#DOAG . Death of a Game is a series dedicated to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the death of a game or company. nerdSlayer defines the term "death" in the context of the show as either... 1. Literally dead. 2. Had a mass exodus of players and never recovered (expectations etc). 3. The company ceased to exist. We follow a timeline of events, to uncover clues concerning why a game or company doesn't do well, and attempt to put it all together at the end for a deduction explaining how or why the game failed based on the evidence gathered.
Rules:
1: No discrimination or hate speech.
2: No affiliation links that do not belong to nerdSlayer.
3: No political/religious talk or debate .
4: Any points you make have to be substantiated either in explaining your opinion or when stating facts you need to back these up with reliable sources.
5: Do not argue moderation decisions in public, if you have an issue PM the mods.
6: We don't allow self promotion, giveaways or anything of similar nature from community members on this discord without nerdSlayer's permission.
7: Wherever possible if you initiate a discussion try to do so in an appropriate channel for it. For example game news could go in game-table a story on the latest EVE heist however would belong in mmo-booth or the latest GPU shortage can go in tech-wizards
8: Spoilers have to be marked at all times as a spoiler by using /spoiler or || before and after the message. Beside this outside of the spoiler you should make clear ahead of it what the spoiler is about, like the latest chapter in a video game or something.

Do you ever think about how lucky you were to start doing DoaG videos in this decade full of massive commercial failures?
You've definitely got your work cut out for you in the foreseeable future 😅
Will you be doing a death of a game on warhaven??
Depending how the next Ubisoft games will sell we might get *Death of a Company: Ubisoft*
I would love to see that
@@banishedepsilon1802 Same.
People like y'all are the reason for the decline of Gaming you have to be entitled and that's a shame that you want less games
@@ChrisJohnson-nv2ir People don't want less games, people want less corporate greedy live service slop
@BenPrower it's not just live service games it's everything did you not watch the Video Game Awards and see how many people hated almost every game because of woke reason it's childish
When you say the word eSports when revealing a shooter, the chances that it dies within a year go up 95%
Especially when CoD, the game you're shamelessly ripping off, is seen as the runty child of FPS esports lol
Corps need to learn that you can't artificially build an esport scene and hope it gains players. Its the other way around.
For real, i HATE when they start building the eSports scene before the game is even out. Thats just a waste of resources and money that could help improve the game and actually organicaly build a competitive scene
"Hey 12 year old me, we need you to name our game"
"XDEFIANT"
Nah, it was about the lower case "x"'s on either of the word. xDEFIANTx, that was someone's gamer tag 15 years ago.
8 year old me would have definitely named a game, "Elden Ring."
One factor that I believe heavily restricted this game was the fact it wasn’t on steam or even epic games. It was an Ubisoft connect exclusive and nobody wants to deal with that piece of garbage
They were being defiant 😂
i dont get it ,i dont care on what launcher is a game if i like it i got my games on EAPlay,Steam,Epic,battlenet,..
I don't think it's that big of a deal if it was actually a good game. Fortnite and LoL are doing fine and this game got 15 million players to try it out. Very few actually enjoyed it enough to bother sticking around.
They never learn do they? Always trying to shove uplay down people's throats
Nothing about this game was actually casual. High TTK, Ridiculous movement, and abilities all create skill gaps that casual audiences don't want to learn. As you said in the video, the game was also far from being the grounded classic arcade shooter it was heavily advertised to be and people stopped playing after they realized that.
Great point!
The game didn’t shut down because of a player count problem. The player count was increasing at the time of shut off AFAIK. You are correct that those things create a higher skill ceiling but no one was “quitting” in mass for any reason. It’s not what killed this game. Some arbitrary business decision did.
@JustHereForTheDialogue The casual audience quit, and only sweats remained. Ubisoft never released the official numbers before pulling the plug, so no one really knows if they were good enough to justify supporting the game.
@@GurksTheGamer everyone always make this claim about every game that “only the sweats stayed around” regardless if there’s evidence of that or not. Again all signs point to the fact the game was growing so I don’t know how you make the assumption that anyone was leaving in meaningful numbers at all.
@JustHereForTheDialogue Game was growing? So you're telling me the game retained and surpassed the 11 million plus players that logged on at launch? Which evidence suggested the game was growing? Please, elaborate.
