I think she's got one of the greatest laughs on UA-cam I've ever heard and because of that infectious laugh is one of the reasons I watch her programs! 😸😂😬😅😃
Your laugh is so infectious Dawn. Each episode gets better and more random. The musical selection gets very good, very soon. Thanks so much again for watching this. The series ‘Bottom ‘is definitely worth having a look at, especially the Ferris Wheel episode, after The Young Ones of course.
Neil was in a movie called Yellowbeard which also has Eric Idle, Graham Chapman(Yellowbeard), Marty Feldman, Madeline Kahn, and Peter Boyle. Just to name a few. Check it out.
*6:00** it is hagred! & rick was nearly in harry potter hey! he was a prof at hogwarts, but all his scenes were cut. but they were filmed, i promise you!* is that a known story? im sure everything is by now. _JC
Oh Yes, The Young Ones.... What a great show this was!!! Rik & Ade were also in a show called 'The Dangerous Brothers' which is another example of their amazing chemistry & stage humour. Drop Dead Fred is one of my favourite movies, I watched it too when I was a kid and I still love it today. 'Bottom' should also be on your list, Rik & Ade again at their best!!
The actors playing Rik, Vivian, and Neil were alo in a comedy troupe known as The Comic Strip which filmed comedy specials for tv. Some of the funniest were The Famous Five parodies (Five Go Mad in Dorset, etc) and the struggling Heavy Metal band, Bad News. Bad News had two specials filmed mockumentary style. Dawn French & Jennifer Saunders were also in the Comic Strip.
HAGRID! Robbie Coltrane appears a couple of times through the series, and so does Dawn French, who was the opera singer in the painting at Hogwarts. There is also a Comic Relief connection. In a French & Saunders skit, Dawn French (again) plays young Harry Potter, with Nigel Planer (Neil the Hippie) as Dumbledore, who tells Harry the truth at last: "you're a WOMAN, Harry."
The show just gets better and better with each successive episode. Alexei's song is the reason I bought a pair of Doc Martens boots when I went to England a few months ago!
Rik was also cast as "Peeves", the ghost, in the Harry Potter films, but all his scenes were cut, and for some reason they never released them in Outtakes...probably an Estate payment reason.
Thanks again for The Young Ones! I thought last year ended well with Fawlty Towers, but this is so good. It's nostalgia overload every time you upload one. Brings me back and makes me feel like a kid again. This is part of my upbringing. It made me who I am today. Scary thought...
Yes Dawn, in real life Buddy Holly sadly died in a plane crash together with two other singers Ritchie Valens (known for the song La Bamba) and The Big Bopper. Yep, I know Rik Mayall has a small role in An American Werewolf in London, he's one of the pub regulars and even though he didn't have or barely had any lines, you could still recognize him.
He also has a pretty major role in "Reckless Kelly" probably the best of the Yahoo Serious films (or maybe it's just my personal favorite) But that one also has Hugo Weaving as the evil villain.
Rik Mayall appears in two episodes of Blackadder ("Bells" and "Private Plane"), as does Hagrid/Robbie Coltrane in one episode ("Ink and Incapability").
Have to say, Rik being in American Werewolf in London, must be one of the least known facts about him. I didn't know and I have watched him since he was Kevin Turvey, and also watched the film. Well done you :)
It's a great way to start off the weekend with Dawn's reaction with her great laugh. Alexi taking a few beats in the middle of the song and throwing in some Human League lyrics cracks me up every time. 😃
Watching you try to make sense of this show reminds me of when I listened to Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music - my brain was trying so very hard to discern patterns and meaning in the sounds, but it was just absurdity. 🤣
I did know Rik was in american werewolf in london but good catch because he is basically just an extra in that :) And yeah like everyone else says, you have to watch bottom at some point ;) (last edit) The guy Rik is playing chess with in american werewolf is also in one of the episodes of bottom btw :)
Really enjoyed this reaction! Love the Young Ones, one of my all time favorite sitcoms! It's a shame the show only ran for two seasons. I have their DVD box set and still watch it to this day. I gave you a shout-out on my Instagram, and posted a pic. Thumbs up as always! 👍💙
I have missed this show so much. I need to try and find it on DVD again. This is just what the doctor ordered when you're feeling a little sick. Just don't try to get too much deep meaning out of it and you'll have a blast.
That may be the best summary of this show I have heard - pure carnage, all the time. (Rik Mayall had a massive career, alas he died just a few years ago.)
