@@morienbendinelli1554 Thanks for the comment Morien! You're right that with biter evolution there is no going back, however you can absolutely have reduced attacks if you stop producing as much. What's up Trupen! My analytics tell me my review is regularly recommended with your videos haha. Congrats on your recent success! Happy to see you found your way here :)
Factorio is basically an allegory to life: you trade your time for a marginal increase in productivity (basically school/training). After that, you trade another bit of time for another bit of productivity. This cycle never ends, and every increase/expansion only serves to fuel further growth. Gotta love them positive reinforcing loops
1500 hours in factorio personally, and I still have cases where I'm like "Okay so what if you take these belts inserters a few splitters and HOLY SHIT WHERE DID THOSE 10 HOURS OF MY LIFE GO!!"
Yup. I put the game down for two years after 1800 hrs and just opened up a new world again last week and its every bit as addictive as it ever was. Cracktorio indeed.
I have a steel shortage, caused by an iron shortage, cause by a coal shortage. Before I go to bed and leave it running over night I'll just clear out a few biters on that coal patch, set up some miners and run a train line, with a station and an unloading oh, its the next morning and I have work and didn't sleep again...
The fact that there is a free demo which actually teaches you how to play the game before you pay for it is the kind of thing that every game used to do but no one does anymore. Games used to focus on the player's experience, factorio is one of those games.
I really like that. It's such a consumer friendly way of seeing whether games are good for you. I suppose with Steam's 2h refund window you can get a similar thing, but I always liked that demos are often more custom-tailored to convey to you what the game is like. Always excited when there's demos for games on steam! That steam festival where a bunch of games had demos available was really cool. I discovered many new games that way!
One never stops learning! I think that took me 200 hours to learn as well. After 50 hours of Krastorio 2 I also eventually learned that you can switch a roboport between construction and logistics mode. Sure would have been good to know before getting big coverage for my Megabase haha.
@@Carbon_Cola what on earth, you can set roboports to be for specific robots. I'm 500 hours in Would this guarantee the construction robots in my solar farm wont come back to base but the logistic bots can deliver?
@@more-reasons6655 With the Krastorio 2 mod pack there's two modes for the roboport that changes the construction area and logistics area. As far as I know there's no such feature in the base game.
when i started playing factorio (which was in 0.14), dragging with power poles would just put them in every available tile so... if i were to try to drag a a power line with big electric poles a long distance, i would have clicked once, hold down the button, start running in the direction i wanted to drag the line, 2 tiles later, it would place a new big electric pole as then the tiles would be available again.
@@Deilwynna well, that still happens if one is not paying attention to their inventory and starts dragging pole ghosts (after running out of available poles). ;-)
@@Carbon_Cola just one more automated blue science asembler "Huh, its not getting any red circuits?" "Huh, I need more copper for red circuts" "Huh my copper patch is dry" and so on
@@monochrome3168 Aah...the first time you loose yourself in "one-more-improvement" and ask yourself "why is the sun still up" only to realise it should instead be "oh, the sun is up again"
Factorio has taught me not to be lazy in the short term so to eventually be ultimately lazy big time later on. Some people call that "being efficient". It's a great life skill.
Great review! I only missed a section on scaling, where you go from handcrafting, automation, train network, bots, blueprints, rocket, and then into megabase. I especially like the transition to an automated mall, and the transition to bots with blueprints.
I was thinking about adding something like this, it's a good idea/suggestion! Ultimately I decided against it to not spoil the game's tech and retain a feeling of "discovery" with the viewers. I think that's where a lot of fun comes from! But your suggestion would probably have worked great too!
every single factorio review ever made starts with the trailer theme and i love it oh yeah i have 800+ hours in this game and have watched basically every single review on youtube
Let me also add a very important note: controls and UI are a masterpiece in this game, I can't stress it enough. Everything has hotkeys, you can copy\paste stuff, every menu (even options) has a fuzzy-search bar. You grab\put stuff by 1, 5, 50% or everything with just hotkeys
Trains are a surprisingly meaty part of the game that I didn't quite understand and therefore sparsely used in my first playthrough (where I used mostly belts and drones). Once you understand rail signals it's a whole new game where you can spend 20 hours iterating over rail intersection blueprints. There's some people out there with smelting operations that require multiple 40 wagon trains on constant loop just for the iron ore I highly recommend the LTN mod to add another dimension to the trains system
This game is literally the "Play it YOUR way" kind of style I love. Want a challenge? Crank up enemy spawns! Make Items more expansive! Spread resources further apart! Make the world only a few tiles tall but infinite in a single direction! Mod the heck out of it! The documentation is the **Chefs Kiss** perfect example of well documentated features of stuff in the game. There's even content in the game that isn't actually used, but is their for modders to take advantage of. This is the type of game that the developers take into consideration the community. They have gone out of their way to fix BUGS for MODDERS! And the weekly blog posts that go into extreme intricate detail about the game and what challenges they faced trying to solve an issue, whether it was gameplay, a bug, performance, or even stuff both in and out of the game. My favorite is the fact the Expansion is being worked on with of the folks being the creator of the large Space Exploration mod, so you get on the blogs perspective of what it was like on the Community Modding API side and the actual codebase side and how they had to tackle problems with how they wanted to solve with the expansion and the lessons learned from their modding experience. The blogs are a fantastic read, like it's a nice thing to sit down and read and just be amazed at what problems and solutions they experienced before during and after developement.
Nice job, I think this video does a great job at explaining to "normal" people how and why to play. I know loading a months old save is sometimes a bit disorienting (and i built it!) so of course seeing an endgame base built by someone else is going to be intimidating!
3:28 "So called circuit network" I've seen people build 8-bit computers from what are basically the simplest of transistors to control their factories.... really. Just last week I used it to build a scrolling sign that reads "Happy New Year!" as Auld Lang Syne played... all from circuits.
@@Saviliana Wish more games had turing complete logic like that. People make the craziest stuff. I remembe seeing those gigantic computers in minecraft, truly a sight to behold.

