Esteban Ocon is a French Formula 1 driver racing for the Alpine F1 Team, and is regarded as one of the most talented on the current grid. In this episode, Esteban shares the reality of racing from a young age and the astonishing sacrifices his family chose to make to support his dream.
Esteban reveals the pressure he was under throughout his youth and how his childhood was vastly different to his peers. His parents decided to sell their home and working garage to finance his career, in order to chase his dream of racing in Formula 1. He shares the impact this has had on him as an adult and the immense gratitude he has towards his parents today.
Reflecting on his rise through the ranks, Esteban opens up about the scrutiny and criticism he faced as a young driver. Rather than letting this impact him, he shares with Jake and Damian how he used this as motivation, transforming the negative feedback into inspiration. They discuss his 2019 hiatus from Formula 1 and the invaluable lessons he learnt during this time, observing the workings of the Mercedes team from the sidelines.
This episode is a deep dive into what achieving your dreams looks like, exploring teamwork, self-belief and why trust is so crucial.

Both Ocon and George have the no hold bars, gutsy way of racing and approach of not taking nothing for granted. Grateful, I guess as both their journeys to F1 were not easy. Toto, Gwen and Merc contributed to them making it from the Junior Categories. They both unfortunately are misunderstood by many. Lovely lads. I wonder if Toto would not put them together for 2 seasons and see. I like that fight for every point and fear no one. They both know Mercedes ways well and been exposed to Lewis and Team during their glory days being at the back of the Garage and debriefs. They both know how to get the most of difficult cars and how to lead a Team during those difficult times. And they both have great relationship with Toto and loyal to him. Both sets of parents are humble and are behind the scenes.

From the perspective of the same team, Russell has not been known to be as toxic as Ocon. At least, Russell hasn't done an "Ocon" to his teammates. Oh well, maybe he did behind the scene, I don't know.

I kinda see it as a similar reason as to why people don't like Shaun White. Shaun and Ocon's mistreatment in the past really did make them rise and excel at their respective talent but at the cost of having to adopt an overly powerful fight instict that neither could control well. Esteban has carried that chip on his shoulder to this day and has repeatedly let it get the best of him, and he is never able to be the bigger man. Like compare his actions to Lewis, who didn't have monetary struggles but had discrimination to fight through to get where he is, yet he is able to rise above it and be very stoic on the matter, standing up for himself when appropriate and not looking for aggressions when they aren't there, which Ocon is unable to do. This is personally why I don't like him, and I will admit it's quite a subtle thing that's not surface level at all, but this might explain in better detail other than "he crashing into teammates every weekend".

This is going to be long.
I love this interview and how it provides so much insight to Esteban's career and how he (and his family) dealt with the cards given to him (them). I am his fan and will always remain so.
I know most say that sacrifice is the defining factor of Esteban's career and life in general but I think determination and self-belief are up there too. The determination and mental strength he had and still has, is truly remarkable considering that life just seems to throw all kinds of set backs and obstacles at him. From a financially unstable karting and junior single seater career, from being in two teams that were hit by financial troubles, one of which actually leaving the sport (Manor), from having to take a year out from racing for reasons not within his control, and now in Renault/Alpine which has always struggled to get a hold of proper management until now. He definitely has had such a tumultuous career so far. But I know he is so much stronger because of it. The way he choose to see the silver lining in his situation, specifically during his 2019 hiatus, is inspirational.
The way he describes the type of racing that he likes made me remember this comment I saw on reddit, and to which I agree with it, "Esteban does the type of driving/racing people say they want but from a driver they don't want it from". To me this speaks volumes on how hypocritical the f1 fanbase is in their treatment and opinions on Esteban. He races hard but clean (of course with some incidents which is typical in racing). But people are so wrapped up in their bias and made-up narratives against him that they are no longer objective when they watch him race, if they even pay attention to him during race weekends.
Another thing I want to add: Esteban basically debunked the narrative that he doesn't get along with his teammates but watch people spin what he said to fit their narrative. Only reason people think he is a "bad teammate" is simply because he actually chooses to challenge his teammates, who unfortunately for Esteban, happen to have much larger fanbases then him and thus, have control of the narrative every time he clashes with them. But the revisionism of this clashes has been getting out of hand, note of all his crashes with his teammates, only one was his fault (and not even majorly so IMO). Perez was at fault for most of what happened in force india, Alonso was at fault in Brazil 2022 and he was actually penalized for it and Gasly was at fault in Australia 2023.
I'm going to just put what Alonso said after the Brazil GP 2022: “It has been two years [of racing] clean. Some first laps we had some fights, because we start always together, we qualify very close. So in two years, we had one contact. OK, people want to do a big thing about that. But we have one contact in two years and [on Sunday] we recover everything we did [in the Sprint]. So we try to do the best for the team.”

