i think when most ppl refer to Scream in terms of plot twists they are referring to the fact that there were TWO killers... not that billy loomis was one of them. i remember how shocked i was the first time to find out there were 2! might be my personal favorite plot twist of all time
I totally agree with this but I would say the even bigger plat twist in Scream is the intro when Drew Barry more's character is killed off - it may be very much part of the Scream franchise formula now but nobody saw that coming when the film first came out. She's even right upfront on the movie poster.
i would honestly argue that billy was a plot twist? the whole movie we’re suspecting him! sidney suspects him! when we see him stabbed in the bedroom at stu’s house, it’s a fake out because now we the audience are supposed to think “omg it actually wasn’t him we’ve been wrong all along!!” and then they get us again with the real reveal lol. so maybe it’s not that surprising since the fake out was so quick and towards the end, but on a first watch I think it successfully blew my mind 🥸

As a "mentally ill" person, I believe it has a very important place in horror. There is little scarier than losing your mind. It is the idea that you can't even trust yourself to be a reliable narrator, taking away the last bit of control a protagonist would have.
When it shows how horrifying mental illness is for the person experiencing it, it's great and very effective. I just don't like the 'mental illness makes you violent' tropes and the constantly inaccurate DID/MPD representations. It just happens too often in films and continues the negative stigmas of mental health.
@Jessie Smyth DID in media is a very thin line, because half the time it feels like they aren't even purposefully using the illness (rather instead wanting the concept of multiple people inside a single "host" body, and the other half is when they actually try and use it but are unaware of how it actually works. DID is a trauma response, so I automatically find it weird when it is used in a horror because an "evil" alter that is a murder... just hadn't been documented and adds to the stigma?
I loved the fact that my teacher in 8th grade let us watch the sixth sense on the last few days of school and when my class got to the twist we all collectively lost our 12 year old minds 😭😭😭
I was walking into the cinema to watch The Sixth Sense when a bunch of teenagers walking by said VERY LOUDLY 'I can't believe he was dead the whole time!' Fuming. I was fuming.
The plot twist in A Tale of Two Sisters was predictable, but it remains one of my favorite movies because even though you can figure it out early on… it absolutely does not make that movie any less terrifying.
The others has to me my favorite plot twist. Not only is the twist so good but when Nicole Kidmans character realizes what she had done to her kids and she’s sitting there crying I was crying too. That really hit me

I agree with you about the abuse of mental health tropes in horror movies. the other thing that really annoys me as a mental health professional, is poorly done scenes that don't understand procedure in modern mental health facilities. For example, the first death scene in Smile, that wrecked that movie for me.

I watched The Village for the first time last week thanks to you 😂 I had years of hearing about it without spoilers but knowing the gist so my expectations were managed. I guessed the twist so quickly which was my own fault for taking so long to watch it…but still loved it!
God you don't get how glad I am for you to point out the shutter island stuff, completely agree. I think people who watch horror films definitely have seen so much of that exact kind of thing play out, while all the more film bro-y types (definitely would stilll personally be in that category too lol) will insist its the most revolutionary thing ever. I saw the twist from literally the first scene on the boat with the way its choppily edited,, its cool and well done on that level but so tedious to then have to sit there for 2 hours watching it unfold the exact way you expect
Hot take: There is no twist in The Sixth Sense. It's right in front of you the whole time. M. Knight never misdirects you or tries to fool you. You do it all yourself. The real twist is just your own misguided expectation.
my fav plot twist of all time is from the south korean movie "forgotten", everything that gets revealed in the second half had me literally crying from shock lmao (it's also very depresing and tragic)
You should've added orphan first kill as well cuz that plot twist blew my mind. I remembered my theater was screaming "What!!!!" Obviously the second movie isn't scary unlike the first one, but the second one is so fun to rewatch tbh
Yeah, that twist was great; I was wondering how they could make the movie interesting and they did. I've seen it done in other places as well (including the TV show _The Family_ and I think in one episode of _Alert: Missing Persons Unit_ ).
