I know absolutely nothing about ice fishing fish finders, but I was looking at getting that hook2 and learned that it's probably a good choice for a beginner. I'm counting down the days until the lakes freeze here in Colorado. Thanks
Great comparison. Matches my experience. My Lowrance X67c from years back was amazing at the time but they are slow and definitely aren't great on that 200khz band for noise. My Helix 7 G2n has been far better. Lowrance seems to have fallen back on the performance which is a shame as they were first to the game as they were in the 60s. Chirp should help on the frequency battle
Good Comparison Video ! Just the explanation was worth looking ! If a fish has those damages on the fins just take it and eat it dont let it reproduce (the offspring have a 50/50 chans of getting gnarly fins ... Save the Top Notch for spawn and eat the ones that look funky :-) ) im going for the Hook2 im the easy one who doesnt use sonars today i prebait instead :-D Regards Paul Roger -North Sweden
Great informative video! I got a Hook2-5 as a gift last year and have been wondering how well the ice flasher function works. I think I'm gonna get the ice machine pack for it and try it out.
Hey love your videos super informative!! I just moved to Washington from Virginia. I’m super new to Washington and ice fishing. Just got some electronics and I’m getting ready to hit the hard water hard this January! I would love to maybe meet up with yah and ice fish somewhere in Washington!
2000 model eagle fish finder I had died. So, am just looking for a very easy to use & read fish finder for fish id, depth , & bottom structure. I fish the same areas but depth can change from 4ft to 20ft quickly. Depth never goes over 30ft. Water is very murky though. I do not need networking or maps needed. I bought a Garmin vivid 5 but hated it. Could not make heads or tails out of it. Sent it back. Suggestions advice please
I've been looking at both of these for my 12 ft boat, and came across this video. Nice! I realize you are reviewing these for ice fishing. Would there be any major considerations for use on a boat?
@Ge Lee It does show the percentage. I run in the split flasher with 2D screen in 40' or less and split screen 2D with zoom over 40' (Lake trout fishing)
With the hook2 when u took it out of the water do you ever check the bottom of the cone to see if there’s ice or slush stuck to it I’ve seen that happen a lot of time
I am not proficient at setting up a F.F. or reading what I see on a F.F. screen. Your understanding of F. F., and there various functions are legit! I just recently moved from a grey scale F.F. to a Lowrance 5ti Color unit. I would like to better understand screen set up. What all that clutter is on a screen as sensitivity levels are increased. How to set up a screen to show Thermocline. Are there good online teaching video's you could share?
What battery size did u use on the helix. How long does it last u on a day of fishing? (Factoring in cold could last abit longer in summer. I'm planning to get the helix 5 or the garmin striker 4. For portability fishing (small streams)
Not my favorite. There are better units at lower price points. I'd recommend either - Garmin Striker 4 ($173) amzn.to/2CisaQ8 OR - Humminbird Piranha Max 4 PT ($163) amzn.to/2RKK1IX PLUS you can a $20 rebate on the Humminbird right now thru May 2019 www.humminbird.com/sites/humminbird_site/files/2019-hb-national-promo-instruction-sheet-pmax.pdf
The helix is a better unit. I have the helix 7 chirp g2 ice unit. My buddy bought the lowrance and it constantly picked up clutter making It hard to mark your jig. He ended up returning the unit and ordered a helix 7g2n ice unit. Only complaint I have is horrible battery life with the helix and those interested can't seem to buy one in store because they are always sold out. Also, i have never adjusted any settings on my helix, power it on and drop ducer in the hole. Updates are easy as long as you have a micro sd card/ micro sd card adapter. I actually download updates on my phone using a otg adapter and plug card into unit. Awesome units but should have came with a lithium ion battery because they drain the battery quick.
Amazing video thanks for showing us how to use and the features and benefits. Just bought the Lowrance model Hook2 4x all season pack ice fish finder!
I know absolutely nothing about ice fishing fish finders, but I was looking at getting that hook2 and learned that it's probably a good choice for a beginner. I'm counting down the days until the lakes freeze here in Colorado. Thanks
Just ordered the helix 7 all season bundle. Can’t wait to try it out

Thanks for the review. I also checked out your Helix how to set up video, I thought that was great! Well done sir.