Definitely one of the most interesting and inspiring drivers of these times. So different in the positive sense of the word. He shows a mentally strong man when he recalls the injustice he has experienced and adopts an attitude intended to arouse pity and sympathy from the public. He has high values (respect for parents, free charity), but remains a realist. He is nice, polite and sincere, but at the same time completely no naive and knows when he has to take a tough attitude and defend what he and his family have gained (often confused with falsehood and toxicity). He understands F1 like no one else, realizing that nothing is certain in it. The bond with parents and the respect and care for them are also admirable. And the fact that he can remain himself in the world of flashy, conformist and manipulative social media. Not to mention this negative group of their users. A very tough man.

Fernando fans hate him because of Hungary 2022 and Max fans hate him because of Interlagos 2018.
Given these are 2 of the 3 biggest and loudest fanbases, that's already a ton of haters.
F1 being a fast growing sport, newer fans tend to love what's cool to love and to hate what's cool to hate, so that makes it even bigger.
And in the end, people juste like to have a villain to hate. And given current F1 grid doesn't have a true villain (like Mazepin was), people quickly made someone look way worse than he actually is, and given Esteban is clearly not the most skilled guy at PR in addition of already having a solid haterbase, he's an easy target.
That's a bit depressing because aside from great backstory, he has some flashy overtakes and some great defensive driving which is stuff everyone should love at an age full of DRS freebies and aside from Button he's the only teammate that didn't got utterly demolished by Alonso last 15 years.

Yes, it can be sad. But from the point of view of science and behavioral psychology, when you look at the behavior and language of those fans who hate him so much on social media, there is doubtful pleasure or pride in being the object of admiration of such people. From an ethical or axiological point of view, it is the reluctance of such people, it is even a compliment and proof that you are a decent and mentally tough person. It is doubtful whether Alonso himself is happy that the foundation of his fanbase consists of people creating disgusting content, swearing and often with disgusting profile photos. I suspect that when watching such comments, the Spaniard himself feels disgusted that he attracts such people (and he certainly browses them, because he admitted that he follows opinions about himself in the media). The only problem is that there are more such people in times when it is possible to vent anonymously on the Internet without consequences. Leclerc is not on verstappens level. He does not have the same level of consistency.
He is up against a robot. Max has moved the bar on what's needed now. This is no longer Schumacher Hamilton 10 wins a season, 5 win streaks territory anymore
He is a machine. If you ever watch football, this is akin to getting 95+ points in a season and still not winning the title.
Max is the final driver, the most complete

This was an amazing interview of Ocon. My thanks for your great questions. I’m surprised by the amount of hate he gets when he is clearly so polished and talented. He’s so well spoken and clearly so appreciative of his position and opportunity. His parents have clearly raised a solid young man who has overcome lots of adversity. For new American fans, his rags to riches story and persistence and ability to deliver are his superpowers. I am surprised his fan base isn’t larger except he has had to go up against some of the biggest names in racing and compete against their fan bases in Perez, Ricciardo and Alonso. I think he was clearly better than Perez, he handled Alonso over 2 years better than most and he took too much hatred over Brazil 20018 with Max. He doesn’t say it but I bet Mercedes was one of the seats in 2019. Lewis wanted no part of him as teammate when he had a lapdog in Bottas. Sainz took the McLaren seat from him last minute. If he only had a top car he would be a Hollywood movie ending.

