  • Placidsuax has some very cinematic looking attacks, but when you get down to it he's not engaging gameplay wise at all. At least with Rennala, Elden Beast, and Ancestral Spirit I find myself vibing a lot more and having a chill time, rather than bored to tears.
    This could've been way more optimal and shorter but I had s*** RNG and coudln't really be bothered anyways: • Dragonlord Placidusax ...
    Streamed live on twitch: / lupineos
    Come hang with the gang.
    The Challenge Run in it's entirety: • Margit RL1+0 Zwei Only...
    This is from my infamous "Suck it Anderson" Elden Ring challenge run. I always nickname runs so they aren't such a mouthful, but basically it's a Zweihander only, RL1+0 build. The point of this run is for me to have fun mastering the bosses while showing that anyone with two eyeballs and a heartbeat can learn the bosses, and to show that colossal weapons are better now than they have ever been. The posture system is a better incentive to playing aggressive than the rally system ever was tbh.

    Placi is easily one of my favorite bosses from a visual/cinematic viewpoint, and maybe my favorite arena in the game, but I can see why he would be boring in a challenge run context.

      @@loopine I've fought both Placidusax and Owl Father once on a normal playthrough each and quite enjoyed both of them. Their fights were long enough to really give that impression of a battle of endurance, while not becoming obnoxious and also still maintaining a tense fight. It makes them stand out where most bosses tend to have a much quicker pace.

    If you fight Fortissax/Lansseax: highly suggest trying attacking his paws and looking to his front. You'll see what exactly he's doing (which also worked for me with other dragons without horse) while also avoiding and predicting his attacks. After that, it's a matter of finding the right angle to dodge his lightsaber attack. A pretty fun but short fight if you ask me.
    But yeah, I adored Dragonlord, even if I'm not the biggest fan of dragon fights in Soulsborne (or other games in general). I feel him and Midir, despite their individual problems (and Midir has a handful of those) they feel fleshed out, have some mechanical depth and the spectacle is insanely high, which is what most dragon fights in other games rarely achieve.
    Edit: Added Fortissax 'cause I mixed up their names, lol.

    • @loopine
      @loopine  Рік тому +3

      I think Dragon fights in all souls games are so sick the first few times but lose their appeal the more you play them. I find it's the opposite for most other bosses.

      @@loopine Agree with what you say. They're still great fights, don't get me wrong, they're much better than the jokes we have in other games, but aren't as mechanically nuanced as other. Of course, doing challenge runs are completely different and jankier than an average playthrough. I found that out in previous Souls and ER.

      @@mabooooyleatherface.1044 That's why I think rl 1 aren't objective measures on how good bosses are since leveling up in an RPG is most of the times the ideal way to play, not to mention how you end up mastering the boss movement but doing little damage and a small mistake meaning death.
      I agree that challenge run make bosses better or worse, because of the Souls jank and RPGs as a hole. Gideon is an ass on low levels, but on an average playthrough he can be a short 'n' sweet varied boss.

    I like Placi but even in the context of a normal fight if you run to his left side he just does the lightning claw into fire move every single time, with no mix-up or anything. It's soooo repetitive. He needs a couple more moves in this context.
    I like i-framing the lightning attacks (where he roars and three appears) whlie hitting him but I can see how in a context like this you'd just have to do it too many times, and you'd get one shot...

      Yee for sure. I played kinda lame too. I think I like Fortissax, like I like the bullet hell idea in a game like this (might be why I kinda like Elden Beast) and it's a better tool for him to flush you out and make you move around Fortissax, rather than having him spam a tail swipe turn around like with Placidusax

    Lupine, you gotta help me over here. I've been doing my zwei only no hit run, and the deathrite bird in the Mountaintop of the Giants has been kicking my ass. • @minerman60101
      @minerman60101 6 місяців тому

      Very late response but it's a five way pattern that is always angled the same relative to its body, just like Morgott's daggers. You just need to find the correct angles to run away from it when it's winding up the move and you can dodge it every time.

    One of my fav. fights, although in a challenge run context is very understandable it would become a nightmare. Btw, i was wondering if you have seen Feeble King's response to your video on Joseph Anderson. He makes some outlandish claims particularly at the start, but he's updated analysis on the bosses is pretty good and I'll say his criticisms on ER not communicating very well how combat with bosses should be tackled are quite valid. Maybe a response to it on one of your streams like what you did with Quick Reviews would be interesting.

    • @angelamengualcortinas3614

      @@BBQcheese while i do think people stupidity is half the problem here, and i made a comment in Feble's video critisizing him for not acknowledging that, i do think ER communicates poorly that you have to be aggressive in boss combat. While i know the series is known for its obtuseness (and that definitely ER is better at communicating mechanics that, for example, Dark Souls), I've never viewed this as something good, but negative. Viewing UA-cam videos for lore is fun, for understanding basic mechanics, not so much. It's ok if you disagree, but honestly i don't understand how this opinion could be considered "not valid". My problem with not having the posture bar visible isn't because i think you cannot play around it. You can, and its very fun. But if we're going to withhold information from the player, then why not making the poison or rot meters invisible too? The reason is because they're useful. Having it would only make it instantly more intuitive for people to play aggressive and to optimize their runs against bosses. Besides, even if some builds don't need to see the bar, so what? Would it hurt the game to have it in any shape of form? You can also play Sekiro ignoring the posture bar and focusing on lowering the health of the bosses, but even in that case is unproblematic to have the posture bar. And the same applies to jump attacks imo, while those are more contentious since that would clutter the screen a lot in some fights.

    • @angelamengualcortinas3614
      @angelamengualcortinas3614 Рік тому

      @@BBQcheese poison and rot meters are invisible on enemies, but what i meant is that they're not invisible when you are getting poisoned. Think about it. Imagine a bar wouldn't fill up every time you walk through a poisoned swamp. Theoretically, you could still mentally predict via experimenting when you're gonna get poisoned. But the developers still made the bar visible because they found that learning curve dull. I think the same about the posture meter. The damage you could do by making it visible, implying as you mentioned an intended playstile (which i kinda disagree), is nothing imo compared to the damage of people forgetting it's a thing and relying on extremely passive styles to beat the bosses, which is what happened. Feeble says at the beginning that 95% of veterans didn't understand ER bosses when the game launched, and while that's absolutely a massive exaggeration based on an echo-chamber, it is true that when soooo many people have the same clearly unintended experience, somewhere along the lines something went wrong. And yes, we people are donkeys who hate learning new things and adapt, but we were the same donkeys when Sekiro came out and the backlash for combat changes wasn't nearly as bad.
      Idk, maybe we would have to agree to disagree here.

I like the idea of a bullet hell boss in a game like this (Frotissax, EB, and Rennala aren't quite there though) and the lightning is an interesting way to make you constantly move around Fortissax and end up in weird spots so he does different attacks, rather than just getting behind any other dragon in a souls game and having then spam a tail swipe to reposition.
