Facts
Thabks for dragging the video past ten minutes. You could just show the numbers. Thank god I use adblockers for people like you.
Thanks for the view.
Seems like the smart thing to do is to download the games to the external HDD and then copy them to the internal SSD when needed. That way there is no need to transfer back and fourth and you benefit from the faster transfer speeds. Thanks for helping me realize that.
100 % correct 👍
You'd need a constant amount of free space equal to your largest game but ight chief have it your way.
I feel like even if it's an ssd, writing many times might eventually fail at some point
Work done for this video is incredible 🙌🙌🙌
appriciate the efforts taken sir.
Thank you for the kind words 😊.
I have the same 4TB hard drive as you on my Series S. I’ll be sticking with that for now. Very pleased with my Series S so far. Enjoying your content for it. 👍🏻
Thank you 🙏
Does your drive stay on when the Xbox series s is off
Is it ssd or disc type?
@@musnadb.a5114 it’s an external hdd
@@jetssimeone4086 thank you
Read speeds are typically faster than wrote speeds on most hard drives. That would explain your faster transfer back to the internal drive. I bought the expansion card for mine and will use an external SSD to store games I’m not currently playing.
Got it. Thank you for the information.
Great video and I myself use two Seagate backup Hubs connected to my Series X, one for 360 games the other for all others.
I think the coping back to internal is faster because you are coping back to a ghost space already copied from, this is not a technical answer just my thought on the why. I completely agree with going with the SeagateHD as it is build to be copied and read from multiple times and will last longer if reading and writing are going to be a constant.
Thank you 🙏. It sounds like you have a pretty good setup.
We need a follow up video showing differences in load times and running performance on games being ran from the two different drives :)
I have something that just might scratch that itch: ua-cam.com/video/MJGU7A4cpp0/v-deo.html
He will make another absurdly long video for that. Gotta get them ad rolls.
Thanks for the video! Helped me again! Haha ill stick to hdd external.. more bang for the buck! 🙌🙌
You're welcome.
Biggest difference I noticed between my new ssd and the old hdd is actually playing the games. The ssd is soo much more like the internal speeds granted not the same but loading screens etc feel soo much more snappy. You should do a test on this sir :D .
Maybe I'll do a follow-up video with that information 🤔
It's only 2 second slower than internal loading times
Yeah I love playing my games off the ssd it feels as good as the internal tbh but to be fair I never used a regular hdd I just went with the ssd because it was on sale lol but still I could have gotten a 4tb hdd and have way more games lol oh well
@@bndtx3 I had a normal 1TB HDD and I dropped 500gb for the efficiency of the ssd. The old hard drive was soo slow in comparison really cramped the series x performance.
@@DrenoshGaming I bet ! Yeah I think with the newer gen the ssd is the better option
light, simple and straightforward 👌 👍
Thank you 🙏
It would've been interesting seeing loading times of older titles from and to external storages
I'm thinking about doing that video soon.
Very nice video I went with the 4 tb disc I know the ssd is quicker but I prefer more games than quicker loading times I already filled it and it was 180 games some games optimized for series x|s run straight from the disc and it works fine loading times are not so longer like games on ps3 so I am really happy, also I can run games in the internal disc while transfer games I usually play one dead by daylight match while transfering games
Thank you 🙏.
Who cares about transfer speed it's whether it affects gameplay which is what really matters plus you get what you pay for simple you want the best you better be ready to pay for it
thanks this gave me a good decision because i orded a xbox series s . you made my day thanks!
You're welcome 🙏
@@HandsomeGadgets Well, if I have a 4th gen SSD, can I run XS games on an external SSD?
Thanks for this Bro
You're welcome. Glad I could help.
I’m upgrading from my OG Xbox One to a Series X next week and I’m so ready to play it I plan on just using my 4 tb external hard drive to keep my games on since I’ve seen vids of people saying you can play games from it.
Yes, you can play all previous generation games directly off an external drive.
I decided to go with the SSD. I didn't receive my Series S yet but I saw DF's video on external SSDs being beneficial on the Series X|S. Back compat games don't require the use of the internal SSD, but with an external SSD you still get better load times and stuff like that.
Depending on how big your library is, you can store all of your Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One games on your external SSD and save the internal SSD solely for Series X|S optimized games.