Ubisoft management approved doing games based on their iconic IPs
but didn't feature the iconic characters from said IPs
the only thing that will make it stands out more
Not a fair point, people would then complain that the game would look dumb with five Sam Fishers running around vs 5 Vaas Montenegros
@@TheRama2299been working for marvel rivals

Quite literally not a single one as far as I know
The only one I can think of is Fortnite BR, which was considered a PUBG killer at the time.
@KaoruMzk yea that's actually true.
not a ____killer per se, but whoever in charge at Nacon/KT had a serious audacity to think their semi failed, live service arcade racer TDU Solar Crown is gonna compete with FH5, TC Motorfest, and most of all, GTA VI of all games (yes, that was their actual statement)
and to no one surprise, that game fell flat on so many ways possible due to them turning once beloved TDU franchise into whatever tf is this another always online live service slop to the demands of absolutely no one
COD was supossed to be the medal of honor killer, and well, the fact that there is no medal of honor anymore seens like a Hard evidence that COD achieved its goal lol
I think I'd be a good detective as long as the word "CLUE" appeared in capitalized block text next to anything I needed for my investigations.
"Call of Duty with it's Omni Movement taking inspiration from TitanFall-"
Max Payne wants his credits back with a 2 decade build-up lmao.
Max Payne allowed for you to jump omni directionally, while I agree it's inspirational as well I don't think it's so clear cut. Also Max Payne 3 is underrated
@@nerdSlayerstudioss True! Also, thanks for the response! Love your content.
This actually made me somewhat sad because this was a promising attempt at making a Call of Duty alternative that just fell victim to publisher interference.
First Time? Mine was blacklight retribution.
What promise😂 Bruh this game was literally made to fuel games like AC and Far Cry. They shut it down cause it wasn't making money
Nah nobody made them make a hero shooter and brand it as a call of duty killer this one was on the studio themselves.
This game looks like it came out in 2008. I wouldn't call it particularly promising. The whole specialists thing alone was frustrating to play around. The last time CoD did that was Black Ops IV i believe.
@@Alabaster-White...
It has been quite a long time since I've heard that name...
This entire decade is becoming a cautionary tale about the siren song of IPOs…
This game feels like five people each pitched their own idea for a multiplayer shooter then proceeded to work on a single game without even talking to each other.
Damn that was fast…
Ngl XDefiant gameplay felt like an early FPS game… like Warface..🫣
Warface is not an early fps game
Felt like a Roblox game to me🤷🏾♂️
damn you right, it feels like warface but suck
Well, Warface is still standing after a decade. The game is definitely from a different era but to be honest gameplay is still very satisfying, it's just riddled with pay to win and balancing issues
That’s what we wanted…
The first time I heard about this game was when they announced it was shutting down. That should probably speak volumes about the marketing.
Good for you you are not watching twitch
Or UA-cam
The failure of XDefiant was NOT how little it was marketed.
It was how it was targeted. Most FPS fans knew about it, but there were some issues with its mechanics and Ubisoft preventing it to be on Steam made it a big issue.
In spite of many mistakes, a core of players stuck with it.
Bro it had 15 million registered players wdym😭
Another Live Service Slop bites the dust. 🚬
Needed it not to if ur a cod fan who hates the modern cod slop
@@NatexReeseBruh it wouldn't have effected CoD even if it was successful. Y'all gotta understand that these games coexist with each other more than play the Prey and Predator Game. If XD found it's footing and community then it would've just been that... They found their community. Meaning CoD, Fortnite, Siege, PUBG, BF, Halo, CS, Valorant, Apex etc etc would've all still been here doing their own thing
@@jeremybrown9611I actually enjoyed XDefiant, but I only played it like once a month. People will play FPS games every evening and wonder why they get burnt out.
The interesting thing here is: A setting where all UbiSoft IPs are thrown into one can very easily work and be good in itself. Because that's what the Blood Dragon animated series did.
If XDefiant would have just gone and be part of that, instead of trying its own version of it, it would have a memorable visual identity, would have some of the established characters from their respective IPs (even if they wouldn't be playable), and could serve as an expansion of that series as well.
Generic early 2010's F2P shooter released at a time where they've mostly ceased to exist and the few giants that still do have been in semi maintenance mode for years.