Glad they helped and you enjoyed them.

These are sterile triploid trout. They are incapable of reproducing
Great informative video! I got a Hook2-5 as a gift last year and have been wondering how well the ice flasher function works. I think I'm gonna get the ice machine pack for it and try it out.
Any update on how the ice flasher works
I've been looking at the helix 7 also

I am looking for the Hook2 5 Lowrance ice pack without the unit but can only find it for 269.99. seems expensive for what you are getting.

Both are great open water units
Great video!
If you put the Lowrance in the ice fishing mode off the menu it will show the battery power as well, Ice setting also give a different color settings.
It was in ice fishing mode. Perhaps I am due for a software update.
@Ge Lee It does show the percentage. I run in the split flasher with 2D screen in 40' or less and split screen 2D with zoom over 40' (Lake trout fishing)
@Ge Lee From menu: settings; sonar; fishing mode; ice
@Ge Lee Well we tried. LOL I have and older Hook5
I had to look up what a Mackinaw is... never heard a laker called that before
With the hook2 when u took it out of the water do you ever check the bottom of the cone to see if there’s ice or slush stuck to it I’ve seen that happen a lot of time
Yes it just seems to have more problems holding contact with the problem even on open water

Have you done any videos on the Lowrance Elite 7TI for ice fishing? If so I'd be curious how you set it up.
I currently do not own that unit.
How do they compare with the Garmin 4?
Great video very informative thank you...

I'm planning to get the helix 5 or the garmin striker 4. For portability fishing (small streams)
This video will answer your questions ua-cam.com/video/7gqw8XeG5q0/v-deo.html
What’s your thought on the hook2 4x. I don’t got a whole lot to spend haha
Not my favorite. There are better units at lower price points. I'd recommend either
- Garmin Striker 4 ($173) amzn.to/2CisaQ8
OR
- Humminbird Piranha Max 4 PT ($163) amzn.to/2RKK1IX
PLUS you can a $20 rebate on the Humminbird right now thru May 2019 www.humminbird.com/sites/humminbird_site/files/2019-hb-national-promo-instruction-sheet-pmax.pdf
TheOutdoorAngler Hook2 5X is better in my opinion and why I choose it as my own choice on my boat.No ice fishing here in Florida.
I got one, it freaking sucks, and the ice ducer is crap. Look at the garmin striker or a regular flasher
When you turn helix off after you have all your settings for ice fishing do they stay when you turn unit off and turn back on
As long you power down before unplugging the battery your settings are saved.
Garmin striker 4 is all u need
Garmin makes a great product!
I use the Helix 5 SI for my ice fishing unit and have trouble dialing it in would the settings be the same as you G2 ?
Have u done a software update?
Where are you fishing is it public?
Surface clutter is the ice you don’t have to ducer down far enough.
Какой лучше купить для зимы?
Can you do a video on the settings
For the Helix
Sure. Headed to Montana for a few days and I'll try and get something for you.
@@spiltmilt I would also be very interested in a video on the settings for the Helix. I'm a techie and still get lost in the menus :-)
Here you go guys! ua-cam.com/video/0PJM4-cwXoU/v-deo.html
What speed is on your helix
Run on full chart speed on ice
I run ultra
can you just buy a suction transducer and use the helix in open water on say a rowboat?
You could but you might as well buy an open water transducer to take full advantage of the unit.
The helix is a better unit. I have the helix 7 chirp g2 ice unit. My buddy bought the lowrance and it constantly picked up clutter making It hard to mark your jig. He ended up returning the unit and ordered a helix 7g2n ice unit. I run the 5 and it seems less battery hungry but I do recommend upgrading to lithium ion batteries.
Can you cut 2 holes? 1 for the transducer and the other to fish from and not have it mess with your flasher?
I've never ice fished. So I'm curious
Absolutely
So which one? Lol