I can see your point. I prefer SSD's for their speed, but I also like to get the best deal. The external hard drive is a better deal.
@@HandsomeGadgets Oh yeah for sure, there's no right or wrong way, it all comes down to personal preference. I've just been spoiled by SSD speeds 😂 I don't have as many games anyways so 860GB or so to split between the internal and external SSDs is plenty of space for me.
Bro literally I love you, I was about to drop like $450 on storage (the expansion card (1TB) and W_DBlack external SSD (2TB)) thinking I couldn’t play Xbox 1 games off a hdd! Because I’m not gonna play to many series s enhanced games I won’t need those, and so instead of spending ~ $450 I can just shell out $180 for a 8TB HDD and play Xbox 1 games without having to move them! I’m so happy you said that bro😭❤️
Awesome 👍. I'm glad I was able to help you out.
Here I thought 511GB internal would be plenty going into my first Xbox experience (only had a switch before and games are much smaller lol), little did I know that I would fill up internal storage with only room for 3 games 😖. Can you play optimized games on the expansion card slot storage, I.e. the proprietary connector? I have to imagine they build that expansion slot for something more import than what USB 3.0 can muster.
You can play all previous generation games directly from an external drive.
the transfer back to system is faster because of the faster read speed of the external drive vs the write speed
In game load speeds will be better off an ssd too. It’s not just the transfer speeds from external to internal. Looks like based on your test it takes about twice as long on average, probably can apply that to everything. Launching games, loading maps maybe even texture pop in sometimes, but the first 2 as well as transfers will be twice as long on the external hdd versus ssd. Personally tho I don’t play enough games to warrant more than an extra 1tb of storage. AND I have fiber internet so if I needed to redownload a game I could probably redownload it faster than you could transfer from your external hdd, this isn’t black and white 😁
your not downloading any game faster than these transfer speeds
You're DEFINETLY not downloading faster than USB transfer buddy😂
We want more xbox series s videos !
Your wish is my command 👍

How fast is the the HD spinning?. If you can get your hands on one, what are the speeds going to be with a 10,000 rpm drive?
So how long does it take to reinstall games from the Xbox cloud onto the ssd? Worth even getting a hard drive if you can reinstall just as fast?
Good question. I don't believe it'll be much of a difference. Since you're downloading it, it will depend on how fast your internet speeds are.
So I was wondering if the same scenario with my PS5 applies to the Xbox Series S I’ve just got in my hands today:
- PS5 External SEAGATE HDD 2TB hooked up to play PS4 titles (with performance boosts applied to them)
- Xbox Series S SEAGATE HDD 2TB hooked up to play Xbox One titles (with performance boosts applied to them)
My question resides on the second scenario, which I would like to confirm before buying the HDD itself.
Will the games perform better? As they do on my PS5 from its external HDD?
Keep in mind that I don’t care for loading times, only performance boosts.
Thank you!
I just got the HD and the 2TB version but if I put my optimized series S and X on my HD will they play on the HD or do i need to transfer the games back to my internal hard drive?
You'll need to transfer the games to the internal SSD. The system will let you know when you try to play the game.
@@HandsomeGadgets okay thank you
Anytime 👊
A lot of games just work, try and see
Can I use Samsung T7 SSD for both storing documents and other media files as well as for storing Xbox games(for plug and Play)at the same time?
Or it must be formatted for only one purpose either gaming or storing media?
Good question. It has to be formatted for either purpose at a time.
Can I download the games directly to the hdd? What about updates? Will I be able to update even optimized games directly on the hhd?
bought the Seagate Xbox 4tb hdd loving it so far
Can u use the external hard drive for playing games that aren't optimised for the xbox series x/s ??
Yes, for all games that aren't optimized for the series S/X
Would you recommend this as an option to go along with my seagate 1tb card to store or chamber next gen games I’m not currently playing, as well as some older or not fully optimized games to play direct from the drive. Thoughts?
100% I'd recommend.
@@HandsomeGadgets the T7?
I wish you showed game load times. You know how much longer it takes to get to gaming when the game is on hdd vs ssd. That's what counts. Not how long ot takes to move a game once to the external drive.
Keep your eyes peeled for that video.
can you store games that are optimized for S/X on these drives? and then when you want to play them just transfer back to the internal drive?