I once sat down a quite saturday morning at 9:30ish after breakfast, played a bit, and for the very first time, when I realized there is something outside the game and looked up, it was 6. I thought I had played maybe 90 minutes.
Thank for breaking this down. I would love multiplayer in a PvP mode, where there are multiple people on each side, each having separate responsibilities over warfare, research and industry.
Hi Emil, my pleasure! You should check out Factorio's public server browser and find a map/server running "BiterBattles" by "ComfyFactory". Two teams with identical resource patches are split by water. Both teams play the normal factorio game, get attacked by biters etc. In addition to researching tech, science can be used to make the enemy team's biters stronger. It's played with randoms so don't expect crazy good coordination, but still people join the server and just do something they think makes sense. Expand mining, improve production, work on defenses etc. Still a bunch of people coming together to build a factory and fight the enemy team. I know the map has it's source code online on github so you could probably host your own server with friends as well, but the public server is actually quite frequented/played (as are all maps by ComfyFactory), so there's almost always a match going when you want to play BiterBattles! Let me know how you like it :)
I have been playing PC games for thirty years. THIRTY years. I bought Factorio on May 29th of 2016. Since then I have played it for just over 2,000 hours. Two... thousand... hours. The only other game that I think might come close to that amount a play time for me would the the entire Sid Meier's Civilization franchise and I first started playing that in 1991. Now if you'll excuse me, The Factory Must Grow.

Great comparison Phillip. Riftbreaker is a fantastic game in its own way, but if you want factory basebuilding there's just nothing like Factorio! Think you'll give it a shot now?

Thanks for your comment Tranan! I can totally relate - I really appreciate seeing videos like this about games that I like (looking at you Mandalore), so I'm happy to hear that I achieved something similar!
It shocked me as well, even after 200 hours of playing it I find myself surprised at the amount of content it provides. Mad respect for the guy who made the mod!

Now that I’ve played it I can understand how it’s deeply complex but doesn’t overwhelm you with a start. I’m playing small and keeping my factory small because I’m playing without tutorials and kind of just experimenting with different systems I’ve been paying only for two days. And I’m finding it just very interesting How little impact the bugs have on where I am currently. But once I start to really ramp up production I know they’re going to come. So I get to basically choose when the difficulty ramps up while I am experimenting with factory designs. It’s genius.
@@Jamesaepp I agree with this entirely. Launching something into space is your first big goal. Then as you watch it go up, you start to ask yourself: "now what?" And THAT is when Factorio really gets started. Launching that first rocket marks the end of the tutorial. Now it's time to REALLY make a factory!
The start music sounded like a mix of bad piggies and world of goo soundtracks, giving me moments of pure nostalgia. And then of course there’s one of my fav games being played in the background
my personal favorite. (didn't play for a while and forgot the name) the mod which adds several additional tiers of biters ending in something godzilla like the mod which makes biters drop "loot" the mod which adds biter bodies as burnable fuel the mod which allows you to harvest this "loot" with towers and transport, recycle and by that feed your factory with biters. and ofc, the mod which grants you later tech levels of gunnery to survive those big biters. it's a uber uber death world and something where you need to know what you're doing and be kinda good in base defense but i love it. it makes biters serious enemies well into mega base times AND allows you to incorporate those biters as an integral part of your ressource gathering :)
I was actually thinking of having my next playthrough be lile this. Tons of mods for biter variety and AI/difficulty, mods for more weapons and defenses, pollution handling mods and deathworld settings!
@@iljas. try it, it's realy fun. and if you're into seeing how this stuff would work out i can recommend JDPlays biter hell series, where he goes absolute overdrive with it. (10 times the biter amount, not just 2 times as death world normaly is) realy entertaining if you ask me. PS: i recommend to watch it in 1.25 speed since it's dozens of hours of content if you want to watch it full^^
figuring out if I want this on switch (which is without mods) and i played the demo on switch already, but your description of the mod with multiple planets and their relations, it just blew my mind

