At Thru-hike Prep: How to Make Your Own DIY Water Bottle Hose From A Bladder // SmartWater LifeWTR

- I searched UA-cam after seeing a comment or two in some AT groups I'm in about making your own water hose from a bladder without having to purchase one from a kit. After watching a couple videos, (and I will link to the one I found the most useful), I made my own, but with a few modifications at the end to prevent leaking. I've had several comments and questions about how to do this so here is the how-to video to answer those questions!

Going on 21 years in the plumbing industry, you gave me a few ideas to perfect this type of setup🤔 maybe by the time time you get further into VA closer to SNP... I'll have perfected it by then and can run out some food for you and what tramily your with and gift you with an upgraded/hiker freindly replacement, lol. And I'm still sold on the idea of your doggie carrier collaborations after your done!👐
Right?! On both accounts! Totally planning to reach out to some companies to see if there's anything I can do to help them design something for other people who would like to hike with their dogs and carry them, not even necessarily through hike although of course there's that, but just longer day hikes and backpacking trips! To do this that's better than the option I have. I know they sell them on Amazon but I talk to other people who still have this little problem with the leaking, if not right away, it comes up on trail.... So yeah, figure it out and hit me up when I get near Shenandoah lol! 😂🥾
You are the Heloise of backpacking.
Lol had to Google that! Thank you! 🥰🙌😂
You may have to blow air back into the bottle after drinking some water; otherwise the bottle will start to collapse under the partial vacuum you created by removing some of the water.
Awesome hiker hack. Hiking with Braids did something similar with 1/4" rubbing when she hiked the AT🌲👍
Oh cool! I've watched her videos but didn't even realize that! 💦🙌
@@travelingwithtonya She got the tubing at home depot. Clear vinyl tubing. I bought some myself and use it. My friends poke fun at me and say it looks like I'm drinking from a hamster bottle🤣 I don't care I still like using it
Buy another cap that is not ruined by melting it or cutting it. Then use a pair of needle nose pliers to pull the tube through it. It takes a little bit of work. But when you do that you will never have a leak. It is rubber so it will seal its self
Im definitely trying
Should work well for you. Good job !
Thanks!! I think it will now. 💦🙌
I just bought two of those same waters.. 😆 cool..
Let me know if you decide to make the hose and how it works out for you! 💦🙌
You may already know this, but you can purchase Smart Water flip top sports caps from Gossamer Gear. The cost is $5 for a set of two. It may, however, be cheaper to simply buy the bottled water with sports caps. Anyway, thanks for the video.
Lol I did see that! Yup, cheaper to buy the water bottle lol 💦
Is the water proof tape food grade because the one on the inside. I would ask at home Depot about silicone for the outside.
Honestly don't know, and LOL probably not? I actually do have some silicone on hand and I considered using that but it clearly says not to ingest it so I went with the tape. Considering the water should 99% be coming just from the water bottle through the tube to the bite valve I'm not too concerned about the little bit of tape around the inner area that's really just holding the rubber bands in place to the tube. But if you are looking into doing this and are concerned about it, then yes I would ask someone at a hardware store if there's a better option. ☺️👍💦
@@travelingwithtonya if your out in freezing weather your tube will freeze. When your hiking the tape and rubber bands are going to be in water all the time. I would try putting silicone on outside and see if you need anything on inside.
@@garyoakman6187 just like hiking with a bladder and a tube, if it's below freezing, you hike with the tube down your shirt sleeve to keep it warm. The rubber band is inside the cap and isn't going to be getting wet because the water is inside the tube, not hitting the rubber band, but if it DOES get wet... it's rubber lol. The only way the tape on the exterior is getting wet is if it's raining, which is where hopefully the waterproof part of the tape will come into play... and if I have to retape it during the trail then I will.