Great question. Yes you can do that.
Does xbox has any requirements abaut ssd drive. Like can it be usb 3.1 or 3.2 and can i plug 256gb ssd or it is too small?
So i understand that i can store next generations games on external ssd but cannot play on it. So my question is can i move them from external drive to the xbox's ssd and then play?
The quicker the drive, the better. I trust samsung ssd and any hard drive that's considered a game drive.
That SSD is 1050 mb/s and they were that close. I wonder about 550 mb/s SSD, perhaps almost the same as a HDD. I'll take the 4tb anyday.
Yup, same here 👍
when you say it writes 140 megabytes per second and 1050 mbs, is that the speed for transferring the games from the drive to the pc (xbox)?
Hey mate, do you have a video showing actual load times off the external SSD?
Not yet. But I've been thinking about making one.
@@HandsomeGadgets personally I think it could be worth it especially for those wanting a Series S. Due to the limited internal space on the console an External is a must have for previous generation titles and therefore would be nice to see how the load times compare with the internal SSD.
My understanding is that the new CPU power means the load times are still very fast even off external drives but there are no UA-cam videos confirming this.
It's very quick no matter where the games are stored.
@@HandsomeGadgets thank you for the reply
You're welcome
I know this is a few months old, but did they make a change on the XBOX Series X|S? I ask because Gears 5 and Valhalla told me they couldn't be played off the external drive (but still let me save them there), but Mass Effect Legendary shows optimized for X|S and it plays right off my external drive... (as do other non optimized games like Batman Arkham Knight).
Check out my latest video ua-cam.com/video/BlTTYuP2Ydg/v-deo.html . Some games optimized for the series S and X can be played off the external drives.
Ill be getting the 4 tb hdd. Im planning on putting a ton of game pass games on there. Only game that concerns be is warzone being like 300 gb
That's the way to go. I'm in the same boat.
Well, 200+ GB are a lot, but with an internet speed like mine 18 mbps it will take 2 entire night to download warzone, around 16/18 hrs, so even if the hd take 1/1:30 hr to transfer it from the drive to the xbox, it is a lot less and I have a lot of space to store a lot of games.
Yup, you got it.
Samsung Evo 870 in an external enclosure is a good option too I got 500GB for £30 on Amazon with an enclosure for £5, I just did tests with mine with Dead by Daylight which is around a 60GB file like Hitman and Internal to External took 3 mins 36 seconds and External to internal took only 2 minutes 50 seconds
How long to download that 60 GB game just direct from the cloud. Are either of them worth it?
It depends on your internet speed.
If you’re that impatient to wait and extra few minutes to pay the same price for 1/8 of memory for the same price then the Xbox series s isn’t for you. Because you’re only getting 380/500GB out of the box. I would take the 4TB any day. I actually got mine for $70.
Nice 👍. $70 isn't that bad for 4tb.
@@HandsomeGadgets I mean compared to the seagate 1tb expansion card it’s way better deal
I completely agree. 10 minutes is NOTHING! I think people have gotten so spoiled. I remember dial up days, when shit took FOREVER, but we were all so patient we just accepted it. Now people bitch about a few minutes. Not me. I'd rather a $100 4TB instead of $220 1TB.
You got a point, but bro remember where there used to be a time where you would just stick the disc in and start the game? I think that’s where shit went wrong
Game loading times would have been nice to see, but good video regardless
I believe you're looking for this video ua-cam.com/video/MJGU7A4cpp0/v-deo.html
Got a 2TB Seagate Game Drive for my Series S and not only are load and transfer times worse, but the whole console often lags as a result. It gets to the point that sometimes I can't even get to the settings app to fully shut down the console (which I now have to do everytime unless I want my drive running all night).
That's strange. Something is terribly wrong with your console. You should reach out to Xbox to get it fixed.
I paid 1600 dollars to upgrade my PC to a great big 2 terabyte drive, I know these Terabytes are not easy to develop and distribute, it was not easy to upgrade my PC to a 2 Terabyte drive.
I know that Microsoft put a lot of work in these Xbox hard drives, it was not easy for them to go to all these Expert computer technologies and upgrade hardware, they put a lot of years and a lot of work in these Terabyte drives, I wish I could have thanked them for their years of extraordinary hard work in their new Xbox’s.
