The lack of reaction from 3 kids when the mom "died" took me right out of it. It was very hard to buy them as her children. I'm a full grown adult and when my mom passes, I'll be hysterical. Let alone all 3 children amounting to a few tears between them.

damn Sarah ripped into this movie lol. i was quite entertained and i loved it. the opening scene made my jaw drop. I thought the high rise building concept created a scenario where they were actually trapped rather than using the detox thing as a plot device to keep them in that cabin. Thought the main deadite was freaking terrifying, especially the line "open up now"! Her acting was super. We thought the gore was a lot of fun. We weren't a fan of the mega deadite creature at the end, but loved the wood chipper idea.

I agree on every point! The apartment setting was somehow scarier to me because there's LITERALLY nowhere else to go. At least in the woods, you can take off in any direction. They were trapped hundreds of feet above the ground 😭 Not that it would make a difference in the end regardless 😅 but this setting made it more realistic imo. & YESSSS she was SO creepy. "Mommy's with the maggots now" 👹 PLEASE STOP

I loved it personally. I do think they could have done a LOT more with the setting though. Have a massacre that goes through multiple apartments on multiple floors, give us the chaotic frenzy that they only hinted at with the peephole. Instead they went for a more intimate family story, and I don't hate that choice but I was left wanting more.

I thought this was the Hollywood studio Conjuring-verse version of an Evil Dead movie. It wasn't "bad", but it was a very generic script and the line delivery from the child actors was very awkward. This whole movie felt manufactured and it didn't go nearly as hard with the gore as the trailer made it out to be. I thought the actress playing the mom carried this entire movie on her back, I was hooked to the screen whenever she was on, but with the rest, I was kind of just waiting for the next scene. Also, they didn't do nearly as much as they could've with the building setting since everyone was inside the apartment the entire time.

I thought it was gonna be more like the 2013 one, and the mom was going to somehow come back to normal like Mia did. When she didn't, and then the sister and brother transformed into Deadites too, I felt bad for the poor little girl. She lost almost her whole family.

It felt generic, like it could have been any sort of possession movie but it just so happened to be picked up by the Evil Dead franchise. I couldnt get over the way the book was found... and how the boy was just blasting that shit on his DJ equipment and nobody ... came in and told him to stop? ?? ? it just fell short for me and I'm glad I'm not alone I swear everybody else seems to think this is the best horror movie released recently

I might be one of the few here that mostly agree with your review of this. It was fun and I'm glad I saw it, but it could have been so much better. Dwelling on things that didn't matter (like the eye horror scenes and the overlong part near the end I won't spoil) while zipping through stuff that could have been better (like the cheese grater we saw for like 2 seconds) was an odd choice. Parts felt shoehorned in too.
But again, it was fun. Much like Sarah, I'd watch it again. It just should have been better.

I really appreciated Fern’s insight. She seemed to have a lot of thoughts on this movie & pointed out some key elements.
All seriousness, I love how this was a family review for a horror that was about a family lol. I had the same exact thoughts as you did. Especially with the “oh this will come in handy later on” scenes. I was over it lol. I want to point out that Stephen King is a giant fan of Evil Dead. I think he says it’s his favorite franchise & he’s the reason Evil Dead 2 got its budget & was made so I feel like all of The Shining homages were a nod to him in a way. I’m just guessing that that’s why though. Great review, love your videos! You’re a huge inspiration to me.

I'm so glad to see someone else who has criticisms for this movie. I loved the opening scene so much, and I loved the mother deadite throughout, but the rest just didn't work for me. The setting was strangely isolated given its L.A. location, the bank vault explanation didn't really feel cohesive, and I just couldn't connect to hardly any of the characters (the kids especially). Plus, what was with the lame monster situation??? It wasn't a terrible movie, but I think generic was the perfect word for it. After the previous Evil Dead... Let's just say it had some huge shoes too fill, and I feel like it just totally missed the mark. Now, if they would have somehow thrown the mother deadite into the opening scene/setting and run with that, I think it could have been something spectacular. I was starting to feel like I was the only person who felt a bit let down by this one.

I read the full script of Evil Dead 2013 before it came out. Something that got changed in the movie which really dissappointed me was the scene of the rise of the abomination, the Mega Deadit.
The abomination was written as an amalgamation of all the dead characters stuck together.
I assume they just couldn't create it without usung CGI back then and now they just put it in Rise which also made sense due to the family theme of the movie.

