Hi Everyone, a while ago I filmed a Jackson's Art Haul when I purchased these wax based water-soluble Caran d'Ache Neocolor II crayons. I haven't had a chance to swatch them until now, and so I decided to share my first impressions with you! Let's count how many times I said "gorgeous". :))

Oh wow, I really like that the swatches are "what you see is what you get", unlike many water-soluble crayons that look very brighter and more garish after being activated with water and I have to tone them down. I like to use waterbrush for this type of medium because I always have the same water amount.
I cut a chunk off and put in a full pan with a magnet using the original 40 set tin. It holds 68 full pans so ordered a few more colors. I adore these paints. They last forever.
The gold and both turquoise colours are gorgeous. Thank you for the tip to use an acrylic bristle brush. It explains some of my previous frustrations with w/c crayons. Buying open stock is also a great idea for building a crayon palette. Thanks.

As for colors, you can’t go wrong with any of them, but here are some of my favorites that add to your collection (in no particular order): Venetian Red, Vermillion, Saffron, Pink, Raspberry Red, Green Ochre, Naples Yellow, Orangish Yellow, Sahara Yellow, Cobalt Blue, Sapphire Blue, Blue Jeans, Jade, Olive, Spring Green, Lime, Bright Green, Ruby Red, Aubergine, Indian Red, Light Cadmium Red, Scarlet, Payne's Grey, Coca, Beige. The greys are pretty too. (It’s too hard to make a short list!).
I also agree with you on the gold. I wasn’t sure about it at first, but then I saw someone online using it (Mindy Lacefield, maybe?) and so I got to know it a little bit better. It really is a gorgeous color.

I love Neo ll water color crayons, they apply so smooth and the color is so rich. You can do light washes and bold expressive work with them.
I use these for years. I work with them like if it was a watercolor brand, wet the point of the stick in water and put on my palette after I use watercolor brushes to paint on watercolor paper. I`ve W&Newton also. The range of colors with Neocolor II is amazing, can be used to everything !

I have some neo IIs that I’ve had for a bit that I just pulled out recently too and swatched to get a feel for them and I love them! They feel so creamy and are so vibrant and blend beautifully! Please do a tutorial with them and show us how you plan to use them. Also, I’d love to see a comparison of all your crayons including your pastel pencils.

What color was after the Fast Orange?
I love the neo IIs. They are beautiful, especially their pinks, blues, and greens. I would love to see you use them in a tutorial for flowers or a landscape or portraits.

Great video! I love the ones I have, also got open stock because the sets are not tempting. My faves are Sahara yellow, Orangish yellow, Raspberry red, pink, ultramarin pink, Jade (must), sky blue and light cobalt blue. That gold does look amazing!

I got the box of 40. Very nice colors. I still haven't figured out how to use them. You can't overlay layers of color because the color on top blends with the color underneath. Also, you have to be careful, these colours are not lightfast. I've done some tests and they fade very quickly when exposed to the sun. I use them as a crayon to enhance certain shapes in my watercolours which are obviously not for sale. That said, I use them for fun and to make very small surfaces.
I have a huge set of these, I haven’t used them in a long time...but when I did use them, it wasn’t for more serious art. More like for play, or making birthday cards for my nieces, things like mixed media projects.
Geslina M I used to think the same about them until I started seeing professional artists using them in Mixed Media. :)
Heading over the Jackson's to do some shopping in time for the weekend and plan a weekend of swatching these and the derwent pencils which I received today. Like you I buy mostly loose stock. Plan on the Caran D'arch pencil crayons also Alyona. I have heard really great things about these Neolcolour though never brought any so looking forward to experimenting with the ones I buy. I have quite a few of the Caran D'Ache crayons and I love them, too. They have very rich pigments, and are really useful for coloring faces because they have a wide range of flesh tones and colors for eyes. They have luscious colors. Some of my favorite colors (judging by how much I've used of that crayon so far) include: Golden Yellow, Ultrmarine Blue, Bleu Lavender, Turquoise, Sapphire Blue, Aubergine, Purple, Saffron, Emerald Green, Payne's Gray, Anthrocite, Olive Brown, and believe it or not, white. I really like them!

