Ha ha, brilliant. You have hit the nail on the head with what I see from people in the UK - Ikea is very popular, even though when you move it to a new house it is a dice roll to see if it survives intact. And hey, if it doesn't you can go and buy some shiny new fun stuff to go in the new house, and that is half the fun. I think you are right about it not being a priority for people to spend money on these things, especially over here - I've watched some furniture flipping channels before and I laugh at how much money they make on selling sofas after they basically just do a once-over with a wet and dry vacuum cleaner. It would never work over here, sofas (couches) and the like seem to have a way lower price ceiling.

Lol! Loved your take on cost of craftsmanship. Also the consume model. I'm in for the balance between art and function. ( Fun in function) Became a follower.

Thanks for the vid, gave me a chuckle.
I actually do like MCM and have several pieces in my house; however mine are actually from the 50’s but that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate other styles.
Keep up the great work, I enjoy your videos and especially enjoy the furniture you make.

If I ever come into money, I’m totally going to commission something from you, dealer’s choice. Nothing modern or simple but with the messiest of lines. Go nuts.

I think you're right, there's a disconnect between consumers and well made things, and the true costs of those things.

This mild mannered rant parallels my response to when I hear somebody mention how much he likes Shaker furniture. I counter (often internally) No, in fact, you like the modernized, simplified for industrial production pieces which parrot the Shaker aesthetic made in cherry without understanding the full range of Shaker output. And what you really like is the idea that a Shaker piece can be completed in a weekend by a Bostonian carpenter so it ought not to cost you much more than what you can find a strip mall

Like others, I share your rant. Seeing lots of "MCM" videos and the raves does make me wonder at times; what's so special about this? But, I also watch the growing use of lasers, CNC, etc and have to ask myself that eternal question; is that really woodworking? Yes, I do feel like an old man right now... Nice video

I save a lot of what I write in case it adds up to enough material to coherently put into book format but it hasn't yet.

Unfortunately, I can't do that. I've been informed that expressing a negative opinion about literally anything using any form of humor, is "snarking the values of others" and frowned upon in today's society. Nothing but sunshine and rainbows from here on out!

    I like Rob Cosman better.
Rob Cosman has a full head of luxurious flowing locks.
Rob Cosman has 10 children and a pontoon boat.
Rob Cosman makes videos demonstrating his own value vs snarking the values of others

      Yeah... Fair enough.
We should all strive to be as good as Rob Cosman. He is the gold standard, and, as you point out, he has a pontoon boat. Pretty hard to beat that.

@@themountaintopjoinersshop8422 my post was tongue in cheek - except for #3. No one ever benefitted their situation by deriding others. You knew this racket was tough going in. Stay positive and push through to the success you deserve.

      Gentlemen......that was brilliant!
As a maker and boater / water sports enthusiast of many decades, I struggle to decide what deserves my most pointed derision.........mid-century modern........or pontoon boats.
