To be honest, Dishonored is more similar to Deus Ex more than Thief, since in Thief you get no innate abilities and have to really conserve supplies, while in Deus Ex and Dishonored you have lots of innate abilities and you don't have to conserve supplies as much.
You know, usually i try to make a schmucky comment on your video, but tonight...nah i got nothing, i'm just happy your reviewing awesome games. GG Gman GG!
2SSSR2 I tried doing a playthrough without harming anyone and only using Blink and sleep darts. Still haven't finished it, as the game becomes really hard when playing this way.
2SSSR2 I think you can get the good ending even if you kill a few people. I managed to avoid killing all but one or two enemies per level (with the exception of the final mission, where killing enemies doesn't count towards the ending), and still got that ending.
Irondrone4 as long as you dont kill more than %20 of total population you get low chaos ending . Also game becomes pretty easy when you watch and learn npc movements. Finished the game first time with clean hands and undetected achievement on hard difficulty . Second time on very hard high chaos . If you are aimed to do low chaos undetected . You only need to upgrade blink and agility, slow time too if you want more control but its up to you , in the end though Daud has better abilities than Corvo . Improved blink , tethering ( aka Pull ), stun mine makes Daud a better low chaos character .
this is honestly my favorite first person game of the 2010s definitely, it kind of encompasses a rare genre of simply "first person action adventure" which is a large part of why i like it so much. It's just too short honestly, number 1 complaint.
I like to think of Dishonored more as Deus Ex than a stealth game. Sure, stealth makes life easy if you can pull it off, but you're not up shit creek if you get caught. I do agree the powers can be too powerful (granted they are fun to use). I hope No.2 tones down some of the powers down so you're not an unstoppable killing machine.
Major Fret Human Revolution is easier than Dishonored when doing Pacifist run, because it has frontal non-lethal takedowns. Also, I was able to avoid conflicts in many cases just by talking my way in.
Reloaded2111 That is true, but the general feel of the combat of the game felt more like a Deus Ex style game with exploration and choice in combat. Speech wasn't a priority in Dishonored like HR but I feel that suits the story. Corvo couldn't afford to be talking to everyone he met. Admittedly the pacifism felt shoe-horned in. I kinda felt it didn't suit the game and some of the less lethal options for the main targets is to just get them to leave Dunwall and never be seen again seems risky for Corvo. I could understand knocking out guards if you're into the whole 'they're just following orders' thing, but I think the player should have been forced to get his hands bloody, but I guess that's me being a violent person >:)
Great game. Does need two things: 1) New game plus or some other way to replay old levels with all your new shiiiit. 2) Some mode to encourage you to replay with lethal combat rather than stealth, rather than making you feel like a dick for using the weapons they give you.
Minor spoiler: If you give high overseer Campbell the heretics brand, you find him as a weeper later on in the flooded district. I thought that little detail was cool.
One of my top ten favorite games. I'm a little disappointed you didn't go more in depth about the dlc's or the lore of the game but great review as always.
Dishonored is a 10/10 game in my opinion. I love it because there are a lot of details in each mission, tons of ways to play the game, wide variety of abilities and weapons to use. And the story is interesting because the outcome depends on your actions.
Dishonored is an amazing game. The stealth is actually one of the best systems I've ever had the pleasure of playing. The Shadows only prevent enemies from detecting you at a distance, and blink actually doesn't teleport you, it moves you extremely fast. Enemies can still see what direction your heading unless your in the dark. It's an extremely well done game over all
A couple things about the game; According to a loading screen hint shadows will really only hide you when you're far away from enemies. Once you get up close it's all line of sight. I was also unsure about this for a while. And the reason the outsider grants people powers is because he's a bored omnipotent god and he wants to see what happens. It's a game to him.
great review, as always. I would recommennd you to take a look at a very obscure russian game called pathologic. It is one of the most underrated fps games of 2000s. not sure if you would like but still worth spending a few hours. I can't find a satisfactory review for that game on youtube
Fantastic game and I'm very excited for the sequel! I've finished Dishonored without being spotted, killing no one and It was the best stealth experience I had since Thief II: The Metal Age.
Gggmanlives Great review man !!. Absolutely love this game. I'm glad that you like it. Btw, just a quick question. Will you consider reviewing other types of games rather than just FPS in the future ?