I have the 40 colors set. It doesn’t have any metallics in it. Damn... Now I have to get the metallics 😂 Everything Caran D’Ache is amazing but the Neocolors 2 are my favorite supply. And they don’t hurt brushes in anyway. They’re amazing.
These dissolve well with any kind of brush. I love that Gold color. I don't have that one yet. I will have to order it next time I place an order. I ordered the 15 set so I would have the basics, then I ordered about 15 more in colors that I liked.
hi Alyona, and thank you for a great video. A comparison one would be perfect :) I recently got "some" (20!) of those crayons and also totally fell in love with those. I bought the colors individually and now I'm thinking of getting some more ;)
Those I have the same with you are: Salmon Pink, Apricot, Golden Yellow, Turquoise Blue and Raw Siena.
I also have those and love them all: Sahara Yellow (super soft, pastel), Flesh (actually nice for skin & hair), Safran, Indian Red, Vermilion, Aubergine (gorgeous deep purple), Light Cobalt Blue (nice sky hue), Sky blue, Night blue, Lime Green, Moss Green, Chromium Oxid Green, Toledo Brown (deepest warm brown shadow), Charcoal grey & White (for darkening and lightening).
I tried to buy groups of 3, to get the most out of similar shade.
After watching your video, I'm really interested in this gold shade and also salmon looks quite nice!
What are your favorites?
apmoskau thanks for sharing your colours! Honestly every single colour I have bought I really love, if I had to pick just one it would be very hard, but I’d go for that Gold for it’s uniqueness! 😅
They are beautiful. I have the box set, it’s beautiful but heavy. I’ve never swatched mine, I need to do that. I’m thinking about the Pencils now, no box set though. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for sharing. If you love the gold that much, get as many as you can. They are already out of production and has been for a few years as far as I know. You can still get metallics, but they are only procuced as Neocolor 1.

@@AlyonasWatercolourCreations in the art stores I normally shop in, they only got random left overs of the metallics. There used to be 10 or 12 of them. The ones I got are all cracked, -and were already when I got them. I don't know if that has something to do with why they seems to have discontinued them?

what's the difference between these and the museum aquarelle pencils? Have you tried those?
Xizhou Xie I haven’t tried those, but from what I heard Museum Aquarelle Pencils are artist grade if I am not mistaken, so the pigment must be higher quality and lightfast. There is a major price difference per crayon/pencil. :)
Alyona what was the colour you used after the raw Sienna and before the gold? You did not say this colour and I cannot make the colour out on the video? Thank you

i have 66 of these. Also accidentally bought 2 turquoises but dont mind as i love them as well...
Can it be used as an alternative to watercolors and used as a color base and colored over it? And combine materials on top of it? I am confused because it is made of wax. I think that even with the addition of water, it will still have an insulating layer that will prevent the colored pencils from coloring? What do you advise me? Is it suitable for coloring over it with colored pencils after using it as watercolours?
Neocolour II tends to melt with water and you can use it in place of watercolour or mix it with watercolour. Actually today I used them in an abstract and it seems absolutely fine, can also go over it with watercolour pencils. Coloured pencils are ok too when I tried. But having said that I use my pencils with a lot of pressure for colour. Haven’t tried thin layers. Hope this helps! They are a lot of fun to use especially if you pick your colour palette. 🧡

can you make a purple with one of your blues and the deep red or a pink? These are great colors for skins and flowers and some leaves
Recovering Soul I think for a purple you’d need a more of a brighter pink, these are on the peach side. :)
These are lovely but the swatches are too small to get a real feel for them

They are not watercolor but they are nice.
Have you tried Windsor and Newton watercolor sticks? Just wondered if they are any good.

The W&N watercolor sticks are very dull. I have 5 and each color is pale and flat. Probably the binder to make them like a stick, I don't know.

Want to see all your water color crayons. I do NOT like the Dina Wakley Scribble Sticks. These are MUCH better.
Gina Troutman At one point I was considering getting the Dina Wakley scribble sticks but never did. Tim Holtz water soluble crayons meant to be great, but I managed to resist the temptation! 🤣 The video with all my water soluble and other pastels/crayons is already up on my channel, since this morning. :)
