Another way of easily seating the long bolt through the air filter housing is to put one or two fingers up the hose opening on the cover on the RHS. That way you can easily guide the end of the long nut into position.

Hi Mick, likely to be a bad battery connection. remove both leads starting with the negative, clean the connections with some abrasive paper and then re attach leads, positive first. Then check the negative lead where it connects to the gearbox breather bolt. If the problem persists check the starter relay undertone gas tank; you should be able to hear/feel a faint click from the relay when you push the starter button. Check the relay connector block connections, look carefully for corroding wires on individual terminals going into the connector block. Once you are satisfied here then start to consider the starter motor. Good luck

@@motophoenix5951 hi there I've done what you said there are only 2 coils under the tank of which the earth from the battery is connected to one of them I bought a new battery for the bike is it possible they can come needing charge because this seems to need some regards mick

@@shingerz I was referring to the starter circuit relay, not the ignition coils. The battery earth should be connected to the gearbox breather bolt. Do you have a workshop manual; sounds like you need one. haynes.com/en-gb/bmw/r807/1978-1980

Hi. Great and informative video. I have a 1980 R80/7 that needs a new starter motor. It has the Bosch at present and taking it from your video the nipon is a direct replacement? If so from where is it available. Regards Martin

In the UK Motorworks supply them. www.motorworks.co.uk/vlive/Shop/Parts.php?T=5&NU=15&M=20&Ct=IA&SbCt=BA_15_20_IA_45
There is a choice of two, make sure you pick the right one.
