Yes exactly, in Captain Phillips shoes I would have gone 600 miles from the coast and none of this would have happened. However i'm glad he did, because it shed light on a huge problem in Somalia, which I believe does not happen anymore. Also help spawn a new career for an African actor.

Robert Sanchez The captain knew that he was treading near dangerous waters, yet still decided to go that why because he wanted a shorter route. Thus, the boat got attacked by pirates. He could have prevented the whole thing, but decided to go for the short route. Pretty stupid imo. Still, a good movie though.
Funny thing is I just rewatched the movie after hearing about this following the first time I saw it, and it seems to obviously show fairly early on in the movie Cpt Phillips reading piracy warning e-mails. Obviously he didn't change course in the movie after reading them. Also, in the movie, he didn't give himself up. He was clocked from behind and locked inside the lifeboat. I really don't understand why so many people are talking like they saw a completely different movie. I don't think they lied or romanticized about anything. Maybe just didn't elaborate on everything.

The movie did romanticize the situation. The captain the movie saw the email without a choice but to cross the territory, and he was portrayed as this selfless man, patient and smart mature man, which based on the accusation he was non of. In reality, this ship was the first ship he went on without a weapon, and he still ignored the email before going into the pirate territory. Unlike in the movies, he made mistakes, and those mistakes caused the whole crew to be in a potentially dangerous situation.

Same thing in the movie and real life: He saw the emails and didn't do a thing, didn't tell the crew about the threat, didn't change his course. He only did a drill on every possible situations. At the same time, that drill became a real situation as they were parites after them. You can see in the movie, some crew members saying they don't have any weapons, they proposed the captain to change course and he didn't want to. In the movie, I didn't see him as selfless and patient. He wasn't. Again, in the movie, it is said : ''The job is to move the cargo as fast as possible'', that is not a selfless and patient person. It's someone who just wants to get the job done and that's it. Also, what Richard Phillips said, they could've been at 600 miles or 1200 miles from Somalia, it was a matter of when, not if. He's right, pirates are ready to travel till they can find a boat, they know the ocean too. It's because of lots of these situations that some cargos have weapons, are being escorted, there's a military presence sometime, on the cargos and a lot more of surveillance in the sea and ocean. If it wasn't the Maersk Alabama, it would've been another one no matter how far the next cargo or boat would've been from the coast.

Captain Phillips did not give himself up. The pirates took him for ransom. He didn't throw himself into the lifeboat. The pirates shut the lifeboat door while Captain Phillips was showing them how to use levers, etc. Mr. Perry just seems bitter and twisted that he wasn't part of the hero's welcome. That's disgusting that those crew members have the audacity to say Phillips "wanted" to be captured by pirates. They're just mad because they didn't get limelight and feel like their part in the whole thing was belittled. There's always one person that gets all the credit, it's just how it happens. He endured a helluva lot more than any of his crew did, so he at least deserves some recognition.

It's possible that the situation could've been worse if they were closer inshore or even further out. I admire this man for his honesty while his judgement was being picked apart under a microscope by the media, the crew & the rest of us who weren't there; hindsight is always 20/20. At no point did he claim to be a hero, instead he gave credit where credit was due to the US navy & to his crew (even though they've chosen to speak against him & his choices). I just watched the movie and I have to say it was amazing! No matter if Captain Phillips is a hero or not the film is still thrilling and Tom Hanks and everyone involved in it were flawless.
I just watched the film, and I've read the interviews and accounts, and it's pretty clear that ending up on the lifeboat wasn't the Captain's plan (if he even had a plan beyond "not getting shot"). He wasn't "giving himself up." Also, his reasons for not changing course were as valid as anybody's ever were for anything. He wasn't WRONG, he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, after making the best choices he could. If someone wants to blame him for the whole situation, that's fair. If someone wants to call him a hero, that's also fair. In the words of Mal Reynolds, "everybody who's ever had a statue made of them was a sonofabitch from somebody's point of view."