Not sure what the hell they were thinking branding this as a CoD competitor let alone releasing it 10 years after it should have but its fate was sealed from the moment the gameplay was revealed.
This channel has covered Dirty Bomb's decline; This is the same exact kind of game just with a different coat of paint and less wallrunning. Given that it failed while being a much more polished game then this turd never stood a chance, respectivelly.
Nice callback
It's not about how ubisoft is a terrible company and produces slop.
It's about the friends we made a long the way, calling them crap.
XDefiant didn’t fail. Ubisoft did.
XDefiant was fun.
But management sucks. They don’t know how to do a free game and they were super close.
FORTNITE DIDNT CLOSE FOR MONTHS BECAUSE “THEY ARE A BETA”. They kept going all the way till “we have a finished version”.
The game should have kept working from 2023 all the way to today.
But instead they “developed” the game for months to come back with 0 improvements to hit registration but a collection of bad skins for player retention.
This. It was fun for a while... til I moved over to The Finals.
The concept (and early gameplay) was cool, but not enough content or players to justify staying.
@@Skyline_NTR Content yeah, but not enough players? Dude I would find lobbies immediately in 200+ hrs on the game idk about that lol
@@KrisNation it was painfully slow depending on your region, South America in my case, was dead on arrival with 0 interest from basically anyone here
XDefiant absolutely sucked are you crazy? Management allowed them to delay it like 4 times, infinite funds to make sure it works. The game was unbelievably bad at release, I played it a good bit. You should NOT let devs do whatever they want.
with the numerous factors contributing to xdefiant's failure, there's a lowest common denominator - ubisoft. and gotham city imposters was a gem.
Genuinely agree. I actually enjoyed xdefiant and quite well. It’s a shame
Good to see you doing well Slayer :) Amazing video as always.
Appreciate you!
This cod rival was not the cod rival that we thought of.
"it feels like a Fade chase, or a desperate attempt to stay modern and relevant" That quote sums up Ubisoft in recent years I feel. Its no wonder they are GOING UNDER or getting bought out by China.
Huh, yeah I remember that Gothem city Imposters case. I feel like that is something that can be said for the Industry as a whole, no one does anything "risky" anymore and play it TOO SAFE. Like if something looks and feels "generic", no one really wants to play it.
Honestly, XDefiant had a potential to compete Call of Duty. But too bad, Ubisoft being Ubisoft, its a live service game. And I do remember XDefiant old logo as well but it seems like an insult to "Tom Clancy's" title.
xD
This game was never going to compete with cod.
I genuinely had no idea they attached Tom Clancy's name to XDefiant before it released, I'm glad they pulled back on that one.
3:33 to skip the sponsor.
The sad part is I loved XDefiant initially but they really felt slow on changes like the ability to hop around and fire a 1 shot kill weapon, the lack of match making which I get can be it's own appeal but we are past the Couch Multiplayer era, people value their time a lot more so nothing worse than hoping into a match and just being dominated by someone who absolutely belongs in their own lobby.
xD
I'm mostly surprised it lasted this long!
This game showed me that for all the “no SBMM” hype, it’s not the real enemy…
Overuse of it might be one piece of the puzzle, but the real important parts are game design and even the player base. People just don’t play shooters like they did 10-20 years ago. When you put all of them in one place, you’re bound to get your regular esports wannabes and movement optimizers. They aren’t rare enough to be the odd ones out by now. At that point, it’s just the haves and the have nots. Either get good or you’re gonna have a rough time.
And game design-wise, a lot of online games would legitimately benefit from lowering the mechanical skill ceiling, not even kidding. In a game like Xdefiant, coupling long TTK regular weapons with 1 shot snipers is just a hilarious misstep when aiming and moving is just not that hard. COD as well. It gets faster every year and people keep up, sweat and frustration and all. That’s not SBMM alone making the game sweaty, it’s the game itself! Dexterity is the primary indicator of skill progression, where slower game sense used to balance it out and keep things chill.
Overwatch even held a classic event to let people play the 1.0 state again and, hilariously bad balancing aside, it was just a more relaxed game with regular peaks and valleys that made it easier to not take as seriously. In some cases, characters who were less powerful relative to the rest of the cast were still more fun than their current iterations because you had to make more interesting decisions (burst fire for accuracy, or mag dump for damage in Soldier’s case).
