There was also a system at the BBC where comedy could come under two different departments: "Light Entertainment" or "Variety". Some more 'out there' comedy shows preferred to be under Variety because the rules were less strict and they could get away with more edgy humour, but in order to qualify, they had to have, you know, some _variety_ in the content, and the easiest way to do that was to have a music break. It's basically punk comedy. These guys were also involved in the Comicstrip Presents series, which was a similar type of comedy. My favourite ones were there Five Go Mad movies (a take off of The Famous Five) and Bad News, where they play the part of a 80's rock band who think they are really good. After that Rik (Rik) and Adrien (Vivian) did the program Bottom. This also included 5 tours (live shows) which were amazing.

Everyone just burst out laughing.
Oh my!! I never thought I'd see the Young Ones again. Somewhere in a box I have an old bootleg VHS tape of them. It was when video tape machines were a new thing and punk rock was going strong. My toasty friends and I would sit and laugh until we cried because these guys were so outrageous. At the time I was a weird combination of Vyvyan and Neil. Dawn - with your sense of humor - you're going to love these guys.
I loved the Young ones growing up. when I saw that you had reacted to the show I had to suscribe and watch them. Thanks for watching this its an oldie but goodie.
I was a young teen when The Young Ones first aired and thought it was brilliant. We would be quoting lines from it, especially Rik and Neil's lines, at school the next day and for weeks afterwards. What made it extra special was that our parents didn't get it. I also remember Rik Mayall as Kevin Turvey in a show called A Kick Up the Eighties. As others have mentioned, Rik and Ade Edmondson in Bottom were hilarious. Glad it made you chuckle.
The Young Ones is a classic comedy series at the dawn of what was called Alternative Comedy. After watching both series you should check out Bottom which has Rik Mayall and Ade Edmundson. Another comedy series well worth watching is Blackadder. Keep up the great reactions.🤟
I saw this show when it was new, in my early teens. Everyone in my school were really into it. Adrian Edmonson, who plays Vyvyan, is married to Jennifer Saunders, wno played Eddie/Edina in Absolutely Fabulous.
After you described how your brain feels like it fell on the floor and everything stuck to it, my very first thought was, "well then you're in the perfect headspace for this show." I remember when it was first on MTV back in the day. I thought it made sense. Maybe you just had to be there, in that place at that time, riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave.
Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson based their characters on fellow students when they were at Manchester studying drama. Alexei Sayle played all the members of the Belowski family.
great reaction as always, RIP Rik Myall saw him live once in a show of his TV show The New Statesman, he kept forgetting his lines, but made it a funny joke!
Fun fact: Four of the five cast members were stand up comedians (only the one playing Mike was an actual actor). When they started the Young Ones, they didn't want a studio audience since they hated the "fake laughter" from other sitcoms, but when they did their first episode, they all failed their queues since they were used to an audience laughing, so they decided to bring back the studio audience. Also, additional fun fact: because of how the designated budget at the BBC worked, they got more money if they did a variety show rather than a sitcom, so that's why there's a live band in every episode (bar one) since that was one of the requirements (one they had no problem with, since they were the ones who booked the bands).
I used to watch this when I was at university in the mid-80s. Here in the US, they were reruns on Sunday nights, so it was the last thing before I went to bed and started my stressful week. Neal, Mike, Viv, Rick and Alexi, thanks!
This was one of the first non-music shows put on MTV. That also meant a lot of people were aggravated that videos were not on when they tuned in. Around this time, MTV also put on old episodes of "The Monkees."
First time I've seen a reaction to this. It's awesome! Used to watch it on the grundig system 2000 (the competition to VHS) as a kid. Now have them on dvd.
@@derekclear3913 🤣🤣 we had two for some reason, and my uncle n family friend had one each as well. Far superior in my view, tape on both sides of the tape. You could tape for 16 hours on a 4 hour tape sheet to LP. Also Had a switch to stop recording over instead of the removable tab.
back in the 70s/80s. these are four stereotypes of students you might have found in a house share - hippy/pretentious rebel/punk and mature student - I'll leave it to you to figure out who's who. 😆 It's also a pretty accurate depiction of how they (we) lived while at uni. this show is bonkers so be prepared for the unexpected and inexplicable. love your laugh by the way.
