I know that the mushrooms were supposed to be the subject and star of the Autumn woodland show, but for me those cheeky horse chestnuts snuck in and stole the show! Love their rich color and soft glow. So nicely done, so it wasn't their fault...you as the artist made them do it! 😉
Good afternoon Paul! I was at a friend’s house this morning showing her how to use an app that helps you draw. Plus we painted a church together. Hers turned out great but she took longer than me to paint so I pulled up your video and painted this scene of mushrooms. Great tutorial! I posted my painting in the Facebook group. It might not be finished yet. I’ll wait and look at it again tomorrow. I have to thank you for your tutorials and for being such a generous teacher. Because of all I’ve learned from you I’m now teaching others how to paint with watercolor. You made me fall in love with watercolor and I’m sharing that love with others and seeing them love watercolor too. That’s a testimony to what a gift you are to this world. Praying your day is full of joy and happiness! Much love to Margot. Both of you are a blessing. ❤❤❤
Hello dear sweet Jacqueline! Your name is beautiful, it sounds aristocratic like Jacqueline Kennedy, Jacqueline Onassis.... A famous name. And my full name is Adelaide, in honor of the Australian city, because when I was born my dad was in Australia on a whaling ship went to sea and they were in the port of Adelaide for repairs and they told him that I was born. Dad liked the city so much that he decided to call me by that name. This is such an interesting story. I wish you, dear beauty Princess Jacqueline, good luck, health, creative growth , creativity and positivity! I am also drawing now, I want to paint all of Paul’s drawings in watercolor, there are 162 of them with today’s lesson. I downloaded all his templates from the site and now there is a lot of work. Dear Jacqueline is always glad to see you and read your messages, you are amazingly kind woman, we may have different views, beliefs, languages, we live on different sides of the planet, but man can always understand and accept who he is with all his individual characteristics!✋😊🖐️😊Peace to the world!!!
@@adelabadova3105 Aw I’m smiling so big right now! You are sweet and a bright ray of sunshine in my life. Your story of being named is so intriguing and you tell it well. I picture you painting a picture of the city while telling the story. My dad also named me. His name was Jack. I think Jacqueline Kennedy was very famous so a lot of girls were named after her. I think it’s an amazing world we live in that we can be friends being pretty much on opposite ends of the earth. God is good to have us meet. 🥰❤️🙏🏻 You are always encouraging and caring. I’m looking forward to seeing some of your art. Much love and prayers for you. 😘🙏🏻❤️
Quite delightful Paul. Yes up here in Scotland in the 60's, I fondly remember gathering conkers with my brother, then the prices of selection began. As I was the younger sibling and a girl! I had to learn from my older brother. Great fun and a seasonal delight.......
Thank you for this beautiful still life. And now I discover that a British man introduced Conkers in France (in Dordogne) in the 90's and that there is now a national Conker championship ... soon at the Olympics 🤭 Of course, we call that game « Le Conker » 😊
Hi Paul, never heard of the game of conkers but, we girls would take the horse chestnuts and drill a hole in them and make necklaces and bracelets from them. This was in Syracuse NY USA 🇺🇸 where I was from. Love this woodland scene, brought back great memories of fall in what was my neck of the woods. 👍🏻🎨❌🍂🍁
Thus is really quite beautiful! I always thought Americans and UK folks spoke the same language until hubby and I started watching Line of Duty. It was hilarious because I had to keep a list and write down so many things to find out what they were talking about, I.e., 1) You fancy a cuppa? 2) bent copper, 3) Houl yer whisht, ahhhh so many but the best by far was…Jesus, Mary and Joseph and the wee donkey. BTW, retreat seems phenomenal !
Always used to play conkers with my mates when I was little, plus it was great fun getting the conkers by knocking them off the trees by throwing a stick up at them
Conkers are from the Horse Chestnut tree which has beautiful white ‘candles’ of flowers in the Spring, they are not edible but some people use them to keep away spiders and kids thread string through them and try to hit each others conker with the aim of splitting them and winning. Chestnuts are from the Sweet Chestnut tree and are edible, mostly roasted at Christmas or used in stuffings and nut loaves. They are contained in very prickly coverings whereas conkers have smooth ones.
Yippeee it’s Watercolor Wednesday! My favorite day of the week. I love how you added the unexpected chestnuts or buckeyes as we call them in Georgia, USA. Buckeyes are carried in people’s pockets to bring good luck. I’ll certainly try to “give this one a go”
I picked up a handful of horsechestnuts only the other week and just having them in my hand brought back all the memories of childhood. I don't think I even managed to get a two-er .. my brothers easily beat mine every time. But happy memories, despite the bruised fingers LOL
We had a huge horse chestnut tree. We had a blast smashing them, but even more fun was going over them with the lawn mower😅 I grew up in Wisconsin,US on a farm, so entertained ourselves a lot. Thank you for a delightful woodlans painting. We have a mushroom farm nearby. It's interesting actually
Thanks so much for another of your great tutorials, Paul. Fantastic colours und guidance. Loved the "unexpected madness" ..which gave me a good laughter😂.
Yes Paul. Playing conkers was something I did at school 60 years ago. (Often being naughty throwing sticks into the tree to knock down the ripe conkers) and often shouted at by the tree owner! Understandably.