Mind you, lowering the skill ceiling would almost certainly be an unpopular decision online, but I’m SURE there’s a balance to strike that’s better than what we’ve been getting in the past few years.
A game where 2:1 KDR is "high" already has the skill ceiling so low you cannot stand without bumping your head on it.
Nerdslayer sounding like he drank a few beers before recording this video lol
lmao, i was sick
@@nerdSlayerstudioss Hope you're feeling better now my man

I mean who the hell names their game "XDefiant." Its not as catchy as "Fortnite", "Overwatch", or even "Deadlock"
Literally drop the ‘X’ & ‘Defiant’ sounds kinda cool. It’s like it was named by Elon Musk.
It sounds pretty catchy lol, that’s just an ass nitpick at this point. Just “defiant” sounds very barebones
Thing is, I no longer have unlimited gaming time. Nor does your average gamer. If a game wants 50+ hours of my time, I'm expecting something fresh, not Assassin's Creed 14.
I love when a game is ruined by short-sighted corporate decisions and the actual devs are forced to abandon projects they’ve worked years on 🙃
RIP XDefiant, was fun while it lasted
Game should've never been made
Call of Overwatch: We had no 10 year game-plan and only made it because we wanted a piece of the pie, but also made it F2P meaning you would miss out on sunken cost fallacy.

The way things are going in the gaming industry, Nerdslayers gonna be busy with content for a long while. 😂
It's not ignorance. Just like ABK; it's a "boys club" and he was protecting the boys.
Almost every problem with the game can be traced back to the engine. Anyone who ahs played the division can tell you that the engine ahs been struggling for quite some time and the fact that this dev team not only had to work with this engine, but also do something completely unprecedented with it is just a recipe for disaster. From what I heard it killed a lot of the creativity that the wanted for the game.
They could have spent resources on making another ghost recon or another rainbow six Vegas
Season 3 is really good and they released a lot of content that was planned for future seasons as well. Some of it partially finished. But if you still have access to the game, give it a shot.
Gonna have to add to that list with one particular issue it’s had since reveal; the name. What the hell does XDefiant even mean? Why are they putting emoticons/emoji in the title of what is supposed to be Tom Clancy’s Call of Duty? Call of Duty and Medal of Honor at least have titles that make sense, with the whole military theming. XDefiant just sounds like the marketers crawled out of their playpen and grabbed a random word out of the dictionary and put an X in front of it because it sounded cool to them and them alone
It’s crazy that XD was used unironically in this game title
Lol right?
It was hyped as a cod killer but had nothing in common with cod. Ironsight is still the best cod competitor out there and has been for years.
Sadly awaiting a Deceive Inc breakdown
Working on in it in some . months
Life service games expect us to play on one map one new character for three months
All the while sitting on 12 maps, like the recent Xdefiant update showed
@@nerdSlayerstudioss 12 maps that should've been in the game at launch.
@@nerdSlayerstudioss that’s why they game died 12 maps would’ve made it feel a lot better to play constantly with 4 operators
I remember the moment the first Xdefiant trailer was shown, I knew it was a Ubisoft game, and for the first time in so long, I saw those goggles. Sam Fisher's iconic 3 eye, bright green goggles. I couldn't believe Splinter Cell could be coming back...then came the gameplay. An online hero shooter using a bunch of Ubisoft games as classes...the way my smile melted into horrified disgust will stick with me for a long time.
If only they actually put successful franchises in it. Half the roster are from dead franchises (Splinter Cell hasn't existed beyond Twitter teasers since 2011, Ghost Recon's last game got disliked to cancellation, Watch Dogs got shelved) and the rest aren't exactly doing well either. They had an Assassin's Creed faction planned for *SEASON 3* when they should've been in from day 1 to attract more players, same with the R6 Siege faction. Even assuming generic characters are kept instead of prominent characters from these franchises, why not Division Agents instead of one group of forgettable NPCs fought in the games? It's just bad from a strategic perspective.
" A Hero shooter that takes inspiration from.." shows image of TF2 Pyro ".. Classic CODs"
I remember testing the game in 2021 or 2022. I could tell as soon as I picked up a weapon and fired... That this wasn't for me.
