    Nice. Check the bottom of the barrels. If they were originally intended as food grade they will be marked HDPE inside a triangle or a number 2 inside a triangle. Of course that does not eliminate concern what the secondary market user might have done with them.

      Appreciate your comments great wisdom. You never know what things were used for before. Maybe it's best to know your seller. In Honduras it's another thing. We were fortunate and got food grade barrels.

    interesting, I did mine different with grow beds that I cut the other way with bell siphons I also used chemical barrels and rinsed them out but I think I messed up. I may try building grow beds your way as I originally planned to do them like that just wasn't sure how to drain them. I'll check yours out more.

      I'm glad you are building an aquiponics system. It is a good way to conserve water while growing fish and plants. There are many ways to create a system this is just one. I'm glad you are using this design to build it. It is a good one. Of course, there are modifications that can be made in connecting the barrels together and also using a more sound base. This design has the nuts and bolts of having a successful system.

    Thank You for posting. I built 2 comparable units. I have to say ,I love them.
    I was looking for ,low maintenance , convenient ,large but low profile containers ,this build fit the bill.
    I am a little concerned about the water temps in summer , hoping the tanks being in the ground helps with this.
    Oh & I'm not in some far away land (where we can't get different things) ,I live in Michigan.
    I also used as much recycled stuff as I could find.

      Thomas, I just returned from a rebuild of the same system. We used the video to assist us in that build. Thank you for your kind words. As it relates to the water temperature in the summer while living in Michigan. I know it gets hot at times there, but having it in the ground will assist in that endeavor. My concern would be the winters. Depending on the type of fish you use will have much to say about success in the summer. Trout would have difficulty with warm water. Usually 65 degrees and below is a safe temperature for trout. Bass on the other hand can deal with the extremes better than most fish. Tilapia don't handle the cold very well. Warmer water can tend to spread diseases easier than colder waters. Living in Michigan, the winters will be a big problem with icing of the pipes and tank. Unless you have the system enclosed and the environment more controlled, there could be big problems. Let me know how you handle this issue.

      @@williamwagner Thank you for your reply. I am using then as hydroponics systems , instead of aquaponics. It'll only be running from beginning spring to end of fall so icing of pipes & such won't be a problem.
      As for temp of water ,yea I was hoping the same as you ,tank in the ground should help.
      To warm of water isn't good for roots. End up with root rot ,cridders ,bugs & just a whole lot of problems.
      I chose this system because I can use fish ,if I want & not change anything. Plus it's an easy way to time your watering schedule :)

      Thomas... my email is aslanlivez@msn.com. As it relates to water and winters... I grew up in New Jersey. I know how the winter can be. Just make sure that the pipes and fish tank are drained of any water. The pvc will shatter from the cold. The tank will crack as a result too. The idea of switching to hydroponics is a good idea. Then you don't have to concern yourself with 2 systems, but one.

      Here it is a yr later & I'm still impressed. You will have to tweak it , just like any system.
      I did have an algae prob last yr so this yr I'll put a cover over my top water barrel & a shade net over the open gutters. To keep sunlight & debris out.
      I got Massive root mass! I'm cleaning rock out for this yrs grow & the roots reach wall to wall!
      Again I'd recommend this system to anyone. Thanks again.

    those kind of barrel are not available in some other places, but i wanna build in inground with cement those are available in places like Asia,.. & more stronger to protect from strong winds & heavy rain, your video is an excellent resource plan i can follow especially the water cycle,..

In this year's visit to Honduras, we built a greenhouse around the aquaponics system. They receive extreme rains and winds at the site. We also placed a drainage system around the system.     thanks for this video. will gather resources and give it a try. And, can be as productive in tropical climates of Africa? like Western Kenya? And what plants do you now grow on the gravel?

      Hello Kevin... The system you have been watching was built in Honduras. It is a very tropical environment. Very humid and plenty of rain. This system was built in 2016. We suffered a failed base due to extreme rains and also crop failure due to harsh winds. To compensate for this, we decided to build a greenhouse over the system and install a drainage system this year (2018). In doing so, we have given the system a controlled environment allowing the system a chance to do what it was built for: growing plants. We now control the PH levels more effectively which the plants like. The rain played havoc with them. The gravel has been a good media for plant growth and allows the "flood and drain system" to operate well. Most any type of plant can grow in it. Don, grows lettuce and tomatoes in his system without any problems. The greenhouse will help control insect issues also. We have seen people grow squash and even a mango tree (of course it had to be supported with ropes, but it was growing and producing fruit). If the plant can grow in the environment it is planted in, the gravel will work fine. For further videos on aquaponics, we have posted a few.     I really like all it's process but you didn't show us how did you filter the fish water at last?

      Thank you for the question. It is a very good one. It addresses one of the vital importance along with water usage. Briefly, the water that is pumped up from the fish tank into the dump tank is released into the grow beds after it reaches the to of the U-siphon in the dump tank. The water is released into each of the grow beds where the water fills each of the grow beds to within an inch of the top of the media in each of the grow beds. The water then drains down through the bottom drain and returns back to the fish tank. While the water drains down through the small rock media in the grow bed, the water is filtered. A further explanation of this is found in one of our videos called The Key Points of the Water Flow in an Aquaponics System.     Nice video. I want to build a same one in my home. Why most of the people making aquaponic system in a closed room? But you make in open area . Why?

