I saw this in a theater on opening weekend in 1979. I was 16 years old. It scared the CRAP out of me. Since then it has become my favorite horror movie of all time.
fun fact, The blue laser lights that were used in the alien ship's egg chamber were borrowed from The Who. The band was testing out the lasers for their stage show in the soundstage next door.
Alien is a masterpiece of suspense. Aliens shows how a great director can make a worthy sequel. Highly recommend that you watch at least one more in the series.
Even though he had already shown his talent and capability with _The Terminator,_ I remember some people being very skeptical about James Cameron directing _Aliens…_ until they saw it.
@@casesoutherland4175 Well, I'm sure you know that makes you the coolest person to ever exist. Every day must be more awesome than the last for you. Thanks for letting me know. We're all proud of you.
Alien got made because of Star Wars. With Star Wars being a huge hit, 20th Century Fox soon realised that Sci-Fi was in high demand, and the only script they had at that time, was Alien. So they green lit it on the strength of Star Wars.
I saw this opening weekend. The only ad on t.v. showed an egg, and the tag line, "In space, no one can hear you scream." There were very few scenes, and NO spoilers. A friend of mine had an asthma attack on opening night, and that's all I knew. Still one of my favorite movies.
Correction: “Star Wars” did NOT create movies about spaceships and travel in outer space. The real blueprint for the more modern space film is “2001: A Space Odyssey” which came out in 1968, a full 9 years before “Star Wars”.
I first saw this on Feb. 7, 1981. It premiered on Showtime after being a massive hit in theaters. I was 10 years old, and we were living at Loring AFB, Maine. Three friends spent the night to watch it, and my folks watched with us. We were all absolutely terrified, but loved the movie. We watched SNL to chill out, and started nodding off. It ran again in the very early morning, and someone asked, "Do we want to watch it again in the dark?" Everyone else said, "NOPE."
The Alien is based on the work of HR Giger. Worth looking up is work. Also, Alien won 2 Oscars: Best Visual Effects and Best Production Design for obvious reasons.
"Biomechanical Anatomy" is the term you were looking for, it has what looks like mechanically designed parts and that helps it blend into the ship. Though that's not why it has them specifically, the creture was designed by a famous weird artist called H.R. Giger, who focused on jarring imagery
Oh, and for the closing question: you would hate to be in a movie like this! 🙂 Ridley Scott and the directing team had the Nostromo built as an entire set, to the actors could get to really feel the claustrophobia of the situation. And while they did give genereal directions and clues as to what was going to happen, they left out the details - such as the bloody gore of the chestburster scene, where none of the actors were prepared for the spraying mess.
Something to keep in mind. They attempted to use Flamethrowers on the Alien to kill or deter it. But in the finale, Ripley blasts it with the shuttle's thrusters. And it's pushed back by the blast force, not incinerated by the heat. Just keep that in mind.
The Sequel "Aliens" is an absolute must watch. One of the best sequels ever made. "Alien 3" is... not terrible but not great. The franchise nosedives from there.
Correction - She tried to stop it. The countdown to turning it off had just passed and after that, she had no choice other than to try her luck and head back to the shuttle.
There was a scene which explains Ripley's mystery nosebleed which had to be cut late in the production because they were behind schedule and running out of time, but the scene where Ash attacks her had already been shot, and there was no time or budget to re-shoot it.
Oh a classic! Always appreciate the original special effects in these movies. I wonder if you'd have a go at The Thing? Similar special effects (maybe even better haha), that good old unsettling horror genre that doesn't require jumpscares
Alien motto: listen to Ripley! 19:30 acid blood remember.ey don't dare stab it. If you watch Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter you'll see 2 of these actors when they're older.
None of the crew are scientists apart from Ash. They're basically space truckers. Also, Ash didn't say he'd volunteer for the first group out. That was Kane who became host for the alien. As for the cat, it is not connected to the alien and the alien has no interest in it because it's too small to be a host. For future reactions you might take into consideration that they'll be much more effective if your audience can actually hear the movie you're reacting to.
All of you should play _Alien: Isolation_ after watching this. It perfectly replicates the look and feel of the film and brilliantly extends the story. It's also scary as hell and the stress of finishing it probably took a couple of months off the back end of my life.
I was a freshman in high school when I first saw this in a movie theater and immediately fell in love with John Hurt! His death scene is exquisite and his gravely voice and casual drag of a cigarette had me hooked! I had discovered my favorite actor of all time and was never disappointed by any of his performances!
Last thing: You absolutely must see _Aliens_ and you must watch the Special Edition. It is absolutely incredible; an action film with horror elements. Written and directed by James Cameron, his first film after the original Terminator. _Aliens_ was such a hit it made the cover of Time Magazine in 1986.