It's not as good as 2013 but it's fun and gory. The foreshadowing ruined it for me. Too much of it!Also when I saw it at cinema I fully didn't understand the first person camera in the parking lot at the end. Like how was it still there? I assumed the cat from the vent was attacking which would've been the most hilariously camp way to end this. Like I know it'd be dumb but I wanted that cat to attack so bad 😂

It can all fit when you take the TV show into consideration with the whole time travel angle.
Remember after Ash relives the ED2 timeline there is a scene where a woman discovers the book; she could possibly be the girl from the beginning of Evil Dead.
I know it doesn't fit 100% but with the tangled canon of the other movies it can work.

There were scenes and moments that I liked, a lot of things I didn't like, but overall I just wasn't a big fan. Not to mention I feel like they showed way too many of the really good scenes in the trailer, so there was really nothing left for me to look forward to? They hyped up that cheese grater, even tweeting images of the grater and putting it on a poster..but it was one swipe down the leg and it wasn't even that damaging. However, the ending kinda made up for it even though I wish they showed more of the creature instead of hiding in the dark. I'm guessing it didn;t look very convincing so they just kept it in shadows. The overall final act was good, though. I agree about the writing, it wasnt that great. The dmons didn't have that classic Evil Dead feel to them. They weren't evil enough, not witty enough...IDK, they were just off. I liked the building itself, I thought it looked pretty cool but I think it was underutilized. 3/4 of the movie happened in the single apartment. Like you, I didn't hate it and will likely watch it again. I just wanted a bit more. I'm hoping the fact that it brought in a ton of money will allow them to hire a better director and cast for the next one.

I really liked the movie, but I do also agree with a lot of what you guys said. It felt to rushed. Felt like there were a ton of random people thrown in there with zero character development just to kill off. Also didn’t really get the flex of killing a bunch of kids in this one lol. Felt like there was also some untapped potential. They definitely should have made it longer. I do like though how it just got right into things in the beginning and was mostly non stop from start to finish.

I completely agree on the Necronomicon being in a city setting. It’s weird.
Imagine they get it from their cousin Mia from the 2013 film. Or even Uncle Ash….