If there's an aspect of the game that you don't like you can change it. Every time I play I think about what I enjoy and what I don't and look for ways to make it more enjoyable.
Phenomenal review, my man! One of the best reviews of anything I've ever encountered. I have a feel for the game now after your video better than any other video on Factorio I've seen. Rarely play video games anymore but occasionally feed my inner kid with one, and Factorio might just fit the bill for the next one. You earned sub even. Keep it up and your channel will become one of the preeminent review channels.
Clark, thank you so much for your comment. It was very heartwarming. I am happy that you've enjoyed the video and re-discovered your inner kid! One day, I should go back to Factorio and learn how to make the blue science/oil products/trains part of the game not overwhelm me. I usually have biters off so I have no excuse! Very good review, especially for someone with your sub count. I really hope you make it to the top, mate!

I felt the same way for a while. If you *truely* don't want to deal with oil products you can snag a bp off of the internet. Although most people recommend playing the game without using blueprints. One of the best features of Factorio is the community. Everyone in the community is super open to helping new players, and is just the nicest community in gaming (from what I've seen on r/factorio). After all, the factory must grow!
3:02 Oh you also forget to say that they take resources from both lines primarily from closest but they take them faster if resources are on the further line and that they drop them only on outer line from them and if belt facing from them or in them then they will output at the right side of the belt but if the belt is curved then they will be outputing inside of the corner you know just casual stuff
Thanks Nakoda! That's really great feedback. I was hoping that I managed to make a video that's interesting for new players and veterans alike. Looks like I may have succeeded :)

You mean in the way that I've built the factory? I tend to use as few miners as possible to cover the entire patch - keeps power use and pollution low. Chances are I don't need the max output yet anyway. Once I do I can always go back and put them next to each other to increase yield!
I love Factorio. I openly admit, I only once hit the AdMech phase where I could upkeep the factory... while forgetting exactly how everything worked together, just that it did. And it's a game I keep poking at here and there when I just want to get my hit of MASSIVE INDUSTRY. Recently started a Space Exploration modded game with a friend and, despite increased complexity, it oddly feels easier and more 'right'.

I have, a number of times, opened a save file I haven't played in a few months, spent an hour looking at the base, and just gone "nah, time to start again". This problem is not helped by having multiple save files all with different mod packs in use.
This specific one is the "Realistic Electric Trains 1.1 fix" from the mod portal. There are several versions of this mod on the portal, some which doesn't work anymore but during the recording of the video that one was still working.

I started playing factorio got scared of automating military science so instead I just automated solar panels and acumulators I have 15 hours on that world. The medium bitters have just started spawning, thats right i wasted like 8-12 hours to have about 671 solar panels and around 700-900 acumulators (I have around 4-5Gj total battery i think) place instead of automating military which I still craft by a autocrafter which i feed by a chest the game didnt punish me for playing like this instead it rewarded me since my pollution is going down giving me time to think how to automate both military and blue/chemical? science now without worring about bitters I hope. The game lets you play at your own pace after you dealt with the first hive. 100% recommended.
Thanks a lot for your comment cabroxno! I really wanted to highlight this play-at-your-own-pace thing with the pollution-biter-link and I'm happy to see that it's a point that echoes with others as one of the big strengths!
I think this happens when you come to a stage where you are not sure what the best next step is and why you should be building anything. When there isn't a lot of pressure from biters, needing to expand to new resource etc. Basically when everything is working fine and you can survive well - you loose some pressure that before that kept you going. I think it helps to just have a very clear goal in mind "launch rocket before 20h" or something, at least it helped me. But also, I think it's 100% okay to stop a playthrough at this stage. You don't need to "finish" a round for it to have had meaning, playing half of it to blue science was fun and that's good enough too! What do you think?
I love to watch death world gameplay. Personally, I play with weakened biters at the moment, though I’m working up to full stock. Cliffs and forests slow me down a lot, but I’m getting better at dealing with them, and keeping fluids organized.
Honestly I often just turn cliffs off. They are cool and all, but it's such a bother to have to make cliff explosive when you build your base. I'd rather just build more wall! factorio is absolutely goat and so is K2+SE i also personally like playing on peacefull mode as i like focusing on the building aspect and the biters are just an annoying distraction
Normally I would disagree, but biters in K2+SE really just turn into a nuisance. Especially on vitamelange planets with those damn biter asteroids. I built stuff on that planet before that update hit so I had 0 defenses. That really sucked.