This seems like an interesting premise for a video, unfortunately I think something happened to the audio. There's a static buzz that I was unable to tune out. Always happy to see a video from you and I'm leaving a comment to appease the algorithm. 🌼
I wish I could have watched Sixth Sense blind! My dad sat me down to watch it when I was in my teens, and his ex joined us at the beginning of the movie and said "oh you're watching Sixth Sense? I still can't believe he's dead the whole time. Isnt it great?" I've never seen my dad get so angry in my entire life 😅 Still loved the movie but the worst experience 💔🙄
This isn't a horror but an amazing twist in a movie I absolutely LOVE is Perfect Stranger starring Halle Berry and Bruce Willis. It has like 3 twists and it literally destroyed my brain when I saw it years ago, still a favourite of mine.
I loved the ending of Dead And Buried when they show the sheriff one of the town's films and it turns out he was murdered and turned into a zombie too but he didn't remember it! Good list and cool video Sarah!👉😃👈
Oddly I guessed the twist to Sutter Island when I saw the trailer. Becasue the unreliable narrator twist was so common around that time, I immediately guessed that. However it had two great mini twists in the movie that I LOVED. The bit where you see him pulling the gun from a nazi who's trying to kill themselves, early on seems like an act of mercy. However later in the movie it's revealed he wasn't being merciful, he didn't think they deserved a quick death after what he saw. And of course the very last line in the movie, implying that he's completely sane at the end, he's going to be lobotomized on purpose because he's so haunted by his past was a fantastic final twist.
for me, it was for certain The Others because it was my first big plot twist like it and I didn't see it coming AND I still wanted to watch it again, just to see it from a different perspective.
I'm one of the few people who has a "meh" perspective on Cabin in the Woods so I might be biased, but I was surprised you put it at the top for plot twists. Although I didn't know EXACTLY what the people behind the scenes were doing, we knew about them from the beginning and that everything happening to the other characters was intentional. I think I would have been more shocked had we ONLY gotten the cabin's perspective until they finally broke into the facility, and then see everyone at work.
I agree about identity. I remember everyone thinking the twist was unique but I just thought it cheated the audience. It’s almost like saying the whole thing was a dream.. but worse. I loved The Village. It’s one of M Nights most underrated but when I first saw the trailer I knew they were on modern times and I was fortunate enough to see this movie in the theaters. But I thought that the “twist” of it taking place in modern day was so obvious that it couldn’t be the real twist. There’s two other twists in this movie that are so subtle yet so powerful to the love story, that is the village. One of my favorite twists is one you didn’t mention and it’s insidious. What is the reasons why I like you because technically isn’t a twist it’s more of a theory. Which is, it’s not so much that Josh was finally possessed at the end of the movie but that he was already possessed from the start of the movie.
I remember watching shutter island for the first time and thinking “please don’t be crazy please don’t be crazy” because every plot twist during this time seemed to end with the main character having a mental illness It ruined the movie for me
“I don’t think people think of plot twists when they think of the Saw franchise.” That is genuinely close to the first thing that a lot of people think about with those movies.
I actually watched the sixth sense for the first time last night. It was my younger brother’s and I’s first ever watch through. I hated that already knew the twist, but I’m glad that my brother didn’t know. He was mind blown by the twist(still loved this movie so much; wanna rewatch it so I can search for the clues).
I like the Saw movies, and the reveal at the end of the first one was wholly unexpected. But was there actually a point to it? I remember one of the later films showing John putting himself in the room. But i don't remember if they ever explained what his presence added to the game.
A few of my favorites are, Insidious (I don't know if you would call it a plot twist 😅) but when you find out the dad was haunted I guess by the "women" in black. Dead Silence, God that movie gave me nightmares. And this isn't really a plot twist, but I really liked it, Annabelle Creation at the end when you find out the little girl is the woman who killed the woman in the first movie neighbors and them being her adoptive parents.
I think the other plot twist for Scream was to have Drew Barrymore's character killed off first. At the time she was kind of well known movie star and people may have saw her as the final girl.
