Awesome list of pros and cons. Just got one on my SH Forester. I reckon it’s going to stay on all year :)

Thanks! That's also the choice I made 😁

I just took my RTT off the car. It not really compares to the Foz since it is a hardshell. Was up there for 2 years now it needs some love, since aluminium is also prone to corrosion and this is something I will need to address in the spring. Love the pros and cons of the video! Thank you Jordan!

Thanks Martin! Good move taking care of the RTT, they are so expensive ahaha

Great topic! Fuel consumption: driving at lower speeds improves the fun of driving 😂and saves fuel. Wear and tear on the cover: use another pvc cover over the stock one. It will make the rtt less desirable for "interested" people and it will protect the rtt against the elements. Works for hard shells also.

That's a good idea. You also make a point about driving slower! It's definitely something I do since the foz is loaded, no sway bars... I enjoy the trip much better! When I'm on a trip I'm not in a hurry anyway...

@@ALNSMOVERLAND one more thing: if you unmount the ladder for the longer periods in between camping trips, this can improve saving fuel even more. 😂

Awesome to see how it’s worked out for you. Seems like the #1 risk is water intrusion into the tent. Keeping it sealed up (but also breathable) would be important! Very cool Jordan.
I recently got a RTT and I have to remove it regularly. Thankfully I do have a garage and I spent a ton of time building a hoist system. I made a vid that will be on my channel in a week or so to show what I did. 🤘

Can't wait to see your hoist system! It's something I always wanted to do ahaha

On a whim (because I'm an excited idiot) I was going to purchase a RTT this weekend because there's a great sale Roofnest. Honestly, I didn't think about any of this. I also live in a crap apartment right now and would have no way to get it off by myself let alone store it. I'm really disappointed but thankful I saw this video

I built my roofrack to be just a bit wider than the car and inset the gear a few inches so the sides of the rack act like rub rails/sliders for tree limbs and such. Best thing about the extra width is I can use the lift at the shop to lift off the rack when not in use. Now to finish welding up the trailer using the rear subframe and suspension leftover from a WRX swap which the rack can be mounted on top of.

Hello Jonah & Lisa - thank you for your review - here in South Australia (SA) I drive a GT Forester with a post Covid 23Zero Stealth (low profile) RFT with blackout technology for those late sleep-ins - we have a Mediterranean climate here in SA and I remember solo cycling through southern France which seems to have a similar climate but I don’t now what Burgundy’s climate is like - this means that drying out the tent is good here and no mould appearing - I have my RFT suspended above using the garage rafters then simply lower it using ratchet straps - my fuel economy is 20 percent better without the RFT - we have possums here which have been eating my RFT cover so I don’t leave out when camping but the damage is so bad I will have to replace it.

Ahaha possum eating the cover, it's definitely not a problem we have here!
Drying out is very important and sadly in the North of France it's not always to do it quickly...

I kept my howling moon rtt on my rover year round in the pacific northwest for 10 years never had condensation or mold issues. Every spring when opened for the first time it was good to go. I tried a tepui for my trailer i sold it after the first season after replacing the cover once. Good south african expedition grade 4 season tent is worth it over a lot of the others if you intend to use it hard and keep it in the weather year round. Otherwise, may not be worth the cost. All depends on your requirements.

The RTT on a trailer is a good option too! The trailer is ready for the adventure en you can store the entire trailer inside when you need 👍

Great video Jordan, it’s something I’m thinking about as I’ve just bought a Subaru Outback and wondered if I should leave the rooftop tent on or not. I’m going on a trip in two weeks and will be using the tent but in two months I’m traveling to Disneyland Paris from U.K. and was thinking of taking it back off due to weight and MPG.

    • @ALNSMOVERLAND
      @ALNSMOVERLAND  Рік тому +1

Glad it helped a bit! If you're not gonna use it during your trip, it's definitely better to remove it. Enjoy Disneyland Paris 😁

@@ALNSMOVERLAND Yes it’s coming off for sure as when I called Disney it seemed to be a problem me having it on the roof for the Euro tunnel saying I might have to pay an additional fee and even change the dates as I might be booked for taller vehicles.

I have to replace the travel cover every couple years but the tent has fared well. MIne is on a trailer so not being driven everyday but it stays out in the weather 24/7.

"KEEPING YOUR ROOF TOP TENT ALL YEAR ROUND ON YOUR VEHICLE" - I'm gonna save myself - and maybe others - from 16 minutes of my life wasted.
IT'S A STUPID IDEA - unless you like wasting fuel. Mount the thing when you're actually going to use it.

To each their own. They are pros and they are cons about doing that so maybe let people decide for themselves 😉
