Absolutely a great demonstration! My husband watched this and hurried out to his shed to install his pull rope! Every detail makes it simple enough...I could have installed this!
I've always had trouble replacing starter ropes. After watching this video, I better understand how to do it and I hope for the best. Thanks for making this.
Thanks for making and posting this video!!! It's great to see what to expect when disassembling something, if you've never done it before. Your other videos helped me rebuild the carb (Thanks for that too). It was a bummer to pull the starter cord right off on the first pull after all that hard work. But your vid got me fixed back up right away. Gave my hand me down tiller new life. Thanks!!
My - That's a vintage unit. Within just a few years, Briggs began making that starter case out of one stamped piece - no removable eyelet, bent-over sheet metal spool retaining tabs - a real PITA. This one is lovely - everything unscrews neatly.
An easily overlooked step is not noticing the 12'o'clock triangle mark that is on one of the 4 corners of the starter clutch's shank on all horizontal engines. With it at the TOP,it insures that you will not have to pull hardly any rope out before one of the clutch's ball bearings takes hold.(No rope loss..,no sore shoulder)
Great video!!!! 6 stars. Hey Don, how do you know what size cord to use? I've seen several different thicknesses. Thanks for the great job that u always do.
Man I just had to do this to my roto tiller this morning after I broke the starter rope. I wish I had watched this video instead of doing it on my own. It took me 4 tries to wind the spring and put it in the housing without unbolting the two halves. Way harder than necessary!
grouse work Donny mate cheers from Australia 🐨🐑🌏 to your area in Canada and that Toro Roto Garden Tiller looks like a older model to me maybe late 1980s to me from my view but yeah i could be wrong.
Your videos are very informative. Your production quality is great! There are many videos on UA-cam with the same information, but there camera work is horrible. The videos are too dark, the camera is moving way to fast or they are out of focus when trying to show closeups. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for the video. We are about to try this on our Briggs and Stratton motor in our wood chipper since the rope broke. Are there any things that you think we should be aware of that could ruin the motor or be unsafe as we attempt to fix it?
OH, man I could save you most of that work!! Once the housing is off the motor, fully pull the rope out of the housing. Be prepared with a clamp to secure the wheel so the spring doesn't re-spool the rope. Now push (not pull) on the rope to force the knotted end out of the wheel. Cut the knot and throw away the old rope. Carefully push the new rope through the outside hole on the housing and thread it into the hole in the spinwheel and push it until it appears in the hole where the knotted end had been. Using a needle nose pliers or safety pin, pull the end of the rope out of the hole. Proceed with tying and melting, etc. This would be a good time to see that the spring is as tight as it can be before reattaching the rope.
Great video. Any advice on how to remove the white plastic pulley the rope goes around. Just acquired one of those & popped the little tab off of the house thats beside the pull handle & lost the little piece down in there.
great video , i wondered if you could help me, do you know what the factory setting is for the carb please, as i think the previous owner has messed about with mine and when i got it running it was bogging down, so i just wanted it to back to factory setting and start again if i have to alter it to get it to run sweet . if you can help it would be great , thanks in advance
My tiller is a yard pro , it's pretty old , 5 h.p. , it's doing the same thing , I don't think it's as old as this one . I bought it in the early to mid. 90's I think . I believe my starter is a little different . Maybe you have another video on it .
Help! I know this video is old but I have a 7hp Briggs that looks like this. It needs a new pull cord. It’s currently brittle. Is this the same procedure or how many feet of rope should it take? I’d love if you could respond. Thank you.
Hi donyboy73, love your videos! I have an engine where the ratchet pawls broke, so I'll be doing that repair. However, I noticed that the rope didn't always retract all the way. Is this due to the spring? On this job you replaced the rope though the problem seemed to be the same as mine, the rope not retracting. What should I do?
Would you happen to know what size bolts hold the cowling onto the motor? I acquired and old tiller with the same motor but the housing was removed already and i have no idea what size bolts go on there.
In the same predicament as you, but they should be quarter inch bolts maybe 3/4 of an inch long half inch don’t take much to thread them in use lock washer
Hi, I asked GardenFork about my Briggs and Stratton lawn mower, and he said I should try you. He thinks my troubles may be with Recoil Spring. Pull start will not pull out at all. Do you a video about this?