Here to recommend Right at your Door and the Slumber Party Massacre remake for plot twists. Not great movies but I did enjoy the twists. Hope you're well x
I managed to avoid the spoiler for the Sixth Sense and watched it as a teen. Part way through the movie, my mum fell asleep. She woke up about 10 mins before the reveal of the twist and said "oh I forgot, he's dead isn't he?" We still joke about how she spoiled the twist :')
Us going in Okay M Night with twist being so predictable, and Shutter Island going to I'm tired were the only places that I strongly disagree with this tier list. I haven't seen some of these so I'll definitely watch them now. Thanks for this
i watched cloverfield lane not knowing about the cloverfield universe so i was not expecting the ending really and it was super enjoyable ! one of my fav movies ^
David Letterman gave away the _Sixth Sense_ twist on his very-popular show and pissed off millions of people. People often let things go, but that crossed the line and he had to apologize. 😂 I don't remember if I remembered what he said by the time I eventually saw it, but I'm sure I'd heard so many people discuss it that I couldn't possibly have been surprised. 🤔
Decided why the heck not? I'll rank them with you. And they're in order within the tiers. Never watched Fractured, His House, or Time Crimes (need to fix this) so can't really comment. ~ Top Tier: -Sixth Sense, the re-watchability from the twist is amazing. Still my favorite of all time. -Cabin in the Woods, I knew the twist only because I had to hunt it down. Still absolutely saw it, and I don't think I would have seen it from a mile away. -Identity, didn't see it coming and it was incredibly clever. Its use of mental illness didn't bother me because I never saw it illustrated that way before. -Saw, didn't see it coming from a mile away. Super impactful, too. -Us, prenominal twists. Saw the first one coming, but didn't see the second one coming, though I feel like I should have. -Get Out, such a dark twist. I feel like this did well what You're Next failed at. ~ Second Tier: -Shutter Island, I haven't watched this movie often, but I do like how the twist changes the movie. I can definitely appreciate it. -Blackcoat's Daughter, it was a fun twist to a fun movie. -Friday the 13th, I love that there are still people these days who don't know the twist. It's pretty unexpected. -Orphan, I feel like I should have seen it coming and didn't. I'm impressed. -10 Cloverfield Lane, should never have been a Cloverfield movie. But either way, never would have seen that twist coming. ~ Third Tier: -Scream, saw it coming and still really enjoyed it. It's the movie that got me back into horror movies again. ~ Fourth Tier: -The Others, am I the only one who saw it coming? And I found it as slow as Secret Window and just couldn't get into it. Far better acting, but the twist itself just didn't do it for me. -Sleep Away Camp, I didn't see the twist, but didn't feel like it added anything at all to the movie. -You're Next, maybe it's because I watched Ready or Not first, but saw it coming and couldn't get into it. -The Boy, saw it coming and just couldn't get into the twist. I almost feel like the twist made it worse. -Goodnight Mommy, saw it coming and just not enjoyable to me. -The Uninvited, I swear Sixth Sense was the only one to really do this right, as far as I've seen. -The Visit, saw it coming and just couldn't get into it. Not sure what clued me in, but mreh. ~ Last Tier: -Secret Window, didn't see it coming but I was already so bored by then that I couldn't be bothered with it. -The Mist, didn't enjoy it, at all, and didn't really see it as a plot twist. Just depressing as all get-out. -Village is last. Saw it in theater. Saw both twists from a mile away and just kept rubbing me the wrong way the entire time I watched it.
I don’t like the “mental illness = violent killer” trope but I love shutter island! It was sooo good & definitely didn’t see that twist coming! Also liked identity, haven’t watched in years though. Hate Secret Window, glad most ppl do too. Scream was great because you didn’t that Billy & Stu killed Maureen. Billy def seemed like he was behind what was currently going on but to kill the mom & have all this extra planned out…I loved it! Love these lists!!!
I loved Secret Window when I watched it as a teenager, but at that time I had literally never seen that concept done in a movie before so the twist blew my mind 😆 If I rewatched it now I might dislike or even hate a lot of it. I will say, though, the very end of the movie is 1000x better than the end of the Stephen King story. Which is ironic since the entire story is about a writer who's obsessed with how important the ending of a story is and the ending of the story sucks. It's that whole Stephen King thing where he throws a ghost in at the end for no good reason. At least they didn't do that in the movie.
True, the Saw franchise might not come to mind when you think of plot twists, but any true fan of the Saw movies expects good plot twists (Saw 5 anyone?).