No spoilers, but there are fun Alien and Predator franchise crossovers (which are nothing like the level of either franchise, but great creature features anyway). You should see the Aliens that hatch from the chests of different creatures! The imagination in this franchise's artwork is pretty amazing. Among sequels, Aliens is considered among the best, rivaling the original, though more action horror than thriller as directed by James Cameron. This movie started a whole sci-fi meme in movies and fiction nicknamed "space truckers," referring to blue collar, work-a-day, industrial labor-type folks, in space and sci-fi settings. Previously space had been largely written as the provence of the elite or select. Bringing working class concerns to futurism added a whole new sense of realism for wider audiences.

ALIEN is the outer space horror movie. ALIENS is the action packed in outer space, guns, explosions, action movie. The 2 movies are different. The only thing they have in common is Sigourney Weaver.
That shot of the alien putting its tail behind Lambert’s legs. Is actually from the extended version of Bret’s death. His death was more violent, with the alien’s tail slashing the back of his legs. Also, in the Director’s Cut, when first fleeing to the shuttle. Ripley enters the alien’s nest, and discovers Bret and Dallas there. Dallas, who is alive but cocooned to the wall. Pitifully begs Ripley to kill him. Which she does.
So interesting hearing this being described as a classic in a distant sense. I think of classics being from the 30's, 40's, 50's and possibly the 60's. This movie is a classic but I've always just described it as a great film. And there were plenty of space and space-related films and tv series before this. Flash Gordon, the 50's space films, Planet of the Apes, 2001, Lost in Space, Star Trek, Rocky Horror, etc. Was shocked that Aliens 3 was the first experience with the genre; glad you watched the first and hope you watch the second. I'm not a fan of the series after the second film. And there is nothing like non-computerized special effects in horror and sci-fi films; the miniatures, model work, prosthetics, add tactile and visual effect. Oh, Michael Jackson's Thriller video was hailed for it's effects when it came out.
Folks should quit blaming poor old Jones (the cat) for the alien calamity it was humans who caused this mess and he just got stuck in it with them. 🤣🤣🤣 Oh by the way in the book it grew so fast because it was eating the crew's food storage.
Great reaction! The movie takes place in the early 22nd century. Not 2037. That number was for something else. Alot of reactors mistake that for a year.
The reason the alien was just curled up in the shuttle is because it was dying. Creatures that mature quickly don't live very long (like dragonflies), and this thing went from chest-burster to full grown in a matter of (probably) days - given that they had to have time to prep Kane for "burial" and work up the trackers and prods. So it was at its end of life, which is why it didn't go after Ripley until provoked.
My Horror Suggestions (assuming you haven't already seen some of these, which you may have): - The Shining (1980) - Aliens (1986) ** More action than horror but a fantastic film! - The Thing (1982) - The Exorcist (1973) - The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
The Nostromo is powered by four fusion reactors and is much smaller than the industrial structure it was towing. The premise of the self-destruct system is to shut off the cooling system so the four reactors overload and detonate. It's not realistic because that's not how fusion reactors work, but it's the premise at least. If you reactivate the cooling system within 5 minutes it can recover before the reactors overload, but after that an overload is inevitable.
Wow, ya'll think this was an exhausting movie,..hmmpf, wait for Aliens,..and yes it's scary, fascinating, thrilling, mysterious,..all rolled into one,..has your mind going a mile a minute, your hoping, cheering for the characters that are in danger,..your invested in them,..their survival, I too was so mad when Parker was killed off,...so wanted him to make it,..Ridley Scott, very big on details, set was built, full size, the corridors, hallways,..and the cat, well , the cat wasn't on the menu as much as humans, and yess alien seemed to also enjoy the killing, the way it stalks Lambert before killing her,..when Parker rushes it, and it turns on a dime, to kill him,..and after killing him,..turning to Lambert, and like going in slow motion, as it moves towards her, and shes crying, terrified of course,..and you don't see it kill her, but just the sounds, of her being killed,.you so should watch the trailer, original first trailer they released the year it came out, absolutely terrified me,..but there's no visual, just audio, and at the end of the trailer, as I found out after watching the movie, years after the films release, that the horrible screaming, raspy labored breathing, is Lambert being killed,..and maybe that's what made the trailer so horrifying on it's own, but watching the movie and still not seeing but hearing what's happening to Lambert, only adds to the suspense and horror,...keep going, loved your reaction,..Godspeed, Peace ✌
Alien & Aliens are one of the best pairs of films ever. Alien is an excellent sci-fi/ suspense/ horror film, while Aliens is an excellent sci-fi/ action film. The series starts to go downhill after that. Fun fact: John Hurt (Kane) was the only cast member that knew about the chest buster scene. The set was prepped with him while the rest of the cast had a break. So, the shocked & horrified reactions everyone had to it was real.
