This episode should have been the biggest clue on Red John's age. He was bound to be 50+ considering these deaths. That should have narrowed the final list considerably.

Not necessarily 50+. That happened in 1988 and that episode came out in like 2012. Means that if Red John was 18 at that time for example he was 42 in 2012.

@@wittyroark I mean, it would make sense that you have to be older to be clever enough to do something like this, but it was not impossible that Red John started all this as a teenager. Maybe Jane suspected the older ones more but he could not ignore the younger people on his list either.

It's the first and only time, I think, that we viewers see the smiley face before Jane does. Generally we see the reaction on his face first, and only then the camera pans to reveal the symbol

There was always something so legitimately disturbing about the way the smile was 'drawn'. Like even if it wasn't in literal blood you could tell something was off,
