The original singer's name is Tarja (rhymes with "ARIA"). She was with the band from 1996-2005. The split wasn't amicable and many fans have STRONG opinions about it. What matters is she has done well as a solo artist and there has been forgiveness from both sides. She and Floor are also good friends. The best songs to check her out are "Nemo" and "Phantom of the Opera" from the END OF AN ERA concert.
The second lead singer was Annette Olzon from 2017-2012. Many fans didn't care for her for her more pop vocals compared to Tarja. Her departure from the band was also not amicable. I think the official video for "Amaranth" is Anette at her best! She's a great singer, just not a great fit.
From 2013-present, God (aka- Floor) has been the lead singer.
The story I heard about the meaning of this song is that Tuomas wrote it because he was sick of other guys looking at his girlfriend at the time. Hence the line, 'I wish I had your angel tonight'. This song is one of their more radio friendly songs, so while great it doesn't really showcase Tarja's vocals as well as some other songs do. I second the suggestions of End of all Hope, Wishmaster, and Phantom of the Opera as they are all great ones of hers.
Tarja is a much more operatic singer than Floor, so to me it isn't so much a who is better than, as their styles and techniques are just different. Floor absolutely can do the operatic stuff, she's amazing at it, but her real strength is in her versatility. There also WAS a singer in between Tarja and Floor, Anette. She gets a lot of hate that isn't deserved in my opinion. She is a lot more of a pop singer and doesn't have the range or versatility that the other two have, but she's still great.

I prefer the old Nightwish, with it dark passion. In contrast the "new" Nightwish became more commercial and pop band at my taste.
Floor is great, she's great vocalist, great performer but still I prefer Tarja.

The "piano guy" (Tuomas Holopainen) is the original Nightwish founder in 1996. He composes most of the music & lyrics for Nightwish. He is considered on the "genius" side even when he was a little boy. Tuomas originally wanted to be a biologist. But while studying in NY, he went to see Metallica and that was it for him. He and Tarja (pronounced Tarya) were attending a music conservatory at the same time. He invited her to join the NW band as lead singer. Tuomas also invited guitarist Emppu Vuorinen. The drummer, Jukka Nevalainen (friend of Emppu) was invited to round out the band. The bassist, Marko Hietala, was invited to join in 2001.
As the band members (and the band sound) matured, personalities changed. Tarja's sound was on the operatic side and Tuomas wrote music to suit her voice. Why Tarja was replaced can be found on the Internets. The second NW lead singer was Anette Olzen, who had a pop sound. Tuomas wrote music to suit her voice. Albums with Anette as lead singer sold briskly. Also Anette was in NW's movie, "Imaginaerum" and performed her part spectacularly. The reason for Anette's departure from the band can be found on the Internets.
Floor Jansen was invited to join the band as lead vocalist in 2012 to help them finish up their world tour. She was given 48 hours to learn the songs which she did on her flight over from the Netherlands to Seattle. (There is a video about this.) Floor became a permanent member in 2013. Floor has been performing on stage as a metal singer since she was 16 (she's now 42). In 1999, she entered the Dutch Rock Academy and three years later entered the Conservatorium Tilburg. Floor has studied musical theatre and opera. While she doesn't like to be pegged into a certain vocal range, Floor is basically a three+ octave soprano. As she has aged and studied/practiced music more, her voice has changed. She has more colours in her voice and she can hold a note dang long. As for Tuomas writing music for Floor, he doesn't have to worry too much about writing music to suit her voice. She can sing about anything and in any style. Floor composed some of her own music and collaborated with songwriters to create her first solo pop album "Paragon" (2023). In April 2021, she had pancreatis and her gall bladder was removed. She also was diagnosed with breast cancer around Nov 2022 and is now cancer free after treatment. Floor and her husband, Hannes van Dahl (lead drummer of the metal band, Sabaton) are expecting their second child...if the child hasn't arrived already. Cheers!
Tarja was the singer when I first got into Nightwish, and her vocals were a big part of me becoming a fan. I fell away after she left, as I wasn’t a fan of Anette in comparison, but Floor got me back into Nightwish and I personally prefer her versatility and range and she’s taken them to a new level.
The keyboarder is definitely the same guy, that’s Toumas, he’s the founder, songwriter and composter of nearly all their music.

I like Tarja's voice and can not really get into Anette's voice that much and have tried. For me Floor isn't just the best singer for Nightwish, but the best singer and front person I have ever heard. Floor's versatility is just unbelievable for me, she can sing anything, any style.
Before Floor there were two other singers, Tarja (the original) and Anette (the 2nd).
This is still not completely the original line-up. Marko wasn't their first bassist. Their first bassist was Sami Vänskä who was fired around 2000 and the replaced by Marko.
You should really see a live performance with Tarja as their lead singer. Slaying the Dreamer from End of an Era is a good performance.
I think also Tarja is better live.
Nightwish rose to fame with Tarja. When Floor joined the band, they were already huge.
Tarja was fired from Nightwish due to some conflict with Tarja, Tarja's husband (her manager) and the band. The reasons are still to this day unclear but to be fair, we have no right to know them if the band members don't want to us to know. It was a huge sh*t storm in the media at the time. Still some fans fight over who is the "best" singer.
After Tarja's era came Anette Olzon. She wasn't really liked that much by all the fans. Lots of them wanted Tarja back. I think the two albums that Anette was in were magnificent.
I don't think you can really say which is the "better" singer, it's more like which one you prefer or what singer you prefer out of those three.
And I would also like to point out that Tarja was quite young in this. I think her voice is beautiful and very powerful (so is Floor's) but I prefer what Tarja's voice evolved into after her time in Nightwish. After Nightwish Tarja started her own, very successful, solo career that is still going. She trained her voice more and more. Nowadays Tarja has this very dark, strong chest voice that you can't really hear when she was still in Nightwish.
She still has those high operatic notes aswell but her vocal range has just become huge.

