No hidden meanings, no unresolved mystery or angst. At least on the surface, a truly happy song. How refreshing.

kind of a manic-depressive happy song. But, a happy song.

@@matthewteague623 Well, yes. But if you're going to have to deal with the depression, the manic days can get you through. One of my favorite students was a superb writer who dealt with severe bipolar disorder. One day she told me that she used her bipolar disorder in her writing process. I asked how, and she said, "I write when I'm manic and revise when I'm depressed." My jaw dropped and I said, "That's brilliant." She used her manic days to produce a lot of content, and then used the hyper-critical, borderline obsessive days to tear it apart and make it better.
      It worked well for her.

So many great songs! Such an iconic modern rock sound! So many great songs; BOYS DON’T CRY, THE LOVE CATS, JUST LIKE HEAVEN, LULLABY, WHY CAN’T I BE YOU, IN BETWEEN DAYS, A FOREST, to name a few.

Their poppiest, most fun song. For a similarly upbeat Cure song, please try Love Cats.
Cure is more typically what I would call "moody". I have to admit that I do prefer their moodier, darker songs overall. Please check out and react to: A Forest, Close To Me, A Letter to Elise, Boys Don't Cry. There really are no bad Cure songs. They put out a B-Sides album that has some wonderful gems on it, including two covers of Purple Haze that I absolutely love. They are all great musicians, true artists IMO.
Edited to add: several of their classic videos have recently been remastered in HD and they're a joy to watch, I would encourage you to react to them if you can.

yes, "lovecats"! and "just like heaven" -- that was the first song my husband and i danced to at our wedding; i requested it especially. they're my first go-to for '80s music. "close to me," "boys don't cry," "in between days," and "pictures of you." and then the collab with blink 182, "all of t his." the best songs are the ones you can listen to over and over again and not get tired of them.

I was never a Cure purist who maintains that their best work was the dark gothic stuff! Give me some of that, but when the hair got big, and the lipstick smudged, that's when i joined the party. Great song, and try 'Love Cats' sometime!

Into the trees, Charlotte Sometimes, Burn, Fascination Street I think are more representative of their moodier or darker music. Love cats and this song are definitely upbeat songs that were great, but overall atypical of what is perceived as the Cure sound. Great reaction.

Daniel,"Close To Me" by The Cure is a funky, jazzy, upbeat, song featuring saxophone. The video of the song is very catchy. The guys are in the ocean with fish, octopus playing the sax and other marine animals. EDIT...Daniel, if you decide to check this song out, try to find the longer version which is subtitled CLOSER MIX. This version was released in 1990 by Fiction Records UK.

There were the kids who listened to Duran Duran and the kids who listened to The Clash. After school you could find the C kids in the art room making some big sculpture out of tape dispensers, spoons, lint from under b-wing stairs and Mr Beasom's glasses. The DD kids, meanwhile, were out at cheerleader practice reapplying their mascara.

Friday I'm in Love. Alternative. One of my favs by The Cure. Lead singer Robert Smith is very goth looking and his hair is styled a little like Edward Scissors hands. Hahahaha.
There 's a Adam Sandler movie called The Wedding Singer. His character tells a girl that he wrote a song after breaking up with someone, that it's uneven he warned her, he'd been listening to alot of the Cure. Which turns into an angry song. LOL! Insanely funny. LOL! 😂😂😂
    Watch this movie, Daniel.

A Cure song that was palatable for a wider audience. It's very bright and poppy for The Cure, but then the 'real' Cure sound will always depend on which phase you started to listen to them (post-punk beginnings, the 'goth' years or the 'pop' albums), it just goes to show the variety of this band!

I've been a Cure fan for over 30 years, and few bands mean more to me, personally. They're also an *incredibly influential* band that deserves many reactions! :-) Many of their songs are much, much darker than this one, but I love the "happy" Cure too-- it's the brilliant sunshine after the storm! For the *emotional opposite* of this song, though, try "One Hundred Years" or "The Figurehead." *Stunning, powerful* songs!

The problem with the CURE is that one could go on for a while just hitting the foundational and unique cuts from them. The different personas of Robert Smith and the Cure are on display through their discography, the genius is that the CURE make CURE music not commercialize.
A good list for reactions who are just discovering the CURE.

    "A Night Like This"
    "Primary"
    "Jumping Someone Else's Train"

"One More Time", (should add that one to the gloomy list)
    "Thousand Hours" (gloomy and sad)

Just Like Heaven is an interesting mix of the gloomy and poppy. Fascination Street, Pictures of You, Lullaby...all off that same album, I think...and all gloomy and dark. Earlier there's Head on the Door, Killing an Arab, The Forest. They have had a very, very long career and their sound has changed quite a bit over the years.