I've never played Thief, so I can't say anything about the similarities and such. But here it goes: Personally, I've found that as I've continued to replay the game a few times, I've grown to resent it. Depending on your playing style (especially for achievements like clean hands, or collecting ALL THE THINGS) you either fly through the levels like nothing on any difficulty or you can just sit there, looking for everything. As for the plot, I find the actually dishonoring ridiculous as well, and then after the exposition, it seems kinda flat to me. I also wish there was more incentive for the Outsider to grant Corvo powers. It really seems like the Outsider gave Daud and Corvo powers for his personal amusement. I really love the art-style; it's very distinct and unlike many other modern games. I would like to see the textures a bit smoother; but as I've said, I found it very refreshing. Overall I enjoyed the game a fair bit. I'd give it a 7/10.
Ummm excuse me, but the Outsider actually did that for his amusement(sort of). The Outsider is a neutral being and he even says that and also mentions that he has "great interest; you fascinate me; I expect a great show;" etc(depending on your actions) so yeah, he gave them the mark because of their role and circumstances on the events of Dunwall, but it is also to test them and see how they(Daud, Corvo) use their powers and how the events unfold by the usage of said powers.
If anyone is on the fence with this one, now's the time. It's only $4.99 on the Steam summer sale right now. The entire bundle with all DLC included with the main game is only $10. Even if it is not a perfect game, definitely worth it at that price.
The light and shadows don't actually affect your visibility in Dishonored so it's all based on line of sight and distance to the enemy which kind of sucks. Also I found that you can be leaning out from behind a corner in plain sight of a guard but because your body is not visible to them, you aren't.
I actually liked how Emily (the princess?) talked. Then again, I liked every thing and aspect about this game, except for how easily you could sometimes wipe out everyone. I would have preferred it to be a little bit more difficult. When the news about Dishonored 2 came out, *I was so happy*.
I'm a big fan of your reviews and your taste. I noticed that you really like hardcore shooters and I want to recommend you Vanquish. It's a third person shooter, but kicks so much ass. It's been out for PS3 and Xbox for some time now.
Hardest part of this game was trying to Ghost it. The section towards the end was a pain trying to not be spotted once. It was still pretty rewarding though, first game I ever did a Ghost run through on.
Gggmanlives Considering that you like the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, have you played Metro 2033 and its sequel Last Light? Any chance you'll review those two games? Regardless, keep up the good work, Gman.
Just a stealth aficionado's opinion, 2012 was a crap year for games, but Dishonored is a treasure and I have replayed it a few times with different styles and different spell upgrades. Viktor Antonov's (of Half Life 2 fame and glory) influence can be seen in the City17-esque look of Dunwall. The Tallboys (reminiscent of Half Life 2's striders) were a truly scary foe for the first go-round, but it is very gratifying to get the jump on them and stick them with your sword.
The stealth is just based on whether you're within a guard's field of view or not. Apparently the developers considered Thiefy light/ shadow-based stealth but ended up thinking it was too silly that you could be 5 feet away from a guard but completely invisible. I don't know if the base game's difficulties affect guard vision, but in the Daud DLC the highest difficulty significantly increases the guards' vision. It's pretty jarring having enemies who can see more than 10-20 feet in front of them.
Ok, here is what I don't understand. As someone who has played the game time and time again, using multiple play stiles and unlocking some of the hardest achievements in the game I have always failed to see why some people see this as a stealth game. Just look at the upgrades/spells you get: there are 4 spells which fit in both 'ghost' and 'fighter' play stile (Blink, slow time, Possession, Agility), you then have 4 which fit in the 'fighter' play style (Bloodthirsty, Vitality, Devouring Swarm, windblast), and then you have a whopping 2! in the 'Ghost' play style, 2! (Darkvision, Shadow Kill)!!!!!!!! That coupled with the just plain bad stealth of the game. It just has last gen line of sight pseudo-stealth. Right so they can see me if I'm in complete shadows at the corner of a dark room but I am able to JUMP BEHIND SOMEONE on a MARBLE FLOOR and they don't even question it and everyone views that as remarkable stealth game play!?!?!?!?!? Stealth games do not have a 'Stealth Mode'! That's what separates Thief from Oblivion. Don't get me wrong, it's a fun and enjoyably game it's just not a stealth game.