This song was part of the Waken concert in 2013 - so Floor.sang it too. Do a comparison. Lyrically it's basically a metal version of Jesse's Girl. (I wish that I had Jesse's girl. Why can't I find her - a woman like that.)
Taeja - original singer - operatic range - this one is probably as low as she got while she was with Nightwish - Ghost Love Score - Nemo - Sleeping Sun - Romanticide - Ever Dream - and if you want to hear her high notes - the Nightwish version of Phantom of the Opera

Nightwish has some extremely dark songs and they're among their best.
This song is about hecklers outside a club targeting a couple, it's fun when a song can be interpreted in several different ways.

Both Tarja and Floor are great. Have been listening them for 20+ years, have seen both of them live multiple times, both absolutely fantastic! It is understandable you like Floor better since you've been introduced to Nightwish with one of the absolute masterpieces "Ghost Love Score" where, understandable, you've had your first Floorgasm (yes, there is an official term) ;) Love your reactions, very sincere and thoughtful. Tarja Turunen was formed and graduated as an opera singer, which it has helped her to develop quickly symphonic gothic metal abilities. For me and 'old Nightwish' fans who were teenagers at the beginning of 00', Tarja was definitely the best singer of Nightwish, but also an excellent musician. Nowadays, she speaks Spanish very well because she's married with an Argentinian man. Well, if you really want to know about Nightwish history, you can back to the past.
I have liked/loved The music of Nightwish always, but my ears and my musical soul, never beared Tarja's voice. So i only really started listening to them for real when Floor came into the band. And what a freakin magical journey it has been 🥰🥰🖤

Yes there has been three vocalists with NW. Tarja, Anette, and Floor. Anette´s Vocals with song called Bye Bye beautiful has been streamed more than 148 million times
by YT, or more because there is an other Bye Bye Beautiful by Anette and about 12 million streams. If you get interested enough you will be surprised by Anette and the girls.

Anette was singer number two for Nightwish and she had more of a pop voice, while Tarja was 100% classical. Both Tarja and Anette were good in their own right, but Floor is on an entirely different level as she can sing anything from death growls to opera and everything in between. Just NO - this is the best video and there is live in "End of an Era" for this - The best live. Tarja made NW possible with Tuomas and then came the replacements and substitutes. Actually all the NW singers are great and some songs do "belong" to them where they are at their best. Tuomas wrote these songs just for them and for their voices.

Tarja is so much better, in my opinion. Her voice is unique. If you want to compare Tarja and Floor you should react more Tarja's song. She's amazing, she sings she plays the piano, she's a complete artist.
For me Tarja's version of this song is better. First, strictly subjective, this band composition was what got me into music and Nightwish, so the nostalgia will make me always see this one as best version of the band, second, more objectively - Tuomas is the composer and he creates songs with singer's capabilities in mind - and it can be heard. Floor is great, but in songs written for Tarja, she's the best imo. I don't know how Tarja would do in songs written for Floor, but I guess I'd prefer Floor in them. But their both performances are great, the differenece isnt's that great. Annette had differend type of vocals, and she didn't perform that good in older songs - but when she sang ones written for her, it sounded good (just not in original Nightwish's spirit, that's what put many people off).

Foor pode ser mais versátil. Mas tarja interpretou as músicas como deveria ser. O nw antigo era meio sombrio. Então não tinha necessidade de cantar as músicas com gritos como a flor faz. Então pra mim tarja cantou melhor na banda

Actually you have chosen one of the worst songs to react on Nightwish with Tarja as singer because „I wish I had an angel“ is one of their not so typical songs since it has a more rocky vibe. „Ghost love score“ you mentioned and listened with Floor live at Wacken is a track that was originally sung by Tarja. You should definitvely react to a live version of a song with Tarja.
Floor is the third singer of Nightwish. After Tarja there was Anette who has a more Pop-voice.

Yep,out of the three of them she’s the vocalist with the greatest range,widest number of styles and best interaction with both the fans and the band itself. Tarja was only able to do the opera thing,Annette was only able to do pop rock,whereas Floor is the complete package that can do it all….definitely the best singer NW could’ve hoped for.

There are so many songs left to watch and react to. Some of the more heavy songs/ stories are still ahead. "The poet and the pendelum" are a masterpiece and is about the band creator and keyboardist Toumas time when he was down and thinking about suicide. A spoiler to that song is that in one part of the song a voice says he only have 3 minutes back to live, and exactlly 3 minutes later the blade cuts loudly...