Captain Phillips did as good of a job as he could do. Going out 300 miles more would've done no good because the pirates had a mothership behind them which carried enough fuel to travel that distance, and its not like pirates wouldnt go that far for a huge payday. And since they travel through those waters all the time, he probably gets those warnings all the time and was used to it. Secondly, him not locking the bridge when they boarded was reasonable too, they had guns they could easily open it why waste time on going to lock it and possibly get shot. None of his crew got hurt, they still delivered the merchandise and got the captain back alive. pretty damn good job if you ask me. His crew is just money hungry and jeolus

Its amazing how many people are taking the captain's side just because the movie was great and Tom Hanks played a really captivating character. The fact of the matter is still that the captain put him and his crew in imminent danger. His reckless decision to save money could've gotten them all killed if the pirates were triggerhappy. I loved the movie. But I must ask: Why didn't Phillips and his crew have weapons of their own? Is it a Maersk policy or something? True, the pirates had machine guns, but they were completely outnumbered! In the movie, there was this one scene where the crew captured one of the pirates and took his gun. I was saying to myself, "What are you waiting for? Shoot Him!"
If you look at the intel he had... the chart showing where piracy had happened, they were scattered all over the place. It literally didn't matter if they were 300, 600, 1000 miles out. I can understand why the captain said either way we were in the zone..staying 600 miles off Somali coast would add quite some time on the sea and does not necessarily reduce the risk since both ports are within 600 miles off Somali coast

He could've at least lessened the possibility of capable small craft vessels making up the extra 300 miles. By his logic it was better to lose an inch than save a mile.
I call bullshit on this. Even had he steered clear of that "area" that the agency warned him about, would it have guarunteed that Somali pirates wouldn't have boarded their vessel? Absolutely not. There are some pirates that have kept going straight into international trading supply lines even when frigates were firing rounds at them, look up some Navy pirate hunter documentaries. These guys don't follow or adhere to any "zone" they go for whatever ship is the easiest target, the fact is they were boarded, and the captain acted accordingly and bravely, thats IT. Those crewman have a good case but ultimately it doesn't discredit Phillips to the point where we can say, oh it was his fault that they got captured... absolutely not.
According to the crew, Phillips froze and didn't do shit. Also the fact that he was too close to the shore left his ship alone and exposed while other ships were protected by the navy. And Natsu was supposed to be the stupid one.

My opinion? He was stupid for going so close to the coast, but that doesn't change the fact that he pulled some pretty clever stunts to save his crew. He DID pretty much get them into the situation in the first place, but you have to keep in mind he also got them out.
I actually met Capt. Phillips at the port of Jacksonville when he was Capt. of the m/v Green Lake back around 1999, which was a ro/ro vessel carrying Toyotas that were discharged at our 8th st. Terminal. He was a hands on guy.
The point is, that was reckless behavior. There was a reason that he received 7 emails all telling to him to stay at least 600 miles offshore, that is a much safer distance. If he had been, the ship wouldn't have been hijacked.

I saw the movie and I've read a few articles on piracy in this part of the world. I think the lawsuits are unjustified. The entire region is unsafe. All of these men knew that. He makes a good point that being further out, say, 1200 miles would not guarantee safety by any means. Many ships have been hijacked before & since.Hostages are still being held from various ships. The crew isn't trained for combat. The company that owns the ships isn't just going to hand out weapons.
The ship was 240 miles away from shore. Phillips lied about the distance. Also it would take pirates multiple days to get to a ship that is 600 miles out which is enough time for the navy to intercept them.
Captain Phillips and everyone survived and Phillips came out the most damaged, the crew members that said this have no right in saying anything and have their lives to thank because of him

Okay so Captain Phillips ignores warnings from these authoritahs and goes on the same route anyway. They are 300 miles off the coast. I would think that's far enough. Anyway, Phillips and some of the crew gets found at the top of the ship. Phillips handles the situation and keeps the majority of the crew safe. Then, he gives up himself so that the rest of the crew would be safe. And they are trying to sue him. Yes, he ignored them, but I think the negative evens out with the positive. He ignored the emails, and he paid the price of getting captured, but he didn't let anyone else get captured. In fact, he threw himself into the lifeboat with these pirates instead of putting the crew in danger. It seems like people take advantage of suing, making something worse than it needs to be.

As for the real story, people have different motives for whatever version of the truth they give and it's too late after the incident to actually deduce the truth. I actually didn't get from the movie itself that he was giving himself up, apart from the one line 'we have to get them off the ship' he was portrayed more as a passenger to the situation in my opinion, only going with the pirates in order not to be shot himself.