      That is where we had to build it. It was built in Yamaranguila, Honduras. There are systems that are built inside, but they are usually on a small scale. This system was built where it was to allow the 12 missionaries to learn how to build a system or refine their skills in building one. The process was done this way so each of the missionaries could return to the people they serve and build their own for the sake of the communities and people they serve. Smaller systems can be done for inside depending the amount of room available. There are several other videos related to this one.       Just got back from Honduras where the purpose of my trip was in rebuilding the system again. The missionaries had to move unexpectedly and had a short time to dismantle everything. We used local help to level the ground and prepare it for the system. We are going to place a greenhouse over it to ensure water pH and nitrate levels. It'll also give the missionaries a good working area that is protected. Just to make it clear. The system is outdoors due to the size of the system and what we have available in space inside and resources to build with. Most all the systems I have seen that are built inside are small due to the limited space available. Though, there are commercial systems that are built in large warehouses.

    The only question I have is how much fish should I use for a system
    And how do I determine it?

      One fish per 5 gallons is a safe number, but you should plan for the fish to grow, so maybe one fish for every 6 gallons, but you will have to harvest the fish eventually due to their demand on the oxygen in the water. You can replenish the harvested fish with smaller ones. Remember to check on your pH levels and Nitrite/ Nitrate levels in the water. There needs to be a balance between both. The fish have problems when the Nitrite/ Nitrate levels are too high, and the plants have a problem if they are too low. The same would be true if the pH levels are off for the fish and plants alike.

      I think it'll be better to start out with some spinach
      A small setup of 500 litre tank and no filtration and maybe a 24 watt motor for pumping water
      Are there any multimeters to measure ammonia, nitrate and nitrile levels?

      ​@@k3kr You will want to change the size of your fish tank water volume at least once per hour, so you would need 500 liter per hour pump (with enough head pressure to work with your plumbing). It is better to oversize your pump some to be on the safe side. Your choice of fish and greens will work fine.
      You can test the water with an API freshwater test kit. You need to tract the development of bacteria in your system to know how the system is functioning.

      Thanks for your question. Being able to use a metal frame would be stronger I suppose. We were in Honduras during this build and using the available resources was key. Metal is very expensive there. After rainy season began, there were some difficulty with the foundation collapsing. Though this was bad, we came up with a better design when rebuilding the system. You can see the rebuild of this system after it was dismantled and rebuilt at a different location. We also have several other videos on my channel. William Wagner.       Yes, this system would work in Africa. In fact, Don will be going to Northern Uganda in November to install a system and provide teaching. Don and I have finished the extended project.       That's what we use but other sizes could be used probably smaller ones would work as well depending on the size of the IBC tank/ other container for fish tank volume... You want the fish tank volume to turn over a minimum of once per hour, twice per hour would be better.

      Is it ok to used 880 GPH pump? Or lower than 680gph?

      Depending on the size of your system. The 680 worked well for us. The 880gph would work well too. The issues involved will be trying to recycle your water every 45 minutes to an hour. Also considering how far the water needs to travel and restrictions the water needs to travel through: distance and bends.

      You are right. There are a good number of people working on this project. The purpose of the building of the system was use the building of the system to either in to reinforce skills the person had or to introduce those new skills and have everyone to support each other in this building process.     Thanks for the video content! Excuse me for chiming in, I would love your initial thoughts. Have you ever tried - Patlarny Gardening Expert Principle (erm, check it on google should be there)? It is an awesome exclusive product for learning how to expand your produce with the clever art of aquaponics without the headache. Ive heard some awesome things about it and my friend after a lifetime of fighting got great results with it.

      I read the advertisement. Yes, aquaponics is a great way to grow plants without the headaches that were pointed out in the link advertisement you listed. Don has his own system and directs builds here in the US and in other countries (Haiti and Honduras) to mention a few. The results are amazing. My part in the process of putting out there a video build of a system to demonstrate a process of building an aquaponics system that will assist anyone in producing growing plants using the nutrient rich waste material from fish. If you watch our A Real Time View of an Aquaponics System Build, you will see the build in a modular way, not a step by step basis, of a build.At the end of the video, you will discover a website link to attain a materials list we used in the build for free.     Oh..... shit .... the fish tank water is so so dirty 😂😂😂😂😂
    And there is no external filter for the fish tank 😂😂😂😂😂
    And the whole growth bed is fail , spending the large area to build it .
    Using PVC triangle vertical stand will make more production , instead of ‘ this stupid growth bed ‘wasting money to buy stupid gravel 😂😂😂😂😂

      I will try to address your questions and comments regarding this system. First concerning the fish tank water. The water was dirty due to the fish were introduced into a new environment. We transported the fish in the pond water we took them out of. In introducing them to a foreign water source, we mixed the different sources to ensure the fish would be able to handle the transition. Second, there is no need for an external filtration system. The gravel in the grow beds will filter the water and return the water clean to the fish tank. The grow bed in this system is actually very good. It uses up a small amount of water compared to other systems. As it relates to a vertical stand you mentioned, you can not compare the two systems. They both serve a different purpose. I have seen the vertical system do excellent, but it requires a completely different set of material and requirements of monitoring. Any system has its benefits and drawbacks. They are not good or bad, smart or dumb. They are just different.
