  • The Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International recently caused some controversy by contradicting their support for the drone industry and a ban on Chinese-made UAV's. Are they a wolf in sheep's clothing, or do they truly want the best for the industry?

      @conorstewart2214 3 місяці тому +3

Exactly and where are those phones made? Who runs some of the social media sites? Games? They could find out so much about you through your phone but how much can they realistically find out about you just from knowing where you flew your drone and maybe getting a few pictures at most?
In what world is people just flying drones about a national security risk? Even if they stream the live video straight to china how is that a huge national security risk? All sensitive sites should have security and no fly zones in place anyway.
The are just making up excuses to ban Chinese drones, it has never been about national security. If there was a security risk then just expose it. Show what information DJI is collecting and storing, if they could do that then they would have a much easier time banning them as people wouldn’t want them anymore anyway. So far their evidence of it being a security risk is just “trust me bro”.
Edit: if they are that worried about drones capturing highly sensitive information then their information isn’t secure enough. An actual Chinese spy with a camera could likely do much more damage to national security.

Programmer in a San Francisco startup here. This is going to be unpopular to say here, but it's far too possible for a software driven device to cooperate with security restrictions and safeguards in normal operation, but to behave very differently if triggered covertly. Such backdoors could be detected, but it would be very difficult and expensive to police this effectively.

I'd really like to see a video put together on how the non-internet option can be set up and used? Maybe you can get the speaker who mentioned that to appear on a video with you to explain and show us how? I think the issue on geofencing is that anything that wasn't existing already could now be recorded as geofenced so DJI could technically be identifying new geofenced locations that it doesn't already have and be required to share those. It's the same when people get all upset because of privacy when someone is flying a UAV, after walking past 5 ring doorbells, being tracked on their phone, and any number of security cameras while they shop, drive and everything else.

So I'm back and I'll make my response about this situation. I am a professional info security consultant and have many years of experience, and I have 4 DJI drones and have been flying since 2016, using them all over the world. For the record, I would hate to see them banned for no good reason other than pure ignorance. Here's why I say that.
Let's cover a few facts that I don't think anyone is arguing about. 1) The Chinese have in recent years openly stated they are our enemies, and have been caught multitudes of times in the act of theft, infiltration, hacking, coercion, etc in attempts to bring the United States down. 2) Chinese government has unadulterated access to any company that resides in China, and they can make any demand to companies who are owned by Chinese citizens. DJI is a Chinese company owned by Chinese citizens.
The main problem, as I see it, is that people are acting on fear and greed...and have nothing to support either. While I like my DJI drones, if they were proven to be subversive, I'd takem' out and destroy them myself (that would be an expensive day). But the thing is, nobody has considered the appropriate alternative....security testing. I have not heard of or seen any results from someone performing security testing of DJI drones (but I've not recently looked either). I looked several years ago but found nothing...maybe someone has done it, but nobody seems to be considering it. You would need 4 types of analysis done...hardware, software, network & communications, & behavior (what it does while in operation). The idea behind this testing is to make sure no strange chips/devices have been installed on the boards, the software takes no unauthorized actions, that the devices (controller and drone) make no unauthorized/unneeded transmissions, and that the device doesn't do anything unauthorized while in flight (and maybe around other areas that could be considered sensitive). If this were done, you'd have a very reasonable conclusion on whether the drones were dangerous to national security. You'd have to do this on each drone model, one at a time, to 'certify' them for use. The hardware analysis would possibly be destructive, but I'm not a hardware *expert*, so not sure about that.
I would like to see a security analysis done on DJI drones. Maybe DJI could offer some to security teams, rather like Tesla does for hacking.
Last, let me address some misconceptions I hear people stating.
    1) I saw someone commenting on Google imagery. LoL...if only. What you would be using a drone for would be OPSEC, not trying to map out an area.
    2) 'Air Gap' this is an often misunderstood term, because to have a true 'air gap', you would have to A) conduct a security analysis like I specify above, and/or B) never be in range of ANY type of two way communications (like NFC). That's almost impossible to do in this day and age.
    3) Other devices. Hoping that people will fly their drones in an area that would allow the Chinese government to find the right information is a very difficult way of doing espionage. There are many much simpler ways for them to find information they could use...such as malware infected phones....which is something they HAVE been doing a lot. There are pretty much daily reports of Chinese nation state attempts to break into things. Also note that an American drone with poor security is just as dangerous...any company building ANY ELECTRONIC DEVICE should secure their products. And anyone who owns one should take it seriously as well.
    4) Finally, has nobody consulted Ukraine military regarding DJI drones? They've been using them in combat, against Chinese supported forces, for two years. I'm sure they could easily cover whether they've found DJI drones were insecure or caused problems for military forces while being flown.
That's my thoughts, your mileage may vary. Thanks for keeping up on the topic, Russ.

