I love the way you do these videos. One version after another. I hate it when it's 2 or more versions onscreen at once. Damn, I never noticed until now that the Amiga version's tank fire range was waaaay too short! It's amazing to finally recognise the influence this game had on Cannon Fodder after watching this. Definitely more impressed by the Atari 7800 version. Thanks for this trip down memory lane :)
Agreed. Although the only thing I would have changed is to have put the USA and then EU C64 versions one after the other, instead of further apart, as in this video, with one near the start of the video and the other near the end.
I have so many memories of playing the Amstrad CPC version, it was really THE game to play on the system then. It was Commando but 10 times better and with 2 player mode and a tank. That loading screen though, even then it was gross :D Also quite rare to have an Amstrad version crushing the NES one, but that's the power of Micronics, the Tiertex of the NES.
Played this today on my original C64 + 1541 disk drive :) Played the heck out of the C64 Europe version when I was kid. It was awesome. Later tried the Amiga version and assumed it to be better but it didn't feel that good. I still prefer the C64 PAL version. Nice vid thx.
The Amstrad version was something of a short term exclusive at the time. The C64 and Spectrum versions were delayed meaning the Amstrad had Ikari all to itself for a bit 🙂
These comparisons remind me why the C64 ruled the 8bits- just blows the rest away, Atari included because of - everything else being roughly equal- the Sid sound chip.
Had this back in the day on Amstrad CPC. IMO the best of the 8 bit ports.Has colorful graphics and reasonable scroll very smooth based on the Speccy port unlikely the lazy ports that arrived normally. Thanks for the video. PS Hope you can upload the sequel Victory Road soon(If not uploaded yet)
c64 (US): small number of enemies is noticeable, also looking poor. c64(EU): much better in every way. Amiga: good, close to arcade. ST: same as amiga but sluggish as hell. CGA: except looking awful, not bad playability. EGA: looks much better, still far from the level of other 16-bitters. ZX: not bad if you can distinguish between sprites and terrain.
never could understand why we got an EU and seperate USA version for c64 that were totally different, dear god that usa version had me thinking, coulda sworn it wasnt that crap when i played ikari, then noticed the EU version later in the vid. bizarre stuff.
PAL and NTSC differences, it took a fair bit of work to adopt PAL code for NTSC televisions, often easier to assign your own regional software houses to write a specific NTSC version, than wait for PAL code to be finished, then adapted.
@@thefurthestmanfromhome1148 understandable, just weird how the 2 variants are often radically different from each other, tho looking at a few more videos i can see thats sometimes a good thing. If the EU version sucks, theres a chance the USA one might be better, the flipside as well, its almost like 2 chances to get a better game.
There is another NES game which is based on this game named Heavy Barrel, have many similarities like the explosions of grenades and enemies, also has a very smooth gameplay
I can't comment on the game experience as I have played most of them. But from a purely visual perspective after watching this video, the Amiga looks the most polished and closest to the Arcade version. And I'd probably put the Atari ST version in second place.
@@jasonlee7816 Actually In 1988 Elite published the 2nd Commodore 64 and the Amiga versions... then ported to Atari ST... thats why Atari version had so much slow downs... because it didn´t have the blitter chip that Amiga had to speed up the motorola 68000 processor work...

Why the hack are there two c64 cpnversions? USA and EU? The EU Version, I played the version availlable in Belgium, seems far better - but why is that? Besides there are conversions for MSX 1 and even the Acorn ELk, but last I guess homebrew... THC for uploading!
Thanks! This has happened before on Commodore 64 and usually the US version was the worst. Now Cabal and Rampage come to mind, but I don't really know the reason.

Excellent game on most 8-bit micros. They did the NES dirty, sadly. Terrible version on that console. I remember playing the game in like 88 or 89 on my 48K Spectrum + and getting the tank was such an exhilarating experience for an European gamer at the time on a home system that I still remember both the maps and the feeling. What an amazing game this one was, for sure.
Okay! So now you all choose the version that you played as a child... even if it's so bad compared to the others. 😂 Yes. Of course! It makes total sense… (the most of this versions look aaaawful!)
Technically ZX Spectrum 128K have better sound effects, for some reason I really like 48K's sound effects. I expected MSX2 version to be very meh, but surprised I was. So I like it the most. But still this game in general is very meh.
Arcade, Amiga and Spectrum (in all the other versions-ports, the graphics are bad, in some cases over pixelated, The music is poor, The scroll is other of the strange benefit of the ZX, in other games the zx have problems with the scroll, and in this is nicer than the other versions -less amiga, is the best, near the Arcade-). And sadly Ikari for ZX, have no ingame music (not even in 128k ver).

The Atari 2600 version is a tech wonder
I was thinking so too!

c64 EU version was great - and that MUSIC!!!!
Yes I mean the US is so terrible compared

I love how the MSX2 version is like "yeah our scrolling sucks but the game is a BLOODBATH now".
I like Amiga, MSX 2, Amstrad & C64 EU ports. This is one of those rare times that the Amiga wasn't completely humiliated with a rubbish port.
The Amstrad version was something of a short term exclusive at the time. The C64 and Spectrum versions were delayed meaning the Amstrad had Ikari all to itself for a bit 🙂
It was exclusive for over a year!
@@ivarfiske1913 Yep. This and Prince of Persia ( which didn't officially come to C64 and ZX Spectrum until homebrew I think )
I played it a lot on the Speccy and the Atari ST

The NES is also 8-bit and it looks so much better (I never had a NES, but a C64, so I am not biased)
7800 had the best port!
I was pleasantly surprised by this videos quality!

The MSX2 absolutely destroys it
I also loved the CPC conversion. We haven't covered Victory Road yet, but I will sooner or later. Thank you!
@@retrosutra You're welcome
none of the 8-bit ports are good
Amstrad version does suffer from though. Also, I'd the c64 and 7800 versions surpass it.

it´s incredible what Atari 2600 programmers did with so few resources that the Atari had

The Amstrad one :)
The 7800 port of the game is clearly the best. It's still the one that comes the closest to the arcade original. I own both the 7800 and NES carts.
Much better than the nes version lol.

C64 version for me, although the MSX2 conversion is a close second - looks like a good laugh what with all the corpses and tank wrecks laying around!!
C64 EU to be clear *
Ikari warriors were great games really fun
Lo que lograron en Spectrum o Amstrad me parece asombroso. El arcade es maravilloso, está en mi lista de imprescindibles.
Estoy de acuerdo, para mí son muy buenas conversiones también.
