I love that bass line. It's so smooth. Alex's outro solo is one of my favorites. I don't know what it is exactly. Sure it kicks ass, but it's more. The fade out is like that of a warm 70s day fading into the night. I'd like to go back there.
He's right . When you're right , you're right !! It's true !! No rock collection can even be taken seriously if it does not include 2112 !! In fact if it lacks 2112 don't even bother mentioning it !!
I saw the original 2112 tour in 1976. First we saw them in Evansville, then we followed them to St. Louis just a few nights later. I saw them a 3rd time on the 2112 tour but I can't remember which city, perhaps Terre Haute or St. Louis a second time. We saw then every time they came anywhere near Southern Illinois. I think I've seen them 6 or 7 times over the years.
The images remind me of when Alex Lifeson wanted to drop out of school and play music. His parents were dead set against it but he convinced them that this is what makes him happy and what he wants to do for the rest of his life. I'm very glad he chose to stick to his guns and that his parents let go.
It was college. According to the video of him arguing with them in "Beyond the Lighted Stage" they made him finish high school, it was college he was argueing against , or as they called it "university" . " why should I waste all that time and money on University when I already know this is what I want to do and I'm going to do" I loved that line . I quote it often when the subject of college comes up lol
I really relate to this, I just quit high school to make music, I hope i'm gonna make music a living. I'd really like to meet Alex Lifeson too!!! (I live in Canada too so it could be possible)

Such an amazing song. “I will teach what I have been taught.” “You didn’t listen again.” It’s like the young musician is saying to his unsupportive parents, “you are not hearing how beautiful my talents are, but you will one day.” What a great message. ❤
Me and my friends would listen to this Album Day and Night back in the 70's and I still never get tired of these songs, many memories of good times and old forgotten friends .
This song still has a magical effect on me after all this time. We played this album endlessly, with our favorite chronic, in the 70's. A lot has changed since then, but you know....the more that things change the more they stay the same.
And the cool thing about it...is that side two had absolutely nothing to do with side one...but is still excellent! 2112 is not a concept album...only side one is....🎸😎🎸
Takes me back to 1975. Sitting in an older friend's 1964 Chevy Impala, his high school graduation tassel hanging from the rear view mirror. We're buttered on Mexican, singing full voiced with the RUSH 2112 tape (8 track) in a national forest park on the outskirts of Louisville Kentucky.
We loved this alblum, 2112... Somkin' funny cigarettes in my pal's black light room with the bad ass poster of Hemi Hendrix and The Guitars that Destroyed the World. Awesome!

Bad boy always dropping that ---- --------- your bed. I was in 3rd grade in 82 when I 1st heard this album on 8 track over my best friend's house whose older sister, 10 years older, was a Deadhead who loved Rush too. I was in 2112 that day and since then. Thank you Rush!
Every song that sang has a meaning in life, Something touched these guys when they were younger, The older they got there music got better & better, If it wasn't for Gene Simmons that promoted them in the 70's I don't think American people would of heard them like this, they were the back up band on tore for kiss, GOD BLESS you Gene Simmons for what he did for alot of bands to make them big
I wasn't around for the album release, but it was shown to me by my dad when I was 10-11 and the whole thing stuck with me. I listened to the whole album on repeat whenever I could. But my favorite part in the whole album was the 3 closed hihat back-beats in this song. In all my years as a musician and listener Ive never heard anything like that anywhere else.
a song so different from the others, and it fills my soul I love playing the guitar and these lyrics represent many things in my life related to music and it is incredible 😍 that's why I love this guitarist and I don't regret having met him, I hope one day I can know him but it is impossible because I am from Mexico haha, but there is no better lyric than this and no better interpreter than Alex himself. things as they are!

(this song's lyrics by Lifeson, btw) Agree with you all. As mentioned below, obviously the blond kid is supposed to be Alex, but if you look at the drawings at 1:15 and 2:17, here is what I see, in my humble opinion: the dad looks like Neil and in the Mom's hairstyle ... I see Geddy's hairstyle from the 70's. Also: above the kid's bed in bedroom frame is a picture of three men's chins, ostensibly the band as well.
Did Al really write the lyrics? The official Rush site says lyrics by Neil but I'd always heard this song was 100% Alex. I glanced at the other songs with lyrics by other band members ('Chemistry,' 'Cinderella Man,' 'Making Memories') and they have the writers listed. So, I dunno..
