Great video! just swapped my dead bosch for the smaller vallejo starter. Had to swap out one of the bolts and install it from the opposite side. My r100s started right up! Thanks soooo much!
I will if and when I can. I don’t work, so I only post videos of repairs I do on either my own or friends bikes, as and when. Nevertheless, I shall bear it in mind.
Thank You very much Moto Phoenix ! Your videos are simply what every BMW fan needs! I'm the proud owner of a '82 R100CS and, since I bought it in 1987, I've been experiencing starting "problems" if the battery wasn't at least at 80% (and I'm lucky it's never really cold down here in Sardinia !). Now, with a new Yuasa 30Ah battery, and a complete check of all the electrical connections, I'm sure my R100CS needs (and deserves) a much more efficient starter than the weak stock Bosch. I appreciate your suggestion for the replacement with the (Nippon)-Denso starter. Can you help me and indicate the Code No. of Denso starter ? I would like to order exactly what you installed in your video. Thank You again and, please, keep going with your great videos!
Hi Francesco, thank you for your kind complement. I don't know where you buy your spare parts from, but I have checked with my supplier Motorworks and they list the ND replacement you need under this part number ELA4467. I have also attached a link to the page on their website. www.motorworks.co.uk/vlive/Shop/Parts.php?T=5&NU=15&M=20&Ct=IA&SbCt=BA_15_20_IA_45 If you use this supplier, make sure you choose the correct motor for your model, as there are 2 ND starter motors listed on the page I have attached. If you have a supplier you wish to use nearer to you, you just need to ensure that the motor comes with a 9 tooth pinion. All the best, Guy
Thank You very much again ! I followed all your instructions and I'm very satisfied by the results. I purchased the 9 tooth pinion starter motor from Motorworks. They sent it to me very, very quickly (in only five working days!) and today I replaced the old Bosch starter with the new Nippondenso. It's simply fantastic and what I expected! Thank you Guy and ... God save Moto Phoenix !
FRANCESCO CORONA, excellent.Yes Motorworks provide a good service. And those starters are superb, I have had mine in daily use for years. Never had any problems. All the best, Guy
Robert Fleischer aka Snowbum, responded to me with the following comment. I thought I would relay it to viewers. The upgraded Valeo's, with the clips for the magnet structure, are OK....and, at least in the USA, are much cheaper, and seem to hold up just fine over lots of miles. There can be interference problems when fitting a Denso or Valeo starter to a bike that previously from the BMW factory had a Bosch. If you have one of the engine blocks with the problem, you can cause problems unless you fix it, and the fix is pretty simple. You do NOT want to break the nose cone of your new starter. There can be a Denso interference problem too, and the below article describes the interference problems for both Denso and Valeo, with photos of both situations. You'll have to scan the entire article. See: bmwmotorcycletech.info/boschvaleostarter.htm Bosch, Denso, Valeo Starter motors and their fitment problems, for BMW… BMWMOTORCYCLETECH.INFO
Does anyone know how I can get the Nippon starter? The Valero -Everlast (ironically named) starter failed during a tour 😤 it's not easy for this 63 year old woman to push start my fully loaded RT in 90°f heat with 90%humidity
Thanks for the interesting videos and suggestions. I have a few questions to ask concerning Valeo and Bosch starters not capable of spinning the motor. It is possible to have and email to contact you? Thank you very much Loris
HI, thank you for your videos, they are very help full. Do you know where i could find the dimensions of a complete bolts set for a bmw r80rt 1985? Thanks
Fabien Guilloit I am unable to help with dimensions. I’m pretty sure Motor Works and/or Motobins in the UK sell replacement stainless bolt sets, if that helps. Otherwise you could try joining Airheads BMW Motorcycle Rider’s on Facebook, there are some very knowledgable people there who may be able to help advise you. Or you could try Snowbums web site: bmwmotorcycletech.info/technical-articles-list.htm
441rider hopefully they will, the later Valeo is supposed to be much better. I fitted one of those ND starters years ago. Brilliant! I think Motorrad Elektric in the States does them on your side.
Euro Motoelectrics sells their own branded EnduraLast starter - It's essentially the Valeo with a different label from what I understand and is $120 US vs $200 US.
The "Enduralast" is really misnamed. Mine failed once under warranty and then again after the warranty was expired. Leaving me stranded having to push start my fully loaded R100RT in 90°f 95% humidity central Illinois 😤

Great video im buying one of these bikes this Friday always liked them
Good vids. But can you please give us a video on how to remove a fairing and the tank on an R100RT or R80RT or RS?

What are the model numbers for the starter motors that are compatible with a bmw r80 1988?

I have the valeo, hope it's magnets stay put. All inquire about the nipon starter alternative.
