In April they started live concerts at Sabaton's Europe Tour as a special guests, later they held more shows at Asian and Australian Tour and currently at The Babyklok Tour around the US and everyone were having a blast with this song, either you hate or love it, is a song with an official MV and some crazy amount of views and they don't wanna leave behind in any of their setlist. Dance choreography and metal had never been seen before and they somehow managed to make it works creating their unique own genre called kawaii-metal, mixing Jpop and heavy metal along with many more sub genres and rhythms, you'll have so much fun going through this journey. BabyMetal is a Japanese metal dance unit created in 2010 under another Jpop/Jrock group called Sakura Gakuin, they had 11 and 12 years old when started this and become independent after 2013, they created their own genre called kawaii-metal mixing Jpop with metal sound and different subgenres along with many more rhythms. Their name is a reference to a new genre and not related to their ages or "baby" faces, is a pun intended play words with "heavy-metal" which sounds similar to "baby-metal". They are: *SuMetal* lead vocalist, now 25. *MoaMetal* scream and dance, now 24. *YuiMetal* scream and dance, former member since 2018. *MomoMetal* scream and dance, she's 20 and is the new official member since April 1st recently. None of them are related. Great first reaction and welcome to the BABYMETAL Foxhole.🦊 BABYMETAL are like nothing you will have seen or heard before, you won't be able to put them in any one box like you can with virtually every other band in the world, they are one of a kind and they invented their own genre and style that nobody has been able to copy successfully (some have tried, none came close). 'Gimme Chocolate' is one song that smashes the different styles together rather than blending and mixing them more smoothly the way they will in most of their other songs, but that is deliberate. Well done picking this live performance where you got to see the Kami Band up close too. They are their supporting musicians - they are all male, in this one the guitarist you thought was a female was the late and very great Mikio Fujioka (RIP Jan 2018), Takayoshi Ohmura, BOH on bass and Hideki Aoyama on drums. The official video was what got them a lot of the initial attention, but that does not have the live audio or the Kami Band playing. BABYMETAL are Su-metal (lead vocalist) and Moametal and, since April 1st this year, Momometal (backing vocals, harmonies but mainly in charge of dance, leading the audience, getting everybody involved and joining in - audience participation is a huge part of what BABYMETAL are all about). The third original member (she was in the video you watched), Yuimetal, sadly left the band in October 2018 having been absent from the stage for the previous 12 months. She had ongoing (and undisclosed) health issues. Su and Moa continued as a duo for the next 4 or 5 years, supported by 3 dancers (the Avengers) dancing in the third spot (it was the same one, Momoko, from about February 2020 - they teased the reveal of a new third member in April - happily it was her, so she is all mic'd up and singing as well as dancing now). They are supported in live shows by the Kami Band - some of Japan's very best session musicians, each one of them a world class instrumentalist, as you could clearly see and hear. They were phased in gradually from October 2012. BABYMETAL had started in 2010 with little or no extra budget so they sang to a backing track at the start and when they started doing their own small shows guys in skeleton suits (known as Babybones) would pretend to play the instruments. The Kami Band played at a couple of festivals and the encores in some shows and became the full time support for all live shows at the start of 2014 and have been with BABYMETAL ever since - but only for live shows, they do not record the studio versions. In 2019 the Kami Band of the West (American musicians) were introduced and they have been supporting BABYMETAL on their more extended foreign tours since then. BABYMETAL formed in 2010 when Su was 12, Yui and Moa were 11. Kobametal (their producer) was able to put his idea into practice with the young girl (Suzuka Nakamoto) he had seen with her previous group who had so impressed him. She was perfect to front his idea of a fusion of metal with Jpop aesthetics. He got his chance to work with her when Su joined a newly formed group set up by the Amuse talent agency to coach and train about a dozen of the most talented 10 to 15 year old girls on their books in all aspects of entertainment (acting, singing, dancing, writing, stage management and so on) with a view to them finding what they might want to do to start or continue their careers in entertainment with Amuse when they reached 15 and would finish their compulsory education. By 2013, when it was time for Su to leave the group since she was 15. BABYMETAL had gained their own audience by then, so it was decided they should split from the group to be Su's vehicle as she furthered her career as a vocalist. In 2014 they started to tour outside of Asia and Japan for the first time coming to Europe and the US and since then they have won new fans all over the world and become internationally the most successful Japanese band ever - their 3rd album released in 2019 was the first by any Asian group to reach number 1 in the US Billboard Hard Rock charts. They have nearly 70 songs now, every one of them is different. They have songs in virtually every metal genre but will mix in other musical styles and genres with the metal. Some songs lean towards their pop roots others are just good hard metal and they do everything in between - so if you don't like one song no problem - try another, the chances are you'll love it. For another reaction how about their very first appearance in the UK? They were moved with just a couple of months notice from the original small side stage or tent they had been booked to play to the main stage at Sonisphere in 2014 as virtual unknowns. Their video for the song 'Gimme Chocolate' had gone viral and many who had seen it thought they were a joke or just a gimmick, so they faced a potentially hostile crowd - they were aged 16 and only just turned 15, could speak hardly any English and they had 25 minutes - 5 songs - to win over 50-60,000 UK metalheads. The last song of the set was 'Ijime, Dame, Zettai' (Bullying, No More, Forever) live at Sonisphere 2014, you can find it on the official channel and you will see and hear for yourself as they walk off stage at the end what the crowd thought of them.