My number one all time favorite movie. Saw it in 1979 and it blew my little high school mind to shreds, All of the tension and fear of Texas Chainsaw married to the absolute cosmic hopelessness of H.P. Lovecraft.
My idea for an alien tv-series is as follows: It takes places just before the events in the first alien movie and happens on a planet near where the nostromo spaceship is shipping ore.Weyland-Yutani is on the planet and have terraformed it for years, when they discovers a cave with lots of xenomorph eggs. One of them get's infected and a xenomorph is born. It turns out to be a queen, and a lot of the Weyland-Yutani humans are infected and then a war breaks out.All the humans on the planet are wiped out and only a few manage to escape in a spaceship. Then they nuke the planet from orbit. Then Weyland-Yutani regrets the decision and a hunt for the xenomorph begins. They get a tip that there's a crashed spaceship on lv426 and sends the robot Ash on the Nostromo spaceship. But they are informed that the mission has failed and that Nostromo has gone missing. Then Weyland-Yutani get's a tip about an xenomorph on Fiorina161 and sends a team of researchers there. They finds a surviving prisoner that is impreagnated and a queen is born. Weyland-Yutani then wants to use the xenomorphs on the planets where the engineers are located because they want the technology to seed planets with life. They also want the elixir that provides humans with prolongued life. After they have managed to give birth to a flock of xenomorphs, they drops them on an engineer planet and causes everyone of them to die. Then they get hold of the blue elixir that gives prolongued life. But several ships with engineers that where away from their planet when Weyland-Yutani wiped the population out, pursue them and manages to get the elixir back, but gets trapped on the planet where both parties crash. Then a battle takes place and the crew from Weyland-Yutani gets the elixir that gives them prolongued life for thousands of years, but they are now trapped on the planet, with no means to get anywhere. But then they see a light aproaching, but is the spaceship friends or foes ?
This is going to sound completely unrelated, but I promise you it isn't, and as a movie lover and a reaction watching lover, you would both love watching Spaceballs, and I would love watching you watch Spaceballs. It's a Mel Brooks parody of Star Wars. But I promise you, you are now ready for that movie in ways you never knew you needed to be. It's one of the funniest things you'll ever watch. I know, that doesn't seem like the thing to recommend after watching Alien. But I promise you, as a major major nerd, and a Gen Xer, you really really need to watch Spaceballs.
So glad the family was able to watch this cinematic masterpiece. Please check out Aliens. It's on par or better (depending on who you ask) with the original. I am so happy that the family is going down a classic movie journey. As a movie aficionado, I am looking forward to more reactions from you. Aliens is a must, the other sequels not so much. PLEASE watch Aliens, great action, and classic lines. Jose made a good point about the movie being a commentary on human ambition. It makes you question who is the REAL alien? Also, think about watching this movie on a huge movie screen in the dark. How much scarier it would be? As always, love your reactions.
To get a proper reaction, Ridley Scott dodnt tell the actors what was going to happen. They knew something was going to happen just not exactly what.....heh,heh,heh.....
A family of youngsters is boarding the "Nostromo." What will they make of this "old, long, slow-moving, character-centered, no-DFX movie 'without Jennifer Lawrence"?;) 6:52 The "Nostromo" crew are "sailors on a freighter." 7:10 The Space Jockey, a mystery for decades. 8:32 Canny viewers saw Ash's "calisthenics" as suspect. 9:52 Second Officer Kane = Zapp Brannigan. 11:10 The first major jump scare? 12:12 The Face Hugger, grossing out audiences for decades. 13:47 "Why can't they just cut it off?" answered by Acid Blood. 16:30 A Props dept. work of ART, made of sea animals. DFX can't match this level of reality. 18:28 Kane's last meal. 19:10 The Xenomorph, scaring audiences since 1979. 20:11 Burial at sea, an old maritime custom to spare next-of-kin the gruesome details. 21:54 Along came Jones. 23:28 Say hello to Bolaji Badejo. 26:08 In 1979, this was my "WTF? Ash ISN'T Human!?" moment. 26:48 Most didn't see this coming. 29:55 I've read that Lambert is standing in for us, the audience. 32:23 Escape route cut off, stop Destruct to gain time for Plan B. 39:12 Tonight's entree on the Shuttle "Narcissus" is Xenomorph Steamed in Shell. 39:49 Correction, Char-Broiled Xenomorph. With this and the next movie, newcomer Sigourney Weaver, became a major movie star. Along with Linda Hamilton of "The Terminator," they became BadAss Action icons. "Jennifer Lawrence"? Who is that? "Would you like to be in a movie like this?" Take a look at "Galaxy Quest" (1999), where actors face the Reality of Space.
