateur dramatics they should listen to a showman like Liberace. Berezovsky always does scintillating, but it arises from intellectual engagement, not histrionics. Liszt admitted that in his early years he was showy and flamboyant, but he renounced such empty showmanship. When he saw performers flailing with their arms he'd say something like, "I haven't come here to watch you doing your washing!" He would have approved of this performance.
I agree completely. BB's technique is outstanding, phenomenal in fact, but he plays with a lot of heart. There's a directness and straightforwardness with BB. A pianist doesn't have to display lots of emotion in order to play with emotion.
well, I could be wrong, of course. But this is my impression. It may be that this style of playing finds a lot of acceptance to some people. For me, it is as described...
@sieurvalmont The audio is extremely, extremely compressed. This completely messes with the dynamics. The original performance would not have such strange dynamics.
Eventhough im a fan of Berezowski I must admit There is more warmth in Kissin's version, whom remains my favorite pianist of all !!! Good interprétation overall !!!
Technically better than that Kissin performance that everyone claims is so great, and no more vapid. As usual, he sabotages an otherwise very good performance with his dry as sand pedaling, though this did help produce some interesting coloristic effects in the section following that ossia. I thought the canzone was way too fast, and really lacked any of the vocal qualities that it was meant to have (otherwise Liszt would not have called it a canzone). Fantastic repeated notes and chordal playing!
Really love this song... but i think for this version it was to rush and the crescendo is the fist lack of this version (maybe the setting or something like that) but still a good playing...
amazing technique, as always.... but i think that his choice of tempi and dynamics is not very good... there are parts, that he plays rather slowly and then he suddenly fastens up very much... and i start to think that he plays too "dry", some parts remind me of a bad pogorelich-performance...
he really plays everything very dynamic and in an absolutly technical perfection, but in my opinion he is toooooooooo fast. i really like the performance of george bolet.
the first part is played as if it would be a competition of "how fast" and no intention of going into the deep. I really am not interested in technique-circus at the piano. Also in the rest of the piece, the fast parts are often played in a manner that sounds like "playing it away" and rushing to the finish line.
Obiously beresovzky playing liszt, are the best song ever played, but I like he play others song, 4 ex. Totentanz, Dance maqabre, moonlight 3rd movement, la campanella, etc. It would be awesome.
I love this piece, but I believe that it requires considerable attention to the dynamics, which Berezovsky lacks in this particular performance... Either way, his technique is phenomenal. I have never seen a more focused and precise individual at the piano.
I'm sorry to ask, but I can help it. Many people comment the same thing. He makes it look so easy to play..... so what? I'm listening not more than 40% of the potential of this piece, of it's musical content.
that's just technique here.where is expressivity? dont like it playing the classical piano doesn't mean that you have to play flawlessly without emotion
I agree with what you mean, but I'm not sure if it's about heart. I think you just have to find the music's meaning, the composer's intentions. In my opinion Berezovsky doesn't achieve much in that sense.

Indeed! Great performance! Boris is great pianist!❤️

I agree wholeheartedly!
I agree if you see the Mephisto waltz, he plays with so much emotion you can see it in his facial expression and his interpretation.
Like liszt, he doesn't indulge in meritricious gestures. His movement at the keyboard is purposeful but effortless. The er Knutton arises from the music.
fantastic technique, fantastic control and performance
1:14 Love how the camera just suddenly zooms in like there's an intense fighting scene xD All the intensity though!!
Yes..what a performance
Superb performance, and wonderful camera work!
He plays some of the really hard parts so calmly and precisely, it's beautiful to watch :)
He is greatest!!!
I love Boris...he is amazing...
i hate how it makes this look so easy. such an amazing performer.
It isn't even the most difficult piece. I played this and it is fairly playable.
Ij my opinion one of the best performances of this masterpiece by Liszt... Control and feelings at the same time
Great performance, he gives the piece what it deserves!
I love Berezovsky, you always get a sense of the effort involved when watching him play.

@sfd1984 This is very sensitive of you. Most enlightening. I sincerely thank you.
U all watch kissin's version also available on youtube !
For me Kissin’s version is the only one that compares to Berezovsky’s.
i play boogie very fast up to 240 bpm and i thought i can play the piano...but this guy is fucking incredible
grandioso!
0:40 I simply love the way it goes
thanks for these, i wanted to go to the festival, but couldn't

5:20 best part
well i loved it
WOW
Let me summarize the comment section for you:
50% [He plays with no emotion.]
50% [He plays with emotion]
You're welcome
I heard Kissin, Cziffra, Hamelin etc.. many player's tarantella. But this play is the best. It is very accurate and very tension too.
와우
Very dry audio though. Still nobody beats Josef Hofman on this piece
Génial
well, I could be wrong, of course. But this is my impression. It may be that this style of playing finds a lot of acceptance to some people. For me, it is as described...
@sfd1984 Ok why do people say you cant hear the crescendo, when you can perfectly hear it? :|
@sieurvalmont The audio is extremely, extremely compressed. This completely messes with the dynamics. The original performance would not have such strange dynamics.
So sad his career ended as it did. Boris Berezovsky 1969-2022.
Eventhough im a fan of Berezowski I must admit There is more warmth in Kissin's version, whom remains my favorite pianist of all !!!
Good interprétation overall !!!
Fenesta Vascia! *_*
@sfd1984 Audio engineers shouldn't mess with that!

Totally agree with you 100%.
@Barbapippo unfortunately being his brother, I wish we had have done.
@GL3NE I exactly AGREE with You! :)
Really love this song...
but i think for this version it was to rush and the crescendo is the fist lack of this version (maybe the setting or something like that)
but still a good playing...
@twooffour i didn say that he does, actually
This guy make it look so easy yet its extremely hard :P.
@sfd1984 As much as I love natural dynamics, I compress all my classical music for listening in the car.
effortless
amazing technique, as always....
but i think that his choice of tempi and dynamics is not very good... there are parts, that he plays rather slowly and then he suddenly fastens up very much... and i start to think that he plays too "dry", some parts remind me of a bad pogorelich-performance...
Buenisima interpretacion.
I'd Like to tell him, "Please to record yourself playing liszt totentanz" D:
he really plays everything very dynamic and in an absolutly technical perfection, but in my opinion he is toooooooooo fast.
i really like the performance of george bolet.

Either way, his technique is phenomenal. I have never seen a more focused and precise individual at the piano.
Uhmazing.
OOH he is playing it too fast the subito piano have to be really cleared and be really in harmony of what it was and what is now
TOO hard in the middle section
He looks so easy to play this piece
I'm sorry to ask, but I can help it. Many people comment the same thing. He makes it look so easy to play..... so what? I'm listening not more than 40% of the potential of this piece, of it's musical content.
that's just technique here.where is expressivity? dont like it
playing the classical piano doesn't mean that you have to play flawlessly without emotion
I found this disappointing. Second half just too fast.

No plz
everybody in the back looks like a fake
Sorry but where is his heart?
Oh i'm sure you can play better. Stupid peasant.
Thanks for the offense. I think you could have the same problem, oh great master.
+Elia Langiu Moan moan complain complain i hate this waaaaaahhhhhhhhhh
I agree with what you mean, but I'm not sure if it's about heart. I think you just have to find the music's meaning, the composer's intentions. In my opinion Berezovsky doesn't achieve much in that sense.
I'd say mechanics instead of technique. If you really have a good technique you would achieve the best musical results.
Yes, and he managed to ruin it with that stupid staccato in the left hand... what a wastw of talent and mechanical ability
sorry, but.. awful interpretation
2:00 beautiful melody
