Spider changed this song forever. Whereas past renditions were melancholy, his evokes an overwhelming sense of bitter grief. This is how the song should be sung.
@@lindareidy2091I met Shane by chance in a bar in Aberdeen around 85 when the Pogues played Aberdeen, and Shane walked into the bar like Clint Eastwood in a spaghetti western film, and walked straight over to our table, and said to me and my then boyfriend, “you are the coolest guys in the room and not fckn squares, can I join you” so he pulled up a chair and by end of our chat he put us on the guest list and we walked into the gig with him, he was a laugh and a top man. The gig was great. Sleep easy Shane ❤
I almost cried watching this. The Pogues have been part of my life since soooo long. I can barely write. Farewell Shane, there was no one, ever, like you.
@KatharinaK117 the lyrics to that song should never been changed. All those versions that have been sanitised should never see the light of day again.
Thank you Shane and The Pogues for triggering a real passion for Irish folk music since 1986 and for the many stays and encounters in Ireland; you started it all. Ronan, 56, from France
Thanks to sky news who broadcasted the funeral ceremony via satellite, so we could be with you here in Germany ! Haunting and beautiful ceremony. Long live Ireland 🇮🇪 and the Irish ☘️. Rest easy Shane ❤

RIP Shane. May your glass be ever full, may the roof over your head always be strong, and may you be in Heaven half an hour before the Devil knows your 're dead.
The most powerful funeral Ireland has been attributed to in many, many decades..... So privileged to have witnessed this. Passionate and liberating. I hope the world can see, can feel, how special this moment is.
My heart is breaking at this performance. I do not know how anyone musters the strength to sing this song to someone they love. May memories of Shane bring comfort to his comrades, his friends, his beloveds, his band mates. The Pogues FOREVER. ☘
What a most brilliant band The Pogues were/are. Shane's history has only started, from now on he will be talked about along with all the other great poets, songwriters, freedom fighters, truth-tellers and storytellers of Ireland
amazing tribute from the pogues, Shane would’ve been proud.. strange I’ve barely shed a tear at a family funeral but I did today.. thank you shane for the beautiful crafted songs you left for the world to enjoy ❤
There is not much in contemporary Ireland to say you can be proud of. However this has taken me by surprise. I am truly thankful and proud to be Irish today. RIP Shane.
I agree. My grandparents emigrated to an Irish city for work, from a Gaeltacht area, and it hurts me deeply to see firsthand the hardline split between their culture and English speaking Ireland (my own primary culture). But today it's even harder to feel that to be Irish is something unique and to be treasured, as so many people take their cultural cues from places like the USA (many of the youngest people don't even have accents I recognise as Irish anymore) and certain parts of Dublin to a far greater extent than in the past it seems to me. Every generation we seem to become more and more culturally assimilated to the Greater Anglosphere, headed by the USA with Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Ireland making up the body. Maybe I am overly acutely aware of this, as trips back to my grandparents area to visit family have shown me how poor the state of language and culture has become in many parts of what was in my grandparents day a strongly Irish speaking area (my cousins were raised there with one Irish speaking father and one English speaking mother from elsewhere, and they were raised with English. Their Irish came from the school and is quite poor compared to their English and nothing like their fathers or my grandparents Irish). Sorry, I went off on a tangent... Ar dheis Dé go raibh t'anam Shane. Ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís.
@@cigh7445I see comparisons with what has happened in my country with the language(wales) my brother born in 1958 was the first member of my family to have english as a first language myself and my sister born a few years later are the same(but we are around 60% fluent) the thing that really gets me is my father and his family were nationalists(as am i and my brother, sister) he would speak welsh to his family and anybody he knew but english to us you don,t think of the reasons why at the time but as you get older the only question is why? he has passed now and i never got to ask that question, but im proud to say my two children are fluent and the eldest is doing a phd in welsh at university, the rest of the world would think it mad that a family could live in the same house and speak two languages that some members of the family could not fully understand but its all about keeping language and heritage alive, best of luck to you, yma o hyd.
You know something else that goes unspoken but really should too is the fact the Pogues band stook with him all these years, Shane was a gem a true gent and a beautiful human but he would be the first to admit he had some rough times and through it all like one large family they stuck together all these years so also big respect to the band members of the Pogues for sticking with him literally to the very end
This had to have been the hardest, toughest performance ever for The Pogues. Totally understandable. I hope they all got to have a few pints afterwards.
Stunning by Spider for the last ever Pogues performance. What a man. What a band. RIP Shane.

too right this is out of this world super spiderman
I agree. You put it into words how I felt. A stunning performance.
An immense achievement by Spider. Your heart breaks for him, watching that. What a dignified, passionate and appropriate tribute to his fallen friend.
Truer words have never been spoken . In fact it was heartbreaking for me to see the Pogues for the very last time .
the real peter parker aka spiderman
so right that the lads should be the ones singing this wee tune
Big up Spider Stacy 😢
This is a masterful performance by Spider Stacey. This is very likely the last ever Pogues performance, but what absolutely moving way to go out.
Best man to ever play the tin whistle
Poor Spider. This has to be the most heart-rending performance I have ever seen. 💔💔💔
He's a lovely guy. I met him and the crew except for Shane. The most genuine and down to earth guys you could meet.
I could have never done that, even for my best friend......I'm a cryer
Goodnight, and joy be with you all 😢
A great send-off for Shane, though.

Well done Spider Stacy. He did a fantastic job that Shane would be proud of. We could all wish in life we had friends as loyal as these.

Almost? I'm in bits.
Almost? You're a hard man. 😊
Me too
Watching a year later. Have goosebumps from head to toe.
When the song was over, the priest said: “I must be dead and I’m in Heaven…The Pogues”❤💚❤️
He also quoted Bob Dylan in his homily. He understood the moment

Truly heaven, Pogues also with John Sheahan from the Dubliners.
I was wondering if that was him!

Great farewell. I'm really sad these days.

The way he is looking down at the end of the song...heartbreaking, well done lad.