The Uninvited is one of the first horror movies I've ever watched, so not being used to any twists beforehand, it blew me away like crazy. I do really doubt that it would be able to trick me if I watched it a little later in my life, but it does hold a special place in my heart. Meanwhile US was quite predictable, but it was one of a bunch of theories that flew through my head while watching the movie. So confirmation bias kicks in once it's revealed what's actually going on.
I recommend His House to anybody literally any chance I get BECAUSE of that twist. The way it completely flips your whole understanding of the story so far... I never saw it coming and I didn't even register what was happening at first. And by then I was crying. I love that movie😅
Three movies I've watched I would recommend for Part 2. SPELLBINDER (1988) (it might come across as typical 80s yuppie horror but the twist blew me away), ANGEL HEART (1987), and JACOB'S LADDER (1990).
I loved Orphan’s plot twist so much. It was so good and shocking and that movie was amazing. And the Scream movies too with guessing who the killers are. Saw too. And 10 cloverfield lane is an incredible movie too. Same with Us and Get Out. I’ve noticed Nope isn’t here though, I liked that twist too. So many of these movies and twists are so good
UGH one of my favorite memories is when The Village was in theaters and I watched a trailer for it, turned to my dad and said "it's modern times" to this day idk how i sussed it out from the trailer alone but i was OBSESSED w a 90s book by Margaret Peterson Haddix called Running Out of Time abt a girl in a colonial village and someone gets sick so her grandma pulls her aside and is like pssst it's the year 1990 so if y'all want an experience similar to the village that doesn't make a mentally handicapped person stab someone and then justify their death - you have options!
I usually figure out plot twists, but the others almost got me. I did figure it out before the reveal, but barely. The visist from the estranged husband gave it away, but that was near the end of the movie.
Idk if I’ve just never paid attention to Friday the 13th ending cuz I’m a Freddy krueger fan ….and Im sure Freddy jokes about it and what it just went over my head?…but you just shook me to the core with that spoiler…. I thought I kneeeeew. I did noooooot sooooo I’m gonna watch that next lol

Yeah, that twist was great; I was wondering how they could make the movie interesting and they did. I've seen it done in other places as well (including the TV show _The Family_ and I think in one episode of _Alert: Missing Persons Unit_ ).
you put so much effort into this video and it was so good, thank youu !! loved it, hopefully you’ll do a part two!! ❤
Love the ranking!! I was surprised you didn’t put Barbarian on here!!
I'm predicting... Saw, The Mist, Identity, Eden Lake, and every M Night film ever to be on the list haha
I'd forgotten about The Mist. Broke my heart
Darling I'm surprised Barbarian isn't on the list!
The Visit is my second favorite M.Night film. Love it.
Same
I loved the ending of Dead And Buried when they show the sheriff one of the town's films and it turns out he was murdered and turned into a zombie too but he didn't remember it!
And of course the very last line in the movie, implying that he's completely sane at the end, he's going to be lobotomized on purpose because he's so haunted by his past was a fantastic final twist.
thank you so much for the time stamps
for me, it was for certain The Others because it was my first big plot twist like it and I didn't see it coming AND I still wanted to watch it again, just to see it from a different perspective.
I will never get sick of tier lists 😂
THANK U SO SO MUCH FOR INCLUDING THE TIMESTAMPS OMG
I remember watching shutter island for the first time and thinking “please don’t be crazy please don’t be crazy” because every plot twist during this time seemed to end with the main character having a mental illness
It ruined the movie for me
For plot twists, I highly recommend The Orphanage. My husband, who always predicts the ending, was even shocked
You look like you’re glowing!! You look great
Awesome idea for a video.
I'm only skipping the fractured part cause is the only i haven't seen and I'm interested on watching in the future.
You have to see it. It's so good
“I don’t think people think of plot twists when they think of the Saw franchise.” That is genuinely close to the first thing that a lot of people think about with those movies.
I always liked the plot twist in 1408.prolly 1 of my favorite movies too
I'd love to see a part 2 of this video! Recent movies I've enjoyed with good plot twists are The Empty Man and I See You ❤
I like the Saw movies, and the reveal at the end of the first one was wholly unexpected.
