Hahahahaha that intro got me laughing so hard, when that witcher song came I died 🤣🤣 Edit: Great video as usual, really good content! Love the long vids!
Really enjoyed this talk. It puts a good perspective on cursing. Interesting that you mention the Mari Lwyd, the Horse that was thrown out of the Stable when Mary and Joseph were searching for somewhere to give birth to the more prestigious child Jesus, so the story goes. Ever since she roams the earth looking for somewhere to give birth to her colt. Sometimes the head is buried for a year, and only dug up at Christmas, it is a symbolic death and rebirth of the Underworld Goddess. Hugh Lupton wrote a lovely song that goes, The mare-headedd queen The Mari-Lwyd I was mother of all the herds Ten thousand years my shining foals Bridled with starlight Saddled with gold Leapt the divide Between living and dead Quickened the year With each toss of the head Galloped the deep of beauty And never grew old Let me in! And now I am nightmare I am rattling womb The Uffington wraith I’ve become Forced into darkness You’ve made me a fiend Bridled with shadow Saddled with scream From window to window Traversing the night My face in your glass In a shudder of light Seeking that deep of welcome Befitting a Queen Let me in once again Let me in!

Always learn so much from your videos. Your archeological and modern knowledge does not out of hand cast aside magic or pagan faith, as it does with others. And again thank you for the passing of knowledge.
Isn't it ironic? Out of fear of curses they created curses, brilliant. Thank you for another. Wonderful video I agree with you on. Certain aspects. I think you a quite right to refuse to teach people how to curse.
I never thought about it before but it does sound plausible that direct cursing someone is a much later concept. Also given the importance of riddles, kennings and such in the Norse-Germanic cultures. But I must find and master this uncontrollable farting curse. Sounds like a toot to me! Tack för en intressant video!
Speaking of mysteries, what happen to what I thought I saw on your palm back a couple of videos back? Hmmm 🤔 This was a great video with very interesting content. I very much missed mr Thorstein, please give him a big hug and good kiss for me.💋
Good day to you and enjoy this video! Don't know if this makes you feel any good but I've done archaeological work while raining and there was mud all over the place, cold and wet, quite uncomfortable; in a way, I feel you! :p
Funny thing, the day after I saw this video, my Icelandic friend spoke of modern nidstangs - and how one farmer had put up one with a fish head on top, turned towards his neighbor. Police had to consult old sources to decipher under what law code to classify the threat as!
I think i got an explanation for Thorr's association with runes: Practicing shamanic journeying, i once encountered a Svartalf, and he told me that to activate a rune, or to "force" your magical will upon the world through runes, they can be battered into the object with a literal hammer or your fist, to symbolize the durable nature of runic spells. So Thorr as bearer of a metaphysical hammer and representation of passion and force would be a good god to evoke here.
What's interesting about that end bit: my parents were (one still is) members of a fundamentalist Christian sect (cult) and my mom wouldn't let me or my brother have a hobby horse. She never explained why, just said it was evil and smacked me for asking more questions. It makes sense now. Doesn't justify the smacking, but it makes sense.
This is actually brilliant. It‘s not the cursers fault when the cursed does something stupid 🤔 Edit: Uncontrollable farting 🤣 Increase of curses with Christianity - this expains a lot, especially that the curses were directly directed to a special person, not as a general warning anymore. It is shifting the ill intentions from formerly the one who decides to do something bad to the one who curses the other person.