Friday is definitely one of The Cure's happier tracks, and it's great! But it isn't representative of their typical sound. Their entire album, Disintegration, is perfection (IMO). You did Love Song, but I would continue with Lullaby, Fascination Street (GREAT bass riff!), Pictures Of You & Disintegration. Earlier tracks like Push, Just Like Heaven, A Forest are classics. Later tracks like Burn (features on The Crow soundtrack), and From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea.
    Fantastic group!! Great reaction.

  • @FleagleSangria
    @FleagleSangria 2 роки тому

This is The Cure's "Shiney Happy People" song (see R.E.M.). Is it representative of the bands sound? I think so, Robert wrote it and he is in the band:).
(Im being snarky because as a Cure-ist we are suppose to be glum and snarky)
Seriously though, The Cure had basically three big hits "Love Song" (which youve done), Friday Im In Love and Just Like Heaven (their biggest hit). All three are love songs and dreamy obsession lyrically. And catchy as hell.
Someone mentioned this is a bi-polar persons description of being in love. Pretty much yes. So not all shiney. Not all happy as it may seem on the surface. Erratic love relationship if you really listen.
The music is the manic part and the lyrics are the rather depressed part. I mean the guy is only able to keep it together on Friday;).
Robert at his best could write amazing love songs like this that are complete earworms. You should complete the trinity and do "Just Like Heaven".
After that maybe do an entire album such as "Pornography" or "Disintegration" to get The Cure that Cureheads are talking about.
The band is tied so much to the goth movement that they pretty much wrote the book on the gloomy, foggy, dusky, dreamstate genre.
That dark gloomy period started with the album "Seventeen Seconds" and then "Faith" (my favorite Cure album overall) ended the dark trilogy really with "Pornography" as Robert Smith was tiring of the dark direction the band was taking. Still many of the later songs and albums have a dark sound. But after the dark trilogy Robert and the band made a concerted effort to become more catchy and poppy. And they did that well with the next couple of albums.
Then they returned to form to make a more enduring album with what many consider to be their masterpiece...
    "Disintegration"
That is the album I would react to if I were to choose one entire album,
One other note. This band and so many others including U2 owe a huge debt to one band:
    "Joy Division"
I dont know if you have reacted to Joy Division. But I suggest "Transmission" (the live version) or "She's Lost Control"
(Every reactor does "Love Will Tear Us Apart" great song but for some reason youtubes fidelity sucks on that song and is a crap shoot to try and find a decent sounding video)
But yes, Joy Division would be cool because you can see going backwards where many of the famous early post-punk bands of the 80s got their sound.

Yep, the deftones were influenced quite a bit by The Cure.

I don't know any other Cure songs to suggest, but if you want a song about waiting for the weekend, you could try Loverboy's "Working for the Weekend". 😊

Gloomy&dark? Try "A Forest", "Charlotte sometimes", "Fire in Cairo" for starters.

I like this happier stuff too, but try " high" off that same album, or Boys Don't Cry. My favorite " jumping someone else's train"

This is their most popular song, but it's not the overall sound they're known for. In the early 80's they did some post punk/goth albums before they got into new wave/pop. Try listening to "A Forest" "Charlotte Sometimes" or "Lullaby" for some examples of their darker vibes.

Please react to either or both of these songs. One is by Brenda Lee called "If You Go Away" release on the album "Johnny One Time" in 1969. Very emotional and beautifully sung. The second is by Potliquor called "Cheer" from the album "Levee Blues" released in 1972. Great vocals, drums, piano, guitars, and horns. Fast moving, loud with a great message. Both are available on UA-cam. I'd leave a URL but they often don't work. Thank you!

Even though it may also be considered an atypical song, I really recommend The 13th off their Wild Mood Swings album. Some older songs that I think would be good to react to: Fire in Cairo, Lullaby, Close to Me, Let's Go to Bed, and Catapillar.

Great pop song... very catchy. But you've gotta check out (In Between Days) Without You. It was kind of the precursor for this kind of upbeat poppy style but it's got such great guitar licks. I hope you listen to it! It's not one of their gloomy songs... I prefer their upbeat poppy songs because they often clash with their downbeat lyrics.

Massive fan of The Cure - but this is only one side of them - please check out 10.15 Saturday Night / A Forest / Other Voices / The Hanging Garden / The Caterpillar / Close To Me / Catch* / Lullaby / A Letter To Elise / This Is A Lie / Watching Me Fall / Lost / The Perfect Boy
This list being one selected fave from each of their albums - Watching Me Fall is my all time fave.
*Why Can't I Be You would be my choice if Catch didn;t have such deep personal roots....