The backing band you see in the background are known as the KAMI band The band consisted of the late Mikio Fujioka, Takahashi Umaura on guitars, BOH on BASS, and Hiedeki Ayoama on drums. BABYMETAL consits of Queen SU-METAL lead vocals, Scream and dance are MOAMETAL, and YUIMETAL. YUI left BABYMETAL in October of 2018. Mikio Fujioka passed away on 01/05/2018 .

Thanks for this reaction, made a good choice to react to this live performance. You are right, it's hard to look away. Even for the haters (they had a good bunch of them in the past) it was hard to look away from Babymetal, it's a bit like watching a train accident for them. In part because Babymetal is not your average metal band. And in part because they got their success.

BABYMETAL is the best musical phenomenon I have ever experienced in my 68-year-long life. (Before BM, I was a stubborn jazz / funk lover) We say "Japan is the country obsessed by Rock Music". The history is very long and the obsession started in 1966 when Beatles visited Japan and held 5 concerts at Budokan. Speaking of hard rock / heavy metal music, a number of bands started to come to Japan since as early as 1970s : Led Zeppelin / Grand Funk Railroad (1971), Deep Purple (1972), Queen (1975), Kiss (1977), Cheap Trick / Van Halen / Scorpions (1978), Judas Priest (1978/79) and so on. Now, any type of rock can be enjoyed here, especially by many all-female or women-fronted bands. They are daughters of American / European rock, for sure. (Many are grand-daughters in terms of age.) Now try to wrap your mind around the idea that they taught Metallica how to do the dance when they went on tour with them, and Red Hot Chili Peppers performed this song with the girls when they went on tour together. Moa mentioned in interviews that she would like to teach the dance routine to the Metallica members. There's no evidence that ever actually happened. Also, they never went on tour with Metallica, although they did open for them in Seoul, Korea in early 2017.

They have performed at large metal events/concerts in front of 65,000+ skeptical metalheads in Europe (Glastonbury, Download, Sonisphere, etc), US, and Asia. They are the first Japanese band to perform at Wembley arena in the UK. Also, 20+ awards have been given to them. They have 60+ songs and each one is different from the other, so I hope you give the other songs a try. By the way, they have some really great heavy songs too, and I hope you like guitar solos, as well as bass and drum solos, like I do, because they have them too. BabyMetal began in 2010 there were Suzuka Nakamoto age 12 Moa Kikuchi and Yui Mizuno. Both Moa and Yui were 11 years old All three girls were friends and classmates who attended an idol school/group (Sakura Gakuin) founded in 2010 by Amuse Talent Agency for girls 10 to 15. Themed around school life (they attended regular school as well) the girls would learn and train at vocals, dancing, public speaking and etiquette, etc., graduate at age 15 and then move onto whatever entertainment path they chose or that suited their talents. Key Kobayashi was a music producer for Amuse and heard Suzuka sing at age 9 and was impressed with her strong vocals and stage presence. Kobayashi was a fan of heavy metal but believed that the genre had become stale and tired (especially in Japan) with metal bands getting old Kobayashi believed the genre needed to be reborn (BabyMetal means the birth of a new metal genre). Kobayashi felt that Suzuka had the ability to front a metal band and that her vocals and presence could withstand the metal guitars and drums. The fusion of Jpop and Metal began. He placed Moa and Yui as backup singers/dancers and a phenomenon was about to result. At first Amuse showed no interest and the girls had only financing from Kobayashi. They performed at strip malls and small venues using clothes borrowed from friends and family. No money for a real band they had friends dressed in homemade skeleton costumes pretending to play instruments to a backtrack. They became a sensation (these young ladies paid their dues). Amuse saw the potential and in 2012 hired the best session musicians Japan had to offer (The Kami Band) who tours with them today (now includes world class musicians from the USA for tours outside of Asia). I like this version of BABYMETAL. I don't like the current version (2024) that much. They are distancing themselves from the product that made them originally popular: Very cute girls singing fun songs with a metal band backing. Now they are all women in the 20s and "evolving" in their style. While I understand that motivation it doesn't make me want to listen to that "evolved" version of the group. Take the "baby" out of BABYMETAL group and it's a different product.