This game was what made me play Dark Messiah, and the meele combat on Dishonoured was almost fully ripped from Dark Messiah and for good reason too, its the best first person meele yet in a game.
Gggmanlives Which is better is arguable, I too lean towards Dark Messiah being better due to it being a physics playground, regardless both these games still has the best first person meele in a game from what I know.
I agree with all the flaws about the stealth. I'd say the combat in the game is much more satisfying than the stealth, but not on the level Arcane's previous work, Dark Messiah. I'd prefer that game to get a sequel than Dishonored.
Dishonored is one of the best games ever made in my opinion. Also the fact that he was setup for killing the empress is the reason the game is called "Dishonored".
Dishonored is put together so well, with great combat and the amount of variety in how you choose to take on your mission and with great level design for parkour moments, enjoyable game. Arcane at its best
BTW, does anyone have an opinion of Dunwall City Trials? The Knife of Dunwall and The Brigmore Witches were excellent DLCs, IMHO, despite the absence of Tallboys.
Holy shit, i didn't know Arkane was made up of older Thief games! i remember renting this and the newer self-titled Thief game and being like "Why does Dishonored feel more like Thief than this new Thief game???" lol Thanks ggman, you fucking rock!
Was a good game, mechanically, and the atmosphere was pretty rich at times, reminded me of Pathologic a lot. But those characters and story, dear god. I don't remember any other story-driven game where I cared about the fate of characters less than in Dishonored.
This reminds me in many ways of 'Styx: Master of Shadows', though it would be Styx that's inspired by Dishonored and not the other way around. You can buy Dishonored with all the DLC for 25 Euro on Steam - at least until Feb. 12. (2016, 6hat is).
I still love Dishonored, but having sunk a ridiculous amount of hours into replaying it different ways, taking different routes and finding things I'd previously missed, I admit it has it's problems, but they're not the problems I generally hear people talking about. A main one for me is inconsistencies in the games world logic. One example: You are told that the more dead bodies there are, the rats will come, the more the plague spreads, the more weepers are created, so I thought, if I used shadow kill which dissolves the bodies into ash, there's no body to worry about, hence less rats, less plague, less weepers, but the game doesn't seem to take the absence of bodies into account. I played through the whole game being stealthy as fuck and shadow killing everyone and still got the bad ending. It's not so much the actual end I'm talking about it's more to do with what certain characters say and do, even though they'd have no way of knowing what an asshole I'd been. Also, the main game lied to me about how visible I was to enemies. In the main game I could hide under a table and no-one would see me. I hide under a table in one of the DLC's and as soon as a guy walks passed he comes straight for me. I was like "Fuck you, Dishonored told me this was okay!"
I'm a huge Splinter Cell fan and one of the more recent stealth games I really loved was Styx: Master of Shadows. The lack of indication really put me off of the game at the first try. Trying Dishonored was annoying to me for that reason alone. A normal player might enjoy the combat alternative if he's spotted, but I prefer to know once I'm noticed why is that happening. That, combined with the fact that it is an FPS stealth game (which also put me off of Thief years ago) makes for a really confusing stealth experience. I've always thought that what lies at the core of a great stealth game is being able to see. FPS already narrows your line of sight, but the fact that there is no way for the game to tell you what you're doing wrong when you're detected is a huge turn off for me. I really want to try it and I want to enjoy the voice over by Susan Sarandon, John Slattery and Michael Madsen, but I don't know if I want to have the same disappointment with it. Thanks for making the video, I guess I will see if I have another crack at it.
I got this back around August time in 2013 or 2014 when it was on free weekend sale and I loved it, I was glad it was on sale because I missed it on Xbox monthly games
Its one of those games I didn't finish. But I come back to it every couple of months. I do this for TimeShift. Dead to rights 3. Although I'm pretty far in Timeshift
It's weird that you say that Chloë Grace Moretz performance was "hands down the worst", and yet critics praised her performance and she even was nominated for an award for her voice work in this game.