I am so psyched you are doing this show, this is one of my favorites.. I would also suggest The Vicar of Dibley, Keeping Up Apperances and Are You Being Served. Feel better Dawn
Glad you found this, it was an insane cult show in the day, very, very funny. Filmed mainly in Bristol (the 'student house' is in Clifton somewhere) it had the cream of UK comedy talent in the day: Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders, Hale & Pace, Terry Jones from Monty Python pops up, Gryff Rhys-Jones, Mel Smith, Stephen Fry, Robbie Coltrane (RIP Hagrid), Lenny Henry etc among famous faces. It featured a live band as a 'music show' got a bigger budget. Some of the main cast went on to do 'Bottom'.
07:00 "I never knew there was so much in it" was the advertising tagline for the "TV Times" magazine in the 1980s. 09:09 That's a bottle of "Golden Gum" glue, fondly remembered from primary school. Not that we sniffed it, mind you... I don't think it was the kind of fume-filled glue that substance abusers use :)
It's called anarchic humour :) It wasn't vinegar, it was glue that guy was sniffing :) The the Lux stuff Neil was pouring into the lentils were washing powder flakes.
Such a fun show! And a great reaction to it. Confused laughter and occasional "ew" is the normal response for this show from new viewers, so you're right on track. 😀 So many young comic actors played a part in this show outside of the main cast. Robbie Coltrane, Ben Elton, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Emma Thompson and others helped write the main story/side sketches and/or performed on the show. And it was ridiculous, rambunctious fun. It was sold to the BBC as a variety show so that they would get a bigger budget for each episode, so there was one musical number in the show with a variety of bands, at least two of which were at least one hit wonders here in the States: Madness and Dexy's Midnight Runners. Madness actually appeared twice. One of the episodes probably has its musical number cut out still. I don't remember why that was done, but "Ken Bishop's Nice Twelve" was edited out with their performance. Stewart Copeland of the band The Police was in that number. Have fun!
I'm so glad you loved this, Dawn! These buffoonish misanthropes made up a big part of my childhood. I'm cracking up at how you thought your description of sinus trouble would be the most disgusting thing in the video.
"The Young Ones" named after the 1962 Cliff Richard & the Shadows song (that you hear covered in the titles). Very slapstick show. The BBC weren't planning to option the show but the cast got good ratings with "The Comic Strip presents:" on Channel 4. So BBC2 changed its mind. The BBC allocates budgets by category. Variety had more than comedy - so they added puppetry & a song. There weren't much guidelines on what song or how it was integrated. “I never knew there was so much in it” was one of the straplines for a TV Times advert campaign.
I saw this show back in the Eighties. It was a bold move for American television, considering, especially today, to show this sort of content uncut. How things have changed.
The Young Ones was basically only there to subvert what a sitcom could be. They also had many epic 80's bands on the show to add some variety such as Madness, Motorhead, and the Dammed.
They are supposed to be students at ~ Scumbag College? This is around the time the movie "Animal House" came out - there is a good movie for you to see. Vyvyan was the punker, Rick was the snobby intellectual, Neil was a depressed hippy, Mike was the ladies man and scammer. They also tossed in punk bands for extra fun. After a couple shows, you'll see them settle into their characters (if that was possible). Don't look for anything to make sense - it's all chaos.
As an American teenager in the 80’s I saw this through MTV of all places! (Nostalgia) Good on everyone who suggested this to you as a follow up to Fawlty Towers. Great idea.
Glad you enjoyed this! It is very bizarre by today's standards, but a real classic! XD I am not sure if you have watched any of 'Bottom', but it stars Rik and Vivian's actors, and in my humble opinion is the best comedy of all time! Extremely crude, but hilarious! Either way, hope you enjoy the rest of the Young Ones! :)
this first episode is a pilot episode and kinda feels like it in points, I feel like The Young Ones comes into its own starting with the next episode, but on the whole it's rightly regarded as a classic. I don't think I've ever seen cartoon-style cut-away gags done with live action like this show does. Keep a close eye on the guest stars in the future episodes: the main cast/producers brought in a lot of their cohorts in the Alternative Comedy scene over the show's run and you'll see a lot of future stars pop up before they were famous.