The movie did romanticize the situation. The captain the movie saw the email without a choice but to cross the territory, and he was portrayed as this selfless man, patient and smart mature man, which based on the accusation he was non of. In reality, this ship was the first ship he went on without a weapon, and he still ignored the email before going into the pirate territory. Unlike in the movies, he made mistakes, and those mistakes caused the whole crew to be in a potentially dangerous situation.

Same thing in the movie and real life: He saw the emails and didn't do a thing, didn't tell the crew about the threat, didn't change his course. He only did a drill on every possible situations. You can see in the movie, some crew members saying they don't have any weapons, they proposed the captain to change course and he didn't want to. In the movie, I didn't see him as selfless and patient. He wasn't. Again, in the movie, it is said : ''The job is to move the cargo as fast as possible'', that is not a selfless and patient person. It's someone who just wants to get the job done and that's it.
Also, what Richard Phillips said, they could've been at 600 miles or 1200 miles from Somalia, it was a matter of when, not if. He's right, pirates are ready to travel till they can find a boat, they know the ocean too. It's because of lots of these situations that some cargos have weapons, are being escorted, there's a military presence sometime, on the cargos and a lot more of surveillance in the sea and ocean. If it wasn't the Maersk Alabama, it would've been another one no matter how far the next cargo or boat would've been from the coast.

That's disgusting that those crew members have the audacity to say Phillips "wanted" to be captured by pirates. They're just mad because they didn't get limelight and feel like their part in the whole thing was belittled. There's always one person that gets all the credit, it's just how it happens. Whether the Captain is a hero or acted reckless is irrelevant. Truth is, we will never know if 300 miles was enough of a distance or if 600 miles would have changed everything. It's possible that the situation could've been worse if they were closer inshore or even further out. I admire this man for his honesty while his judgement was being picked apart under a microscope by the media, the crew & the rest of us who weren't there; hindsight is always 20/20. At no point did he claim to be a hero, instead he gave credit where credit was due to the US navy & to his crew (even though they've chosen to speak against him & his choices). After his horrific ordeal he has even 'gotten back on the horse' and returned to the sea; which many wouldn't be able to do or would care to; after all, since the story broke, the media coverage, the book sales & now the movie are probably bringing in more than enough money to keep him & his family taken care of without needing an income forcing him to work. It's so easy for all of us to sit behind our keyboards & judge others, instead of trying to see the good.

But actually we do know. We know that the further off shore a ship is the less likely it is to be attacked by pirates. This is not complicated. Lets say you're a pirate that wants to attack a ship. You have a boat, but because you most likely live in a toilet of a country and you have very little money it's probably not a very seaworthy boat or a very big boat meaning that it's has a shorter operational range, meaning you can't go very far off shore without either running out of fuel or getting caught in a serious storm that will sink you. A pirate boat needs to be a fast boat in order to hunt down a moving ship going in the neighborhood of twenty knots. Very few pirates can afford a large seaworthy deep sea capable vessel that can run at sustained speeds in excess of 20 knots. Large vessels that operate at that speed burn huge amounts of fuel.
My point is that the vast majority of pirates are limited to vessels nearer to shore and for them, the nearer the better.
All you need to do to is a little internet research to gather names of ships that have been attacked by pirates and find out how far off shore they were. When you do that you will find that the vast majority of ships attacked by pirates were within sight of land. see Malaka Straights.
Now that I've explained this, I'm sure that almost anyone can understand the logic in what I've said here. Now you know that anyone who tells you that it isn't safer to stay farther offshore is lying to you.

I just watched the movie and I have to say it was amazing! No matter if Captain Phillips is a hero or not the film is still thrilling and Tom Hanks and everyone involved in it were flawless.

I just watched the film, and I've read the interviews and accounts, and it's pretty clear that ending up on the lifeboat wasn't the Captain's plan (if he even had a plan beyond "not getting shot"). He wasn't "giving himself up." Also, his reasons for not changing course were as valid as anybody's ever were for anything. He wasn't WRONG, he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, after making the best choices he could.
If someone wants to blame him for the whole situation, that's fair. If someone wants to call him a hero, that's also fair. In the words of Mal Reynolds, "everybody who's ever had a statue made of them was a sonofabitch from somebody's point of view."
The film is a film you donut, you cannot use it as evidence in an argument.