I think he's right. The whole cast of dishonored are like robot. Go there, kill that guy. Oh sorry, i know you just got back from a suicidal mission but now we need you to go on another suicidal mission. Even the guard is program like robot, we're the bad guy, we kill people. And holy fuck, even Daud, the guy who kill the empress, was a boring piece of shit: "Oh i'm sorry that i kill empress. You're so strong that you can kill me with your fully upgraded pistol. With only 4 shot to my freaking face! Pleas don't kill me, i beg you. I just realize that i'm a very horrible person. Maybe because of the bullets in my brain that have make me understand now. I will become a good person from now on." Or you can just steal his pouch and then run away like a bitch.
Gariel Martir Because I'm an idiot who enjoys collecting achievements and trophies hehe. And I really, really like the game. Also, I kinda want to encourage devs to make more games like this. =)
I've never played this game but your comment has finally made me decide to buy it on Steam. For someone to have played this game as many times as you have, this must be a hell of a game!
Great review! So, is there any chance of reviewing GameCube/Wii FPS-es? For example Geist, Metroid Prime Trilogy and Red Steel 2 (first one is very bad game, but the second is awesome)... Conduit 1 & 2 are also bad games ...
I really want to get into this game but the sneaking feels so broken. If Gman here tells me to keep at it and beat it I'll re-download it on Steam and play it again.
***** Sleeper darts aren't an instant knockout in combat. Also I don't think I needed to really mention that you can possess fish, I doubt that would seal the deal for people considering buying the game.
The love letter to the stealth genre and the thief games. Followed by Prey which is for the (Idk what to call it, Survival horror-ish genre) love letter to system-shock and bioshock.
You can clearly see the map art designer for Half Life 2 played a huge role in bringing this world to life. Wish he got more credit
Yeah. The metal barriers and the tall boys looks like something directly from Half Life 2
Even the Outsider always gave me a huge gman vibe. Especially in the first one where his motives were vague for giving both us and Daud the nark.
To be honest, Dishonored is more similar to Deus Ex more than Thief, since in Thief you get no innate abilities and have to really conserve supplies, while in Deus Ex and Dishonored you have lots of innate abilities and you don't have to conserve supplies as much.
Nathanael Eugene That's because the main level designer of Deus ex 1 worked on this. I think he was the director?
This game is one of my favorite games ever, and one of my favorite stealth games of all time. Such an amazing game. I hope the sequel tops this.

This game is the best stealth game i've ever played. The replayability value is huge because you can play it so much differently every time
Thief series? Spinter cell series? Hitman series?
Metal gear solid series? Rocksteady's batman game series?
Deus Ex series?
Minh Duc Nguyen never played them, i'm ashamed.
Minh Duc Nguyen omg the Arkham games? You're a funny guy
So... who else finished this game with 0 kills?
Also liked the good ending you get with that.

One of my favorite stealth games of all time.
great level design and pretty original artstyle i love this game i wish more fps games were like this

Dan Ross dishonored 2 gameplay videos look amazing aswell

One of my top ten favorite games. I'm a little disappointed you didn't go more in depth about the dlc's or the lore of the game but great review as always.
Blake Bailey People get upset when I talk about the plot too much. And I don't want to ruin the DLC.
Gggmanlives Sure thing!
Blake Bailey DLC's of this game are quite good since you can play as Daud.
gast128 I agree, they're as good as, if not better than, the base game.
Hey Gggmanlives, any chance of you reviewing [insert game here]?

Truly my favorite game in the last 5-6 years if not more.
Dishonored is a 10/10 game in my opinion. I love it because there are a lot of details in each mission, tons of ways to play the game, wide variety of abilities and weapons to use. And the story is interesting because the outcome depends on your actions.
I was just going to ask you to review Dishonored! Good job staying ahead of the game good sir!!!
I always thought blink was so satisfying to use in this game, I don't know of any other games that have a teleport ability that feels so good.
Shall we gather for whiskey and cigars tonight?
indeed, I believe so
Main game + DLCs = 40 hours for me on first play-trough

I really just wanted to hear what you thought about this game for some time now
At first i thought this game was mediocre but on my 2nd play through doing stealth and non lethal I was surprised how every level changed
The Outsider was quite underused. With a little bit more depth in storyline the whole setting would have profited really well.

Prey and dishonored 1 was peak arcane
@@mayonnaise3959 oh yeah Prey is an Arcane gem
This is a great game... Love it... Thks dude for review
BTW, does anyone have an opinion of Dunwall City Trials? The Knife of Dunwall and The Brigmore Witches were excellent DLCs, IMHO, despite the absence of Tallboys.