Thing about the Young Ones is that a lot of it was a reaction to its times and Thatchers Britain. Generations that previously had gone into industry when they left school now found only the dole queue waiting, the mood of sticking two angry fingers up at authority and of disrespect to authority was rife. Much like Python they deconstructed format, in this case things like the show Rik smashes the tv while watching is a satire of the sort of patronising 'youth' television of the time that tried to be down and cool with the kids. They break the sitcom formula which at the time was all middle class based and family friendly and cosy and nice for the most part, so there sitcom was a bunch of people you wouldnt want to know in real life who dont like each other. They stop the sitcom for a band, they have a character, Alexie Sayles landlord, whose only job is to come on and do a few minutes of his very political far left stand up routine and leave again. it cuts away to puppets and talking objects. It tries to break all the staid and dull rules by which sitcoms tended to function by then. 'Youth' didnt want the sort of tv Rik put his foot through, they wanted something that represented how they felt, hopeless, abandonded by and let down by the state, angry and disprectful of the rules. It did all that and much more, in that sense its very much a product of its time and explains its massive appeal to folk like me who were teenagers at the time and revelled in its anarchy and (for its time) shock appeal.
I was wondering how much of the cultural context was still valid! "I never knew there was so much in it" came from an ad for that magazine. Not that I'd know, being a Yank, but I derived it from context and confirmed it later online.
I am American and watched this show when it aired in the 80s on MTV. I missed SO MANY references. I loved the general zaniness of it all, and I've spent the last ~40 years (can't possibly be true) uncovering all the references. One of the last ones I figured out is from this episode, when Neil says "when the trap door opens and I, like, die, it lights joss sticks and plays Rock Around The Clock". I didn't know what a joss stick was. Didn't help that I couldn't understand what he was actually saying, and there were no subtitles back then. No internet on which to look it up. But now I know, and I can die content. (Joss sticks == incense).
This is my favourite sitcom of all time. They had bands on which classed them as a variety programme, which gave them a bigger budget compared to a sitcom. I've just bought the 40th anniversary bluray and there are loads of scenes cut out on the dvd set, that are on the blu ray. What version are you watching henny?
Dear Dawn, welcome to the eighties. Seeing you watching T.Y.O. brings back so much memories, they where epic. Just like with Monty Python, I think you will appriciate the humor. Have fun!😊
Thanks darlin' girl for catching this series. We first say them on the MTV. Sooooo stupid funny. Kind of a Beavis and butthead "b&b" in real life before b&b was a thing. My favorite episodes vyvyan thinks he's pregnant and the university challenge where the lads are up against Stephen fry, Hugh Laurie, and Emma Thompson. You just keep talking, DM, I'll keep keep listening.
Glad to see you are experiencing "The Young Ones" It was a TV show in the early 80's that broke the traditional UK sit coms.
Ooooooh! Blackadder, YES!
Yes! Watch bottom and I’ll share the link on my bottom
Fb group….
Also "Guest House Paradiso" (basically Bottom the Movie).
I'm looking forward to Dawn eventually getting to watch Spaced, IT Crowd, and Black Books!
I saw this show when it was new, in my early teens. Everyone in my school were really into it.
Adrian Edmonson, who plays Vyvyan, is married to Jennifer Saunders, wno played Eddie/Edina in Absolutely Fabulous.
Such a great wild, comedy series! Long time since I've seen it, taking the chance now, with you. Hope you're getting better, Dawn!
After you described how your brain feels like it fell on the floor and everything stuck to it, my very first thought was, "well then you're in the perfect headspace for this show."
I remember when it was first on MTV back in the day.
I really love this series! Incredibly crazy. I bought the whole series on DVD. I sit and watch at least once a year.
great reaction as always, RIP Rik Myall saw him live once in a show of his TV show The New Statesman, he kept forgetting his lines, but made it a funny joke!
I cracked up just over your introduction, look forwards to seeing more episodes of The Young Ones.
When this was released to VHS I binge watched the entirety of both series in one sitting, and can still quotes lines at will. Yes, VHS
Guess you'll have to do Bottom after this then Dawn.
Who’s bottom??!
@@DawnMarieX Bottom is THE comedy show and the live stage-show, completely uncensored, is weapons grade rude, crude but very, very funny!
@@DawnMarieX Haha. Rick's I suppose. It's one of the comedies they did after The Young Ones and arguably better too.
Wow; I did not realize that I needed you reacting to The Young Ones this afternoon but I really did!
This was one of the first non-music shows put on MTV. That also meant a lot of people were aggravated that videos were not on when they tuned in. Around this time, MTV also put on old episodes of "The Monkees."
Thanks ! I had forgotten how fun those were back in the day . . .
