  • Im hit by the wind force of a CAT1 Hurricane out at sea!
Sailing 1081 nautical miles solo fighting my way through endless numbers of violent storms and even hurricane force winds in the Banda Sea.
This is a true story and not a youtube storm or drama. Its the reality of sailing the Banda Sea during rainy season with the north west monsoons and even cyclones that creates ridiculous weathers.
Amazing close up video of a cyclone forming and the battles I had that even cost me sails after a full knock down in gale force 12 - 72 knots of wind.
Im even sharing my strategies and why I added 731 nautical miles to my route. How the weather patterns works in the Banda Sea, and the effects of the cyclones. Strong ocean currents and also sharing a best time to cross the Banda sea timeline.
I hope this video not only works as entertainment but even could be of a value for sailors coming this way in the future. Its not ment to scare you off, but to share what you can expect and why Indonesia is among the most complicated nations to sail. Especially as a solo sailor.
If you ever wondered about my earlier statements about why you need a strong engine and even a range of minimum 500 nautical mile, this episode could enlighten you a bit. This is a prime example why going blue water (CE category A) without engine is stupid, and why a fully electric is in the same category.

    ABOUT THIS CHANNEL:
I'm a sailor with a UA-cam channel and not a UA-camr. Sailing around the world in a Bavaria 55 Cruiser mostly solo, making videos whenever we have time for it.
Comfortable at sea with 4 decades of sailing experience and hundreds of thousands of miles behind me.
Even though this is season 6 on UA-cam I did not make that many videos in the beginning, and obviously not from my entire sailing life. Before full-time sailing 6 years ago, I sailed several seasons in the Mediterranean, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and have been sailing and racing ever since. Also, more than 10 years of experience as a captain in Search and Rescue at sea in Norway.

The reality of sailing solo isn’t always romantic.

  • @dgasmd1

Dude, seems like since you got out of the Caribbean it has been nothing but hardship and miserable storm after storm. I’m impressed despite your obvious knowledge and preparation that you are still enthusiastic about the pacific. Also, very very different than what I see from other UA-camrs. Caribbean is calling you😂😂😂😂😂

From a sailor of 40 years. I'm always mind boggled about sailors today, you are obviously a well seasoned sailor. You have all the expensive electronic gear, but yet you don't carry a storm trysail or storm main. Especially when you know you will be getting into severe weather conditions. Besides that some great sailing, well done.n

Hey you are one strong guy, to come through that trip and still have a smile on your face. Set new standards for UA-cam sailing storms . Thank you Thomas.

  • @SYAtlas

Excellent documentation Thomas, rare to find, and fingers crossed that this remains your most exhausting sail for a very long time.

  • @californiakayaker

Apparently this terrible attitude towards safety equipment even happens near Australia where a ship nearly took out another sail boat. Her AIS was on. I know she could do more with her lights, at least that way the guys swabbing the decks or out for a smoke would notice her. I suspect even one of those moving spotlights might help. It seems like radar alarms aren't used much any longer. Wow , that sail was almost too much I couldn't afford the loss of so many sails !

  • @jgestiot

I have been hit by a category 5 typhoon (fortunately not on a boat, which would have sunk) and the strngth of it (250km/h with gusts of 300km/h) must be experienced to be believed. Gale 10 is not fun but Gale 12 while sailing is impossible. You survived, that's the main concern. Things can be fixed or replaced but not your life. I hope you got plenty of sleep. Thanks for the video.

  • @belimooo

Two questions: 1. Why not detach your bimini already when leaving Indonesia? 2. Why always genoa and not a real storm jib? Not an expert here, really wondering... 😊

  • @guydepoorter

Hi Thomas, i am astonished how a Bavaria produktion boat cope so well with extreme circumstances. The canvas has done its job, time for new bimini and sails. Congrats on your sailing skills. Cheers from… Ajaccio.

Hurricanes are so unpredictable. I live in Texas and there are some that last days and have solid rain. Then there's the ones that dissipates and do nothing. It's a total guessing game. Good luck Thomas.

A lot of boat for solo sailing. Happy with the choice?
