I'm a massive Thompson fan, second to none, and I LOVE this version. Dell McCoury is superb, makes it his own. Just shows what a superb piece of music it is. And what great taste McCoury has. One of the best bluegrass bands out there.
You can never get enough McCoury Band! I love Del's voice, and it hits home for me about what he and Vince Gill were talkin' about at the end of this viddy'. When I was a kid, and I first heard Don and Phil, The Everly Bros.; Cathy's Clown it was , well, that just laid me out-in-the-weeds!
So… Del has held the crown on his head without blemish since early ‘90s with the album Don’t stop the music being his watershed moment ! He is a treasure !
I’d like to see if you feel the same after you go and watch Sean Rowe here on UA-cam. I’d also like you to reply with your findings, this version is ok, it’s lacking in emotion compared to Sean. Be real interesting to hear Richard Thompson’s view on the different versions. John
as a father of a very young one, I can only imagine the joy Del must get from being up there on stage with his sons, doing probably what they love most in the world, and watching them play the way they do
One of The Greatest Bluegrass songs of all time..DEL & tthe BOYS....awesome!!!!!! His Voice is hauntly beautiful and performed as ole time bluegrass has been for years and Del keeps it the way it should be sung & played....Love ya DEL & SONS
What a great song, 1952 Vincent Black Lightning, performed by a wonderful, family Bluegrass band! I'll bet someone said, "Who do you think will listen to a four and a half minute song?"
Picture yourself standing in a little corner of a big meadow in Golden Gate Park with the sun just starting to go down, gorgeous long-haired hippie girls and their dreadlocked boyfriends doing some kind of skipping spinning dance in zig-zags all around you and about 200 other people, little kids chasing butterflies, a cold Pabst Blue Ribbin on your hand, and Del up on stage jamming this tune, and you will be picturing yourself in one of the best moments of my life.
outstanding just doesent get any better 1952 Vincent Black Lightning made me Del fan 3 years ago and is still number one in my book .... go Del and the Boys
I may have commented on this video many years ago, or I may not have. Either way.....This is the best performance Del has ever put out of Vincent Black Lightening I have heard. Everyone was on top of their game that night. Kudos to Del and his marvelous band.
Saw them October 4, Golden Gate Park San Francisco. FANTASTIC! Transported me to some backwood Tennessee- gotta find their CD- this family the real thing very professional
I just saw these guys live at the American Theater in Lancaster this past Sunday. as soon as Del asked 'any requests', this was it. wonderful artist and that band was TIGHT!
I was wandering around the walmart yesterday with my cousin, and we could hardly believe our eyes when Del walked by us. My favorite walmart experience hands down.
Came across this by accident while looking for songs by Richard Thompson. I'm not normally a country fan but this is awesome. Good is good no matter what type of music you play, and this is soooo good.
My brother Peter is a big Richard Thompson fan. He taught me this song one summer. Meanwhile, my family planned to take me to see the 'Down from The Mountain' concert that followed the "O Brother Where Art Thou?" movie. Out comes Del and the Boys....singing this song. One of the high points of my musical life. I will never forget that night. Gives me goosebumps just remembering it. And I have been a singer for 30 years.
What a great version of this some...IMO the best...the solos are just super....and just right! I saw Del and the boys perform this last year at Podunk...every bit as good and polished as in this vid...what a treat....
I went to see Del and the boys a couple of weeks ago in Owensboro Ky we got to see them in a meet and greet deal they were the nicest guys you would ever want to meet they treated us just like old friends I bought a t-shirt and they all autographed it for me if you get a chance to see them its worth the price of the ticket thats for sure. They sang the Vincent song by request from the audience they are awesome.
Work security at a festival with the DMB headlining...I had no experience listening to bluegrass, before, but I have been listening to it since...It isn't Country...It isn't Gospel, but it speaks to your soul. Thank you, Del...to yours, for giving us your gift of music!