They guy who plays there landlord and the guy who did the song in this episode is Alexie Sayle. An 'alternative comedian' from the 80's who hung around in the same circles as Rik and Ade and Stephen Fry and Hugn Laurie and the gang but never went onto the same kind of fame. Mainly because he wasn't very funny. Ben Elton, who also wrote Blackadder from series 2 and The Thin Blue Line also shows up in at least one episode.
"Man Down" starring Greg Davies as a not very good teacher. Rick Mayall played his father in the show. Many have remarked how similar the two men look (though Greg is about a foot taller), and apparently they got along quite well doing the show. I have yet to see it, myself. But I've seen Greg Davies on "The Graham Norton Show" talk about his TV show, and I've seen his stand-up, and I've long been curious to find "Man Down" here in the States. Gotta keep looking...
Yep, it's def the best medicine, as they say. Can't remember where, but I've seen Rik do standup where he literally just stands there going 'What?' and the audience is in fits. Such raw talent. You'll find this short series gets progressively better as the characters develop, leading up to the best of them all, 'Bambi', aka University Challenge. Hang in there, midsummer's morn.
Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson's 'Bottom' is a good watch. And the 'Bottom Live' shows are a must watch. But those might be a bit too long for YT so enjoy them in a couch.
The best way to conseptualise the Young Ones is as a Comic Book come to life. They are not real people, they are cartoon characters; this is why they can hurt themselves and each other, break the 4th wall, and have nonsense plots. But this is also why they are endlessly funny. And the joke writing is as good as it gets. Many lines i still quote to this day, many years after having watched this ''... by the way, It was a complete lie a bout the oil.'' The whole episode is the build up to that punchline.
Rik Mayall did a sort of prototype 'Rik' as a (hopeless) investigative reporter "Kevin Turvey", appearing in short segments in a show called A Kick Up the Eighties. The rest of the show was largely forgettable, and can safely be ignored, but the Kevin Turvey clips exist on ther own on youtube, and could be watched together as a one-off. ua-cam.com/video/ZICCwgLCcW0/v-deo.html
I’d never heard of Doc Martens before seeing this back in the 80s (back in Australia). I wonder if this had anything to with the popularity of the shoes. Funny enough, my wife in the US was a huge fan of Doc Martens, but had never heard of this show. 🤷♂️
The problem with acting in a too iconic role, like Hagrid, is that your other, perhaps even better performances, are placed in the shadows. Only found when searched for. Robbie Coltrane, rest remebered.
*i think it is funnier bc you edit around the laff trax!* & that is also why i probs would never watch it b4. my mothers lover was always trying to get me to watch it. _JC
Since you loved Python and of course the Marx Brothers I hope you will invest your time to watch the 4 Pink Panther movies with Peter Sellers... they were hysterical but if you want to start grom the beginning the actual first movie was called a Shot In the Dark with Peter Sellers thats how the Pink Panther movie series was born... you will thank me later
This is really nitpicking Dawn cause you are doing great but you can, post more than just 7 mins or so, the show itself is only 35m & you can cut the music & some of the skits& still have plenty left over without getting hit for copyright. If you are having trouble maybe you can split them in two parts of 13-15-m each? It is so great seeing how much you love the show,& i know you have to cut out tons of funny stuff. the show is so short though, only 12 episodes so really every bit is precious!
''Ha Ha! Missed Both My Legs'' Is one of the funniest lines ever written
"ha ha, missed both my legs!" is still one of the funniest lines, cracks me up every time =)
Me and my brother say that anytime we get hurt :D Still funny after 35 years for us!
So great they re-used it twice in the bottom live shows.
I didn't know what to make of this show when MTV first aired it in America. It's sooo good.
I think she's got one of the greatest laughs on UA-cam I've ever heard and because of that infectious laugh is one of the reasons I watch her programs! 😸😂😬😅😃
I have no evidence to suggest that you are incorrect. Therefore the only logical conclusion is that she is in fact a lovely person.
one of my favourite lines from the series: " You won't catch me with mi trousers"
Ha, missed both my legs! Is still a well used line in my family.
Fun fact: The actor who plays Neil the hippie, Nigel Planer, did many audiobooks for the Discworld series
Also tony robinson
And Vyvyn directed the music video About the Weather by 10000 maniacs
REALLY. That's actually mint, I didn't know that at all. I should look those audios up, love Pratchett's stuff.
@@Geth-Who Can say he did an absolutely brilliant job
A reminder, Dawn. . Rik Mayall was one of the original WRITERS of the show. . . so MUSHROOMS? NO WAY! This show was the product of NATURAL MADNESS. :)