great job Arith! Could you offer your take on Saami shamanisim? The Saami were feared by the Church for their ability to send "SHOTS" towards someone they wanted to harm
could you make a video about the triskelion? or did you already make a video im not aware of ? im a new subscriber but i already love your videos they are super interesting. much love from austria
Yeah lot of efforts/rituals went into making of that stone and it was blessed by the Thor himself. Basically to guard against grave robbers and necromancers.
Is there any real linguistic connection between the words "Warlock" and "varðlokkur" . just curious, not looking to make a connection that does not exist which happens sometimes with linguistics.
I have just watched Ragnarok on Netflix and I have a question that in Norse mythology, Has ragnarok occur yet? or It will occur in the future? If it has occured already then all gods must died already right? I am in Thailand and its hard to find the information about it.
I'm curious about the warlocks, I'm wondering if the word _war_ is some kind of origin for shutting away. Knot magic ties something into the knots, locking it away, so I'm wondering if it is related to the word _ward_ , keeping something safe by shutting it away or warning people off. Interested in the etmology there. Makes sense about the coming of Christianity changing old 'folk' beliefs, with the middle ages and the increase of knowledge and expansion of people's world and it's cultural absorption of new knowledge. Was surprised about the lateness of curses. When trying to find out about runes there is so much rubbish out there it's hard to know what to read. Sorry, your videos provoke so many questions XD Mari llwydd takes place literally outside my front door, it brings luck!
Great to see my hero again but he's wearing the same sweater as you Arith. Do you share clothes? I tried waving my wand at a girl and was arrested. Maybe I had the wrong runes?
You have keen eyes my friend, indeed we share clothes because we can't afford new and fancy ones. Our wardrobe is quite dull. Well, nowadays waving one's wand in public can cause some trouble :/
Hi Arith, I wrote you not long ago asking if you knew of any runes that were simply horizontal lines because I saw some at the giants causeway in northern ireland that I don't think are natural. Thurisas rune could fit what I have seen because it would be 3d as it's carved into the face of the hexagonal columns.. and it also represents giants and destruction which makes absolute sense for that place.. I'd love to get a picture to you to see what you think...
I've a question.. do you have a video of (all) the seperate runes, or only 16.. anyway thnks for the vids, I bingewatch your channel, such great content!
Dr. Jackson Crawford is a professor who specializes in the Old Norse language. His channel has several excellent videos regarding runes. He explains both Elder and Younger Futhark in detail.
Cordialement M
It's from the Younger Futhark; it's called hagall, meaning "hail" - often symbolizing destruction to crops, and thus famine. In writing it represents the "h" sound. Its predecessor in the Elder Futhark was called hagalaz, which also meant "hail"(this is a good example of a typical linguistic transition from Proto-Germanic to Old Norse) and stood for the same sound. However, the shape of the Elder rune was quite different: it closely resembled a capital "N".
Surely our pagan ancestors saw no difference in the “curses“ or “spells” of the early protestants when engaged in “prayer“... this must have not only seemed strange to them, but also extremely evil that it created a demand for updated and modernized pagan spells, or prayer.
So Runic Curses were originally warnings and in breaking them the offender brought misfortune upon themselves as the runes were consecrated by a god. Never a specified cause or unjust. Because they were meant to be seen on the stone the proto-norse wasn't meant to be done in secret, but so the offenders would know that their actions would bring consequences upon them and would essentially be telling Thor to do his worse. Does the runes themselves have power then?
As an occult scholar, I have to say, there's definately alot of subjectivity slipping into parts of this video. People in older times (in general) were FAR less squimish about killing people and curses - especially of the death dealing kind are ubiquitous in the ancient (and not so ancient world). Hence notions of cursing being tampering with superior forces and so on and essentially a modern invention, primerily traced to Wicca, who in turn imported most of its morality from Christianity (and certainly not from any unknown witch-cults that somehow nobody ever noticed for hundrends of years). Morality is not inherent in magick and I dislike inserting moral guideless and arguements on discussing the occult. It's fine for people to have morals and opinions to guide them but occult scholarship should be objective and not discuss morality except where the people using spells and practices held specific morals. Therefore, while it's fair to say that curses appear to be rather rare in the Nordic context they must have existed, as they are vaguely mentioned by Odin: "I know a sixth: it will save me if a man Cut runes on a sapling' s Roots With intent to harm; it turns the spell; The hater is harmed, not me." One explantation for the relative sparcity of curses could simply be, that magic is frowned up. In most sagas heroes are loathe to use any kind of magic which suggests this was viewed as 'unmanly', a notion consistent with the old Norse ethic as presented in the mythos. In later accounts we can surely infer curses must have existed as there is specific occult technology against them (this being during the medieval times and the oldest actual occult manuals we know of). Note also here that jsut because something is taboo in a specific socio-political context that doesn't mean people don't do it. In a Norse-specific example out protagonist contacts a seidmann to essential curse someone, even though the sources are pretty clear that it's taboo for men to practice seidr (I forget the name of the poem sadly). Another thing we need to take not of, is that the occult has always filled two specific niches. Firstly it's empowering and it's historical purpose has always been to empower people to solve their problems above all else. The second is that the occult has always been a liminal thing, flourishing in the outskirts of the societal norms, where society fails to provide solutions. In Viking age Scandinavia there's a socially and legally approved direct way to end someone you don't really like - you challenge him to a duel. This tradition is always described and having more binding power than actuall legal cases, hence there's a socially approved to way to kill someone you like - there's no need to resort to idirect ways to accomplish this feat.
Hi there. You know due to new laws and so on. We can not just take a horse and cut off its head.. Can I use an imetation horse head? like a fake one ,you know the one on a stick children play with.?
The Stentoften stone is not written in the Old Norse language (norrænt mál) it is written in the Proto-Germanic language. (I the runes master : hiding powerful runes here : Irresistible with anger : death is the one that breaks this memorial)
my patrons are into very weird stuff, and I'm afraid they came to the right place

