The ethanol cornbread gasoline atracts water and the gas tanks condensate on cool nights when they're not kept full .. Keep up the good work.. Shovelheads rule..🥃😎👌
One thing I like about this channel is that Paul doesn't edit out all his mistakes and mishaps. It's more like a real life video instead of a fake edited youtube video. We actually get to see some of the mistakes we all make!
Noticed the small o ring was missing off the top of your accelerator pump tube? That won't help. Shovels are finicky, the carb needs to be spotless, make sure your plugs are gapped at 40 and check your pilot jet... get it right and you'll love it! Been riding mine daily for 35 years .
All that sediment in the carb is ethanol buildup. With all this new gas (excluding rec fuel) has around 5-8% ethanol in it when it sits for awhile it’ll solidify and gunk up carburetors bad. Rec fuel is old school 0% ethanol
Ethanol is real hard on small engines/motorcycles. It brakes down in only a month or two and causes big problems. Eats rubber gaskets and such. Worth picking up some non ethanol 93 if they offer it in your area especially if the bike is going to sit for any amount of time
I can get 90 octane non ethanol by the lake, but it's pretty out of the way for me as much as I ride. I think this was more an issue of a contaminated gas can, seems to be doing ok now
Ethanol, dude. It’ll leave water in your tank if it gets any oxygen, and eat more seals than a great white shark. Don’t underestimate how bad that stuff is for a carbureted bike. If it’s not your daily, get some gas at a marina for storage.
@@jamesorth1521 You're a lucky man! I feed all my bikes, my car, even the lawnmower non-ethanol high test. I don't have problems with it, but it sure is spendy.
welcome to the world of ethanol fuels! e10 starts to break down with in 10-14 day of delivery. my guess the tank wasnt full and it was in storage where it was very humid and the e10 draws the moisture out of the air. when you store it fill the tank and add a good stabilizer. keep making these cool video!

I cut this out, because you couldn't hear me over the wind noise, the accelerator pump is backed all the way off. I took it for another ride later, I richened the idle mix a 1/4 turn and gave the pump a little bit more, and it seemed much better. Still some more to do
Glad you are able to ride the thing now without too many worries of it letting you down. Good job man. You are a better mechanic than I will ever be)))
Dude. I wouldn’t have put that gas in my lawn mower. Heck I wouldn’t have put it in my 01 pick up. Love the honesty of these videos. I’m hooked. I have my old bikes put away in the trailer for winter and it’s killing me.
My son bought a Suzuki for his first bike cheap. Needed carbs gone through. Drained tank emptied all fuel from bike. Filled with fresh gas. It took 3 weeks to get part and another week waiting to work on it. Almost exactly one month fuel had turned to crap. Smelled bad and had looked like really fine yellow sand in bottom of tank. I remember when I was a kid getting gas from anywhere lord knows how old to ride our mini bikes never had a problem. Good luck with everything bud you take care and stay safe.
Keep up the good fight. Love the videos. I had the same fuel issue. New tanks and murky fuel. I figured out it was the gas station, which is now closed. They’re tanks were really bad.
You likely did put in some old gas or gas from a contaminated can. It sure looked like there was some water in there. I wonder if running the torch over those tanks could have caused that much condensation which over time rusted the tank? Aftermarket tanks are usually made from very cheap steel & prone to rust. Original tanks never used to be lined, but every aftermarket tank I look at recommend to line them. So, instead of buying a tank I found a local guy to clean out & epoxy my original. Anyways, so far, so good! Keep it up.
My guess is I picked up a junky old gas can that had been sitting a long time and didn't realize it. We had a lot of cans at the old shop and were in the middle of moving when I filled the tanks, so, it's possible! As always nice to hear from you
Between those o rings and the inside of that carb it looks like it was molested by whatever came out of those tanks. Good job getting her cleaned up and back to running down the road and as for that rooster...
Believe it or not but I put moter oil in my tanks after I clean them. Rinse with gas then fill with gas and ride. And yes you need the carb support bracket. Shovels have there own rules. Ride and enjoy. Also in line fuel filter can't hurt either.
Those front calipers are fairly simple, crack them in half and pull the pistons. As long as there isn't corrosion inside, which you can fix, just a quick clean with alcohol or the brake fluid you plan on useing, don't use anything else, a new seal and dust boot, check that the pads slide easy and put them back on, maybe $10.00 each?
I'll probably end up replacing them, I took them apart last month and they look utterly terrible inside. I feel a lot better about sinking a little more money into this bike after actually riding it and having a smile on my face!!
Live and learn . Clean the tanks no smell of gas warm the tanks with a rose Bud . 100% dry then coat the inside . Follow Directions . One Day at a time Bud 👍
What kind of rear fender are you looking for? I have both fenders off of a 1983 FXE. They're both in good shape if I recall correctly and are just hanging on the garage wall.

When I got my bike yeah it was Rusty inside a used 45 percent vinegar. And lots of nuts and bolts in a couple of weeks I mean it's not perfect but the flakes ain't coming off anymore and contaminating up my filter....
Just found your channel. Re the front brakes - why not strip them, clean all the lands and fit new seals. Will probably sort them out and cheaper than new callipers. Curious to know what ignition you are running - presumably points.
Always an epic feeling to take the first ride. I just got back from my 800 plus mile round trip on mine and have more stuff to do to it now. But it didn't leave me stranded though. What ignition are you running?
I may try it, I've never had a problem with gas sitting for months on end, I honestly think I poured from a contaminated fuel can. We'll see how it looks in a few weeks!
Work the bugs out once you do no trouble head tanks r not the the shovelhead lol motor, do your tanks in red kote ,do not use kream shit it will fall trust me ,red kote is the best been doing mine for the couple builds with no problems at all! Just helping you out.

Sounds good glad to see you more upbeat,Yeah we all get to know our Shovels really well, they are fantastic teachers. Keep it up.
Yup, glad I took a break from it!
I used POR-15 Tank Sealer Kit to get rid of the rust and seal my tank 15 years ago, it's still holding up well today.
Thats AWESOME man, glad its coming together and i am glad you are excited about the Shovel again! Grateful that I and my club could be a part of it.
Thanks Chris, really, y'all went above and beyond to help this poor boy out 🤣

Ethanol fuel absorbs water from the air.
There should be a bracket between the air cleaner and the Rocker Box
A bracket got added during this episode if you watch long enough. I realize most people stop watching after a few minutes.

I had one of those in line filters on my 84 Softail. Gas kept getting vapor bound (?) either that or one of your jets are still gooped up.
