    I was born August 1957. I've only ever seen one Edsel wagon and that was a 4 door. Glad to get a look under the hood. The 3 speed manual also helps make it rare.

    I had a '58 Roundup. Just like this one, it didn't have any options. 3 speed Edsel's used a '56 Mercury steering column, and they had a Ford truck transmission to handle all of the power from the Edsel engine. They also had a very hefty clutch. Wish I still had it.

    The basic shell is the same as the '58 Ford Ranch Wagon 2 door. When I was a child we had a neighbor who had a '58 Ranch Wagon 2 door. I remember it being a V8 with 3 speed stick on the column. I recall the wife of the owner frequently had a hard time starting it as she would often flood the engine. Fords of that time period were often very sensitive to flooding if you didn't know the right technique to start them. I personally like the Edsel's styling better.

    • @-oiiio-3993
      @-oiiio-3993 3 роки тому

      My first was a '56 Customline Ranch Wagon with the T-Bird 312 Y-Block and its 'toilet bowl' square based Holley. They not only flooded easily but were prone to vapor lock.
      I remember there being a low rider custom '58 Ranchero with an Edsel front clip and deep red / black lace paint job not far from where I lived in the early 70s. The paint was a bit 'over the top' (though very well done) but the body lines worked wonderfully.

  • @tompastian3447
    @tompastian3447 Рік тому

    This car has so much going for it, some may not even realize. First, the 3 on the tree has proved over time to be the best of the 58 Edsel transmissions. Otherwise, you'd have the push button automatic which was prone to fail for numerous reasons. What happened to the air cleaner on this? 400 V8, I'm guessing was more responsive than the smaller Edsel V8's. A big plus that most people would not even realize unless you've used wagons is the sliding rear window. I removed the rear window replacing the right rear quarter panel on my Mercury wagon, and found that having the window out made the rear much easier to access. You can reach in the side window and grab something in the tailgate area without opening the tailgate. Most people would never realize how great this sliding window is, since it has not been an option for over 60 years. To keep water out, all you need to do is slide the window shut. A luggage rack was probably another option available on Ford wagons. Station wagons like this are superior to the many SUV's today, because the lower roof of a wagon is easier to access than the roof on SUV's and minivans. You need a step ladder to access the roof on many new SUV's and minivans. Note that many of the new SUV's and minivans have roof antennas which restrict a good portion of the usable roof space. Some SUV's like the new Chevy Tahoe, when the tailgate is open, a part of the rear roof goes up in the air, making it impossible to open the tailgate if something stored on the roof extends over the rear. You would have to remove whatever is on the roof to open the tailgate. This would be the ultimate wagon with a luggage rack.

    Why did car makers make so few cars then and now it's in the millions? Beautiful Edsel you have there! I love the 50's wagons, I had a 58' Edsel 2 door hardtop (Pacer) in the early 90's I wish I had the money to restore it. I had to sell it after a year

    • @5610winston
      @5610winston 4 роки тому

      It all comes down to demand.
      The Edsel was poorly received on introduction, but quickly lost its initial popularity.
      The styling was out of the mainstream, and 'controversial' was the kindest word used to describe it.
      The sharp recession in 1958 didn't help, either.

    From the horse collar grill to the boomarang taillights, this is sure an interesting car. I knew about the 4 door Bermuda, but not about a two door. Ford spent way too much money trying to cover every market price and body type. Usually, you see these cars with the push button drive where the horn usually went. Looks like it belongs in an Ed Wood movie. Would make a truly freightening meat wagon - hearse.

      Neil Dickson I believe that it was either "Hemmings Classic Car" or "Special Interest Autos" that did an article about an Edsel Amble wagon that was also based on a '58 Edsel 2 door wagon. In those days,it was common to see ambulances based on production station wagons,either 2 or 4 door models;in some cases they had a modified,raised roof to accommodate people standing up inside of them. These could be based on a variety of different makes and models,but they were most often seen on Cadillac commercial chassis,especially those that were used by Fire Departments.Starting around 1972,ambulances began to be built on truck chassis.I have not seen a car based ambulance newer than about 1975...

    12:31 The Atlantic station, later to become Arco, then back to Atlantic, was once a very fancy building, not like the boxey ones people are used to. The building was later converted to a AM/PM mini market. After the new Atantic merged with Sunoco, they tore down the building in favor of a modern A Plus.

      The credit partially goes to an involved mechanic who worked at the dealership in the 70s. that saw to it that the car was continously maintained as garage kept. Funny enough is that at the time they didn't like it to be seen when at the dealership service because of the negative perception and stigma of an Edsel might reflect badly on them. Ain't that a hoot.

      Original miles= unaltered, untampered, not beyond it mechanical limits. The term is highly abused and misused nowadays.

    • @bcabmac
      @bcabmac  4 роки тому

      And mileage when not documented and unproven should be stated as " TMU " = True mileage unknown. But by law most cars this age are listed as Exempt from Federal mileage disclosure. However, when you title it. In some states if you have documentation, they may allow you to report the actual miles on the new title. Some title clerks don't bother to ask and automatically Exempt it. But even if its Exempted on the new title hold on to the documentation and dont lose or destroy it. Things such as an original inspection sticker with date and mileage report on it. ( do not remove from car unless you dont care ) Dealership maintenance stickers with mileage and dates. Original sales order from dealer. Copy of original title or last title with mileage stated on it. Things like that. Keep it all if your doing a frame up restoration and want the cars provenance provable.

    Obviously Ford's advertising went way past honest, "new and different car in every respect", total lie. "flowing graceful lines sculptured into the sheet metal".. another total lie and all it took was one look to know that it was all hype and empty lies. The cars were built in the same line as the standard Ford and the assembly workers were upset about it because the cars were not the same. In many ways they were, but in enough ways not- and the employees wanted more pay to go through the extra hassle and time to build it, it was more work- and they often deliberately did shoddy work assembling many of these cars. Edsel was my very first car and I have a special affection for them but you have to admit, this car was a LOSER and all it did was disappoint- the consumer, the assembly workers, the investors, the dealers (some of whom committed suicide) and the Ford Motor Company. McNamera came in to kill it. Ford just tried way too hard on the Edsel. They said it was the wrong car at the wrong time. I think it was just the wrong car. I'd love to have another one , and this car is definitely a rare well preserved gem!

    Why would anyone would buy a two door station wagon of any brand? The whole idea of a station wagon is to haul bigger loads and more people easier than a sedan.. Only having two doors totally defeats the purpose that the vehicle was designed for.

    • @frankgiaquinto1571
      @frankgiaquinto1571 5 років тому

      One of the reasons why people bought two door wagons - and sometimes other two door cars - was because children could not accidentally open the doors,and possibly fall out of the car while moving.Keep in mind that cars didn't yet have seat belts at that time,and even when seat belts came out a few years later,most people still didn't use them.IIRC,there were no child safety seats at that time either.At least they couldn't fall out of a two door vehicle....
