I met Capt. Phillips when he was the Capt. of the m/v "Green Lake", a ro/ro ship at the port of Jacksonville, Fl. back in 1999 or 2000. We were the agent for the ship. He was a hands on Capt. and it was a real pleasure to help out the entire crew.
They flew him from "Africa" to Burlington, Vermont? This is why we have such a narrow view of the world. Where in Africa??? It's the second largest land mass in the world and they're putting it on the same scale and context as Burlington, Vermont.
That all depends on who you ask. Apparently he disregarded several emails telling him where to go and where to stay clear. Apparently some of his own crew don't exactly sing his high praises.
I had just watched the movie about Captain Phillips last night and it was quite dramatic and gripping. The hijacking of Phillips' cargo ship happened when I was 14 years old, just when I was starting high school.
@@kiawilliams5541That's not the reason. It's got to do with insurance coverage, the cost of training a crew in the proper use of firearms and in some cases, international maritime laws.
Not exactly. He had received messages warning him about pirate activity and suggesting a different route, however the Somalian pirates operated in such a large area that a diverted route would still cut through that territory and would have caused them to spend a lot more time in dangerous waters, though this question is still under debate
@@caderauen988 I believe the territory of Somali pirates spanned of the cost for about 1000 miles more or less, so a diversion of course, increasing the amount of time on waters, in mind with a Somali mothership containing refueling, would be of no difference. Captain Philips choose the most efficient and fastest route out of that territory, so I say his decision made no factor in the endangerment or not, give or take.
When people and their Family has been traumatized, they first thing they need to do is "Decompress"..... During that time they need quiet and calm... Even a phone ring or a doorbell can make a Panic Attack happen.
Aside from cheering this man's epic survival, like to hear that Massachusetts accent. "The cah in the pahk in the yahd" etc. I was born pretty much where "Jaws" was filmed, but lost the Cape Cod accent on the west coast. Anyway, great movie. Look at me, I'm the Captain now!
If you investigate further, the crew members said the movie did not depict it accurately there are many things in the movie that were not accurate, Captain Phillips actually ignored Maritime warnings that he should stay 600 or more miles from the coastline and that he put crew members in danger because he was determined to travel close to the coast line to save time and money at one point he was as close as 250 miles from the coast when the boat was taken hostage, others say he did not offer himself up to be shot instead of the crew members that was all fake for Hollywood as was other parts of the movie.
It's a movie.. what do you expect. They also didn't mention how the 30k went missing from the life raft after the rescue..they had to polygraph 2 navy seals lol.
That was God. God was letting him know he would make it out. I believe that guy was looking for a way out of his situation. He was hell bent on getting to America.
So your suggesting that you could take a true life story, gather up the facts , and condense it down to a action packed, nailbiting feature length motion picture for our viewing pleasure ,Interesting idea that could work
not so good anti-piracy actions from the US Maersk Alabama Crew. Look at Russian Tanker "Moscow University"..... Good practice. Good team work. no injured no hostage
That's his freaking wife. He was just held captive and the guys that were holding him were shot in the middle of the night while he was blindfolded... Don't you think he should kiss his wife after that trauma??
@@contactplayz4962 Captain Philips apparently ignored many warnings of pirates in the waters he was sealing through. And he didn't notify his crew of those warnings. That means that the incident happened because of his negligence.
Tom Hanks really was the perfect actor to portray this man. It's an unbelievable story and it's a miracle that he made it out alive. Crazy.
Exactly
Scars on both his wrists. A physical reminder of his trauma. I can't imagine what scars are in his heart and mind. God Bless you Captain, well done.

I’ve been kidnapped by road pirates several times. I had to pay the ransom to get released.
I wish the Navy SEALS would’ve saved me.

Some crewmen have criminal records. Therefore, can't be in possession of firearms.

Somali pirates have captured ships as far as 850 miles off shore of Somalia. It’s not about protecting the coast, more about money.
Look up Chief Mike Perry’s account of what actually happened. Phillips is pretty much a fraud. And apparently an idiot at his job.