+Dolores Hyde thanks for watching, make sure you are subscribed

Excellent video, feel confident now to sort this. Thanks donyboy73.
Great tutorial. Im taking a small engines class and this is one of the problems on my 1974 briggs
Your videos are very informative. Thanks for all the tips and techniques!
Nice job of giving very detailed instructions with video.
@snaponjohn100 liquid wrench and penetrating oil. i also use the penetrating oil as quick start
yes i am aware but i try to make my video for the novice to be able to do it, so far the feedback is good
Very nice... just the facts, good quality, and very helpful. Thanks
Thank you!! I should have watched this first. back to the garage!
Very helpful and kept simple. Thankyou.
@snaponjohn100 u use a size that will allow the cord to go back in all the way. usually a 4.5 to 5.5 # for this engine
@2strokeengine made especially for pull cord, u can buy it by the foot at a small engine shop. i sell some here in my shop
Thank you for the video well done !
@TheEmokid423 might be the starter clutch on the flywheel, sometimes spraying wd 40 in the small hole on top will make it return
What so the rope will retract back in
@pivotboy63 tighten the spring if it won't go in all the way
Thanks, Don. I will pick some up.
great job dony!
thank you very much very hands on awesome video
So porfekt donyboy

about 3 feet and wind it about 4 times or until desired tension
Cool repair video dude ! thumbs up !

informative vid !. i have a tecumseh recoil to do. hopefully its similar.

Thanks for the refresher course!

How long of cord do you put back on the recoil? And how many times does it need to be winded? Great videos
@Ixta4521 new or used, i think i have a used one

Is your Liquid Wrench, that u always use, penetrating oil or silicone?
I have that tiller too!!!
that might help me on my go cart
Hello, any videos or idea how to fix a pull cord on a snowbird s-225?
When I replaced mine i just put a pair of vise-grips on the starter and just fed the rope in.

so if it wont go in all the way by itself do you have to replace the cord or just tighten the spring?
The bolts that hold that hold the housing to the engine are 1/4” bolts
I should've known to lubricate it and tighten the rope 1 revolution! This technique works on basically all B & S motors, I think?
That looks like one of the easier recoils to work on. Never seen it before. I used to have an older engine like that, but someone stole it :(

You should make a video of how to replace to spring because my motor wont pull the rope back in and I cant fimd how to replace it.
Hallo. Ich möchte wissen ob die Motor ist 2 takt oder 4 takt?
Danke.
do you you were i could buy that recoil assembly??
Do you have its model number? I need it for sears to get tune up kit

+Betsy Cambareri a new rope sometimes helps if the old one is stiff, you may need to make the spring tighter
+donyboy73 , thanks for your reply! Do you have a video on how to tighten or replace the spring?
+Betsy Cambareri not yet but this vid should give you a good idea how to tighten it ua-cam.com/video/LaA_rdKlmEs/v-deo.html
+donyboy73 Awesome, thank you!
Hi Dony I have this same motor on an old tiller. I need help winding the spring. Any tips on this particular 5hp starter?
video in the works but will be a while before upload
What is the Liquid Wrench?
i have that same engine and the cord hangs also
Did you say how long to make the cord? If so, I missed it.
What is the replacement part number on this?? Thanks.
Would you happen to know what size bolts hold the cowling onto the motor? I acquired and old tiller with the same motor but the housing was removed already and i have no idea what size bolts go on there.

+Christopher M hi, you would have to do a search on my channel page, yes it does sound like the recoil spring
What is the parts number for the whole mechanism?
i wish my old 5hp would start and run like that :(
@donyboy73 ill take it if you dont mind
Thats newer than my 190702 briggs
Oh Canada, i wish you were my home and native land. :-)
@donyboy73 if you dont mind ill buy it from you
Skinny replacement cords don't hold up for very long.
its not a cowling, its a fly wheel cover
Great job
Haha! how do you get 26 dislikes on a good video .
Go figure !
other shops that are crooks
Too many experts in the field 😂
@Ixta4521 send me ur email and i'll send u some pics