I have the Bad News album. Yes, they released an album. Their Bohemian Rhapsody cover is brilliant.
Dawn & Jennifer almost died filming one of the Comic Strips (Fistful of Travellers Cheques I think)
@@majbloodnok I remember their second special was filmed at Donnington in front of big names like Ozzy etc lol
@@MajorParts food poisoning I think.

Rick Mayell had a spot on the sketch show, "A Kick Up The 80s" as Kevin Turvey, investigative reporter.
It was really, really interesting actually!
HAGRID! Robbie Coltrane appears a couple of times through the series, and so does Dawn French, who was the opera singer in the painting at Hogwarts.

A line from Ron about "people playing jokes" appears to have been dubbed over "Peeves playing jokes"
Take good care Dawn

The University Challenge episode. It’s the funniest and best
Single best episode of television ever
Loving the Young Ones reactions... Can't wait to see your Bottom (!)
By the way, Alexei Sayle has a smallish (but speaking) role in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. He also had an appearance in Doctor Who!
He also has a pretty major role in "Reckless Kelly" probably the best of the Yahoo Serious films (or maybe it's just my personal favorite) But that one also has Hugo Weaving as the evil villain.

Great laughing and watching along with you, Dawn.
The "Doctor Martin" singer is Alexei Sayle, who had his own comedy show.

Rik Mayall appears in two episodes of Blackadder ("Bells" and "Private Plane"), as does Hagrid/Robbie Coltrane in one episode ("Ink and Incapability").

I love The Young Ones! New subscriber, can’t wait for you to watch more ❤🎉
Alexi Sayle had a career as a comedian then became a writer. He also had a couple of comedy songs and some TV series under his belt.
Vyvian is my spirit animal!
Yeah…. I knew dawn would love this one!!❤️💕👍🏻
4:21 the reaction to a runny bottom is timeless :)
I remember hearing Rik was in one of the Harry Potter movies but the part he was in was cut 😢

Rik is in a few episodes of Blackadder. Which is amazing especially after the 1st season.

Great reaction, once again. If you like The young ones you'll love Bottom (guess loads of people have said that)
The live shows are so funny
Robbie Coltrane, (Hagrid) began his career as a comedian.
I hope you do the second season. Motorhead does ace of spades in the opening episode.

Hi Dawn. I hope you're going to react to The Marx Brothers Movie 'Go West'. Here's hoping : )
Strange how everything and nothing changes since this show, young people stuck with a corrupt Tory Government, power to the People
all she needs now is to see Alan B'stard!
You've got to watch "Bottom" so much better than this.

The punk Marx Brothers