Cant wait for dishonored 2 in spring next year!
Ever play Timeshift? That would be an interesting one
Great Video Dude
This game reminds me so much of Mistborn. It feels as if the developers were inspired by the books.
the walkers are not robotic. they are humans
Holy shit, i didn't know Arkane was made up of older Thief games! i remember renting this and the newer self-titled Thief game and being like "Why does Dishonored feel more like Thief than this new Thief game???" lol Thanks ggman, you fucking rock!
Never really played Dishonored but it looks pretty good
Is there any possibility for you to review the Brigmore witches and knife of Dunwall dlcs?
Was a good game, mechanically, and the atmosphere was pretty rich at times, reminded me of Pathologic a lot. But those characters and story, dear god. I don't remember any other story-driven game where I cared about the fate of characters less than in Dishonored.
love this game, one of my favourite new IPs in a long while
This reminds me in many ways of 'Styx: Master of Shadows', though it would be Styx that's inspired by Dishonored and not the other way around.
You can buy Dishonored with all the DLC for 25 Euro on Steam - at least until Feb. 12. (2016, 6hat is).
very interested to hear your opinion on this, it is a major favorite of mine
i cant find a video of yours without saying "SHIIIEEET!!!"
They really need to remaster Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. Maybe also rework the combat if possible
oh man. i would buy the remaster version if done correctly. the game was amazing for its time. or perhaps a sequel
I still need to play this series.
Thanks for making the video, I guess I will see if I have another crack at it.
you do a review about bedlam?
I got this back around August time in 2013 or 2014 when it was on free weekend sale and I loved it, I was glad it was on sale because I missed it on Xbox monthly games
Great video keep it up :)
me:...replays a level 20+ times to finish a level in perfect stealth.
meanwhile Gman
i completed this game only using blink and the weapons. i didn't bother studying the other powers i found it much harder
This is the closest what we have to a God Simulator. And I fucking love it.
Banana Republic no the second game will be more you saw what are the power upgrades of corvo?
sure mate. Waiting for it :)
more like a creepy ghost simulator
I am just wondering but. Whow was he able to get nobles without their masks in the beginning of the video?
No real descerniable that the outsider does it, because every immortal character wants a specticle.
Its one of those games I didn't finish. But I come back to it every couple of months. I do this for TimeShift. Dead to rights 3. Although I'm pretty far in Timeshift
John Noble Timeshift is kind-of a short game anyway but it has pretty enjoyable combat. So keep playing it :)
I love this game so much. Maxed out the achievements and trophies on 360, PS3 & PS4 hehe. I think it's time for the Steam version next. =D
Hahaha why would you play the same game on different systems? Just curious
Gariel Martir Because I'm an idiot who enjoys collecting achievements and trophies hehe. And I really, really like the game. Also, I kinda want to encourage devs to make more games like this. =)
I've never played this game but your comment has finally made me decide to buy it on Steam. For someone to have played this game as many times as you have, this must be a hell of a game!
this game was AMAZING
Definitely an instant favorite, though I'm not sure I want to play it again.
Great review! So, is there any chance of reviewing GameCube/Wii FPS-es? For example Geist, Metroid Prime Trilogy and Red Steel 2 (first one is very bad game, but the second is awesome)... Conduit 1 & 2 are also bad games ...
Majmun X No Nintendo reviews planned in the near future.
I really want to get into this game but the sneaking feels so broken. If Gman here tells me to keep at it and beat it I'll re-download it on Steam and play it again.
can you do timeshift? plox
Yes.
Gggmanlives lol my friend bought me Timeshift for my birthday because of your review and i think it's rad, too! Thanks, dude!
You can also possess fish and sleeper darts instant knock out when shot anywhere on the body... Other than that, solid review :)
***** Sleeper darts aren't an instant knockout in combat. Also I don't think I needed to really mention that you can possess fish, I doubt that would seal the deal for people considering buying the game.
Gggmanlives Yeah they can if you find the blueprint to upgrade the darts to combat ones, and fish are cool :(
The love letter to the stealth genre and the thief games. Followed by Prey which is for the (Idk what to call it, Survival horror-ish genre) love letter to system-shock and bioshock.
Thodnern Prey is amazing!
