    The addition of some pigmented resin would kinda help to fill in any cracks and knotholes and also make the piece more interesting. Just a thought.

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  6 місяців тому

      I appreciate your opinion but I disagree. This is just part of everyone having different tastes though. I like to only use resin when I need to and this piece didn’t need it, no need to fill cracks and holes as they are an honest representation of the wood.

    Dude that is absaloutley Beautiful. I just started turning today. Can i ask your advice. I don't have a chuck yet/potentially not able to for my lathe. Can a bowl be done with a face plate?? 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👍

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  6 місяців тому +1

      Yes it can but it’s not easy and you’d be better off learning with a chuck. Woodturning needs a lathe, but just as important is a sharpening device and a chuck. Second hand chucks are more affordable. What is it about your lathe that makes it not able to take a chuck ?

    • @michaelwillson6847
      @michaelwillson6847 6 місяців тому +1

      @@JackMackWoodturning well for starters it's a cheap supermarket parkside lathe to try. My thinking was get this learn a bit then upgrade. a believe it's an M18 thread from what ave found online. I have a set of traditional gouges and managed a small mallet today out of 2x2 pine which for my first time turning was quite impressed with myself with. Although allot knowledge has come from your videos many hours of watching them. Sharpening wise I don't have anything specific right now I have access to a bench grinder and have belt sander but that's all I have right now. I follow dalebasidtimber in Australia he seems very knowledgeable but hard sometimes to compare with the set up and legnth time he's been doing it. Any advice would be very helpful or if you had email address could send u bunch questions

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  6 місяців тому +2

      My advice to all beginner turners is the same.
      If you would like to learn to turn wood you first need to learn to sharpen your tools.
      Your tools will be dull within 5-10 min of turning then everything starts going wrong and nothing is cutting and it becomes impossible to learn anything.
      If you want to learn properly, firstly you need to get an actual lathe. Record power lathes tend y be on eBay all the time and you can pick one up for about 100 quid.
      Next you need a grinder and woodturning sharpening jigs. Again, the jigs are on eBay and don’t break the bank.
      Sounds like you have tools already.
      Then you need a chuck. Another £100
      Nothing too expensive or hard to attain
      You can learn the basics of sharpening from UA-cam tutorial videos.
      And any specific questions you have along the way you can fire at me in the comment section of any of my videos here on UA-cam. 👍🏻👍🏻