I wouldn't call this a review. It's more like a sales pitch. A review wouldn't focus on convincing players to get the game.
Factorio is a magic game where you trade your time for expansion.
EXPANDING
You trade your sanity for RPM.
you didn't need free time anyway
1500 hours in factorio personally, and I still have cases where I'm like "Okay so what if you take these belts inserters a few splitters and HOLY SHIT WHERE DID THOSE 10 HOURS OF MY LIFE GO!!"
Such is life when the factory must grow.
The demo is to blame for my addiction. I regret nothing.
I have 800 hours in factorio, I started playing 3 years ago, and I didn't know you could click and drag power poles until 3 weeks ago.
I'm 500 hours in
Would this guarantee the construction robots in my solar farm wont come back to base but the logistic bots can deliver?
@@more-reasons6655 With the Krastorio 2 mod pack there's two modes for the roboport that changes the construction area and logistics area. As far as I know there's no such feature in the base game.
when i started playing factorio (which was in 0.14), dragging with power poles would just put them in every available tile so... if i were to try to drag a a power line with big electric poles a long distance, i would have clicked once, hold down the button, start running in the direction i wanted to drag the line, 2 tiles later, it would place a new big electric pole as then the tiles would be available again.
@@Deilwynna well, that still happens if one is not paying attention to their inventory and starts dragging pole ghosts (after running out of available poles). ;-)
The first time i booted this game 20 min went by in my head. But in reality 4hrs passed. Thats all you need to know about this game 😄
Classic Factorio! Kind of like Civ's "one more turn", except it's more like "one more improvement" haha.
@@Carbon_Cola just one more automated blue science asembler

@@monochrome3168 Aah...the first time you loose yourself in "one-more-improvement" and ask yourself "why is the sun still up" only to realise it should instead be "oh, the sun is up again"
Factorio has taught me not to be lazy in the short term so to eventually be ultimately lazy big time later on. Some people call that "being efficient". It's a great life skill.
Work smarter, not harder!
But your suggestion would probably have worked great too!
every single factorio review ever made starts with the trailer theme and i love it
oh yeah i have 800+ hours in this game and have watched basically every single review on youtube
Indeed a big part of Factorio's appeal is that it's so easy to make something complex, part of that is the fantastic UI as you've pointed out!
Trains are a surprisingly meaty part of the game that I didn't quite understand and therefore sparsely used in my first playthrough (where I used mostly belts and drones).
Once you understand rail signals it's a whole new game where you can spend 20 hours iterating over rail intersection blueprints.
There's some people out there with smelting operations that require multiple 40 wagon trains on constant loop just for the iron ore
I highly recommend the LTN mod to add another dimension to the trains system
They're such a powerful tool. I love when games give that kind of freedom to the player. One of my favorites was WireMod in Garry's Mod. So cool!
I have seen people done made a full working NES inside factorio with original mario playing on it, full game.
@@Saviliana Wish more games had turing complete logic like that. People make the craziest stuff. I remembe seeing those gigantic computers in minecraft, truly a sight to behold.
Circuits are great for Space Exploration mod. I used them to automate cargo rockets to another planets.
0:48 I love how portal 2 in first because ppl playing factorio are most likely to play Portal 2 aswell since its a puzzle/logic game aswell

I once sat down a quite saturday morning at 9:30ish after breakfast, played a bit, and for the very first time, when I realized there is something outside the game and looked up, it was 6. I thought I had played maybe 90 minutes.
Classic Cractorio! Glad to hear you lost yourself in it :)
This overview is very well constructed and I found it incredibly helpful. I was having trouble knowing what to expect. Thank you!