Great first reaction and welcome to the BABYMETAL Foxhole.🦊 BABYMETAL are like nothing you will have seen or heard before, you won't be able to put them in any one box like you can with virtually every other band in the world, they are one of a kind and they invented their own genre and style that nobody has been able to copy successfully (some have tried, none came close).
'Gimme Chocolate' is one song that smashes the different styles together rather than blending and mixing them more smoothly the way they will in most of their other songs, but that is deliberate. Well done picking this live performance where you got to see the Kami Band up close too. They are their supporting musicians - they are all male, in this one the guitarist you thought was a female was the late and very great Mikio Fujioka (RIP Jan 2018), Takayoshi Ohmura, BOH on bass and Hideki Aoyama on drums.
The official video was what got them a lot of the initial attention, but that does not have the live audio or the Kami Band playing.
BABYMETAL are Su-metal (lead vocalist) and Moametal and, since April 1st this year, Momometal (backing vocals, harmonies but mainly in charge of dance, leading the audience, getting everybody involved and joining in - audience participation is a huge part of what BABYMETAL are all about).
The third original member (she was in the video you watched), Yuimetal, sadly left the band in October 2018 having been absent from the stage for the previous 12 months. She had ongoing (and undisclosed) health issues.
Su and Moa continued as a duo for the next 4 or 5 years, supported by 3 dancers (the Avengers) dancing in the third spot (it was the same one, Momoko, from about February 2020 - they teased the reveal of a new third member in April - happily it was her, so she is all mic'd up and singing as well as dancing now).
They are supported in live shows by the Kami Band - some of Japan's very best session musicians, each one of them a world class instrumentalist, as you could clearly see and hear. They were phased in gradually from October 2012. BABYMETAL had started in 2010 with little or no extra budget so they sang to a backing track at the start and when they started doing their own small shows guys in skeleton suits (known as Babybones) would pretend to play the instruments.
The Kami Band played at a couple of festivals and the encores in some shows and became the full time support for all live shows at the start of 2014 and have been with BABYMETAL ever since - but only for live shows, they do not record the studio versions.
In 2019 the Kami Band of the West (American musicians) were introduced and they have been supporting BABYMETAL on their more extended foreign tours since then.
BABYMETAL formed in 2010 when Su was 12, Yui and Moa were 11. Kobametal (their producer) was able to put his idea into practice with the young girl (Suzuka Nakamoto) he had seen with her previous group who had so impressed him. She was perfect to front his idea of a fusion of metal with Jpop aesthetics.
He got his chance to work with her when Su joined a newly formed group set up by the Amuse talent agency to coach and train about a dozen of the most talented 10 to 15 year old girls on their books in all aspects of entertainment (acting, singing, dancing, writing, stage management and so on) with a view to them finding what they might want to do to start or continue their careers in entertainment with Amuse when they reached 15 and would finish their compulsory education.
By 2013, when it was time for Su to leave the group since she was 15. BABYMETAL had gained their own audience by then, so it was decided they should split from the group to be Su's vehicle as she furthered her career as a vocalist.
In 2014 they started to tour outside of Asia and Japan for the first time coming to Europe and the US and since then they have won new fans all over the world and become internationally the most successful Japanese band ever - their 3rd album released in 2019 was the first by any Asian group to reach number 1 in the US Billboard Hard Rock charts.
They have nearly 70 songs now, every one of them is different. They have songs in virtually every metal genre but will mix in other musical styles and genres with the metal. Some songs lean towards their pop roots others are just good hard metal and they do everything in between - so if you don't like one song no problem - try another, the chances are you'll love it.
For another reaction how about their very first appearance in the UK? They were moved with just a couple of months notice from the original small side stage or tent they had been booked to play to the main stage at Sonisphere in 2014 as virtual unknowns. Their video for the song 'Gimme Chocolate' had gone viral and many who had seen it thought they were a joke or just a gimmick, so they faced a potentially hostile crowd - they were aged 16 and only just turned 15, could speak hardly any English and they had 25 minutes - 5 songs - to win over 50-60,000 UK metalheads.
The last song of the set was 'Ijime, Dame, Zettai' (Bullying, No More, Forever) live at Sonisphere 2014, you can find it on the official channel and you will see and hear for yourself as they walk off stage at the end what the crowd thought of them.
This is the very video that made me a fan back in the day. Came across it while browsing UA-cam for Colbert clips and it was just posted that day. It made me a fan for life and just yesterday I saw them live for the 18th time.
The backing band you see in the background are known as the KAMI band The band consisted of the late Mikio Fujioka, Takahashi Umaura on guitars, BOH on BASS, and Hiedeki Ayoama on drums. BABYMETAL consits of Queen SU-METAL lead vocals, Scream and dance are MOAMETAL, and YUIMETAL. YUI left BABYMETAL in October of 2018. Mikio Fujioka passed away on 01/05/2018 .

