      Hey Rick! Hopefully this will be running smooth again for rainy days in panama when I reach your location soon. I had a full service by so called professional far from Martinique standards.... Wonder what the heck they been doing as I found so much problems ever after.
      You know where and by whom 😤
      Anyway fingers crossed it will be great again.
      Cheers my friend 🍻

      Thank you so much for watching and for being here! It’s definitely good to know everything onboard as I do with everything except my week spot. Main engine is flawless and well maintained and frequently cuddled with even though engines is my weakness. Found out the hard way that most things are better done myself as the Caribbean standards is not very high except from Martinique. Cheers 🍻

    Being an electro mechanic my self, you’re doing a stellar job Thomas. Pictures and film while taking it apart or a diagram is a huge help when putting it all back together again. SPARE PARTS are the big problem most of the time. Looks like you struck gold at that harbor. What an amazing shop/business you’ve found there.
    Skål!

    It would be interesting doing a caparison on large solar/Wind turbine &large alternator - Bigger battery bank to a generator over time ? Well done , Looks brand new .

      I have been studying alternatives over the last years and have concluded with that any honest sailor would admit they can not be relying entirely on solar/batteries. In an ideal world on the paper with ridiculous amount of lithium you can stay afloat longer. But eventually run out of power. Lithium charge faster and in the long run this is cost efficient versus conventional batteries. Wind generators works for smaller boats with low power consumption, however the noise even on the quiet ones are annoying and also don’t give you much power. Running costs on wind generators are also something to put into this equation. Bigger or even two alternators on your main engine is an alternative but you add hours and wear and tear to even more expensive engine. Bigger boats have bigger engines. So a generator is therefore normally cheaper both in running costs and initial costs. On the positive side you only have one engine to maintain.
      However solar is getting more efficient every year, and like mine even gives more than wind generators if there is only some daylight. In fact lightning storms in panama gave me more power than the wind generators on my neighbors boats the same night. Most of the time I’m self sufficient with power from the sun, but sometimes I need to top of because of endless days of rain. Adding more solar I would top up faster, and could manage slightly better than today. Most sailors today add lithium and more solar not because they never need a generator anymore. It’s mostly because they can run more things by solar/batteries than before like AC etc. On bigger boats you can reduce your generator hours significantly today, but from my perspective not entirely live without one. Hence the fact I bought a tiny Honda as a backup. I might make a true story video about the topic later. If I run my generator only one hours a week I have enough water production. Sailing alone I can even last two months with my onboard water and without running my generator at all. This was not the case in Panama during the rain season. The Honda is great and reliable and covers my needs. But it’s thirsty and in the longer run even a Panda is cheaper from my experience. Some might not agree with me and thats okay. But I have done the math several times, and still do. All the best 🍻

      @@SailingwithThomas Thanks Thomas , Iv sailed solo for many years , Large & smallish boats & found the Honda as a supplement power source to be adequate when needing to use tools etc. & a blessing when batteries run low , Iv just never seen the cost/Doubling up (Another engine) worth the benefits it gives & iv had a couple of not good experiences when doing deliveries - Fuel lines , Seacocks & one in the Malacca straits were the inlet cooling pipe come off the seacock ( poor workmanship) behind the generator , That was fun . BUT your yacht is looking fantastic & I wish you all the best in the world - Cant beet size for comfort & speed . Fair winds .

    Tape or Glue a Magnet to the bottom end of the Oil Filters on the Boat. it will ensure that any metal shavings from the engines will stay in the filter.
    also, I hate to be "that Guy" but, your always wearing glasses except when your using the drill mounted Wire brush!! it only takes one small peice to fly off and your either going to be seriously injured, doing a permanent impression of a Pirate or the end of your Voyages......

      @@SailingwithThomas Magnetising the sump bolt , or fixing a magnet to the bolt (beware of crank clearances ) , is a good move too . At oil changes the magnetic bolt being covered with steel particles indicates damage to a bearing ....time to strip the engine rather than risk more problems . Change the oil way before the manufacture's advise ....certainly before a long journey . Devise some system , or invest in a kit , to warm up your diesel when in colder climates to prevent the diesel waxing .

    Thomas I love your videos. I have watched your channel from the start. Having been in the marine industry and a Panda Fisher dealer your description of the repairs done where not up to your standards. The engine is a Kabota, gasket sealant ? All the damage to the timing cover was by the raw water pump water seal leaking ? How did you fix this, how was the pump oil seal given the pump is hard mounted and gear driven ? You need to fully explain why these failures happened , did you ever get raw water in the oil sump ?

    • @SailingwithThomas
      @SailingwithThomas  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you for watching and your feedback.
      Not sure what you mean by not being up to my standards? All seals where replaced, and as you correctly pointed out it’s thankfully a Kubota engine supposed to be reliable and good. The seal between the water pump and mechanical part was all good and no water in oil. However the water pump is famously being leaking behind the impeller. I stopped using it when discover the leak, but the foam insulation of the capsule at the bottom was difficult to not only clean but also drying. So being like this it’s to compare dipping tools in salt water then put it back in a bag and see what happens after a month or two. However I believe I found a solution and also it might have been mounted wrong to begin with. I will explain this in the upcoming episode.
      All the best and thank you for being here! Cheers 🍻

    Thomas....here I sit at home, and admire your strength with trying to do what you can with what you have...terrific.
    And, your friendship with Carribe & Panda have done you so well towards the rebuild of simple problems...and admire your learning ability..
    Change of subject...Checked out Tonsberg info...Beaut home port, love it and am often reminded by the artistic work on the faithful outboard.
    Wow, what a great way of getting what you require by diving into an icebox...love it.
    As I guess many sailors admire Phillip at the mariner...already love that bloke. And am concerned somewhat as to how the main engine is maintained and the ole genny sort of gets missed...but do understand how life's adventurous fun can be so demanding..LOL
    Am so happy happy for you and do encourage you to adventure further as life does progress far too quick.

      Thank you for watching and your kind words! Love my home port as it’s probably the most beautiful cruising ground on the planet, except from being a bit cold in the winter and short summers. My main engine is well maintained and looks mint condition. The genny lived its own life in its capsule and I have struggled to get parts and also how to deal with it. I almost had been giving up on it. But thanks to Caribe Marin here in Martinique it might been given a new life here now!
      Thank you for being here, and all the best. Cheers 🍻

    • @SailingwithThomas
      @SailingwithThomas  2 роки тому +2

      Thank you for watching and your comment! I’m not sure if I understand your question correctly, but main engine onboard do have an alternator but only kicks in 50Ah. The generator I’m working on is delivering 8,5 kWh 240V and makes a huge difference. The 240V chargers onboard tops up batteries when rainy days, but normally I manage pretty well only with solar. However now and then I need to make water onboard, and my watermaker takes 1Kwh 240V so this is basically the only thing I need Generator to help me with. All the best 🍻