I love Factorio, so many hours of playtime! Though when the factory calls, it does get in the way of one's "normal" life ;)

Agreed! One of the best features!
Glad you're enjoying the game;

FYI you don't need to launch a satellite to "win" the game, just the rocket.
Thanks for the clarification!
You haven't really started playing factorio until you've launched a satellite ;)
(didn't play for a while and forgot the name)
the mod which adds several additional tiers of biters ending in something godzilla like
the mod which makes biters drop "loot"
the mod which adds biter bodies as burnable fuel
the mod which allows you to harvest this "loot" with towers and transport, recycle and by that feed your factory with biters.
and ofc, the mod which grants you later tech levels of gunnery to survive those big biters.
it's a uber uber death world and something where you need to know what you're doing and be kinda good in base defense but i love it. it makes biters serious enemies well into mega base times AND allows you to incorporate those biters as an integral part of your ressource gathering :)

Those spaces between miners anoy me the fact that miners mine the stuff one tile around them dosn't mean they shoudn't overlap
You mean in the way that I've built the factory? I tend to use as few miners as possible to cover the entire patch - keeps power use and pollution low. Chances are I don't need the max output yet anyway. Once I do I can always go back and put them next to each other to increase yield!

Recently started a Space Exploration modded game with a friend and, despite increased complexity, it oddly feels easier and more 'right'.
Space exploration is such a crazy mod. It adds so much to the game and is so polished!
If you're ever looking for more people to play Factorio with (or "bigger" events with mods), on my community discord we organize play sessions every now and then!

I have, a number of times, opened a save file I haven't played in a few months, spent an hour looking at the base, and just gone "nah, time to start again". This problem is not helped by having multiple save files all with different mod packs in use.
Great review!
Thanks Flux! Stay tuned for more good stuff :)
What is that electric locomotive at 8:13?
I am daily active on the modportal, but have never seen this locomotive.
This specific one is the "Realistic Electric Trains 1.1 fix" from the mod portal. There are several versions of this mod on the portal, some which doesn't work anymore but during the recording of the video that one was still working.
@@mtiraken Thank you. I think that I will then put this mod into my modpack.

The bank account must grow
Just curious about factorio - very informative. Thank you!
Thanks Shawn! Glad you liked it! If you have any more questions or want to chat, feel free to tweet at me or join my community discord! twitter.com/CarbonCola discord.gg/p6zb6R62
@@Carbon_Cola Thanks for the invite! Currently playing DSP but poking around Factorio - if I can find a good 'Dummies Guide to Factorio' series, I'll probably take the plunge. Thanks again.
@@shawnp6653 Sure thing! If you're unsure just try the demo! It's fairly easy to pick up, I think. The nice thing is that you don't need to do everything perfectly right away, it's ok to be inefficient. Plus, I think Factorio's gameplay flows better than in DSP so it's not as frustrating to try things out yourself
I'll be here if I can help!
@@Carbon_Cola Thanks. My OCD would kick in big time I am afraid :) Have a good evening!
The factory must grow
Cracktorio
Oh wait I already said cracktorio.
Factory must grow.
dude this was an amazing video
Thanks a lot Owen, really happy to hear you liked it :) Have a great day!
>Little to no frustration
I always burn out right after I automated oil and blue science.
12:27 "Ask your doctor if Factorio is right for you."
Well I guess I need to play this game now!!!!
I'm currently trying my best at modded deathworld and tbh failing a little haha. If you wanna come try it together, feel free to join my community discord! discord.gg/MdszAPKnqc
I'll be streaming my deathworld attempts on Sunday :)
Great overview. Now curious about multiplayer modes.
Remnants of the Precursors (Master of Orion open source game) and Factorio are only two games where you can do genocide, and don't feel bad.
I've never played Remnants of the Precursors (or Master of Orion for that matter) - it's something like a sci-fi Civ, right?
@@Carbon_Cola kinda. But less complex but it's good. Try it's free
This feels a bit like an introduction like should you buy/play ... tho very well made
Fair criticism, thanks for voicing it!
Because THE FACTORY MUST GROW!!!!!
You didn't mention the great community that makes the game 100 times better. I believe it's a big part of what makes factorio great.
factorio is absolutely goat and so is K2+SE
i also personally like playing on peacefull mode as i like focusing on the building aspect and the biters are just an annoying distraction
Normally I would disagree, but biters in K2+SE really just turn into a nuisance. Especially on vitamelange planets with those damn biter asteroids. I built stuff on that planet before that update hit so I had 0 defenses. That really sucked.
Great video there :) Keep it up!
Thank you Mythansar! I will :)
i always said sinec prerelease and my 1000s of hours playing it Factorio should have the warning, This is addictive in my life time of gaming i have never and i mean never found a game that draws me back and back and back, this is partially due to factorio being an amazing game with high replayability, as well as the modding community theses guys are amazing, if i had a dollar for every hour that me and my friends ahve played or talked or anything this game i would be a rich rich man
