I think you should do a Capcom season with stuff liike Ghouls n Ghosts, Bionic Commando, Strider and so on as there were quite a few conversions done and some better than others. Great to see another comparison video.played the c64 version alot back in the day. The vcs version for the hardware wasn't bad How about un squadron or forgotten worlds
Good to see you're back with a comparison-video. At the time Ikari Warriors came out, I had moved on from my ZX Spectrum 48k and Amstrad CPC 6128 to the Commodore Amiga 500 so I only ever knew that version and all in all it looks like another ST port of the time - funny though, that the ST doesn't seem to be able to run the game at full speed when there are too many things going on. Anyway, I enjoyed the game all the same and played it a lot - keep those comparison videos coming and I hope you have a Happy Christmas 🙂
Hi matey, yes I aim on producing a few more of these VS videos in the new year as people seem to enjoy them😉 They take a bit longer to edit than most videos but people like them so will get a few more done 😎
Got the Amiga version as a pack in when I bought the Amiga. Absolutely loved it. I now have it on 2600, 7800, nes and Amiga. I actually prefer Secret Command on the SMS over any of them.
6:50 probably because different companies (porting houses) handled porting to different regions (due to licensing restrictions, or not being able to handle the software volume production in different regions), this was a massive issue back in the day (still exists in some form today, but are usually forced to keep parity with the source material and not allowed complete freedom to change the game how they see fit), those games usually had the same name, but massively different games due to the changes, this was sometimes due to the devs either lacking the skills, or allowed complete creative freedom to do with it what they wanted (which ended up always being vastly different from the source material). It's like VCS Pac-Man all over again. They (the companies that handled the port) for some odd reason didn't understand what made the game what it was and completely changed things around basically making it a different game entirely. It always made me mad when running into this. Yes I briefly owned the NES version before taking it back as it just horrible. The NES was capable of a lot better than that, at least having a version that played a lot better than that, I mean what the heck is up with the death animations, you shoot an enemy and they basically walk backwards for an eternity. My only complaint about the video itself is at 8:28 just put things like that at the end of the video, I find it very distracting when trying to pay attention to the content of the video itself (at least it's better than what some UA-camrs do in spamming subscription reminder all over the video every 20 seconds).
Hi matey, thanks for the lengthy explanation, that all makes great sense thanks for sharing your knowledge on this one. Glad to hear you took the NES version back in the day, as I said so disappointing and should have done so much more. Glad you enjoyed the video and do check back often as I do a good few of these comparison VS videos. I find there are many out there but few people give an opinion on their favourite etc and just show the variations. As for the feedback on 8:28, thanks for this. Have a great new year. Cheers 😎🍺
One of my favourite C64 games. Had it on a compilation. Couldn’t finish it as a kid but managed it as an adult. Commando was fun but I preferred the taking your time advancing on this one. Would like to see The Newzealand Story or Wizball That is a good beer lol
Brilliaint OG I remember my brother having the Commodore 64 and if I remember it loaded around 121 on the tape deck if you were lucky and didn’t have to reload 🤣 . Merry Christmas bruvva would like to see a platoon or the running man or whizzball or barbarian ! Thanks OG
Hi Bob, Oh the joys of failed tape loading !!!! Can remember being desperate to play a certain game only for it to crash when loading !!!!! Did Barbarian a while back matey, those other suggestions are pretty decent titles buddy so will give them a consideration for future VS vids matey. Had a great Christmas matey and hope you did too 😎🍺
Spot on with the verdicts OG. Oh, and yeh, almost nobody owned the +4 or it's lower memory equivalent - the C16.... Except me.... A little story to that one...... Mum left us in the car one day whilst she nipped into a shop. Whilst she was in there, being kids, we messed around in the car. Anyway, whilst messing around, I opened the back seat which uncovered the car boot and revealed its contents..... In there was a Commodore VIC 20!!! I was horrified!!! I wanted a C64. That was the system to have at the time. The VIC 20 was an absolute pile of trash next to it. I can't remember whether it was a pang of honesty or disappointment but I ended up telling Mum that I'd found it..... She went mad. Shouted at me for looking in the boot Anyway, funny thing is, I never saw that VIC 20 ever again. I got a C16 for Christmas instead. Disappointing, but nowhere near as disappointing as if I'd actually got the VIC 20. All was made good the following year though. I got my C64, and my year of putting up with the mediocre machine was over. The rest is history. 🙂🕹️
That’s a brilliant story Richard !!!!! Loved it matey…. We all have such great memories from our early computer systems. I don’t think I knew anyone with a C16 until you that is 😎 At least you got the C64 in the end matey and I am sure it was well worth the wait my friend 😀🍺
Oh man ikari warriors ANOTHER arcade game i used to love playing in pubs and arcades with my older brother even if i couldnt drink......never been much of a drinker though unlike him who unfortunatly is now an alcoholic and has been for quite a few years
Hi David sorry to hear about your brothers issue. As you say fond memories of these games it was the true golden age for video games and we were so lucky to have been around when these games were released 😎
I haven't got access to my retro gear due to working outside UK, but good old hamster released arcade versions of ikari warriors 1 and 2 (probably mame version) on switch, so can get my fix.
