How to stop being skinny fat

  • Being skinny fat isn't a body type, it's a sign of metabolic distress as well as an effect of poor lean mass to adipose tissue ratio. Unlike people who are straight up fat or skinny, who can (and should) mostly focus on diet to modify their body, the skinny fat individual would do well to put the bulk of their efforts on training diligently instead. While a solid control over your food intake and hormonal environment will of course help, these 2 factors truly become relevant when you start putting muscles into the mix.

To add to the video, please newbies, don't believe that a transformation will occur in 90 days. That is a common myth. If all goes well, you can expect to have obvious muscle gains in anywhere from 90 days to a year. It's highly variable. A radical body transformation is a multiple year endeavor. Just be patient and focus on your tonnage rising in time, as he said in another video.

In a similar note I’d like to pitch my experience. I “trained for years” but 1) only really put in 6 months here, 3 months there, 4 months there of genuine consistency and 2) had mediocre programming, interspersed with sporadic lifting. I definitely had a bit of muscular base despite definitely still being a novice but I did have reasonable “body knowledge” - form, how it feels to lift and go hard, etc.
Part of it was just acknowledging still being a novice and party was following a cobbling of NH’s novice programs that I cobbled together for my needs. But being very consistent and going hard every session, I’ve had visible gains in 4 months. I have no doubt it will be a transformation at the 1 year point.
Especially if you’ve had experience in the past with a bit of a “powerbuilding” influence as I think many have, you’ll probably be coming in with some underlying base built up and experience with compounds. But doing a legit bodybuilding workout, you’ll see your arms grow faster than you thought possible which is honestly hugely motivating compared to the torso and leg grind.

@@jmass4207 I can also say that when I changed to bodybuilding (following a Steve Reeves inspired program) my arms grew for the first time and gained a pound of muscle by themselves in a few months. A lot of this came from treating isolations as seriously as compounds.

The bulk went really good but at a certain point I knew that it wasn’t necessary anymore since the gut I already had started getting a little bigger. I can maintain the weight just fine, but I'm definitely "skinny fat" with noticeable lovehandles & back fat. What I didn't do when losing weight, was train. At all. Zero.

Glad I watched this video. I’m getting back into training after a month lay off and I’m in the same dilemma - I’m 10lbs of weight gain away from being fat and 10lbs of weight loss away from looking skinny(er). My lifts are “intermediate” but in no way shape or form look like I lift (besides maybe after a delt and arm pump in god tier lighting).
Am dedicating 6 hard months of maintenance/slow bulk and dialed in training and nutrition - took before measurements of most body parts and tons of pictures. Am tired of spinning my wheels and falling in and out of consistency. I will weight train and eat healthy for life but I just want to see the net progress if I put all of my effort in for once.

I think something not many people think about is what we call "homeostasis". Meaning that the body like to remain in certain state and becomes more efficient in that state with time. If you keep bulking and cutting, your body never becomes efficient for gaining muscle and staying lean. That's why in my opinion you should either recomp, or if you are very fat just go to a body composition you like that is sustainable to you and stay there.

Thanks for the video brother, I've been struggling for years with this exact thing. I lost around 50kg over the years but I did it in a terrible way (no exercise, low protein, huge amount of carbs). Plus for a while, my calories were super low just because I was seeing the weight going down (had periods with less than 1k calories daily). I didn't know anything about recomp or training or nutrition back then. A couple years back I almost reached my ideal weight and guess what, I still had lots of extra fat, non-existent muscles and basically ended up skinny-fat. Big gut and all that with tiny arms and a weak core.
I've been lifting for a while now and I can see some difference but the diet is the biggest problem as if I start cutting I end up looking more skinny fat as you said and if I bulk, I get belly fat instantly. It's a huge challenge. I'll follow your advice and try to stay at maintainance. The big problem is that gyms are closed here at the moment so I can't do much training-wise except using dumbells at home. Thanks again for addressing this issue. PS: how do you get pecs like that?

This is what I've been doing. I eat in a surplus because I favour strength over muscle definition and it helps me progress. But I still want to create a defined and muscular physique. So as I build more muscle and strength, I maintain the same calories; I don't increase them. Eventually over a few years my body fat around my torso should reduce while my limbs should grow. It's an extremely slow process, and sometimes I eat too much of a surplus, but in general I'm progressing.
It's true. If I cut, I lose fat everywhere but my torso. I'm not skinny fat strictly, but somewhere in between. I don't have a big belly, but I have fat all around my mid section, whereas my arms and legs are generally skinny. If I cut, my veins in my arms will start to show, my collar bone will pop, my legs will become more defined, but my belly and low back will still be slightly fat. That's where I naturally store any fat. Cutting just makes me look skinny, not athletic and muscular.

Yeah I think one thing that NH didn't mention is that people's BF distributions are genetic. It doesn't matter if you cut you may still have a gut simply because that's your bodies preferred place to store fat.