Conkers was a game we played at school. Went to a girls school and even in the mid 40s early 50s we never thought of it as a 'boys game' . Conkers have always been a joy to my eyes touch, loed the rich shiny brown and the smooth feel. A seasonal 'worry stone ' !!! Great memories 😊
Another great tutorial Paul your attention to detail is amazing i truly loved this one and it was very nostalgic i hold some wonderful memories of spending hours as a young lad baking conkers , or soaking them in vinegar making the holes threading the string and playing for hours and coming home with sore fingers and knuckles!!! Well done Paul and thank-you
I thoroughly enjoyed this video! Thank you! I’ve never heard of that game played with conkers being raised in CA USA. Sounds like a great boys game! Love the mushrooms! 🍄
These mushrooms and the background are incredible! Some time ago I was thinking about how to achieve this bokeh effect in watercolor. Thank you so much for this inspirational video!
Hello from North Carolina, USA! As soon as I saw your photo of today’s lesson with the chestnuts, I remembered the school yard behind my house near Bronx NY. Boys were kept separate from girls during lunch break and the boys would have those chestnuts swinging! The nuns put a stop to that quickly 🤣 Many thanks to you and Margot for all you do!!
I am Englis living in Australia and fondly remember playing conkers with my brother. We made our own fun and they were indeed the good old days. Anita.

Dear Paul, I was very pleased with the Autumn Woodland Scene tutorial. It's so unique. My favorite is horse chestnut, but it looks fantastic with mushrooms. It was a pleasure to use a variety of techniques. Thank you for this outstanding tutorial.

Wonderful! I can't wait to start this one but I'm wrestling a minky whale this evening. The facebook group work is great to see - warm thanks to them for sharing. Conkering I loved as a kid, splitting that perfect shiny nut from the spiky shell. They could sting but does anyone remember those "clackers" from the seventies, I think. They were a pair of really hard coloured balls strung through and joined at the top. You had to start slowly "clacking" the balls together, then build up momentum till they clacked back and force at speed above your flipping wrist. I think they might have banned those after all the acci unit visits!
Love this! I am gonna give it a try! I live in the USA Illinois. Never heard of the Conchers game. However our game of marbles would be similar. You use your marbles to knock out your opponents marbles!😀You are a marvelous teacher and love watching you paint!

Conkers! Of course...my kid brother used to play with them when we lived in the UK years ago. And this painting is simply stunning! The sprinkled salt makes the background so pretty! Hello Paul, like everyone else on this channel I will add my thanks to your demos and instructions. I have only recently discovered you and have been trying to catch up with your films (from years ago) and am loving them all. I really appreciate the info you pass on regarding paper, paints and brushes along with the percentage of each pigment. I have to say from a beginners point of view I have found one (so far) where you painted in portrait and moved your palette under the camera. This allowed me to actually see how much water you use in conjunction with the percentage of paints. This was an eye opener for me as I could see how you manage to keep the colours flowing by the amount of water you use. My paints are far too thick (like me) and are nothing like the fluid rivers you apply to paper. Could we have more of these please. Many thanks. Barry
Excellent job Paul… the lifting of color with white circles finishes the background perfectly with template. Lov it.. will have to try this one. Cheers from California!
I thought it looked messy and terrible to start with but you created magic! Looks amazing! I only hope i will be able to paint as beautifully as you one day
Oh what a beautiful painting. Its so pretty. I love the bokeh effect. Covid has struck me down so I'm hoping to get to my paints later this week when I feel better. And yes I very much grew up in England playing conkers as a kid...ah the memories. Thanks Paul for another beautiful and brilliant tutorial 👌🙏
Autumn 🍁 wasn't Autumn 🍂 without collecting and playing with conkers !! When we were kids in Northern Ireland, we hollowed out huge turnips for our Halloween lanterns. Beautiful seasonal painting that evokes lots of lovely memories! Brilliant as usual 🍂🍁😊
Lovely woodland painting! Love the colors and contrast. The mushrooms and chestnuts pop off the paper. I'm not a fan of bokeh--too arts and crafts for me--but you made it work. Have a great week.
Oh, what a wonderfully beautiful motif this is again. I can't put into words how happy I am again and again. Thank you very much for this wonderful picture, dear Paul.
Always love listening to the music 🎶 you have got going in the background. Great details & textures of the forest background & chestnuts 🌰. Across the pond here we played a game similar to yours called clackers with not 1 but 2 glass balls/marbles are connected with one string but tied into a small loop in the middle. Instead of hitting an opponent’s conker, 😁 we silly Americans try to clack the marbles together above & below our own hand without injury. 😉 But alas, I am sure you can imagine how dangerous those toys are & the results. 🤣Always a fun painting video each week from you. Hope you’re both enjoying a wonderful rest of the week & weekend ahead! 🎨💕
Thank you for this exercise and thanks to the Facebook group and Margot for the wonderful paintings - each one unique in their own interpretation!! Will give this a go - currently working on the Sussex House!! As always - learn so much!! :0)
Such an outstanding painting with natural colors. Thanks for this great work of art with the great techniques to go with it. The places you showed are lovely as well.
Hi Paul, absolutely loved this tutorial. September has to be the best time of year in England, especially if you lived out of town in the country. As kids growing up we were lucky enough to have our very own horse chestnut tree in our front garden, so had a good supply of conkers and played many a game at junior school. Thank you again for another wonderful painting.
I loved it as I do mushrooms. I think they are gorgeous. I love the whole painting, the colors are awesome and the artwork is magnificent. And I have never heard of that game.
This tutorial was of extreme interest, as I have been commissioned to illustrate 15 pages of a woodland scene, including a fairy ring. I love your work.
Beautiful painting Paul , loved all the effects you have shown. And the bokeh effect made it so whimsical. Will have to try that one. The way you make your colors come together is truly amazing. 💗 The trip for next year sounds lovely. Will have to give it some thought. Never played Conkers 😊 though have read about it .. Thank-you again for making our day with your beautiful tutorials that set our minds going 🎉🎉🎉 Take care 💖

