Snakehead Fishing on the Chesapeake Bay - How I like to target these fish!

  • After my guide trip today I had some clients who wanted to target some snakeheads afterwards and I have special access to a marina where I can fish for them from the shore. They typically like to sun themselves in marinas at a lower tide and so we went to work with some some plastics to try and get a few of these snakeheads for dinner. Here is a quick video of our time fishing for them.

    Who is SmallmouthCrush?
Travis Manson was born and raised in Wisconsin. He started fishing from the bank at a young age and spent most of his childhood with a rod in his hand. Travis is primarily a self-taught angler that is always learning and experiencing this amazing sport of fishing. He started out fishing for walleyes and fishing in local walleye tournaments, but then in his mid 20's, he caught the BASS BUG and has been hooked ever since. He competed at the highest level in bass fishing on the Bassmaster Elite Series for a number of years. He is a full time fishing guide offering trips on the Chesapeake Bay for largemouth bass(year round) and trophy smallmouth bass guided trips in Upstate New York on Lake Ontario and the St Lawrence River. His UA-cam Channel is named after his passion for the smallmouth bass and will be used as a platform for "how-to" videos, on the water instruction, crazy on and off the water topics on the day in the life of a fishing addict! Hope you enjoy, and until next time we will see you on the water!

One of our BFL buddies, Ed Casey got one (with a photo of it) on the Potomac that went 19# if I recall correctly. It went from his arm pit to his ankle and he is a 6 ft guy.

armpit to ankle my ass - I'm a local and fish the waters the world record came from and the waters that were the epicenter, aka, where they've had the longest to grow. My Northern Snakehead PB is 12lb - caught during a NVKBA (local KBF branch) bass tourney.. That's exaggerated.
The world record is 19lbs 5oz out of the Potomac from a creek a mile or 2 away form where I got my PB, but not every part of the Potomac and connected bodies of water holds fish that massive. They're everywhere now though - even most lakes and reservoirs have them, but they are impacting the ecosystems negatively like we thought they would. Catch and release is legal in the water you caught them in now, but must be dead to transport (which I think includes putting one in the livewell)
You also have the bow fishing guys killing them - who knows how big they'll grow to, they haven't been here very long and they seem to have settled into their place in the food-chain by now. I bet 21+lbs is gonna happen before 2030, but that length you said sound make-believe to me.
It's amazing how big they're getting - I didn't think northerns could grow this large. Thought only the Giant Snakehead from thailand got this big.

Remember, they need to be dead if you put them in your cooler. DNR would fine you if they saw them in your cooler alive.