Tom Clancy's Death of a Game, presented by Tom Clancy's NerdSlayer Studios
😆
Lol
Plain and simple and doesnt need a 30 minute J/O session. The game released in such a bad state that certain basic game modes werent available at all, and you couldnt play all the game modes on all the maps. It was poorly designed and rushed by the devs. They over promised their own company and crapped the bed
I loved XDefiant on launch. The only reason people wanted to play the game is because there was no SBMM in the casual modes compared to the newer CoD games where SBMM is EVERYWHERE, and the fact that XDefiant has a better working anti-cheat and controller players weren't OP. XDefiant has definitely fallen due to lack of advertising (that wasn't getting streamers/content creators to play the game once or twice) and well, Ubisoft themselves. With the announcement of the game shutting down, XDefiant has gotten previous players return to the game, and also the update that just released. There is a very slim chance Ubisoft goes back on the announcement of the sunsetting and just let the game live on with occasional updates (update per 2-3 months).
mfw people find out the game has nothing that makes it unique or stand out when it's like most Ubisoft games whom, as a reminder, do not know what "iconic" means to this day.
very hyped for this ep
You got a cold there dude?
yep, heheh, post bjj tournament sickness
as someone who really liked this game and still play it a bit even now I can say that as much as the game experience netcode wise wasn't that great they actually tried to fix it, now after it's death it's quite consistent and me and my friends didn't have any issues with it, what felt like the true problem is this situation that ubisoft is going to hell and they started axing projects as they try to save themselves.
for what it was this game had potential, from playing both skills and gunplay did blend quite well together, as much as skills sometimes had to be well placed it was quite an enjoyable experience, the fast paced style of the game was really fun, and from playing too many FPS games in this life it did help me and my friends to counter the cheaters if they weren't in full spinbot mode, I just wish ubisoft wasn't made of morons and maybe this game would still be alive and could be better, theres so much content that got released with the season 3 patch that made me even more sad to see it go.
I can definitely say the netcode and hit reg was the primary reason i quit playing. When you get the drop on someone and half your bullets arent registering then they kill you it feels awful. I know they dealt with some of it after an update but i couldnt be bothered to go back by that point.
I couldn't stand the game and dropped it instantly after playing just two matches it was that bad and not fun to play, none of characters were appealing, guns felt weak and not impactful, graphic design on maps was too boring and sterile.
With how amazing Marvel Rivals is doing right now (over 20 million players) I imagine you'll be making "Death of a game: Overwatch 2" sometime next year.
Also if Path of Exile 2 keeps up with it's amazing success you might be doing a vid on Diablo 4 as well. Blizzard is having a rough time right now. lmao
I just wasnt gonna play something called "Xdefiant"... the marketing on this project blew chunks.
What we were promised: Classic Cod
What we got: Clunkier, soulless Black Ops 4 knockoff.
A lot of the failures of XDefiant are on the dev team and I feel like most people refuse to admit that. Regardless of Ubisofts presence, the Dev team more than had the ability to patch bugs, netcode, rework abilities, improve content, expand content, etc. But they were so extrodinarly bad at being devs. I hate to be a bummer, but they were not a good developer team. They failed at practically every mark. I wouldn't even call Rubin a veteran, hes washed up.
This game deserves to be preserved so people can enjoy it at LAN parties.
OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I BEEN WAITING FOR THIS 1 BAD LOL
It had released?! I didn't even know it came out!
I was interested in trying the game but because it wasn't on steam I couldn't be arsed to actually do it
Making a shooter specifically for e-sports is always going to end up in failure. It's better to make a good shooter first with a good core and strong fundamentals and hope that it sticks and then later develop it or portions of it into being e-sports accessible for the userbase that wants it. I basically ignore anything e-sports related, because it will leave you high and dry real fast and all that's left is the diehard sweats that whaled themselves into the game and refuse to let it die.
My take was simple "this feels like a free bootleg cod, which i dont like tobegin with"
I honestly really enjoyed XDefiant when I gave it a spin at launch. I was also a Destiny player at the time; so take my opinion with a heap of salt haha. That being said it really is the crux of the issue with new live service games; if you're interested/open to playing something live service then you probably already have one. They demand too much for you to switch back and forth from my experience. So now I'm back playing BLOPS with my friend group ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Netcode and having to jump around when shooting to be competitive did it for me. Oh and the snipers.