You are mistaken about geo fencing. It doesn't remove the chess piece off the table because it shows the outline. Geo fencing is a double edge sword, because it announces that something is being hidden, and the coordinates for the protected area can then easily be determined. Geo Fencing also has its own signature allowing bad actors to identify If the protected areas are military or civilian. This not only provides an outline of the chess piece it also tells you the color.

The givernment would pull the FCC licenses for DJI products. It wouldn't be illegal to own a DJI drone within the US, but it would be illegal to turn one on as that uses the radio spectrum.
If the government bans them, you can bet that they'll offer you $5 per drone as a buy back 'incentive'. They won't reimburse the actual costs because they simply don't have to. Any lawsuit forcing them would take years and millions of dollars to pursue, and in the end, each drown owner would get a check for 72 cents.

I don't update, usually that brings more restrictions not software improvements. If I need maps, they are available offline. I even have RID active via a module. I suppose a 3rd party could get my information, that would only be GPS and time as far as I know.

  • @ApolloTheDerg

Air gaps are not perfect, saying there is a zero percent chance of data leakage would be extremely wrong. Propriety chips, software, and not to mention hardware with radios is not something you can simply air gap. Do you know what your drone actually keeps as far as telemetry or could be sending over other networks without you having the slightest clue despite opting out of everything? Software and their companies lie, and you must not take their word, especially if it’s part of a proprietary hardware and software package.
I say this as a DJI owner in Utah, I don’t want it banned but you have to be realize DJI has access to more than you realize regardless of your consent. Same issue with tiktok uploading and having access to your phones clipboard history and able to swipe anything you copy including potential passwords.
Why aren’t we focusing on an American drone market that can match if not exceed the quality of DJI if we want to ban, and why isn’t this the focus. Let’s hold off of a ban until we have domestic companies and production of drone technology before we fully ban, let’s put more effort into screening allowed software patches, and let’s make sure we have a multitude of tests on the hardware to ensure the radios are not transmitting data when the device is not supposed to.
Also look into low energy Bluetooth mesh networks, things like AirTags use this to transmit data, and a ton of Amazon devices began doing this without broadly telling their owners behind a terms of service update.
Honestly we need to hold American companies to this level of scrutiny too, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, and beyond.

Any attempt to decouple from the global supply chain will hurt all companies and industries, and it is US and Chinese enterprises that will hurt the most. While US politicians are seeking to impose trade restrictions, US businesses are actually seeking to cooperate due to the enormous interests involved, and that such cooperation should be encouraged. This highly self destructive response by USA politicians on numerous Chinese products will only add to a series of economic problems such as inflation, unemployment and decline in living standards. These politicians don't represent their constituents or common sense whatsoever, they only represent their large corporate political donors.

I'm a simple guy, so I have a simple question: How on earth would a ban be enforced? if I recall correctly, this same legislation has been advanced two to three times before, and failed to gain ANY traction. It was stillborn, and they're trying once again to revive it. There is less and less enforcement nationwide of laws that actually have an impact; how would the Federal government ever enforce this? I'm not sure they're aware of the scope of responsibilities that would require on already thinly stretched agencies.

Honestly i see the dji ban strictly about the gov. contract competition market that skydio wanted all of the gov. contracts. How many officials are sponsored or own stock in skydio? I feel that's the main driving factor for the ban being we all know dji's thermal drones for instance are beyond better than anything skydio has out yet. Also there isn't any room for anyone within a gov. office status to talk about data security when our own gov. is the worlds greatest threat and collector of data from any and everyone. The ban I feel is strictly nothing more than a ploy to help make sure certain companies get to move to the top selling list as well as possibly even driving civilians out of being able to fly drones as it is period being we all know or dealt with someone that is just terrified of them to include gov. agencies.

I love my DJI drone . However I am a retired Ranger sergeant major. I can tell you in 2008 the Army had to send out a flash message for everyone to see all USB drive because the Chinese for years had been manufacturing them with the capability of sending data back the United States military had for years prior to this been using civilian Chinese manufactured USBS and they have been spying on us the whole time this fact is not disputable it happened. Anytime you do a firmware update information went back to China. I love my drone but we have to use our Common Sense here.