This was fun! I'd love a part two with some more movies. Some good ones would be The Lodge, Malignant, The Night House, and Mother
Great video! Thanks for the time stamps, it was super easy to skip over films I haven't seen yet.
Also, totally agree about Cabin In The Woods. I wish I could see that movie for the first time again too!
I love when you do your tier lists, and always look forward to next time! Thank you Sarah!
I think the plot twist at the end of 'The Scarehouse' was something
I really liked the Village as a kid haven't seen it in forever
sarah these tier names are hilarious. so chaotic and i love it ❤
The Sixth Sense had a mind-blowing twist but now when I re-watch it, it seems so obvious 😅
I *loved* the plot twist in Cabin, I wrote about it in my undergrad thesis because of how great it was
Decided why the heck not? I'll rank them with you. And they're in order within the tiers.
Never watched Fractured, His House, or Time Crimes (need to fix this) so can't really comment.
~ Top Tier:
-Sixth Sense, the re-watchability from the twist is amazing.
~ Second Tier:
-Shutter Island, I haven't watched this movie often, but I do like how the twist changes the movie.
~ Third Tier:
-Scream, saw it coming and still really enjoyed it. It's the movie that got me back into horror movies again.
~ Fourth Tier:
-The Others, am I the only one who saw it coming?
~ Last Tier:
-Secret Window, didn't see it coming but I was already so bored by then that I couldn't be bothered with it.
-The Mist, didn't enjoy it, at all, and didn't really see it as a plot twist. Just depressing as all get-out.
-Village is last. Saw it in theater. Saw both twists from a mile away and just kept rubbing me the wrong way the entire time I watched it.
Yeesss Cabin in the Woods the part where the beasts are let loose then blood shed everywhere lol. I always made a huge deal about that scene lol.
I love Secret Window.
Not a horror movie, but one of my favorite plot twists was in Hot Fuzz, just because of how funny it was.
So confirmation bias kicks in once it's revealed what's actually going on.
actually, watching you adjust the image size is like ASMR to me
Hahahaha yess!! I also hate secret window!! 😆
Edit: Sarah have you seen Seance? I would really like to know if you'd like it.
I recommend His House to anybody literally any chance I get BECAUSE of that twist. The way it completely flips your whole understanding of the story so far... I never saw it coming and I didn't even register what was happening at first. And by then I was crying. I love that movie😅
Two other movies that I would like to add to this great list are: "The Usual Suspects" and one of my absolute favorites... "" Frailty "
Hey. What’s your opinion on the plot twist in Malignant? Love your content. :)
So many of these movies and twists are so good
Not my favorite twists, but some I was mindblown by was Sinister and Incantation. Great movies too
UGH one of my favorite memories is when The Village was in theaters and I watched a trailer for it, turned to my dad and said "it's modern times"
to this day idk how i sussed it out from the trailer alone but i was OBSESSED w a 90s book by Margaret Peterson Haddix called Running Out of Time abt a girl in a colonial village and someone gets sick so her grandma pulls her aside and is like pssst it's the year 1990
so if y'all want an experience similar to the village that doesn't make a mentally handicapped person stab someone and then justify their death - you have options!
I usually figure out plot twists, but the others almost got me. I did figure it out before the reveal, but barely. The visist from the estranged husband gave it away, but that was near the end of the movie.
"Everyone knew the plot twist to Sixth Sense"
Me at watching it for the first time at 21yo: Hold up, he's a ghost?! He was dead the whole time???!!!
Where would you put “The Skeleton Key”?
Mulholland Drive has one of my favorite plot twists of all time
Idk if I’ve just never paid attention to Friday the 13th ending cuz I’m a Freddy krueger fan ….and Im sure Freddy jokes about it and what it just went over my head?…but you just shook me to the core with that spoiler…. I thought I kneeeeew. I did noooooot sooooo I’m gonna watch that next lol
I would like to add I double checked the list and have seen all of ‘‘em and I thought I knewwwwwww 😂
i also watched the sixth sense knowing nothing, my jaw literally dropped
"The Visit" is a great movie. "Shutter Island" is a great book and movie although the twist is tiresome after so many similar twists.
when she posts, it feels like a holiday 💀