Galloped the deep of beauty
And never grew old
Let me in!
And now I am nightmare
I am rattling womb
The Uffington wraith I’ve become
Forced into darkness
You’ve made me a fiend
Bridled with shadow
Saddled with scream
From window to window
Traversing the night
My face in your glass
In a shudder of light
Seeking that deep of welcome
Befitting a Queen
Let me in once again
Let me in!

Thank you Arith. The context you offer for cursing and how it was done is amazing. Very much appreciated!
Lots of great information, putting it into historical context too.
So that's where this idea of White Magic versus Black Magic got started... We have the Church to thank for all of it.

There is also a somewhat similarity between Canaanite letters and runes, indicating their much older origin.

The Klingons would love that whole bit about nidstang and (honor).

Olá! Lembro-me que queria um video sobre Nidstang, pois aqui está :p hehe
Is that where the term "more women then i could shake a stick at !" came from ?

The Vikings greatly feared the Sammi for their curses.
could you make a video about the triskelion? or did you already make a video im not aware of ? im a new subscriber but i already love your videos they are super interesting. much love from austria
Hullo and welcome! Yes i did speak about it on another video indeed: search for "Viking Religious Symbols". I think that's the one. Cheers!
10:35 apparently, someone's headstone getting carried off was a problem back in the day
Yeah lot of efforts/rituals went into making of that stone and it was blessed by the Thor himself. Basically to guard against grave robbers and necromancers.
MR THORSTEIN!!!!!! YAY HE'S BACK
Is a wonderful and sweet creature! 😀
It's my understanding that the term "Warlock" is a Scots bastardization of the term "Vardlokkur" ie "Spirit caller". Opinion ???
Laughing my ass off Thorstein.
What a great video on Runics
You and Thorstein should play music together and jam

How do you feel about people getting runes tattooed on themselves???
I understand the curses were more of a deterrent to protect of special olaces.Should the warning be in old Norse or in any langusge?
I believe its bot as important as the breath you give them to activate them
The 19th century Protestant bit sounds a bit similar to Pennsylvania Dutch counter/cursing.
Like "Hex signs" on barns.

WHAT ANIMAL DO U HAVE ON UR ARMRING IM A NERD FOR THAT, MINES A SNAKE
So what was the rune you had as the cover for the video ?
A bindrune I've created which signifies "Nidstang" (not the word) as a curse-pole.
That FRIGGin intro hahahaha
Edit: anyone know what that rune (vertical line with the x overlapping it) means? Or its name
Nauthiz
oh, sorry you mean an "x" through it bot it is crossed - ignore this
Surely our pagan ancestors saw no difference in the “curses“ or “spells” of the early protestants when engaged in “prayer“... this must have not only seemed strange to them, but also extremely evil that it created a demand for updated and modernized pagan spells, or prayer.
Pagans saw Catholics first
So Runic Curses were originally warnings and in breaking them the offender brought misfortune upon themselves as the runes were consecrated by a god. Never a specified cause or unjust. Because they were meant to be seen on the stone the proto-norse wasn't meant to be done in secret, but so the offenders would know that their actions would bring consequences upon them and would essentially be telling Thor to do his worse. Does the runes themselves have power then?
Hi, Mr. Arith Harger, can you give me your contact so that I can chat with you more about your subject on rune curses?
Therefore, while it's fair to say that curses appear to be rather rare in the Nordic context they must have existed, as they are vaguely mentioned by Odin:
"I know a sixth:
it will save me if a man
Cut runes on a sapling' s Roots
With intent to harm; it turns the spell;
The hater is harmed, not me."
One explantation for the relative sparcity of curses could simply be, that magic is frowned up. This tradition is always described and having more binding power than actuall legal cases, hence there's a socially approved to way to kill someone you like - there's no need to resort to idirect ways to accomplish this feat.
anyone else thought of the Brand of Sacrifice from Berserk ? when they saw the thumbnail xD

The Stentoften stone is not written in the Old Norse language (norrænt mál) it is written in the Proto-Germanic language. (I the runes master : hiding powerful runes here : Irresistible with anger : death is the one that breaks this memorial)
I didn't say it was Old Norse. I said it was proto-norse