Yup, the Xbox Series S/X are pretty amazing pieces of gaming tech.
Can you screen record everything on your Xbox screen with Seagate? Also, does it record party audio?
You cannot and my clips don't have audio. I haven't tried it on the series X yet.
@@HandsomeGadgets on the series x you can use the game capture settings (with an external ssd) to capture up to 60mins of footage at 4k.
So I can play games directly off the hard drive? Not worried about speed, just after halo Mcc and cold war only had space for ac vallhalla and watch dogs .. lol
Yes, as long as the game is a previous generation game. Next generation games optimized for the series S and X can only be played off the internal SSD.
Sounds good, appreciate the help and videos, which also help in ways. Keep it up and mark yourself another sub
Thank you 🙏. I appreciate you.
Yay it's my video
I have the game drive and I didn't have to open up or pay for someone to put in a ssd .. im ok with the extra time it took thanks
U dont gotta do any of that. There all external ssds so they just plug n play
I cant decide what to choose since my laptop is old and I play most games on geforce now or low settings, Idecided to buy a Xbox Series S.
I have a 1 tb toshiba hdd I had 500 gb of pc games on it and I wanted to use it for Xbox I lost all of it. However I realized that when I move desteny 2 to the hdd it took just 27 is minutes for 107 gbwhich is fine for me because I deside what to play on that day and start to move it from hdd to zbox while working and finishes when I want to play. And I also I realized that most of the next gen title are at least 60 gb, and in my opinion they the size will grove year by year with better grafics and expensions. On the other hand I just need one more portiable drive that will hold my all pc games. For pc since I don't move the games so speed is far more important. Ssd is far more durable than hdds but hdds have more storage options. I am in between Samsung T5 2 TB SSD (for pc) and WD P10 5 TB (for xbox). Can you help me?
I have a Samsung T5 and T7. I'd recommend going with either one.
thank you this is so helpful i love you
You're welcome. I'm glad I could help.
The transfer speed is fast going to the internal because of the nvme that the Xbox has. I have the same results with my pc .
Nice 👍

Hello so when i play a game that’s on my external hard drive it kicks me out then says “ external hardrive ready “ but it’s all ready plugged in
I haven't had that issue with the game drive that I use.
So even if it is a next gen game you can move it before you play it right if you couldn't play it right off external?
You can move the data to/from any drive. However, you can only play next generation games off the internal SSD.
the smaller game is faster because of file size and DRAM cache on the SSD. The larger game has files that would be too large to load into the DRAM cache, and will be directly written to the SSD from the source drive. The transfer speed between the DRAM cache and the SSD is incredibly fast, this is why it's there acting as a buffer. You will typically only see the rated transfer speeds when using small files that can fit into the DRAM cache that is built into an SSD, but not all SSD's have that cache. As for the writing back to the console drive, my assumption is that the console never truly DELETES the data from the cells on the drive. Normally, even on a PC, there is an artificial 0 placed over a cell when you delete stuff, and is later re-written when new data is presented. This is why "formatting" drives for selling a computer can be risky if you select the "quick format" option. This is how drive recovery works. I'm probably wrong there, but it's my only guess.
Get the Samsung T7 right now! On Amazon it’s $60 off for 1 tb. $109! Up to 1050mbps!
Nice.
ok, im trying to find the answer for my question for a while now. The problem is that im trying to find an external memory but not for the games! Just for the screenshots and clips that I take. Any tips? Thanks in advance for your answer!

I heard you can't move optimised Xbox Series S games from the Internal hard drive to this Seagate HDD hard drive..Is this correct?
That's incorrect. You can store any data on the HDD. However, you'll have to transfer the optimized game to the internal SSD when you want to play the game.

Try in game loading speeds for the different storages
My question is reliability. My Seagate hard drive died within 2 years. Will the ssd last longer since there are no moving parts inside?
Time will tell.
It’s transfer back takes longer because read and write speeds are different normally write speeds are faster
Having issues with my WD 2TB external HDD. XSS won't detect it. I have to use a powered hub as a pass thru for it to work. Even then it is glitchy. Actually just realised the Series S has a front USB too. It seems so flexible that it would do 3 USB (2 back, 1 front) and the Expansion port, making 4 drives (not including the internal SSD - which could make 5 actual drives to navigate).