53:30 Sigourney Weaver was nominated for an Academy Award for Aliens. And then got greedy and only cared about her paycheck for 3 and 4, which were horrible.
Right! 😄 Trust the comments. You DO want to watch _Aliens,_ and we certainly want to watch you watch it. I’m sure I was younger than 10 when I first saw _Alien._ I may not completely remember the details of that experience, but the movie itself is, well, unforgettable, to say the least.
You know, if someone went in and digitally updated the displays, there's precious little in this movie telling you that it's nearly 50 years old. This was the first and is still one lf the few spaceship movies where the ship looks lived in and indusrial, the opposite of Star Trek and Star Wars That realism adds to the terror. I think it's inescapable that when the crew returned from the planet they brought at least two adult monsters with them. First, nothing can grow as fast as the monster in the first attack. And as for the one in the escspe shuttle, it must have been in there already while she was running away from another one toward the shuttle. For me, the big unexplained aspect of the movie is how their ship had gravity. It wasn't a spinning wheel as in 2001, using centrifugal force in place of gravity, so why weren't they floating around in a gravity-free environment. As usual in horror movies, the best survival strategy is twofold: 1) listen to the girl ("I don't like it here, let's go" "Don't open that" etc) and 2) follow the cat. Cat's run from danger,. a dog may actually go toward it to protect its human.
52:20 What happened is that the studio saw the insane profits from Aliens, and wanted more. They were building sets for "3" without a finished script. The original script was garbage, and went through a series of rewrites and different writers, but none of them could save it. Fincher was not allowed to make the movie he wanted to make, and was forced to work with a script he didn't like or want. The studio told him "Look, you could have somebody piss against the wall for two hours and call it Alien 3 and it would still do $30 million worth of business." And it shows. They break continuity and kill all the characters that people cared about. And you're supposed to care about murderers and rapists in a prison colony. It was a huge middle finger to Aliens, James Cameron, and the fans. Some freaks still worship that movie, because there are freaks for everything.
Guys with all due respect calling Dallas, Lambert and Kane stupid for continuing to explore is a tad mean. If every human had that attitude we'd all still be living in caves. Also from a practical viewpoint if the landing party had got spooked and exited the alien ship and they'd all got back safely then the movie would have been less than an hour long...not ideal 🤔😉😊
I stand corrected about the following comment about Star Wars and Alien filming and release dates, @snoeflekz corrected my history: I'm not trolling here, just commenting: I know you guys thanked Star Wars for helping make movies like Alien. I think you're talking about deep space science fiction films. But this movie, Alien, started filming before Star Wars was released, which means it was written by Ridley Scott before Star Wars was filmed. Star Trek was released at least 10 years before Lucas began filming A New Hope.
No, Alien was filmed in July-October 1978. Just over a year after the release of Star Wars. In fact, Ridley Scott has specifically mentioned the "used universe" look of Star Wars as an inspiration for the Nostromo and its "space trucker" crew.
Watching your reaction to this classic was a blast. 😄 I doubt I'm the only one to say this, but you _MUST_ watch *_Aliens_* (1986). . .But then stop there. Be well!🙋🏼♂️
The sequel Aliens breaks the normal rule that sequels are inferior. While this is suspense over action, Aliens manages to perfectly balance suspense with terrific action sequences and it goes up a notch or two. It also contains one of the greatest lines in movie sci-fi😉. When I saw in in the cinema in '86, the audience cheered. However, the subsequent entries into what are called 'franchises' these days are poor and like Jaws, the law of diminishing returns sets in so probably only do them if you're bored.
"we think having a roach in the house is bad". that is such a statement for this movie

The actual prop head is made from lots of engine parts and gears etc. So it's very biomechanical in nature.

My Horror Suggestions (assuming you haven't already seen some of these, which you may have):
- The Shining (1980)
- Aliens (1986) ** More action than horror but a fantastic film!
- The Thing (1982)
- The Exorcist (1973)
- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
I adore this movie and I'm so glad you finally saw it!
Aliens is awesome! Where Alien had suspense, Alien had action. Gotta watch it then stop there.
Can I please be adopted by your family? You’re the best! I’m old enough to be the grandfather. Ha.
