    YES. Been following grease pencil's development for years to see this. I know this is niche stuff, but you're literally the first person I've seen talking about the issues & solutions involved in grease pencil ALL the way around a 3d mesh. Your work is inspiring, your message concise, and your delivery full of charm. THANK YOU! I am beyond excited to see more.

    I'm currently working on a project with characters that have Grease Pencil stuff as part of their design along side the model and texture and all that.
    My solution for this issue was to just hit numpad 5 on the keyboard to switch the camera from perspective to orthographic. Now the distance from the surface of the model would stay the same no matter how much I'd zoom in or out.

    It's probably been said somewhere else in the comments but here's
    another possible solution: instead of a solidify you could use a
    displacement modifier with a negative value. It works exactly the
    opposite way (it pushes the faces inside along their normal) and of
    course you'd have it disabled during the drawing phase and enabled in
    rendering. The possible benefit (?) could be a slightly more responsive
    experience (not having to compute the modifier at draw time) and the
    ability to add the modifier a the end of the process to a bunch of
    meshes (in theory you could also achieve the same result entirely in the material without the modifier if you render in cycles)
    oh and just found this channel but I love the things I've seen so far

      @@SophieJantak Nice!

    • @Shining4Dawn
      @Shining4Dawn 3 роки тому +30

      That would work, but it's a destructive method. If you wanted to go back and make changes to your Grease Pencil art after shrinking the model you'd either have to scale it back up to exactly the right size or you'd have to keep two copies of the mesh - one for GP work and one for display.
      The modifier stack, on the other hand, is non-destructive.

    • @allofronmastiga2025
      @allofronmastiga2025 2 роки тому +4

      Alternatively the "Displace" modifier without a texture does essentially the same as Alt + S but non-destructively, it uniformly displaces vertices based on their normal. Solidify is fine in many cases but it can often destroy uniformity and even glitch out if you overdo it, since your original geometry is essentially duplicated and merged with itself, sharp corners and creases can overlap and mess you up.

    ANOTHER TIP: In this solution strokes intersect with the mesh while you draw them. BUT you can avoid this by checking the "In Front" checkbox in object's "Viewport Display" settings. Then you just draw normally)) (You start seeing strokes from the other side of the model, but you can make them a separate layer and hide)

    This is really great content. You could do a whole series for traditional media artists and 2d digital artists about how Blender can open up a new world for them! A couple of decades ago I had a project taking the paintings by an artist friend and wrapping them around shapes to create painted environments (in quicktime VR) so you could go inside and travel through them. Sadly the tech was not up to the task, but we still talk about that project. Maybe it is time to try again...

    • @SophieJantak
      @SophieJantak  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you! I guess I think that's what my channel is, because I can only approach Blender from the POV of a 2d digital/traditional artist, so what I'd really like is for my videos to feel like a way for others like me to jump into Blender. And hopefully the tutorial series I eventually do will also serve that purpose :) What you're describing sounds really cool, I'm not sure I fully understand (did you do this digitally or traditionally?) but if you have the time you should definitely try again with today's technology, I think that sounds awesome

I make the objects and the world a simple flat RGB black. Then add a colored line-art modifer over it. But no matter what I do, the outline is too dark. Can you help me brighten it up?

  • @MajorCooke2

    You don't need to add a holdout material. What you can do, is in the filter category for the outliner, where the "Restriction Toggles" are at, you'll see a white square with an empty circle inside of it.
    Turn that on, create a new collection, put the sphere inside of it alone, and then enable the Holdout Toggle so you don't need to add a material. This allows you to keep whatever material is on the sphere now.

      Aw I'm so glad you're here, thanks! So I don't really do 2d animation. I always say I'm not an animator, and so any animations I do are usually just getting Blender to animate for me, such as using the camera to rotate around 3D objects, using the interpolation tool, using the noise modifier, using the build modifier to make it look like grease pencil strokes are getting drawn in. tl/dw
    surface offset to zero
    use displace or solidify to offset surface and bring strokes higher.

    Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! THANKYOUSOMUCH Sophie for this video! I'm starting to learn blender and when I faced the surface on grease pencil I started to freak out, thought I was a denial in Blender 😅 But now I learned how to handle it. Thank you again for making this content available and make me persevere on this incredible software

    I tested it here, I didn't like it because the lines "sink" into the sphere, looking like they're missing. I tried two things. First, I selected the sphere and, in object mode, applied Subdivision surface, with "Levels Viewport" and "Render" both set to: 2. I don't know, that actually solved something...
    Things even improved when I went to Surface and set "Offset" to: 0.028. The lines are a little above the sphere, but they no longer "sink". :D

    I'm enjoying your video, Sophie!~ Impressed every time I see it!! I have a question. In the final rendering, the strokes drawn on the back of the mesh are visible through the mesh, but I was wondering how to fix this. I guess I didn't understand this video well..ㅜㅜ

    Thank you so much for making such a good explanatory video!!! Your work is so attractive.
    And your happy energy is overflowing, so I think happiness was contagious the whole time I watched it :)
    I'm writing comments using a translator because I'm not good at English, so please understand if the context is not smooth. Thank you so much!!

    Hey I’m trying to apply the holdout materials for my strokes to be invisible from another side but the strokes on all sides shows anyway in render, is there another way than with the holdout material to both hide the strokes on another side and hide the mesh as well ? Thank you,p v much champion !

    Hey Sophie big fan of your channel, any chance you could do a video on custom brush textures for grease pencil?

    • @SophieJantak
      @SophieJantak  3 роки тому

      I’m glad you’re enjoying my videos! So I probably won’t make a video like this, because I don’t use brush textures - my computer struggled too much the last time I tried, and I really like getting a textured look just by overlapping different kinds of strokes. But it seems like some good stuff comes up if you search for grease pencil textures, I hope you can find what you’re looking for that way

    My first thought is you could have two copies of the mesh occupying the same space, scale one up just slightly and make it invisible, but actively draw on the slightly larger mesh. Of course I haven't used grease pencil or even blender all that much, so I could just be talking out of my hat.

      That's definitely a good train of thought! I just try to save as many steps as possible, and the only issue with your method is that if you were to change your mesh (and I go back and forth between drawing and sculpting quite regularly) you would need to make a new copy and repeat the process. But with my method you could just make the modifier not appear in edit mode so that there are no extra steps to go from drawing to sculpting :)

    Cool Tip Sophie! Btw the "Shrink/Fatten" tool works pretty similar to the solidify modifier but it also scales down your mesh. This only works in edit mode using ALT+S.

      THANK YOU! I was looking for a modifier that did the opposite of the solidify modifier, so this is great know!

    Hey .. while iam trying out grease pencil on 3d objects.. my strokes gets overlapped .. I mean when ever I hide my 3d object it doesn't look good.. strokes are visible in every direction.. I don't know how to explain it .😅 Hope u got my point is there any solutions for It..! ? By the way ur tutorials are very helpful 😀 thankyou..

    Thank you for your explanation. I just have one problem. At the end when I turn off solidify modifier for Vievport and render. In Viewport it looks OK, but when I render the grease pencil strokes still clip into the mesh?

    Hey Sophie! How do you set up your turntables? Do you turn the camera around the object ( in which case how do you handle the background image?) or do you rotate the object itself? I’m finding the mesh with the holdout material isn’t rotating with the GP object, so I’m seeing through both sides. Any thoughts?

    idk if this is helpful or works on the version of blender used in the video but a short 1 minute video said that issue can be remedied by hitting 5 on the number pad.

    Great tutorial!!! By the way, I am good at 3d but really bad at animation part. I want create a block version of my object/human/etc and draw on them for the expression. Does this grease pencil stick to the mesh? or I need to do some funky parenting etc and does it work if I put a bone to it? and sorry for asking, if I want to animate the drawing (expression of a face from normal to smiling), how do I do that?

    This is genius haha. Crazy that it requires such a goofy workaround in the first place.