Yeah, man. The snipers were totally busted and still strong today. 😭
crazy to see this game on this channel so soon
I don't even hate modern Ubisoft, they still have an interesting game here and there. But there was a time, feels like very long ago, where I loved the studio so much that it felt like they couldn't Miss.
Some of my Best gaming memories are from Ubisoft games, and I'll always treasure those. It's just hard to imagine the modern studio making many more Best memories in future.
a ftp game lives on its microtransactions. while playing xdefiant, I NEVER felt enticed to spend money. everything on offer was ugly and unappealing and none of the factions had enough personality to make it work.
You mentioned a lot of games that were cancelled during the video. Any chance we'll get those on DoaG? Maybe a sister series about failure to launch,
Definitely. This video, I reference like 3-4 titles alone!
Next (in Future) Death of a Company : Ubisoft
Honest i fell the game needed to pick a lane and stay with it. Their was this massive issue with the game where it never knew what it wanted, half half assed a position between and ended up compromising by picking the worst parts of both.
Random production question: do you ever start your research or your writing early?
Like, xDefiant and Concord are easy examples. It was a pretty safe bet from the outside looking in that these games were going to hit the rocks sooner or later months in advance of when they got official closures. But there are less obvious, big titles this would apply to as well.
Do you ever see a big game that seems shaky and start doing research, or even writing a script? Idk what your process is like, but I imagine it would help you turn around a video that much faster when news breaks. Idk, just curious.
Not the writing itself, but I do keep a particular eye on topics I think upcoming
Long live Libertad. Been playing since day 1 and will keep playing until June when it gets turned off. Very vid...now I'm sad...lol
Right as Call of Duty is hitting the fan, Ubisoft decided to pull the plug on their genuinely good competitor. Can Ubisoft ever do anything right?
This is the first time I have ever heard someone say COD is known for being good at hit detection
The game was just a lighter Black Ops 4, if you ask me
Where were all the anti sbmm people, this game was made for them.
They very quickly realized why they need sbmm.
Honestly I was one of those people until I saw what no SBMM gets you in XDefiant.
@@R4ULTR People didn't realize that sbmm goes back at least a decade. It's always been there in cod.
@@BeersAndBeatsPDXyes but sbmm in classic shooters was dumbed down but more focused on connection based matchmaking. Also the sbmm not being in it was great but the game itself had no identity so people aren’t going to stick around. Cod is just cod and people will always stick with it even with the insane sbmm in it.
I think the real problem is that no one actually wants more CoD, they just want to be happy
They should have gone with the BO3 route not BO4 or just straight up not had heroes. Some factions were way more usable than others. Having characters/operators removed that whole balance issue.
This is not true. By season 2, the factions were balanced extremely well
so it took them 4 months to balance the factions? is this supposed to refute his point
I would argue that the omni movement has less to do with Titanfall and more the do with the setting of BlOps6. Being set in the 90s, the media at the time was all about over the top action, guys diving out of windows as the room explodes, using movement as a means to enhance the action. The devs at Treyarch ran with this concept with them saying in the initial reveal that they wanted every moment to "feel like an action movie." Which I think they did flawlessly, the movement feels insanely responsive and feels like an actual step forward for a franchise that sees very little innovation between titles.

Ttk was too long, movement was strange, 0 content and progression, slow development.
Worst of all to me, bland factions. Like, seriously, this is Ubisoft we're talking about, they could've added the LMB, the Black Tusk, the Privateers, the royal guard from Far Cry 4, but no they went ahead and added what, Libertad and the Highwaymen, the two most mundane and niche factions from New Dawn and Far Cry 5, the two most niche and mundane entries in the series... Then you have Dedsec which is all good in Watch Dogs but the problem is that they're supposed to look like generic hipsters in that game, and they look like generic hipsters here too which simply doesn't work
i saw this one comming from a mile away. you cant market your game as an old school cod shooter then make a worse bo4 and hope that no sbmm will save you. they also lost momentum really hard and at a time when a cod actually turned out good... oh and ubisoft