17:19 how did middle couch lady know about the chest burst
The actor that plays Ash is Bilbo Baggins in Lord of the Rings
Hello guys...I think you gonna love "Aliens"
They don't make them like this anymore. It's the golden age.
I think this is more like coming from Star Trek influence than Star Wars.
My number one all time favorite movie. Saw it in 1979 and it blew my little high school mind to shreds, All of the tension and fear of Texas Chainsaw married to the absolute cosmic hopelessness of H.P. Lovecraft.
Ripley had to go back and shut off the self destruct because the alien was between her and the shuttle.
My idea for an alien tv-series is as follows: It takes places just before the events in the first alien movie and happens on a planet near where the nostromo spaceship
is shipping ore.Weyland-Yutani is on the planet and have terraformed it for years, when they discovers a cave with lots of xenomorph eggs.
One of them get's infected and a xenomorph is born. It turns out to be a queen, and a lot of the Weyland-Yutani humans are infected and then
a war breaks out.All the humans on the planet are wiped out and only a few manage to escape in a spaceship. Then they nuke the planet from orbit.
Then Weyland-Yutani regrets the decision and a hunt for the xenomorph begins. They get a tip that there's a crashed spaceship on lv426 and sends
the robot Ash on the Nostromo spaceship. But they are informed that the mission has failed and that Nostromo has gone missing. Then Weyland-Yutani get's
a tip about an xenomorph on Fiorina161 and sends a team of researchers there. They finds a surviving prisoner that is impreagnated and a queen is born.
Weyland-Yutani then wants to use the xenomorphs on the planets where the engineers are located because they want the technology to seed planets with life.
They also want the elixir that provides humans with prolongued life. After they have managed to give birth to a flock of xenomorphs, they drops them
on an engineer planet and causes everyone of them to die. Then they get hold of the blue elixir that gives
prolongued life. But several ships with engineers that where away from their planet when Weyland-Yutani wiped the
population out, pursue them and manages to get the elixir back, but gets trapped on the planet where both parties
crash. Then a battle takes place and the crew from Weyland-Yutani gets the elixir that gives them prolongued life
for thousands of years, but they are now trapped on the planet, with no means to get anywhere. But then
they see a light aproaching, but is the spaceship friends or foes ?
Hope you guys watch Aliens!! It definitely stands up to the original!!
Really amazinz people?great person, great actor's!Respect for video and much health!❤❤❤❤
To get a proper reaction, Ridley Scott dodnt tell the actors what was going to happen. They knew something was going to happen just not exactly what.....heh,heh,heh.....
Technically the crew of the Nostromo are a group of space truckers with a couple of mechanics onboard.
It wasn't really star wars,It was 21 space Odyssey.
TURN THE VOLUME UP!! THE REST OF US WANT TO HEAR IT!!!
Excellent!! 👍👍👏👏 The Director’s Cut will “reveal” what happened to Brett and Dallas… Now, watch “The Exorcist”…😉
Hopefully you guys stay for the ride, Aliens(2) is a very different vibe less suspense more horror action.
Here's a vote for the director's cut of ALIENS!
53:30 Sigourney Weaver was nominated for an Academy Award for Aliens. And then got greedy and only cared about her paycheck for 3 and 4, which were horrible.
Right! 😄
Trust the comments.
Cat's run from danger,. a dog may actually go toward it to protect its human.
you guys rock, keep it up
Classic film, great reaction all...if I may, please turn up the volume of the movie itself just a touch..I know I couldn't hear a thing
For me "Aliens" is better then Alien. I find it the best movie out of the whole Franchise.😊
If you guys decide to do Aliens, you may want Mom to sit this one out.
Only watch Aliens and skip the rest. It ends on a very satisfying note.
Absolute masterpiece the greatest suspense horror Sci fi movie ever made, and all star cast to boot
Now if they had only listened to the crazy cat lady in the first place, none of this would have happened.
Just saying.
18:56 The nightmare has begun! 👏
They should watch the thing
You gotta see Aliens. It's so good but completely different.
I stand corrected about the following comment about Star Wars and Alien filming and release dates, @snoeflekz corrected my history:
I'm not trolling here, just commenting: I know you guys thanked Star Wars for helping make movies like Alien.
@@Snoeflekz you are right. My mistake on my history there. I stand corrected.
Watching your reaction to this classic was a blast. 😄 I doubt I'm the only one to say this, but you _MUST_ watch *_Aliens_* (1986). . .But then stop there.
Be well!🙋🏼♂️
If you watch the sequel, ALIENS, which you definitely should, watch the special edition, not the theatrical release. Enjoy!