I want to add that almost always skinny fat is accompanied by having leaky gut, and it usually can be reversed completely by eliminating sugar and other simple carbs like flour, seed oils, and eating more natural food, enough fiber and maybe some kind of natural probiotics to restore gut bacteria. Another thing that helps is intermittent fasting - to give your gut rest time between meals and heal.

I had a clean diet, i worked out but still had fat around the belly. After only 2 weeks of going to bed around 10 and waking up around 6. My abs started to get visible. Also calorie counting. You have to be very strict get protein a higher priority. i do best on a high protein low to moderate carb, and moderate fat diet. High carb do not work for me. Geneticaly my roots are from central anatolia and i was born and still live in germany. The weather of the two regions do have one thing in common. The ground freezes in winter. So my ancestors were dependent on animal products while in spring and summer they could eat more plant products. In winter 2:1 protein, carb ratio in summer 1:1 or 2:1,5 protein to carb. Sometimes i eat more carbs but in the long run my body does not like carbs that much.
And also get yourself a good protein powder, if you want to increase calories do it with protein.

I will share my case, I hope it helps someone :D
As a skinny fat I was on the yo-yo endless knot without going anywhere defined. But one day I realized it had to stop. I bought a food scale and started measuring my calories. Then I figured out my maintenance so it was time to decide whether to bulk or cut. I read so many articles and found some interesting information. I decided to cut.
Overall I have been in a cut for 3 months (yep, long time. We skinnyfat guys tend to subestimate the amount of fat we have. Believe me) and I keep adding weight on my training sessions. I have made progress and right now I still look somewhat skinyfat BUT I can also see some definition on my core, slightly but it feels good to finally verify that there is something at least.
The most important thing is diet! Measure all the food you eat and then just wait
    Why I took that approach?
First, I did it because I was tires of looking at my gut. Know is way less gut and I can see definition so it also keeps you motivated to see your little muscles haha
Second, the best way to see gains is by removing the layer of fat you have over your muscles, in other word --> even if you have poor muscles, by always progressing in the gym and eating on a deficit you will morph
Third, when I get to a level of body fat i am happy with I will start to bulk. And the best thing is that with a low body fat percentage then your body hormonal balances is more favorable to put muscle than fat, I will increase just above maintenance (maybe 100 cal extra) to slowly progress.
Yes, we don't have the perfect bodies and the path for change is really difficult, sometimes you feel with no energy, sometimes you feel tired. But you go, you pursue your goals and you will get them!
This is my story, I started with a cut and I feel way more mentally relieved now! I know you can!

    • @lazo3251
      @lazo3251 2 роки тому +2

Recomp is a much better idea. I am doing right now at 205 lbs at 20% body fat and my rate of progress is the same as when I was gaining 1 lb per week. Switching constantly between bulking and cutting is a waste of time. That is why Vitruvian Physique looks much smaller than AlphaDestiny, because he wastes a lot of time cutting and bulking.
For 20% body fat, recomp is the way.
For 15% body fat and below, lean bulk is the way.
The only people who need to cut are people who are overweight or obese.

Hello! I have been having an on-off relationship with training since 2018. In the beginning (2-3 months), I did as you advised - my diet was oriented around maintenance while my training was based on compound movements. However, the progress was only mediocre. In summer, I began to bulk in addition to a stricter training plan, and although I definitely increased my fat percentage, I can also see progress in muscle growth. My experiences aside, my question is, how could you expect to build muscle without a calorie surplus? Wouldn't you necessarily have to bulk in order to stimulate muscle growth more efficiently? I'd love to hear your take, since you are more knowledgeable than me on this.

Im skinny fat. I have been skinny fat for the last 1.5 years.(Im17now). I wheighted 65kg on 185cm. I went into a bulk, I made a mistake and started strenght program- in my case, SS, I did that for 5.5 month or so(before than I trained for 5 month incorrectly). My lifts increased, but my belly just got worse, and I coudnt tell if I gained some muscle or not(84kg, 185cm). Since May 2020, I have been on a cut (home gym, basic equipment, so I continued with the ss with some more volume), now, after 5.5 month(november) Im still skinny fat. 74kg on 186cm. Im about to go on a very clean bulk(1%-1.5% body wheight gain per month), with *hypertrophy program*, hopefully I will build muscle and finelly get rid of that belly and be healthy.

Would you say hitting bigger muscle groups through exercises such as bench press, squats or dead-lifting is preferred over doing isolation exercises; as - due to the sheer amount of muscle involved -you'd be able to get the body to react in all these different parts of the body and promote subcutaneous fat storage there or are there other ways to make specific parts more susceptible to subcutaneous fat storage?
What would be appropriate rest to promote the body to respond in this way, to build muscle and store subcutaneous fat - would it be longer than when just trying to build muscle?

No hate, I'm a little confused by this, you say that the fat around the belly, the love handles/floaty jiggly bit is visceral fat and will move to surround the muscles of the limbs etc.. with training, but that fat is not visceral fat it is already subcutaneous fat surrounding the core muscles, if it was visceral you wouldn't be able to jiggle it as it's covering the organs. If you're training you're core as much as the rest of your other muscles, why would it prefer to move away from there, is it that it just becomes more evenly distributed?
