I used to love this opening. every time i was over my grandparents and my grandfather was watching channel 4, every 6 pm i would hear this opening and it would make me smile. Now hearing it again in 2015, brings back memories. I hate that they got rid of this opening.
WNBC really needs to bring back the old Edd Kalehoff 'Newschannel 4' music package, because Edd Kalehoff really knows how to capture that New York vibe and aesthetic into his arrangements. At least WABC and WPVI knew if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Well the 1996-00 Rangers intro theme was definitely not a Kalehoff piece, no wonder it was hated by many. It was your typical "Hey, Y2K is coming, Yo!" Song. It was a miracle that Edd would return to do the more aggressive 2000-06 theme, which was a perfect sequel to his iconic 1992-96 theme. As for Jose's comment about my ABC station, WPVI, they still rock that old 1972 theme music and montage intro. It's more than a tradition... It's a Philly Thing.
*big bells ringing* (In Scott Chapin's voice): "You're watching NBC 4, the Tristate News Channel...and now Chuck Scarborough, Sue Simmons, Janice Huff and Len Berman... *big bells ringing*. This is News Channel 4 at 11".
It also served as a de facto affiliate music package for the NBC affiliate stations, along with Frank Gari's "NBC Collection" (Speed of Life (WXIA/WTLV), News Now (commissioned for WTVJ in 1997), New Millennium and KNBC's "Premier").
I really wanna know about the angsty moodiness at 0:48 … like why tho? Don’t get me wrong that whole 0:48 - 1:58 passage is my favourite part of the theme tho
2:22 brings fun memories when the newschannel4 dot com plug and copyright title would appear on screen, being transitioned with that funky/tacky "blind" Chyron iNFiNiT! effect.
"You're watching NBC 4, the Tri-State News Channel. And now, Sue Simmons, Dean Shepard, Al Roker, and Len Berman. This is NewsChannel 4, Live at Five." "You're watching NBC 4, the Tri-State News Channel. And now, Sue Simmons, Chuck Scarborough, Janice Huff, and Len Berman. This is News Channel 4 at 6:00/11:00."
I took it someone (works/worked there) wanted to rip the cut into something they could play at home, like a dubbing to VHS or something that from a Beta tape.
incredibly late reply but I know for sure it was used in the IDs for the "NBC America" feed they had for dish network etc (which was basically just WNBC lol), not sure about ku-band though sadly
@@Barber747 There's plenty of cuts and seconds that doesn't have the chimes. Also several years after WCBS Grand was discontinued on WCBS-TV, they used the closing cut for the Showcase Showdown.
Warner Bros./UPN shit. The network of the most popular sitcom worldwide, "Seinfeld." Only UPN's theme was more poppin' but black people went crazy to this theme! African Episcopal choir shit!
This was WNBC 4's best news theme ever. Written by Edd. #NOSURPRISE
Edd Kalehoff's work in the trash? No wonder this world is going to Hell. This was Channel 4's best news theme EVER!

Edd Kalehoff's MSG Knicks and Rangers themes are just another good example of that

although slightly modernized, they kept the same sort of theme for ABC 7’s newscast.

NBC's affiliate in Albany, NY, WNYT used Edd's theme from 1997-2004.
For every fan of Chuck Scarborough, and all of the WNBC New York people like myself...

This shit is gangsta!
I remember WNBC had this theme from mid 90s all the way to 2008 before NBC O&O’s decided to go in a different direction with their opening theme
This also was used on WSTM in Syracuse, NY
I have one of the original samplers of this theme, before it had a name!

Wasn't this from the NBC Ku-Band feeds?

WNBC news theme...
Sounds like a TPIR cue!!
And I'm thinking this borrowed from the UPN 9 news theme which came right before the September 1995 graphics.