Going out 300 miles more would've done no good because the pirates had a mothership behind them which carried enough fuel to travel that distance, and its not like pirates wouldnt go that far for a huge payday. And since they travel through those waters all the time, he probably gets those warnings all the time and was used to it.
Secondly, him not locking the bridge when they boarded was reasonable too, they had guns they could easily open it why waste time on going to lock it and possibly get shot.
None of his crew got hurt, they still delivered the merchandise and got the captain back alive. pretty damn good job if you ask me.

Its amazing how many people are taking the captain's side just because the movie was great and Tom Hanks played a really captivating character. The fact of the matter is still that the captain put him and his crew in imminent danger. His reckless decision to save money could've gotten them all killed if the pirates were triggerhappy. The pirates could've taken any one of them hostage and not just the captain.
Every time you drive on the highway with a family member, shouldn’t you just as well be blamed for putting them at risk by picking the fast lane at every moment you’re not as patient on the road? How about every time you take a loved one out somewhere to eat in a town or city that has at least one or more articles online about victims that got robbed or killed at one point or another? I loved the movie. But I must ask: Why didn't Phillips and his crew have weapons of their own? Is it a Maersk policy or something? True, the pirates had machine guns, but they were completely outnumbered! In the movie, there was this one scene where the crew captured one of the pirates and took his gun. I was saying to myself, "What are you waiting for? Shoot Him!"

He could've at least lessened the possibility of capable small craft vessels making up the extra 300 miles. By his logic it was better to lose an inch than save a mile.
I call bullshit on this. Even had he steered clear of that "area" that the agency warned him about, would it have guarunteed that Somali pirates wouldn't have boarded their vessel? Absolutely not. There are some pirates that have kept going straight into international trading supply lines even when frigates were firing rounds at them, look up some Navy pirate hunter documentaries. These guys don't follow or adhere to any "zone" they go for whatever ship is the easiest target, the fact is they were boarded, and the captain acted accordingly and bravely, thats IT. Those crewman have a good case but ultimately it doesn't discredit Phillips to the point where we can say, oh it was his fault that they got captured... absolutely not.

My opinion? He was stupid for going so close to the coast, but that doesn't change the fact that he pulled some pretty clever stunts to save his crew. He DID pretty much get them into the situation in the first place, but you have to keep in mind he also got them out.
I actually met Capt. Phillips at the port of Jacksonville when he was Capt. of the m/v Green Lake back around 1999, which was a ro/ro vessel carrying Toyotas that were discharged at our 8th st. Terminal. He was a hands on guy.

The point is, that was reckless behavior. There was a reason that he received 7 emails all telling to him to stay at least 600 miles offshore, that is a much safer distance. If he had been, the ship wouldn't have been hijacked.

I saw the movie and I've read a few articles on piracy in this part of the world. I think the lawsuits are unjustified. The entire region is unsafe. All of these men knew that. He makes a good point that being further out, say, 1200 miles would not guarantee safety by any means. Many ships have been hijacked before & since.Hostages are still being held from various ships. The crew isn't trained for combat. The company that owns the ships isn't just going to hand out weapons.

The ship was 240 miles away from shore. Phillips lied about the distance. Also it would take pirates multiple days to get to a ship that is 600 miles out which is enough time for the navy to intercept them.

Okay so Captain Phillips ignores warnings from these authoritahs and goes on the same route anyway. They are 300 miles off the coast. I would think that's far enough. Anyway, Phillips and some of the crew gets found at the top of the ship. Phillips handles the situation and keeps the majority of the crew safe. Then, he gives up himself so that the rest of the crew would be safe. And they are trying to sue him. Yes, he ignored them, but I think the negative evens out with the positive. He ignored the emails, and he paid the price of getting captured, but he didn't let anyone else get captured. In fact, he threw himself into the lifeboat with these pirates instead of putting the crew in danger. It seems like people take advantage of suing, making something worse than it needs to be.

The movie was amazing, one of the best.
As for the real story, people have different motives for whatever version of the truth they give and it's too late after the incident to actually deduce the truth. It doesn't matter if the man was a "hero" or not, the fact is that it is an incredible story, no matter what the circumstances.

I actually didn't get from the movie itself that he was giving himself up, apart from the one line 'we have to get them off the ship' he was portrayed more as a passenger to the situation in my opinion, only going with the pirates in order not to be shot himself.
