You can put it on a timer and shut it off at night, but we kept ours running all day. Make sure you keep the water oxygenated during the night for your fish by using an aerator.
hi, i have watched your videos several times. they are great. i have never been able to visit your site however to have a copy of the book. it just does not open up. is there any way i can get a copy of the book or onto your website? thank you
I am looking at going and setting some like this up the only problem I have is where I am off to has little electricity and lots of brounouts so I am looking no pumps I could use a hand with that issue
I don't see why not, but you my have issues to plumb it. The system water flows by gravitation. Also, having them up waist high is nice for planting or harvesting.
Yes, you can use your grow beds to do that. A biofilter is a place for beneficial bacteria to grow. A biofilter is cheap to build, why not do so? Also, I do everything I can to prevent any fish fecal matter from getting into the grow beds. For my systems and with tilapia, max is 64 tilapia in each IBC tank.
For tilapia in my systems, I calculate for a 1 lb fish for every 4 gallons of water. The IBC tote will have approximately 250 gallons of water. All fish species have different stocking density and water quality tolerance.
You go to great lengths to use Ibc totes but for the grow beds would it not be easier to build two big grow beds and only 2 bell siphons less pipe and fittings
Hi Shawn, I'm looking at setting up a Aquaponic commercial farm, is there a way where we can pay to set it up? Looking at running the farm on solar as well.

You would have to build your grow beds up higher and make your sump more shallow. I would avoid bell siphons because they make the water go up and down dramatically. You would need to go with the constant flood method and consider a ball float valve in the sump to ensure proper water level at all times. Make sure you check out my Ebook at www.morningstaraquaponics.com
robbycast You can still use grow beds with flood & drain if you put the sump (as big as you possibly can do) on the ground and pump water from there to the second sump (full size) also above ground. You than put a sensor/switch (like in the toilet) that activate the pump when water level is high, and stops when water level is low. This does not interfere with the rest of the system due to that water is pumped up from the sump. It can therefore be placed practically where ever you want as long as it is under the grow beds and under the fish tank. Cheers mate

Glad you enjoyed it!
GREAT VIDEO REGARDING AQUAPONICS GARDENING. WELL THANK YOU!!
Thanks for watching!
You did great job Shawn. I been watching almost most of your videos. well done :)
Thank you!
Just decided to start aquaponics in the past month
That's awesome and wish you the best!
Thanks for sharing
My pleasure
Great video you wouldn't know if I can get the ibc contained ers in the philippines plan on building g them there.
I don't see why you couldn't. I have students in the Philippines and they used IBC totes.
What are those stands you put the tanks on and where can I get those?
We built them ourselves. The schematics and how to make them are in our instructional manual.
Wow amazing
Thanks

How many hours per day should the grow bed be irrigated in an aquaponics system?
You can put it on a timer and shut it off at night, but we kept ours running all day. Make sure you keep the water oxygenated during the night for your fish by using an aerator.
Thank you for watching my video! Check out my other videos as well! Please feel free to ask me any questions!

Having electrical issues will be extremely difficult to run a system. You will need to look into an alternate source such as solar or wind.
Hi. Real nice job. I have a question for you. Do you do the tilapias reversal stuff?
Thank you
Years ago, we tried it. No, not at this time.
Do the grow tanks have to be lifted or can I put them on the floor

Hi
May i know why are you adding biofilter in spite of you have grow bed? What is the maximum stocking density you are advising?

Sure, but you have to build according to the materials that are available to you. I live in Honduras, we are limit to what we have.

Sorry, I don't work on commercial projects.
spray paint would be as good vinyl paint no? as long as its water-based?
i'm currently ordering paint
Spraying is a way of applying the paint. I don't see an issue with it as long as you don't get it inside the system. I prefer water based myself.
OK
Cheers Paul :)

which would be the price of one of these systems?
With a shade cloth looped greenhouse house, I would say around $4500 to $5200. This all depends on your country and where you source your materials.

Just the system itself, around $1500 USD
Our ground is bedrock. Tskes dynamite to make a hole. Suggestions??
If you have that firm of a bedrock, I assume you have a solid base. Dig down as far as you can and pour a concrete pad for each leg.

Why didn't you clean the bur's off the grow beds before painting? Won't they get in the water?
Honestly, don't exactly remember the fine details of that build, but I would assume that we did.
Looks great ans all. But nit everyone has the funds to work on such a project like this one
Very true! But many do as well.
How many fish can you keep in the whole system?
In this particular system, with tilapia, up to 110 (plus or minus).
What can I do for a sump if I cannot dig thru dirt? My backyard is completely cemented. Thnx