Good to hear the SWITCH has come to your rescue on this one matey 😉 To be honest I still have to get some of my collection out of the loft, getting there slowly but running out of shelf space does not help 🤣
Hi Duffy Another great review BUT i tried the game on my ste and played fine without any slow down? did you play on emulator or an stfm. keep up with more reviews and have a merry xmas. Lee
It's pronounced star-oh-prah-men :D I remember playing Ikari Warriors on the ST and hated that game for that slowdown. I hadn't seen the Amiga version until now and it was clearly better! The Amstrad CPC often comes out unfavourably in those videos but, just guessing, there is a reason that makes it slightly unfair. The Spectrum had a gfx resolution of 256x193 with 1 bit per pixel (with attributes). The Amstrad had three modes, 160x200 in 4bpp, 320x200 in 2bpp and 640x200 in 1bpp. So in all three cases, the Amstrad's framebuffer was more than 2 times larger than on the Speccy Neither machine had a blitter not hardware sprites, so in order to render a single frame, the CPU on the Amstrad had to move more than twice the volume of data. Both machines used the same Z80 at 3.5 MHz on the Speccy, 4MHz in the CPC.
So no wonder the CPC typically had much worse animation. It's simply that this type of arcade games was not a good fit for the CPC. On the other hand, adventure games and RPGs, which rely much more on static but beautifully drawn and colorful images, were great on it
Hi matey some great points and your very knowledgable 😉 Thanks for sharing the info…. Interesting matey and the point you raise about RPGs etc is spot on. When I played the original arcade game back in the day I struggled with the twisty joystick 😉😉🍺
Thats a fair assessment matey, As I said the 7800 is a system that passed me by. This looked great on that console but was really hard to play as so many bullets and grenades being launched at you 😉
Ive played nearly all the versions and id say based on playability, for single and multiplyer the c64 eu/uk version was actually the best. It's smooth, it has reasonable graphics and great in either single/multiplayer in comparison to other 8bits. The spectrum version was too monochrome and jerky for me and the Amstrad was better but jerky scrolling againThe Amiga was best out of the 16 bits, it was close but due to sprite flicker on the ST, its a black mark.
The American C64 version is just absolute trash (same goes for Bionic Commando) however the American versions of Out Run and After Burner are decent - maybe one for later (loads of comparisons out there with these 2 already)?! You can the joystick mode on C64. Player 1 uses the C= or Run Stop key and Player 2 uses = or the up pointing arrow key. I believe it makes it change to a hybrid rotational control or lock the fire direction. The +4 is a decent machine when games were made specifically for it. It has the same TED chip as the C16 but 64K ram. So games came out that had to work on both C16 & +4 back in the day hence the extremely basic looking titles for 16kb ram. If you have a look on +4 world you will see homebrew titles like Barbarian from Palace and it looks and plays similar to the C64 version as it is utilising the full 64k ram. I wonder if the ST version has the stuttering on an STe - will have to load my copy up and double check as it has been a while since I played it on a 16 Bit. An awesome game to just check out and play on Amiga & ST is Dogs of War by Elite - it puts many of the run & gun games to shame. Need to do Guerilla War and Victory Road nextt to follow on from this one!
Great feedback and insights as always Iain, really appreciate the wealth of knowledge you bring to the channel matey. The +4 really did pass me by and didn’t know anyone who had one, I suppose the C64 took all Commodores market share back then. Will give the follow up titles a consideration for a future VS matey, cheers 😀🍺
I used to play that game a lot on the my brothers Atari ST with him and my STE, the slow down wasn’t too bad as I used to make sure I quickly saw an enemy to shoot them. I seen the Spectrum version in them days and was quite good I thought. I agree with your verdict, the Amiga got one over the ST due to that most important aspect of gameplay tho both look great and totally confused 🫤 with the C64 US , it’s rubbish yet the European Is awesome
Hi matey, yep the US VS The UK version was most odd. I would have imagined that the best version was released in both areas but obviously not!?! The Speccy did well on this and graphically was really well drawn.
What other games do you suggest I compare in a VS video?
Love to see Head over Heels mate!