"Gimme Chocolate" is a fun song about the girls wanting to eat chocolate and being a little worried about gaining some weight but it's also so freaking metal instrumentally and that juxtaposition is what makes this song very polarizing, specially on first time reactions/listens.

You are right, it's hard to look away. Even for the haters (they had a good bunch of them in the past) it was hard to look away from Babymetal, it's a bit like watching a train accident for them.
In part because Babymetal is not your average metal band. And in part because they got their success.

BABYMETAL is the best musical phenomenon I have ever experienced in my 68-year-long life. (Before BM, I was a stubborn jazz / funk lover) We say "Japan is the country obsessed by Rock Music". The history is very long and the obsession started in 1966 when Beatles visited Japan and held 5 concerts at Budokan. Speaking of hard rock / heavy metal music, a number of bands started to come to Japan since as early as 1970s : Led Zeppelin / Grand Funk Railroad (1971), Deep Purple (1972), Queen (1975), Kiss (1977), Cheap Trick / Van Halen / Scorpions (1978), Judas Priest (1978/79) and so on. Now, any type of rock can be enjoyed here, especially by many all-female or women-fronted bands. They are daughters of American / European rock, for sure. (Many are grand-daughters in terms of age.)

There's no evidence that ever actually happened.
Also, they never went on tour with Metallica, although they did open for them in Seoul, Korea in early 2017.

BABYMETAL is a Japanese kawaii (cute) metal group (a metal subgenre that they created) that formed in 2010 when the 3 girls were 11-12 years old (yes, they were very young), and since then have performed with, toured with, or opened for Metallica, Korn, Sabaton, Bring Me The Horizon, Dragonforce, Guns N' Roses, Lady Gaga, Rob Halford of Judas Priest (there's a great youtube video of their performance with Rob at a metal award show), and Red Hot Chili Peppers (there is a youtube video of them performing Gimme Chocolate with RHCP, as well as with Korn, and DragonForce), to name a few of many. They have performed at large metal events/concerts in front of 65,000+ skeptical metalheads in Europe (Glastonbury, Download, Sonisphere, etc), US, and Asia. They are the first Japanese band to perform at Wembley arena in the UK. Also, 20+ awards have been given to them. They have 60+ songs and each one is different from the other, so I hope you give the other songs a try. By the way, they have some really great heavy songs too, and I hope you like guitar solos, as well as bass and drum solos, like I do, because they have them too. Also, they are currently on another world tour that includes many dates here in the USA, and released a new amazing album just a few months ago! BabyMetal began in 2010 there were Suzuka Nakamoto age 12 Moa Kikuchi and Yui Mizuno. Both Moa and Yui were 11 years old All three girls were friends and classmates who attended an idol school/group (Sakura Gakuin) founded in 2010 by Amuse Talent Agency for girls 10 to 15. Themed around school life (they attended regular school as well) the girls would learn and train at vocals, dancing, public speaking and etiquette, etc., graduate at age 15 and then move onto whatever entertainment path they chose or that suited their talents.
Key Kobayashi was a music producer for Amuse and heard Suzuka sing at age 9 and was impressed with her strong vocals and stage presence. Kobayashi was a fan of heavy metal but believed that the genre had become stale and tired (especially in Japan) with metal bands getting old Kobayashi believed the genre needed to be reborn (BabyMetal means the birth of a new metal genre). Kobayashi felt that Suzuka had the ability to front a metal band and that her vocals and presence could withstand the metal guitars and drums. The fusion of Jpop and Metal began. He placed Moa and Yui as backup singers/dancers and a phenomenon was about to result.
At first Amuse showed no interest and the girls had only financing from Kobayashi. They performed at strip malls and small venues using clothes borrowed from friends and family. No money for a real band they had friends dressed in homemade skeleton costumes pretending to play instruments to a backtrack. They became a sensation (these young ladies paid their dues). Amuse saw the potential and in 2012 hired the best session musicians Japan had to offer (The Kami Band) who tours with them today (now includes world class musicians from the USA for tours outside of Asia).

Yui Mizuno left BabyMetal in 2018 due to health reasons and at their concert in Yokohama on April 1 it was announced that a permanent third member Momoko Okazaki (who is also a graduate of Sakura Gakuin and has been appearing with them LIVE since 2019 after Yui's departure) has officially become the third member.
Their new album in my opinion that released March 24 is amazing with so many different styles.

I like this version of BABYMETAL. I don't like the current version (2024) that much. They are distancing themselves from the product that made them originally popular: Very cute girls singing fun songs with a metal band backing. Now they are all women in the 20s and "evolving" in their style. While I understand that motivation it doesn't make me want to listen to that "evolved" version of the group. Take the "baby" out of BABYMETAL group and it's a different product.
Wrong version but still cool to see. This song is mid at best, have fun down the Fox hole they have a lot of great songs like...