First time I've seen a reaction to this. It's awesome! Used to watch it on the grundig system 2000 (the competition to VHS) as a kid. Now have them on dvd.
Wow, there was a rumour back in my Rumbelows (WE'VE GOT A VIDEO) days that someone on the planet had a 2000 system.........and they were right.😅
@@derekclear3913 🤣🤣 we had two for some reason, and my uncle n family friend had one each as well.
The reference for the TV times magazine had the slogan that people in the ad would say "I never knew there was so much in it."
A fun show. Used to watch it on MTV. Had the VHS set and transferred them onto DVD.
It's called anarchic humour :) It wasn't vinegar, it was glue that guy was sniffing :)
The the Lux stuff Neil was pouring into the lentils were washing powder flakes.
omg teh young ones? what a throw back. this series was really somethign else
😂 Don't even try to make sense of the young ones, it's just brilliant chaos.
If you like The Young Ones, you're going to love Bottom.
Such a fun show! And a great reaction to it. Confused laughter and occasional "ew" is the normal response for this show from new viewers, so you're right on track. 😀
So many young comic actors played a part in this show outside of the main cast.
Have fun!
If my memory serves be right, a show that had a musical number could be called a variety show and get a bigger budget from BBC. :)
Holy crap never in my life have I seen anyone react to this! I used to watch all of these episodes over and over lmaooo
A great wacky show that was loved... thanks for sharing... Bless you
I'm so glad you loved this, Dawn!
Watching this show for the first time while you're suffering various ailments is like suffering through a fever dream lol.
Loved your reaction to Duck Soup, here’s another of my favorites.
"Drop dead Fred guy" would be Rik Mayall. Comedy genius who sadly died a few years ago.
This was one of my favourite shows growing up. ❤️
The anarchist (Rick), the punk (Vyvyan), the hippie (Neil), the cool guy (Mike) - all students, sharing a house
Neil, your bedroom's on fire!
The intro/outro beat, is that Getter/Terror Reid?
As an American teenager in the 80’s I saw this through MTV of all places! (Nostalgia) Good on everyone who suggested this to you as a follow up to Fawlty Towers. Great idea.
Glad you enjoyed this! It is very bizarre by today's standards, but a real classic! XD I am not sure if you have watched any of 'Bottom', but it stars Rik and Vivian's actors, and in my humble opinion is the best comedy of all time! Extremely crude, but hilarious! Either way, hope you enjoy the rest of the Young Ones! :)
"(Rik Mayall) "Did you see the floats?"
(Ade Edmondson) "I thought I flushed it."
And by which standards *isn't* it bizarre?
@@ccthomas Fair point XD
this first episode is a pilot episode and kinda feels like it in points, I feel like The Young Ones comes into its own starting with the next episode, but on the whole it's rightly regarded as a classic.
But the irony is that Rik was a conservative who thought he was a leftie (as writer Ben Elton pointed out in a recent interview).
It's like this a lot, sometimes it makes more sense but not often, Dawn.
That was great my brother and I used to watch it all the time way back when never did get a Ford tippex lol
A great series when it 1st came out in 1984 brought back memories
Holy shit! I never thought Dawn would get to the Young Ones any time soon! Super happy!
The only reason they had random bands in the show is because they got a larger budget from the BBC as an entertainment show rather than a sitcom 😂
But it helped to make the show even more loved by The Kids.
"What the hell is going on?" Yea we even thought that in the 80's. LOL
This, blackadder and bottom were the comedy of my childhood, they're just hilarious
Have fun!😊
"I thought your were dead"!¨
"But that's no reason to hassle me on the toilet."
Nice one Dawn, looking forward to next episodes, this show is utter chaos lol.
Glad to see you are experiencing "The Young Ones" It was a TV show in the early 80's that broke the traditional UK sit coms. It became a cult classic and it is funny, bold and irrelevant for its time which is why they did it for to shake up the boring same old stale shite. Found your channel only recently, loving it and liking and subscribed to it. Cheers and all the best wishes to you for a great 2023. You will love "The Young Ones" and if You want more like this, check out episodes of "bottom" with Rik and Adrian (Vivian) but enjoy these episodes. So worth it. Cheers from Australia, ( the part of NSW where they film 'I'm a celebrity, get me out of here' from our " great Aussie Jungle" LMAO. Best wishes to you, cheers.
9:20 That's Ben Elton, the guy that wrote the show.
When it came to the US I got it immediately and laughed my ass off😂😂😂
