Has anyone ever tried to legislate cyclists off road?

Great video Teri! Education is the key. Both for drivers and cyclist! But even more importantly for the people who make the laws!

I would recommend looking at "Not Just Bikes" maybe doing a collaboration with them. He talks about how poor the US roads are in comparison to the Netherlands.

Very well put Terri and I'm confident this video is yet another small building block towards a better education for everyone in regards to traffic laws! The most mind-blowing thing to me, as a foreigner, is the lack of education and real-world practice with regards to obtaining a driver's license. Eduction, through videos like yours, are crucial and I think it all starts with stricter rules and more practice for beginning drivers.

I always found it crazy that I have been legally driving on the road since before I turned 15. Even with a learner permit and only being allowed to drive with an adult in the vehicle, it seems too young. I think that might be part of the reason many get that entitlement feeling when they are on the road. At that age, I should have spent less time learning how to parallel park and more time learning about the laws and consequences for not obeying them.

I have a short work commute under 3 miles. I've done this over 1000 times. Ride sidewalks and parking lots as much as possible. Drivers are addicted to cellphone use while driving. Never stopped by cops except one time in winter when they were looking for someone. Stay Hard brothers and sisters 💪

It's a yes and no answer, Car/Truck Drivers and Cyclist need to learn to share the roads. Riding on the foot path is dangerous for people walking, backing out of driveways, etc. Education and laws are the only way forward. Another good example is to disable a mobile phones from use if the speed is above 25k
You know my story, tomorrow (Tuesday) is 2 years since we lost Michelle to a hit and run

A driver should never be able to use a hand held mobile in a car. Research shows using a mobile is more dangerous than driving drunk. The phone should therefore be immobilised if the car engine is running.

The best drivers "have your back", regardless of whether you are a pedestrian or in a vehicle. I have experienced drivers who clearly had the right-of-way; ..... and not hit me even though I made a dangerous error in judgment while on my bike.

I would like to think most drivers are actually like this. 🙏🏻

I also was curious about the bill. It doesn't seem like it's "banning cyclists" like she's saying. The bill is only 4 pages (according to the Nevada state website) and it only further expands on the laws she mentions...all of which make sense, like she said.
I guess, technically, it bans cyclists (and electric scooter users) from riding on a road with a 65 MPH speed limit. (I don't know about you, but riding a bike on a highway seems silly.) Maybe that's where she got her 4,400 miles figure?
I could easily be wrong. Can you let me know if I'm wrong @imterribee?

And I think that’s the mentality that the legislators have because they don’t ride bikes on the roads. Being banned from riding on any roads no matter the speed limit is still being banned. Well, not entirely, but requiring special use permits basically means no one is going to bother. How many days ahead would we then have to plan for a morning ride when we are used to just getting up and going? Is it even going to be possible to be approved?
I understand it sounds crazy for us to ride on roads with speed limits 65 or higher. You need to understand those are the safest roads for us to ride with the least amounts of incidents. They are all outside city limits. They have far less traffic, very wide shoulders protected by rumble strips. Drivers are more likely to be paying better attention at faster speeds. Unless someone is driving under the influence or just plain evil, there is almost no chance for collision.
So many of my friends have been hit within city limits. I even know of a guy who was killed in a 15mph speed zone just going out to check his mail in front of his house. It’s not any safer for cyclists to ride within the city limits.
The only people I know who were hit on the highways were my five friends who were killed in December. The driver was on meth!! It was not the cyclists being there that was the issue and that’s what they are basing this proposal on.
Again, I’m sure there are more cyclists out there who were killed on highways, but there are far more killed within city limits all over this country. Sometimes it’s the cyclists fault, but mostly it’s because people aren’t paying attention and they are driving careless. That was the point of my video. We need to make the roads safer for everyone and that starts with changing the driving mentality in this country from entitled to respectable. Forcing us to only ride within city limits is most likely only going to cause more cycling deaths and accidents. 🤷🏼‍♀️