You guys misunderstood it completely, acting here like he said that he shouldve been promoted to F1 instead of Max. Basically what he said is that from his pov(which is not wrong), its messed up that a champion in a series has to stop racing due to lack of money. The ladder is a mess, if you dont have money you are done. You say that ye but if you are good you can get into a program and they will finance it. Guess what, they partially do, but you still have to fork out the rest. Just look at Hauger (last year was in RB academy) his car was still full of sponsors. If you look at the indycar ladder, the champion automatically gets promoted and gets the money to fund his next season. This is something that the f1 ladder should introduce

What a shame that this very mentality has twisted his own fate in F1. I get it. Unlike certain drivers who have fathers who can buy entire teams for them, Ocon has always had to fight for his seat at the table.
Too bad he was never given an incentive to move beyond that mentality. Even when his seat for the following season was guaranteed, he still fought like everything was on the line for him and that finally caught up to him.

Lewis tbh isn’t even really at his level either (but had a brilliant spell from 2015 to 2020, albeit asked by Merc nailing the turbo-hybrid regs). Leclerc is someone who can touch that same horizon of extreme pace and performance, but he cannot do so at the same level of relentless consistency or ruthless efficiency. Alonso meanwhile doesn’t have the same raw pace of 10-15 years ago, but any deficiencies he lacks in outright pace he makes up with race-craft, cunning and elite racing IQ (and Sainz is another Alonso in the making in this regard).

Unfortunately not, many people believe Hamilton is overrated.
Btw, i still think Max was the better drive in 2021, he lost at least 43 points that season through no fault of his own, while Hamilton (except Baku) never payed for his mistake.

I'm honestly surprised that Esteban is still in F1. He has never beaten a teammate ever (2022 doesn't count and who would think that he's better than Alonso anyways lol), he had numerous accidents with his teammates due to his extraordinary aggressiveness - he's mediocre at best but he thinks he's a driving god. And I can't forget his smug smiling face after he casually knocked Max out from P1 in Brazil.

    • @GinoLaMainFroide

You have to choose a metric.
If you go by points, he beaten Fernando in 2022 (which shows it's a bad metric).
If you go by head to head finishes (which is not perfect but still more accurate than points), he beaten Perez in 2018 and Gasly in 2023 (each time he had a clear edge, but more DNFs).
When it comes to "numerous accidents", how many times was he at fault for an incident that knocked a teammate out of the race ?
I looked about it, that's one (Baku 2017). I'm sure half of the grid has a similar record.
And talking about the "mediocre at best", I think we all agree that the top 3 drivers on the grid are Lewis, Max and Fernando, after all they're the only WDCs still here.
Ocon is 21-23 in qualy and 17-17 in H2H race finishes against Alonso.
Russell was 20-24 in qualy and 16-21 in H2H race finishes against Hamilton at the end of 2023.
Albon is 1-25 in qualy and 2-16 in H2H race finishes against Max.
And I don't remember F1 fans calling Russell and Albon "mediocre at best".
Dislike him as much as you want, liking a personality is something subjective, to each its own.
But he has proven a lot more than drivers like Sargeant, Zhou, Magnussen, Stroll or Tsunoda when it comes to actual performance on track and he's not as washed as Bottas or Ricciardo are.

He made sure that they had a place to live and a secure existence. He provided resources for his father so that he could continue working as a mechanic. He bought him a letter of invitation to the workshop. He took his mother to the Cannes Film Festival last year because she had always dreamed about it (when athletes and celebrities take their partners). He praises his parents above all else. He calls his father the best mechanic, and considers his mother to be the greatest inspiration among the women he knows (last week he answered a question from a fan on Instagram who asked him about it).
