Thx both of you for the inspiring conversation! Again, I'm learning a lot here. Thanks to Kenny Washington for sharing all this insights. I can literally feel the dignity and passion in every word. Actually, Mel Lewis was the first real Jazz drummer I happened to met in person. At the time he used to work at the WDR Big Band in Cologne 2-3 times a year. A drummer from Hamburg, Udo Dahmen, told me to got there to hear Mel. Mr Lewis asked me to sit next to his Hi Hat. It has been an amazing experience. In the afternoon, he »ordered« me to his Hotel room, where he played all kinds of records for me from Cassette Tapes. The older I get, the more I become aware of how little I know. But I really didn't know anything about music / Jazz / Drums back then. Nevertheless, he was very kind and helpful, just because he sensed a sincere interest, I guess. That was enough for him. Later he told me about the opportunity to study Jazz in Holland. Maybe you want to check out this video from a workshop Mel did back at the Hilversums Conservatory. I'm the shy guy next to Mel in the back, legs crossed, bite on his nails. Mel was amazing. I can't find a website of Kenny's. Maybe you wanna send him the link, in case he haven't seen it. Thanks again, Mr Salamon!! Thx Mr Washington for all the great hints and links! ua-cam.com/video/S8_czkkkbIk/v-deo.html