But most people would use the front USB for some peripheral I’m guessing.
I’m yet to find a vid showing 5 drives (int+ext) - that would be hilarious.

Its not because of internal external. All devices read faster than they write. So if one device can write faster than the other one can read its always quicker than the other way arround.
I got a intenso 2,5" 5 TB hdd, i know its Just a hard disk but honestly its not bad, most of the free games are playable even from the hard disk and only got It for 100 Euro for 5 TB!!
Nice 👍
SSDs aren't only faster but more reliable. I'd used two external HDDs and so far both failed within 6 months.. Literally all my data gone.. meanwhile i've used flashdrives that lasted years.. so it's best to invest in something without moving parts because it'll last longer.. This is why SSDs will always be better..
SSD's tend to be more reliable since there are no moving parts. But they can still fail. The HDD that I featured in this video still works as well as it did when I bought it almost 2 years ago. Maybe you were a little rough with your HDD or you purchased a cheap one 🤷♂️
@@HandsomeGadgets nope. Both were name brand (Western Digital) and cost me around $60 each for 2TB of space. I also used a case to carry both of them around to prevent them from getting damaged. They still failed.
Seagate is my company of choice. Also, I don't travel with the HDD.
Might be a stupid question but can the non optimised games run straight from the harddrive
They sure can. I use the external drives all the time.
@@HandsomeGadgets thanks so much coz my 3tb toshiba one is acting up and that’s a powerd harddrive with its own plug, was making loud noises and flashing like crazy so was looking at your review for this one
No problem. Glad I could help.
Biggest issue is cost/TB value. I'll stick with the 8 tb xbox hub
Does all hdd or ssd aren't able to transfer optimised games?
Yes either can store any game you would like.
Any drive that can store/run the older Xbox games can STORE a Series S/C game, but nothing will run a downloaded S/X only version of a game unless it's the internal storage or the Expansion slot storage. So if you wanted to avoid downloading the same games from the internet you could have 8 TB worth of Series S/X games only and transfer games onto the internal storage when you intend to play them. Obviously this is somewhat of a hassle to do if you have one or more games on your regular play list that are as big as.. say, Ark Survival Evolved and all of the DLC content, or CoD Black Ops 3, as both games are over 150 GB(not sure without checking BO3 the exact size, but Ark was over 175 on PC when I checked recently!). It can be annoying b g or even pointless for someone with a Series S that plays both Ark(and all DLC) and BO3 to try to play anything or download anything besides those two games unless they purchased the expensive Expansion port storage since out of the 500GB, around 360 GB of storage is available max with absolutely nothing downloaded to it due to how much room the Xbox operating system itself takes, as well as a little bit of space that gets used to define the structure itself for how to store any files/games and the last part it's something that you could observe on any device that uses storage. Specifically on a computer, a fantastic example of how to see this part of storage you don't even get told exists is if you have a brand new hard drive whether it's internal or an external drive and you format it it a couple of times, each time using a different choice for the file system. FAT32 as the choice will show a different numberforcurrentstorageinusebyfile / outoftotalmaxstoragethisdriveiscapableofhavingwhenfilledtothebrim but the same drive formatted to use NTFS WILL show a different number for that second part, the max storage or how big it says that drive is. If you ever hear the term headroom, that's the amount of space that gets used defining the structure this - the method information gets stored.. lastly, the way the units of storage is counted, either 1,000 bytes to equal 1 kilo
obyte, and 1,000 kilobytes for a megabyte, all the way up for every unit for measuring size instead of 1,024 for a kilobyte and everything else.. it makes a big difference by the time you get to Gigabytes and Terabytes on how you do that, and not everything agrees on which to use..
Oh i tought he was going to test gameplay, why no one test in game external speeds of ssd x hdd and yeah xbox one games can run from external storage without transferring it back, only games that need internal ssd storage are games made for Xseries or with upgrade patches for Xseries, xbone games can run externally like on xbone itself, and yeah they benefit from external ssd specially cheaper sata ones, cause usb 3.0 can only go to 5gbps but its perfectly matched for sata ssds.
Good work , from india
Thank you 🙏