Lovely tutorial Paul, enjoyed it so much and was a joy to paint. Many thanks, You're a great teacher 😊
Glad you enjoyed it
Very enjoyable to watch ..thx
Thanks for watching
Great Paul, thanks. Would love to have a go at this.
Have fun!
I thought it looked messy and terrible to start with but you created magic! Looks amazing! I only hope i will be able to paint as beautifully as you one day
You can do it! ... many thanks
Brilliant coverage of so many techniques.love it Thank you Paul
Thanks so much!
Great to hear ... and get better soon!
Wonderful watercolour Wednesday. Festive season in India. Very pleasant weather but no dramatic Autumn colours.
Thank you for the tutorial.
My pleasure 😊
Autumn 🍁 wasn't Autumn 🍂 without collecting and playing with conkers !! When we were kids in Northern Ireland, we hollowed out huge turnips for our Halloween lanterns.
Beautiful seasonal painting that evokes lots of lovely memories!
Brilliant as usual 🍂🍁😊
Thanks for sharing!! - great comment!
Lovely woodland painting! Love the colors and contrast. The mushrooms and chestnuts pop off the paper. I'm not a fan of bokeh--too arts and crafts for me--but you made it work. Have a great week.
Thanks so much! 😊
Oh, what a wonderfully beautiful motif this is again. I can't put into words how happy I am again and again. Thank you very much for this wonderful picture, dear Paul.
Wow, thank you!
As always...beautiful!!
Thank you! Cheers!
😂Paul, I thoroughly enjoyed your mushroom painting! Magical atmospherical effects, amazing colours and textures and composition.🫠❤
Thank you so much 😀
Always love listening to the music 🎶 you have got going in the background. 🎨💕
Thanks Colleen - oh, yes I remember Clackers - all the rage here about the mid-70's - also very dangerous!
Yes played conkers. Loved collecting them and sorting out the champions. Love the Autumn vibe Paul.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love your painting!! But all those paintings at the end!! Wow. Shows the limitless of creativity!
Thank you so much 😀
Magical painting 😊
many thanks!
Love your painting! I am anxious to try bokeh!
You should!
Very interesting lesson. Ukraine is grateful!
Our pleasure!
Beautiful! Thank you for the inspiration to pull out my brushes again.
You are so welcome!
Thank you for this exercise and thanks to the Facebook group and Margot for the wonderful paintings - each one unique in their own interpretation!! Will give this a go - currently working on the Sussex House!! As always - learn so much!! :0)
Thank you too!
Such an outstanding painting with natural colors. Thanks for this great work of art with the great techniques to go with it. The places you showed are lovely as well.
Thank you so much 😀
Thank you very much :)
You're welcome!
Sounds great! - thanks for sharing!
I loved it as I do mushrooms. I think they are gorgeous. I love the whole painting, the colors are awesome and the artwork is magnificent. And I have never heard of that game.
Thank you so much!
This is so very pretty, many thanks Paul!! 🎨🖌️
Thank you so much 😀
Wonderful tutorial. We collected the chestnuts but did not play conkers here in Ontario.
Thanks for sharing!
This tutorial was of extreme interest, as I have been commissioned to illustrate 15 pages of a woodland scene, including a fairy ring. I love your work.
Glad it was helpful!
Beautiful painting Paul , loved all the effects you have shown. And the bokeh effect made it so whimsical. Will have to try that one. The way you make your colors come together is truly amazing. 💗
The trip for next year sounds lovely. Will have to give it some thought.
Never played Conkers 😊 though have read about it ..
Thank-you again for making our day with your beautiful tutorials that set our minds going 🎉🎉🎉
Take care 💖
Pleasure as always - thanks Sonia - perhaps we'll arrange a conker championship at the retreat!!!
I just love you and your videos...they almost always excited me and interest me...
Wow, thank you!