Director Lee Cronin stated in an interview that 6,500 liters (or 1,720 gallons) of fake blood were used for the movie.
The film was originally meant to release exclusively through HBOMax via direct-to-streaming, but it performed so strongly during test screenings that the studio decided to release it theatrically instead.
The pizza place is called Henrietta's. A reference to Henrietta Knowby, the demon in the basement in Evil Dead 2.
Inside the cabin in the prologue of the film is a ticking clock on the wall. It's the exact same clock as the one Cheryl is drawing in The Evil Dead(1981).
To get into the character of an alternate personality, actress Alyssa Sutherland took inspiration from Jim Carrey's performance as Stanley Ipkiss in The Mask (1994).
    Shot in chronological order
The film opens with the sound of a fly. This is the same exact sound used throughout different entries dating all the way back to the original, and has become a tradition to appear at least once.
On the 'Extra Vision' podcast, director Lee Cronin revealed that all the characters were named after actors that had previously appeared in the Evil Dead films.
Brings the Evil Dead back to New Line Cinema, who distributed the original film's theatrical release in 1983.
If you look at Ellie's arms, they are wrapped in tattoos of Vines. This is a nod to Cheryl from 'The Evil Dead', Bobby Joe from 'Evil Dead II' and Mia from 'Evil Dead', who all were attacked and bound by vines.
Is the only Evil Dead film to not feature the 1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale vehicle.
On the show "Extra Vision" director Lee Cronin shared that the name of the building the movie takes place in. The "Monde" is an anagram of Demon.
In the beginning of the movie, Teresa reads the novel Wuthering Heights while Jessica lies on the bed before her. While Teresa continues to read the lines, Jessica hijacks in-between and starts speaking aloud what Teressa read. She starts with a normal tone which changes to demonic voice with the sentence "let me in." This is analogous to the first film 'The Evil Dead (1981)' by Sam Raimi as how the first deadite was introduced. While Linda and Shelly play the game of 'spades', Cheryl intervenes in-between and starts calling out the correct cards in order without looking at them. Before calling out the last card, her voice had already changed to demonic.
"Although there's no Oldsmobile Delta [in the movie], the chainsaw in the movie is exactly the same colour as the Oldsmobile Delta." -Lee Cronin, referring to Sam Raimi's yellow car "Easter egg" that has appeared in all of the Evil Dead films to date (as well as many other of Raimi's films)
Mark Mitchinson (Mr. Fonda) also appeared in Ash vs Evil Dead as Crosby, the leader of a militia that Ash's crew crosses paths with.
This is the last film to feature the 2021 variant of the opening Warner Bros./New Line Cinema logo consisting of both the blue WB shield and silver New Line Cinema logo. It is also the last time both logos appear together before the split and New Line Cinema's revival.
Kassie's friend Staffani is an obtuse throwback to the dagger with a skull as its handle in The Evil Dead and Evil Dead II. It is used as optimistically by our protagonists and is equally ineffective.
The second Evil Dead film that doesn't have Bruce Campbell as a main character.
Mark Mitchinson (which is acting like Mr. Fonda) are also the voice of the priest (Marcus Littleton) in the Book of The Dead recordings in the movie.
Lily Sullivan based Beth's accent on Milla Jovovich
The novel Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë is featured in the film's opening minutes. This is the second horror film within the year to reference a Brontë sister novel, as Jane Eyre was briefly shown in Barbarian (2022).
When the films title card appears you can see it also reflected by the lake below.
The sound of Ellie biting out a man's eyeball in the hallway is actually an audio recording of Bruce Campbell furiously biting into an apple.
Bruce Campbell cameo: In the first of the three records Danny plays, Bruce can be heard saying "Destroy it! It's called the Book of the Dead for a reason!" At the Beyond Fest premiere, director Lee Cronin suggested Campbell could be playing Ash again in the recording as the series has had multiple instances of Ash going back in time and encountering the Naturom Demonto / Necronomicon Ex-Mortis.
In a homage to previous Evil Dead films, Ellie is possessed in an elevator that restrains her by violently wrapping electrical wires around her arms, legs, and neck in a manner similar to how trees and branches restrained Cheryl, Bobby Joe, and Mia from The Evil Dead (1981), Evil Dead II (1987), and Evil Dead (2013) respectively when they were possessed
Beth saying "Come get some" to the demon creature while holding a chainsaw is an homage to Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) saying the same line while holding a shotgun in the S-Mart ending of Army of Darkness, the final film of the original Evil Dead Trilogy.
Director Lee Cronin confirmed online that the cat seen and heard in the vents of the apartment complex does in fact survive the events of the film
The deadites make a few references to previous films in their dialogue. They say everyone will be "Dead by Dawn" and Ellie tells Beth "I'll swallow your soul"
One of the lines being played on the record states that "3 volumes of the book" exist. 1st volume: The original Sam Raimi/Bruce Campbell, 2nd volume: 2013 remake, 3rd volume: Evil Dead Rise. Thus, this makes the whole series canon.
The main three deadites of the film all have different eye colors. Ellie has glowing silver eyes, Bridget has golden yellow and Danny has pupil less white. Whilst Ellie's eye color is unique to her deadite, Bridget's is a reference to the 2013 Remake and their deadites (which all had yellow eyes) whilst Danny is a reference to the original deadites, who all had white eyes.
The scene in the elevator where the blood starts to fill behind the lit buttons mirrors the scene in the original when the projector begins to fill with blood.
During the hallway attack Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) bites off the eye of one of the residents and spit it to the mouth of another. This action is very similar to a scene in Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn (1987).
The tree surgeon truck is named "Fonda's", possibly as a nod to Bridget Fonda who appeared as Ash's girlfriend in the opening flashback scene in Army of Darkness.
Aside from the obvious tide of blood coming from the elevator, there are other references to Stanley Kubrick's The Shining (1980). At the beginning of the movie there is a fast flight through the woods just like the one used in the original Evil Dead movies and serie to symbolize the movement of the demonic entities. In one moment it flies over a lake, very similar to the beginning of The Shining. Later, when Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) is left outside the apartment, Beth (Lily Sullivan) is holding the entrance door very similar to how Jack Nicholson does it when Shelley Duvall locks him up in the pantry. The same shot from bottom to top is used.
Unlike the previous films, which are all set in a cabin in the woods, this installment takes place in the city, with a protagonist other than Ashley Williams.
Beth, as well as David from the 2013 remake of Evil Dead, are the only protagonists to not lose a hand in the fight against Evil.
The color of the chainsaw used in the final act of the film is yellow unlike the standard red colored one used in every Evil Dead film
When Beth and Kassie fall from the elevator through the river of blood, Beth tries to wake up Kassie as Steve tried to wake up his daughter Carol Anne in the movie Poltergeist (1982)