One of my alltime fave bluegrass groups I had the pleasure of seeing them perform at Hornings Hideout several years ago, what a great place to enjoy these guys play their music........cheers
I'm a massive Thompson fan, second to none, and I LOVE this version. Dell McCoury is superb, makes it his own. Just shows what a superb piece of music it is.
Thanks, Hillbilly J. I think only old bikers, like me, for the most part, recognize these ancient motorcycle names. Aerials from heaven, now that was clever.
I remember Del and the boys doing Get Down On Your Knees and Pray at the Strawberry Music Festival. 5000 people as quiet as you could imagine. As Shawn Colvin said "You people are so quiet at just the right time"
I saw them do this in Bristol at the Paramount a few years ago. They are the premier traveling bluegrass act today. if you get the chance to see them.....take it.
I think the 70 plus 'thumb down' folks must be Richard Thompson fans. For those that don't know, search for his version on UA-cam. He wrote it and plays amazing solo guitar on the track.
I don't know if I could really call myself a Bluegrass fan, but I sure love these guys! This song started it all for me -- on PBS, shortly after having inherited a Triumph.
Rob McCoury is one of the best banjo pickers today. Del McCoury has a voice that corporate country radio hinds from America listeners. If this would get on country radio would go straight to the top!
BH; Thanks for posting this vid...thanks also to RT for writing a great lovestory- tragety story tune, but the bluegrass version by Del and the Boys is the definitive one for me too...
Along with Rober Earl Keen's "Road Goes On Forever" this is the greatest "criminal-on-the-run-with-his-woman" song in rock & roll history. Thanks Mr. Thompson
i saw Del, Ronnie do this in cambridge ma a few years ago, its an amazing rendition awesome. another amazing version is the way reckless kelly does it! great play back to back....
When you write a great song like this one you don't need a music video because you can see the whole story unfold in front of you. The lyrics of the song tell the story of a young man that had a rough life. He fell in love with a beautifull girl and wanted to get married. But due to circumstances brought on by his lifestyle he didn't live to an old age and died a young man. His other love was his 1952 Vincent motorcycle that he gave to his true love on his death bed. Who needs a video?
being a Richard Thompson fan... I love this version. Del is fantastic. I saw them the last time they were in CHicago because I sound this version while looking for the RT version and thought I'd give them a look and listen. DAMN glad I did - This band is soulful, extremely talented, plays with a ton of emotion, and is tighter live than a lot of newer bands are with studio assistance.
I'm a massive Thompson fan, second to none, and I LOVE this version. Dell McCoury is superb, makes it his own. Just shows what a superb piece of music it is. And what great taste McCoury has. One of the best bluegrass bands out there.
The tune just drops nicely into the bluegrass idiom. I saw Richard Thompson a couple years ago.... at Del McCoury's Delfest bluegrass festival.
So glad I live in a world that has Del McCoury...
You can never get enough McCoury Band!

I Absolutely LOVE this version! Best Ever!!

Be real interesting to hear Richard Thompson’s view on the different versions.

@@sonofadutchman9315 Umm, no. Dels version is the best. The Sean rowe version is even worse than Thompson's original.

Opinions are like a$$holes, . You're a mor0n.
Man, if this Richard Thompson tune does not rock your world- you either deaf or dead!
One of my favorite cross-over songs. It sounds amazing bluegrass style, folk style, country-rock.....this version is just about my favorite.
as a father of a very young one, I can only imagine the joy Del must get from being up there on stage with his sons, doing probably what they love most in the world, and watching them play the way they do

They are so classy! Saw them live at Newport this summer. It was hot and windy and Del and his boys were elegant and tight!!! What a treat!
Del and the boys are the best at reinterpreting music from other genres and making them their own in the Bluegrass style.

I agree that the 60 thumbs down folks got some explainin' to do. This is great even if he might look like a TV evangelist.
I sooo love how you do this tune! :O)
